It looks like 6th. place is ours

Now The Derby Dust has settled, we seem to have found ourselves in a very convenient Island of nailed on 6th place. Drifting 5 points above and below all the rest. Our Goal Indifference is below all those above and above all those below... and that's including all the games in hand... how strange....!!!!!!

The Table never lies... but here's a note of warning regarding " nailed on 6th place": there are 16 games still to go: that's 48 points... somewhat more than the entire total we have actually accumulated at this time...

It's a funny old game...

I for one is prety amazed we are still within touching distance of Europe with no recognised striker (not including the young Big V) for well other a month!! This has been mentioned breify on some football discussio shows - but come on - if it was Utd, Shite or Arses winning games with no fit strikers it would be sensational!!

But is there any way that 6th could earn us a European spot?

If Man Utd win the carling cup then 6th place will be a European spot.

Gavin, doesn't the Uefa Cup spot go to the Carling Cup runners up in that case?

6th spot gets a Uefa Cup placing if the FA Cup Final is a fixture containing 2 sides qualifying for the Champions League via places 1-4 in the league.

If Man U win the Carling Cup and finish in the top 4, UEFA Cup spot goes down to the league (6th place). Its different in the FA Cup as it is a bigger tournament

Carling Cup runners-up don’t get a European place if the winners are in the CL but FA cup runners up do- this is why Wigan didn’t get into Europe a few years back but Millwall did. Having said all that it’s academic as Spurs will win the league cup due to their own deal with the devil, forgoing league progress in order to have a 6 or 7 game season to guarantee European football. Again. IF the Carling Cup winners, FA Cup Winners and FA Cup runners-up are all qualified for CL then 5th, 6th and 7th are in UEFA Cup spots, like 2007. So the real question is- who will be the Cup runners-up that will benefit from our Champions’ League qualification? :) COYB!

After Man U we have 7 winable games in the league before we meet Villa. Anything we get from this current tough run is a bonus (though I think we might do the Arse and get a point at United) and then we get a few players back to have a real go during these games. Bolton, Newcastle, West Brom, Blackburn, Stoke, Portsmouth, and Wigan. You?d have to be disappointed if we didn?t get 18 points from this run. I can see a few suspensions spoiling us a bit but otherwise we are in good shape to make the end of the season pretty exciting.

So my Fantasy Football would give us 54-58 points with 6 games to go..... We could match/better last seasons points tally....... Isn?t deluded brilliant? And if me Aunt had bolloxs she?d be me Uncle!

Our team has performed miracles so far !! BUT..a note of caution. I think that if we dont take advantage of the January window to strengthen the squad we may yet again falter due to fatigue, burn out, injuries and suspensions..We need more quality squad members to maintain the challenge. Most of the other sides are active this month and we are only rumoured to be active in trying for players who are faceless unknowns..I still cant for the life of me understand how almost every other team have some money to spend and we apparantly have none ????

I slightly agree with you Nick...

6th is looking like our only realistic finish and Europe !!!

No 4th this Season, but Silverware in the Cabinet would make up for it:meaning we would have beaten RS on the way to Wembley.

Villa’s luck has to run out soon, they have been on a run since they beat us late at Goodison and in many games they have not played well. I truly believe we are a better side than them and can catch them. Also with Fabregas out Arsenal are catchable, starting with a win against them at Goodison. I haven’t given up on fourth, but will be cheering United on in the Carling Cup just to give us a fall-back option should it be required.
