The worst deals ever

Comments (62)

A while ago I posted a suggestion for the best deals we have ever made. It brought some great responses and memories. With the transfer window open, I've been reflecting on some of the awful business we've done over the years. The following list is far from comprehensive:

Wright, Gardner, Krøldrup, Van der Meyde, Gasgcoine, Ginola, Linderoth, Maurice Johnstone, Babayoko, Angell

Some were well past their best. Some unlucky and some not much good to began with. All, though, pretty much a waste of wages. I'm sure there are many more a bit further back who I can't remember off-hand. Still, I think our overall record on transfers isn't too bad.

For £1m Claus Thomsen was a disaster, even going as far to score an own goal in a derby while under immense pressure from that bull dozer of a player Jamie hair band/clip Rednapp. Disgrace, at least Rhino showed him how to deal with a redshite later in the game by twatting bag-head Fowler.

Midfield maestro Mark Pembridge was a bit dodgy, though he did try. Good price he was sold for also. Didn?t we once have Kenny Sansom? And Mark Hughes was a bit shit too. 1 goal?

David Johnson to Ipswich with Rod Bellfit coming to us in 1971 possibly. Johnsom had scored on each of his his first 3 appearances got himself involved in some local scandal and was shipped off to Suffolk. Cam back to play for England and Liverpool. Bellfit played a few times never scored and dissapeared without a trace.

Regarding Rodrigo. He played the first game of the season against Spurs then Unsy steamrollered him in training the next week and put him out for the season so we sent him back. He was only a loan though wasn’t he so it can’t have been that bad a deal... on the other hand Anthony Gardner last season was just a paper exercise wasn’t it?

Simon Davies cost us at least 4.5m and he was brutal, the only goal he did score was thanks to a goalkeeping howler.

Per Kroldrup @ 5m+ couldnt even head a fuckin ball and was promptly shipped out for 1.5m

Stephen Hughes cost us 3m and even got the number 10 shirt - who’s bright idea was that, terrible player.

Richard Wright poor lad, you wouldn’t trust him to catch a cold or hold your pint.

Bakayoko, apart from a brace against blackburn, was tragic @ 4.5m

These players, for the money they cost were possibly the worst (Beattie is very close - but did have a purple patch that just about keeps him off this list)

You probably got the worst signing in Everton history.

Didn't he play only one game (a derby I think) for about 20 minutes and got himself sent off.

Definitely the worst in 50 years of watching Everton.

Idan Tal.

I disagree with the original post stating Gascoigne though. He had a few awesome games at goodison.. I think one of them being against Charlton, he linked up with Campbell and Jeffers very nicely for a period.

Conor Waters is bang on with his two, Per Krøldrup and Simon Davies.

My God, I?ve forgotten so many... The list is actually terrifying. How could I have forgotten Nyarko, a man whose commitment to Everton makes AvDM look like Brian Labone.

Steven, on reflection I take back what I said about Gascoigne. I remember Geoff Nulty well, Martin. He was quite an all rounder but not much good in any position though. He was a trier which counts for a lot. If I recall correctly his career was ended by a dreadful challenge. Can anyone remind me who committed it?

Being Danish myself, I have to come to the defense of Per Krøldrup. The whole deal stank to high heaven. After signing for Everton, he was told that if Everton didn?t advance to to the group stages of CL, they would offload him again. A cowardly hidden agenda and totally demoralising to the player. Those awful performances he put in all came after he knew he was not wanted. Fiorentina, who knew about his class of course, came in for him, and at the end of the season the Italian associated press put him in the Team of the Year. Bad player.... right! Moyes made him look bad and Billy Liar fucked him over.

The dutchman Ray Atteveld hardly set the world on fire but his compatriot Andy van der Meyde must be the biggest waste on money. Bought for about £3 million when injured and has hung around for years (STILL here!) picking up mega bucks but has given us sweet FA, apart from rocking the boat and frequent from dereliction of duties... waste of fucking space!

PS. I believe now is one of the rare occasions when he is fit to play, so how good it would be for him to play against the RS, and do the business to repay some of what he owes... I won?t hold my breath!

Ian Wilson, bought from Leicester City by Colin Harvey in Sep 1987. Not the calibre of signing to consolidate our standing as the reigning league champions that we were all hoping for. Made worse by the fact that the Shite had signed Barnes, Beardsley, Aldridge & Houghton around the same time. With hindsight probably a glimpse of the mediocrity that was to follow.....

Also, what about Ian Atkins? Bought as a squad player in late 1984. This guy got his grid on all the 1985 team photos with all the silverware that was on show that year.

I reckon that makes him Everton 85?s answer to Ringo Starr, Eric Morcambe & Art Garfunkel!! I saw him play for Brum versus Tranmere circa 1990, even at 3rd Tier level he was awful.

In terms of sheer absence of any discernible skill: Claus Thomsen

Some of the players mentioned in this thread were good players who we didn’t het the best out of, e.g. Kroldrup. And Linderoth was a perfect midfield holding player before the role became fashionable who presumably despaired of playing in a midfield full of cloggers.

Asa Hartford joined us at the back end of his career really. Great passer though (and he scored in a derby). Gary Stanley never really hit the heights, I agree. Remember him getting sent off for fighting with McDermott. Rioch & Todd were good signings though. Todd was played at right-back though & he was one of the best centre-halves in the country.
