The worst deals ever
Comments (62)
A while ago I posted a suggestion for the best deals we have ever made. It brought some great responses and memories. With the transfer window open, I've been reflecting on some of the awful business we've done over the years. The following list is far from comprehensive:
Wright,
Gardner,
Krøldrup,
Van der Meyde,
Gasgcoine,
Ginola,
Linderoth,
Maurice Johnstone,
Babayoko,
Angell
Some were well past their best. Some unlucky and some not much good to began with. All, though, pretty much a waste of wages. I'm sure there are many more a bit further back who I can't remember off-hand. Still, I think our overall record on transfers isn't too bad.

Mitch Ward and Carl Tiler didn’t exactly set pulses racing. And bringing Stuart Barlow in - yes, he had pace but nothing else!
For £1m Claus Thomsen was a disaster, even going as far to score an own goal in a derby while under immense pressure from that bull dozer of a player Jamie hair band/clip Rednapp. Disgrace, at least Rhino showed him how to deal with a redshite later in the game by twatting bag-head Fowler.
Midfield maestro Mark Pembridge was a bit dodgy, though he did try. Good price he was sold for also. Didn?t we once have Kenny Sansom? And Mark Hughes was a bit shit too. 1 goal?
David Johnson to Ipswich with Rod Bellfit coming to us in 1971 possibly. Johnsom had scored on each of his his first 3 appearances got himself involved in some local scandal and was shipped off to Suffolk. Cam back to play for England and Liverpool. Bellfit played a few times never scored and dissapeared without a trace.
Danny Williamson from West Ham. Awful
Claus Thomsen is a good shout as he was crap! Slaven Billic, Stephen Hughes, Danny Williamson, Preki, Alexandersson, Amo, Vinney Sideways, Terry Phelan, Mikel Madar and many more were painful to watch ? we have got a large hall of shame!
It has to be Espen Baardsen surely?
In a price/value thing Danny Williamson has to be amongst the worst.
John Spencer though for me is the worst. At the time we had no money and he was useless beyond belief.
John O?Kane from Manchester Utd, also Jesper Blomquist.
Can not believe I missed Earl Barrett, now he was painful to watch.
Paul Gerrard, culiminating in a horrendous derby howler that left us all distraught and sent them on the way to 3 cups, what a tit
Preki, Warzycha (if thats how it’s spelt), the re-signing of Beagrie, Beatie and Van der Meyde
Mikel Madar wasn?t great and Tobias Linderoth was a quality player just never showed it with us. Alex Nyarko was dog shite and does anyone remember that brazilian lad Rodrigo? What became of him?
I know he was only on loan, but if we are talking about deals then Glenn Keeley on loan from Blackburn Rovers - Nov 82. I’m sure I don’t need to explain.........
Who can ever forget David Irving, from Darlington I think, or Bernie Wright, from Walsall. Bret Angell?
Regarding Rodrigo. He played the first game of the season against Spurs then Unsy steamrollered him in training the next week and put him out for the season so we sent him back. He was only a loan though wasn’t he so it can’t have been that bad a deal... on the other hand Anthony Gardner last season was just a paper exercise wasn’t it?
How have you all failed to remember the titanic disaster that was Alex "thump the pitch and cry" Nyarko?!!! Woeful
Dan Patterson beat me to it. Definitely Nyarko by a million miles ? how much did that guy cost? However, bearing in mind that all clubs drop a bollock with transfers now and again, surely we are in a totally different league to the RS in this one?
David Burrows (the devil’s son) and Kendall swapped him for Cottee !!
Li Wi Feng ha ha ha!
He came with Li Tie.
Andy Herbert - Warzycha was awesome!
I think Saha will join this list in the coming years...
Simon Davies cost us at least 4.5m and he was brutal, the only goal he did score was thanks to a goalkeeping howler.
Per Kroldrup @ 5m+ couldnt even head a fuckin ball and was promptly shipped out for 1.5m
Stephen Hughes cost us 3m and even got the number 10 shirt - who’s bright idea was that, terrible player.
Richard Wright poor lad, you wouldn’t trust him to catch a cold or hold your pint.
Bakayoko, apart from a brace against blackburn, was tragic @ 4.5m
These players, for the money they cost were possibly the worst (Beattie is very close - but did have a purple patch that just about keeps him off this list)
Paul Holmes was fucking garbage.
If I remember correctly not only did we pay money for Williamson but gave them Unsworth in return who was an England player at the time. All this for a West Ham reserve
Geoff Nulty!!! I?m sorry but I dare anyone to top that!!
Stephen Jones
You probably got the worst signing in Everton history.
Didn't he play only one game (a derby I think) for about 20 minutes and got himself sent off.
Definitely the worst in 50 years of watching Everton.
Idan Tal.
I disagree with the original post stating Gascoigne though. He had a few awesome games at goodison.. I think one of them being against Charlton, he linked up with Campbell and Jeffers very nicely for a period.
Conor Waters is bang on with his two, Per Krøldrup and Simon Davies.
My God, I?ve forgotten so many... The list is actually terrifying. How could I have forgotten Nyarko, a man whose commitment to Everton makes AvDM look like Brian Labone.
Steven, on reflection I take back what I said about Gascoigne. I remember Geoff Nulty well, Martin. He was quite an all rounder but not much good in any position though. He was a trier which counts for a lot. If I recall correctly his career was ended by a dreadful challenge. Can anyone remind me who committed it?
Being Danish myself, I have to come to the defense of Per Krøldrup. The whole deal stank to high heaven. After signing for Everton, he was told that if Everton didn?t advance to to the group stages of CL, they would offload him again. A cowardly hidden agenda and totally demoralising to the player. Those awful performances he put in all came after he knew he was not wanted. Fiorentina, who knew about his class of course, came in for him, and at the end of the season the Italian associated press put him in the Team of the Year. Bad player.... right! Moyes made him look bad and Billy Liar fucked him over.
Btw. Kroldrup wasn’t sold for £1.5 mil. Everton broke even on the deal.
Andy Crooks - it was Jimmy Case.
What about Ernie Hunt and Joe Harper £180k from Aberdeen or Paul Walsh from Blackpool. Then There was Peter Eustace and Stan Laurel's mate Oliver. Alan Biley... remember him? Here is a team: Lawson McDonald Nulty Newton (Henry) Tiger McLoughlin Rehn Preki Wilson Keely Angel Wright
Stephen Hughes from Arsenal for £3 Million!!!
Whatever became of him?
Has to be James Beattie for me. I think we broke our transfer record at the time for the lazy, slow Championship-quality get!
Simon Davies was gash too; Welsh international, my arse! (As Jim Royle would no doubt say!)
Dunno how much we paid for him, but John Oster was crap. Espen Baardsen cost us 3 points in his one appearance, an absolute shambles. The second coming of Jeffers wasn?t much chop either.
Mike Miligan, Nyarko, Simonsen, Li Tie, and return of Peter Beagrie.
Bernie Wright ? not just the worst player I have ever seen play for Everton, but the worst player I have ever seen in the top division.
What a distressing post :( It hurts reading all those names.
Surely has to be Brett Angell!!!!
I don?t see how cheapo short-term players like Carl Tiler and Mitch Ward, even Brett Angell, can be considered disastrous. They were brought in to make up the numbers (honestly, did anyone REALLY expect Angell to light up the Premiership?)
Andy Van Der Meyde on the other hand... It makes me feel like crying when I think of all the money we?re paying him to sit on his fat arse every Saturday afternoon.
Speaking of Simonsen... My sister?s mate was shagging him a few years back. Said he was a top bloke. So there!
Glen Keely? Sent off in his only game and cost us a hammering in a derby.
Purely because he was ex-scum... Sander Westerveld should be fairly high up the list as well. I think he only stood in for one or two games.
I couldn?t believe when I saw that we?d took him on a short-term contract.
The dutchman Ray Atteveld hardly set the world on fire but his compatriot Andy van der Meyde must be the biggest waste on money. Bought for about £3 million when injured and has hung around for years (STILL here!) picking up mega bucks but has given us sweet FA, apart from rocking the boat and frequent from dereliction of duties... waste of fucking space!
PS. I believe now is one of the rare occasions when he is fit to play, so how good it would be for him to play against the RS, and do the business to repay some of what he owes... I won?t hold my breath!
Ian Wilson, bought from Leicester City by Colin Harvey in Sep 1987. Not the calibre of signing to consolidate our standing as the reigning league champions that we were all hoping for. Made worse by the fact that the Shite had signed Barnes, Beardsley, Aldridge & Houghton around the same time. With hindsight probably a glimpse of the mediocrity that was to follow.....
Also, what about Ian Atkins? Bought as a squad player in late 1984. This guy got his grid on all the 1985 team photos with all the silverware that was on show that year.
I reckon that makes him Everton 85?s answer to Ringo Starr, Eric Morcambe & Art Garfunkel!! I saw him play for Brum versus Tranmere circa 1990, even at 3rd Tier level he was awful.
Slaven Bilic must surely be added to this list ? what a serious drain that was (wasn?t it another one of those ridiculous 5 year deals?).
Damn!! Got my punchline wrong. I meant Ernie Wise of course. Sorry Eric!!
I sat in the Park End with thousands of red shite cos it was the only ticket I could get. We got slaughtered 5-0 and I could not get out with the shite singing "1 2, 1 2 3, 1 2 3 4, 5-nil".
Glen Keeley was the worst bit of business ever. Luckily Howard Kendall made it up to me with a few trophies...
Martin Murray (the new George Best).
Anderson de Silva. Protracted visa cock-up, 18 months at the club with no football... then off to Barnsley ? nuff said!
And I?d put Richard Wright as the worst keeper we have had since.... hell the worst ever. The man was a joke.
Suprised Mikel Madar is mentioned - a free transfer and his 6 goals in 1997-98 saved us from relegation.
What about Paul Holmes! and Ian durrant (on loan)!!!
Slaven Bilic, by a country mile. Remember his "we are with the jetset now" after cheating his way to the semis of the World Cup, having miraculously recovered from a season-long injury with the blues.
Twat.
Stephen Hughes is currently Walsall captain - but out injured at the moment.
Tony Thomas........Oh my god
Richard Wright was poor ? that is very true... but was he worse than Dai "the drop" Davies???? I think not!!!
And no one has mentioned Paul Wilkinson yet....... he stank with a barnet worse than Fellaini!!
In terms of cash down the drain: Nyarko or Bilic
In terms of sheer absence of any discernible skill: Claus Thomsen
Some of the players mentioned in this thread were good players who we didn’t het the best out of, e.g. Kroldrup. And Linderoth was a perfect midfield holding player before the role became fashionable who presumably despaired of playing in a midfield full of cloggers.
Sean - he scored the winner in the derby so we can forgive him.
Rod Belfitt, Bernie Wright, Alexanderson & Nyarko have to be our worst
Gary Stanley anybody? David Smallman? "Tiger" John McLaughlan, and Asa Hartford, Bruce Rioch and Colin Todd ? not bad players but never really shone at Everton. There?s also that useless big-headed git, Jesper Blomquist.
Asa Hartford joined us at the back end of his career really. Great passer though (and he scored in a derby). Gary Stanley never really hit the heights, I agree. Remember him getting sent off for fighting with McDermott. Rioch & Todd were good signings though. Todd was played at right-back though & he was one of the best centre-halves in the country.
