Fiorentina anyone?

Comments (124)

Tonight's game is probably the biggest and most important game of our season so far as we realistically cannot win any other silverware. I personally think that we have to go for this game and try to win at all costs within normal time. 6th place in the league is not necessarily going to lead to Uefa Cup football unless there are 'favours' from the teams above us (notably Man Utd in the League Cup).

The point of the post is to compare this game to the Fiorentina Uefa Cup clash and see if anyone is as scared as I am of a repeat of losing on penalties and the psychological effect it could have on our season to the players and management?

I personally see penalties as a realistic outcome for tonight's game given the fact that we have been equally matched with the shite in the last 2 games.

The similarity between this game and the Fiorentina game (ie. nothing else to play for if we are beaten) is evident for all to see. After we lost that game we went on a shocking run of results and performances which would not have been out of place amongst the relegation candidates. Please make sure that this does not happen again lads, stuff those cheating Spanish loving tossers and all will be forgiven...

Definitely some pre-match nerves there, Andrew!

Let's make this the Match Thread for your ongoing comments... David Moyes has named an unchanged side... but no place in the 18 for badboy Victor Anichebe.

OK, guys, this is probably the biggest game we've had since Europe in the 80s.

What do you think the line up should be and why? Should Leon play tonight or is it Gosling? Should Fellaini play his usual game clumsy but effective, or staying out of the ref's book and a complete dud?

For me, he goes all out, risks the book and slaughters the red shite.

Anichebe, big one this. Is this a psychological warfare to do with Moyes and Rafa (if it is, can't you just hear that phone call between Davey and Sir Alex?) I think our Mr. Moyes is growing up at a fast rate of knots.

Liverpool, you will perish tonight. Why? Because we the fans and everybody else in the country are willing you to lose.

It's that simple. 2-1 we win.

Does anyone else get the feeling that these twats are gonna do us on penalties tonight, 'coz they've not done that to us yet?

Anyway, UP THE TOFFEEMEN.......

I’m not so sure it is the ’Biggest game since Europe in the 1980s’ It’s just another cup tie in a devalued competition.

Looking at it from a purely financial perspective, we’d gain more money through rising two league places then we would through going all the way to Wembley and winning the trophy.

However, from a sentimental perspective...

I HOPE WE BATTER THEM

COME ON YOU BLUES!!!

Yea, surely the game against Fiorentina last year was bigger, Steaua Bucharest, Villareal, FA Cup Final 1995?

If this wasn’t Liverpool it’d be just another cup tie.

I ’m guessing we’ll see Gosling in the second half. I just hope it’s for Osman instead of Pienaar. Osman looks exhausted. But if Pienaar’s hurt, he’ll have to go 90 regardless.

Disgraceful performance overall. When you consider Gerrards absence and Torres looking rusty so far, there will never be a better chance to beat them. What is so frustrating is that with 2 top players to replace Osman and Fellaini, games like this and Arsenal would be won.

Fellaini?s distribution is woeful, Osman again too lightweight, and the only thing Pienaar has successfully kicked got him a yellow card. Unless the Blue Kangaroo or Joeleon pops up on a set piece I can?t see us creating a chance never mind a goal. Step it up Blues, we won?t do them bastards on penalties.

Thanks,Michael. Just checked on TV and found some obscure channel is actually showing the game. The game has been pure shite in my opinion. Where is our midfield tonight ? Arteta has hardly got near the ball. Osman is pathetic and Fellaini is just dreamily jogging around and kicking people. Defensively also have been caught out a few times but thankfully we havent been made to pay. We have been handed a lifeline with Gerraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaard getting injured and Torres looking like he’d rather be shopping..lets make it count in the 2nd half..Gosling on for Ossie and lets try and finish the game with 11 men, pleez. The commentators are stupid as always. Cant believe that Torres got away with that late challenge yet our guys dont.

Greetings to Evertonians everywhere!

Just got here, don’t know much match details, just that it is 0-0 at half time ,and apparently it has been a lousy game thus far.

With the red shite up in European action soon, I’m sitting here wearing a Real Madrid shirt, with an Everton one underneath it! Well it is the weather for extra clothes.

A victory tonight would be marvellous, no matter how it arrives. Ok, team not playing well by all accounts, but if we can knock out tonight’s opposition then you will hear no complaints from me.

Sitting here a nervous Evertonian, the rest of the season hangs in the balance, I still remember 1991 like yesterday, so who will be the hero tonight.

A pity about the Anichebe incident, I don’t what was said today, we could of done with him in the side today.

I have no match to watch, only comments from here and the official Everton website Blueroom thread.

It seems maybe a set piece may be our only way of registering a goal tonight, Van Der Meyde has yet to be introduced, the team is not playing well, it has been a poor game, and my nerves are becoming more frayed by the passing minute.

I would so much love to beat them tonight, not just for obvious reasons, or the heartbreak of 1986 and 1989, but there is little better feeling as an Evertonian than beating that shower of shit. The F.A CUP makes it all the more important. Someone in blue can be a hero tonight.

It was on the cards at full time that they were there for the taking. What impressed me most was the confidence in such a young soul willing to take the ball off a centre half facing his own goal during such a big game without a care in the world. That was more impressive for me than the goal. This kid needs to be signed up for 10+ years. But hey, "Gosling the legend is born..."

Moyes gets lambasted on here often for his substitutions, but they were absolutely inspired tonight. That?s assuming Fellaini wasn?t injured, which I don?t think he was. Fantastic, great match. Great night.

Did anyone see what happened with the Liverpool players after Gosling scored?

Superb performance from the lads. We were really composed for most of the game. I liked the way we patiently played the ball around and tried to wear and break them down. Arteta in particular was excellent pulling the strings. We could have had the goal earlier through Osman and Cahill ? so it was well deserved.

What a fairytale end for Gosling to score from AvdM cross. As said recently, many of us have been critical of DM's subs but I cannot fault him tonight. Bringing on two 18-year-olds and then AvdM for Neville (who played really well I thought) showed the ambition that we all wanted. Glad it paid off.

Just hope we have enough fit bodies and don?t suffer a hangover against Bolton.

Get in there, Everton!!

Well done to Moyes for going for it with using AvdM. More of that in games please.

The socks are reference to a slang term for people from Kirkby....

After all the slagging he?s taken recently, I thought Osman played well tonight, especially when moved to a more central role. Baines looked to be exposed as one-footed when going forward but all the back four were heroes. Phil Neville was excellent and, apart from the save Howard made from Riera, they never had a sniff.

AvdM with a match-winning cross against the shite! All is forgiven!

And Dan Gosling, words fail me...

Happy happy happy

Watching this in my local Norwegian pub with the majority of the Liverpool fanbase present, PRICELESS!

Andy van der Meyde? Worth every penny.

OK, not quite, but what a night. All about the lads who all did us proud. Rodwell and that Gosling kid looked like they were born to play against the shite.

Perhaps a glass of brandy before the cocoa tonight then.

If anyone fancies earning a tenner plus postage, if you have all 3 games v Liverpool, that's the two at Anfield and tonight's game on tape and want to do me a copy straight to disc then step forward. My email address is bradley_chris@hotmail.com and I live in Birmingham so contact me and we can try and sort something out. Thanks.

Great win tonight, bet Jo was well impressed with his new team mates and the support.

Ghosts were laid to rest tonight and I can't put into words how good I feel. Arteta performed in a big game, Moyes was positive and brave, the youngsters showed they are up to the task and in a game that was beginning to have that familiar Fiorentina feel ? that for all the play and endeavour we would never have our BIG moment ? it decisively swung our way. Jagielka keeps getting better, incredible.

Absolutely elated, this is what being an Evertonian is all about. I don't know if anyone saw, but on sky sports the headline was, ?Toffees scrape late win?. The bastards, when are they gonna give us credit? We battered them!!

Gutted to have missed the crucial moment thanks to ITV cutting to adverts at the most inopportune moment but saying that Wickes bathrooms will now always have a special place in my heart.

However, I do think Moyes could?ve tried harder to get ?there was only one team trying to win? into his post match interview!!

Tell you what lads, this could be a turning point for us.

We showed great mental strength, Moyes was POSITIVE and you know what, as a team we BELIEVED we could win....that’s been a long time coming against the Sky 4.

If Blue Bill could somehow find £20M to support Moyes, who knows what could happen?

C’MON, I’n fcuking elated!!!

Words fail me! We?ve finally slain the shite dragon! I feel like we won the fucking World Cup today. Us, plucky little Everton playing with 2 teenagers and nothing but blood, sweat and tears against a collection of millionaires! You red cunts are finally defeated. I have been advocating Gosling?s inclusion for weeks on TW, but Shandy Andy, what a surprise. Moysey, you really surprised me today with your subs. You may have even appeased Tony Marsh for once. :D

What a day, what a manager, what a squad, what a fucking goal. Get in Gosling! COYB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just watched the highlights on SHITE TV (useless pricks switching to the adds whilst the goal was scored!) and Moyes gets another dig in there "at Everton we like to do things with class & dignity even when we win" Priceless!

Just goes to show after the FSW jibes that Moyes has risen above it and shoved his comments back down his throat! Benitez was practically in tears after the game! LOL! The shower were fucking useless when Stevie GBH LAAAA went off so in a nutshell next game v?s the darkside start the following chant: You're just a one man team, oneeee man team Stevie Laaaaaaaa! COYB!

Well done you Blues! You didn?t let us down tonight. I must admit when Ossie hit the post I thought oh no here we go again. As I remarked last week after the Arsenal game there is a maturity emerging within this squad. Tonight they showed once again that with patience and determination not to mention the enthusiasm of the young boys, there is a chance that a very good side may yet go on to bigger and better things.

Let?s hope Jo finds his feet from the beginning, he cannot have failed to have been impressed by the team and the fans after tonight. However, Saturday?s game will be no walk in the park, but I think tonight?s result and performance will have the desired effect on the remainder of the season. COYB more big days and nights like this please!

Yep, Rafa?s whining:

"The turning point of the game was the second yellow card for Lucas, I was not happy, but I do not want to say anything about the referee."

Nor does he want to say anything about having a brain-dead Brazilian sent off for taking down a center back at midfield.

I?m so proud of those kids... and kudos to whatever rehab program VDM came out of. Give the guy credit. After years adrift, he came on with a Hibbert haircut, a flat belly and full preparation for that one moment. Well done, Andy man.

The socks were getting thrown onto the pitch because there is a name for people from Kirkby which is ’Kirkby sock robbers’.

That is why Kopites were throwin socks onto the pitch. Regardless of their own supporters in the stands from Kirkby.

Don’t they make you cringe.
