Andy in, Ossie out
Comments (106)
I am Hearing reports on the internet that Leon Osman is out for six weeks with an unidentified injury. If this is true, than Andy van de Meyde will almost certainly start as well as Louis Saha. I am worried about their ability to complete the 90 minutes, especially Saha and we may even see Baines move to Left Midfield and a return For Yobo. Maybe even Mikky will move back to wide midfield and Rodwell play holding Midfield?
Regardless, we have a huge game and as long as we are behind the team, I don't see them letting us down.

Anichebe, Gosling and Rodwell start!
Matchday comments in this thread...
I took some stick about my Anichebe comments recently & I see he is back in today. As an Evertonian first & last since 1947, I wish him all the best and this is his chance to redeem & make a name for himself. He needs to show real effort. He has said sorry, so now prove it was real & not a bankers sorry... Score a couple Vic prove me wrong & shut me up .....
does anyone have a link for todays game?
Link for today’s game: http://www.iraqgoals.com/en/ch3.html

Thanks people.
Let’s have em!
Can you believe it?
What a start!!! :-)
Get in there Jack Rodwell!
Corner headed by Cahill point blank at keeper, saved but parried to keeper?s right where Rodwell was first to react 2 feet out and blasted high and at an angle into the goal.
Well taken from a tight angle. COYB!
Correction: Keeper did not save, hit someone?s leg instead.
Hand ball, they should be down to 10 men!
Lucky Bastards"!
What was Hibbert thinking?
Threw away a goal with a clumsy tackle.
I am on iraqgoals link but I can only see a small screen...is this the same for everyone or can you get a large screen view???
Bloody Hibbert!!
Great link
http://atdhe.net/live-tv-3526.html
I can only get a small screen too. Better than no screen though...
I am trying to use Veetle for the match but no luck. Does not play for some reason... anyone got an idea of what's wrong?
Michael, cheers for that! great link and full screen!! COYB!!
Bastards are trying to take Arteta’s legs off!
Very nice, thanks Michael
Cahill extremely unlucky to get a yellow there. He clearly had his shirt pulled which made him connect with his hand rather than his head. Bad decision by the ref.
Arteta.....what a legend!!!!!!!! GET IN!!!!!
Get in there! Low penalty by Arteta sent keeper the wrong way.
Anichebe doing his best Abonglahor impression, driving through the defence with a direct (and pacy) dribble before being brought down by Sidwell for the penalty decision.
2-1, Game on!
What a game, huh?
We’re playing some good stuff too
GET iN!!!!!!!!!!!! Totally deserved! Micky is bossing this game!
Mention to Vic though - WHAT A RUN! In that five second burst there, the lad looked pure class!!! I thought we’d signed Robinho!
Great run from Victor for the penalty!
Vic looks like he has a point to prove today!! COYB!!
Finally Vic seems to have realised he?s built like the hulk and starting to use his strength.
I have no problem if Vic wants to prove a point. lol
I think Anichebe looks sharp, his hold-up play with Cahill is great and he is winning headers as well as tracking back and working hard. Seems to be trying his best to prove his worth.
Hibbert is going to cost us this match if he keeps giving Ashley Young miles of space!
Big let off there!
Abonglahor should have buried that cross from Young. We should have marked him better. Glad he missed.
Anichebe looks like a guy who may have responded to the proverbial rocket up his arse. Looking lively ? yes lively..... and a few nice touches too. Seems to be troubling the Villa defence a bit. And it was a great run with purpose and pace for the penalty. Good lad I say.
If only Vic had his shooting boots on.... But he?s looking good today.
The Villa fans are singing about Istanbul.
What?s that all about? Knobheads. Why don't they get their own taunts?
I agree with everyone saying that Anichebe looks out to prove a point. He is positively driving forwards every time he gets the ball, but I think both Gosling and Rodwell are both quietly going about their business too and showing some decent touches.
The ref is determined to keep it close for Villa... what on earth was he looking at on that Gosling groping session?
I?m happy that half-time came when it did.
Villa were starting to gain ground down their right wing and I hope the break now disrupts their momentum.
Yeah, the ref's having a wierd game. Vic looks good, always looking to shoot, as does Gosling. COYB!
On this evidence again... we’re better than them. Anichebe looks like he realises that leaving Everton is a step down.
Haven’t seen him play this well all season.
Vic looks like he has a point to prove today!! COYB!!
Rodwell reads the game like a 27-year-old, not 17-year-old, serious prospect.
Not that I mind, cos we got a goal, but I wonder if that Villa handball will be punished after the game. Should have been a straight red.
Petrov is a lucky bastard. That handball should have been a straight red, regardless of the goal. Well done everybody so far. COYB!
Bar Roo, Rodwell is the best youngster I?ve seen at Everton (I?m 22). So, so classy.
Does anyone know the ruling on the Petrov handball? I feel pretty hard done by. I?m going to be gutted if we don?t win this one.
The Blues are battling well. Villa are no pushovers. This will go right to the end. They are attacking our defensive weak link in Hibbert who despite his speed is switching off and not marking the wingman closely. We have to bolster the midfield and maybe replace a jet-lagged Timmie. The referee is quite poor despite the penalties. He?s missed at least one other blatant penalty and an obstruction in the box.
In the words of the Everton administration, Anichebe is looking like a new signing!
A job well done first half. I?d say we?re on top overall but they?re always going to be dangerous on the break with Young and Agobonlahor. A two-goal cushion would be nice!
Yes, Vic?s done well (see above) but Arteta is instrumental again. Also I think both of the young boys are putting in a good shift.
I think our first goal said a lot about our team. Rather than whinging about the hand ball on the line (which I believe many teams would have stopped and done) we played to the whistle and got our reward. Maybe we shot ourselves in the foot by not getting the penalty which would have also got a straight red card for Petrov ? But I?m proud of the way we reacted. You can see in the replay, Rodwell, Jags and Cahill never take their eye off the ball after the hand ball.
If the ref had seen it ? should it not have been a red card anyway, irrespective of the fact the ref let us play on?!
Good on Anichebe for staying up after being fouled. Wish he would work on his first touch though.
http://atdhe.net/live-tv-3526.html
This link keeps on going down. Anyone got another link with full screen if poss??
Good save! FFS get it out though!
Neville needs to start sitting deeper instead of floating out to the right wing. Start breaking up all plays through the middle. Too many close calls in the last 5-10 mins.
Why are we throwing the 2nd half ?
Straight swap, Van der Meyde for Gosling???!!
Timmy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GTF IN THERE
Get in Tiny you fucking beauty!!!!!!
YES!!!!!
And good show for pointing to his armband!
GET IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cahill you legend!
YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!! Cahill!!!!!!!!!!!
YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!! Cahill!!!!!!!!!!!
Great tackle by Rodwell. Who the fuck is Wayne Rooney?
Arteta running the show, with Rodwell a perfect foil alongside him... lovely to watch.
What a great tackle by Rodwell! We could have a good ’un here boys!
Anichebe has been phenomenal today.
They have completely given up... No way Villa are 3 places and 11 points better than us.
Nick, that will soon change. This their ?Fiorentina?, mark my words. Plus have you sen their run-in? They play 3 of the top five before we meet them at Villa Park, whereas we have no-marks for the next few games. This game will trigger a slump for them.
Great rugby tackle by Rodwell this time! I think it was a good choice ? Young was starting to open his legs up!
Applause to Big Vic as he goes off. He?s been slated on here a lot (often deserved perhaps) but today he was "unstoppable" and gave the Villa defence a "torrid afternoon" ? and those are the words of Setanta commentators!!!
I take it Yobo will go in DM with Cahill pushing further up? Or are we going 5-4-1? Anyway fantastic game, deserved win.
I’ve just realised the first sentence looked a bit daft.
Anyway I’ve gotta say we’ve surely got the best youth products in the league right now?
I know what you mean Neil. If their morale goes easily like that then they could be in a bit of trouble when they start losing more...
Liked how Vic and Mikel taken off early to let Goodison show their appreciation. Hopefully that’ll mean Vic is fully rehabillitated to the team.
Good result that and a great performance. Let’s keep it up!
Great win. Arteta, Rodwell and Cahill were magnificent today.
Is anyone else getting the feeling we are going to go all the way? We could do with a nice easy home tie next though. Chelsea will do.
What a cracking result! Apart from a ten minute spell when we looked a touch nervous and they could have bagged a couple (what a phenominal save by Howard from Carew) ? I?d say we pretty much bossed that game (Arteta in particular was a class above anything they offered in midfield).
All round great team effort. Honourable mentions go to Rodwell for a well taken goal and such a composed all round display ? Gosling for a nice contribution going forward ? and Big Vic.....
Mr Anichebe getting deserved applause today. He finally played like we?ve been crying out for him to. He looked strong (seems to have got his centre of gravity sorted, staying on his feet much more), and generally looked quite sharp. His run into the box for the pen was really eye-catching plus he crossed for Timmy?s goal. He was "unstoppable" and gave the Villa defence a "torrid afternoon". And those are the words of a Setanta commentator!
Vic was very good today, and as for Rodwell he looks the part, very impressed with the boys today, we were well worth the win :)
Villa were shite today and sucked us into playing their hoofball for major periods of the second half. Only downside is Timmy misses next match due to that booking. Time for Jo to come in and shine!
COYB
Someone asked higher up why Villa were singing about Istanbul; I think it?s because that?s where the Uefa Cup Final is this year, and they think they?re going to get there.
I smell silverware!
A few plaudits:
Mikel Arteta, you are my maestro! Such class, such grace, such a great mentality!
Big Vic: FINALLY! Did not lie down, fought like an animal out there today making me any many other blues proud! Great run for the penalty + an assist for Cahill. Show that fighting spirit again and Goodison will love you!
Cahill: When will that man stop scoring and pestering defences? I bow to you Mr Cahill
Rodwell: 17 years old? You must be kidding. A true giant today
Honorable mentions goes out to: Hibbo who did so well after the unessecary penalty,
Neville: Still does the biz, anyhing but fancy but looks great right now.
Jags / Lescott: Have looked more composed than today, but another great game.
Howard: Should have saved the penalty, but a magnificent save from Carew on 2-1
Gosling: A bit on/off, but he dares!
Baines: Quiet but solid today I think.
Damn, a mention for the whole lot :-)
I guess i?m happy with this performance
Tense start to the 2nd half where Villa dominated and had some good chances but fair play to the boys, they kept on battling and got there just deserts. Please don't let it be Man Utd in the next round. If anyone recorded today's game and wants to do me a copy, I'll send you a fiver, let me know. And the three Merseyside derbies we've just played.
Know what you mean Nick and Neil, just remember though there are no easy games in this league. Well done today though boys.
COYB
Overall, a great performance. Both teams on equal footing with the missing men etc but, despite a couple of glaring misses by them, they were clearly second best and a great revenge result by the Blues. Anichebe a big inprovement but still needs to control the ball better with his back to goal. Agbonlahor is not England class but Rodders and DG are great prospects. Hibbert and Cahill miss the next game at Newcastle but we should have Saha and Jo to come in and maybe we will get to see Jacobsen?
Great result.
Look at the list of our players who were not available:
Yak (injured)
Saha (unfit)
Vaughan (injured)
Fellaini (injured)
Pienaar (injured/suspended)
Osman (injured)
(Did I miss anybody?)
And then, to come out and beat Villa - actually quite comfortably in the end - shows the strength of the squad.
Well done Moyes, well done boys.
Ajay - Jo (Cuptied) if that counts...
I was so impressed with Rodwell today, is he our Fabregas? With 3 more years experience he will still only be 20!! Fellaini had a bad game the other day but also looks good. Arteta no questions. It will be a shame to see one not in the starting 11. Not to mention the other CM?s in Neville, Osman, Cahill..
I reckon we are only a couple of players away from a decent squad (winger).
Just got back from the match and wow ? great result. We out played a very good Villa side for much of the match. A good draw and who knows, see you at the match in the last eight.
Awesome. Brilliant performance by everyone involved.
ps: In Rodwell we have a potential world class player (I don't use that lightly) on our hands. He makes the game look so easy like top players do. He is one of the few remaining missing links.
COYB ? I can smell Wembley!!!!!!!!!
A thrilling day. All good things to the Blues, they earned their well-deserved praise today. Great to see Tim Howard looking loose and back on it after the mugging he took v. Mexico. I know he’s happy to not have that dodgy US back line in front of him...
Who was that strapping fellow in Victor Anichebe’s kit today? Whoever that was, we should consider giving him a future!! The absence of whinging and discovery of pace makes such a difference!! It was as if Moyes was in his ear the whole game, that. Hmmm... Amazing, the effects when one gets religion.
It’s good to be a Blue. COYB!!
For what it’s worth, here’s how I saw it:
Howard - Made one world class save to keep it 2-1, could / should have saved a poorly struck penalty. Other than that he didn’t have many saves to make - 7
Hibbert - Responded well to making a mistake for the penalty and was solid after that. I think he got forward more than Baines in the first half and even got inside the Villa box! - 7
Lescott / Jagielka - Maybe not as flawless as usual. Carew who is usually a handfull was very well marshalled although he slipped out of their pockets once plus they allowed Agbonlahor a free header which he should have scored. Still love this pairing though! - 6 (by their high standards)
Baines - Probably more effective defensively than going forward today. Maybe he missed Peanuts a bit. Kept Milner pretty quiet. Looks the part for me - 7
Neville - Can’t fault his performance today. Solid if unspectacular. Never afraid to show for the ball and keeps it on the deck more often than not these days - 6
Rodwell - Took his goal very well when others would have still been screaming for a penalty! Looks so composed. Was marked as one for the future, but looks like he’s ready now! - 8
Arteta - Got to be Man of the Match for me. First half he simply ran the show. He dictated play like a true master and really gave the Villa midfield the run around all day - 9
Gosling - I thought the lad did very well. If he was quick he’d be lethal! I like that he’s never afraid to take on a man and he caused Villa a few problems with his positive running. Has slotted into the team nicely - 7
Cahill - What can I say? He just keeps doing it. I think his goal today was really vital, it killed off a Villa side that were still very much in it up to that point. Looks like he needs a rest (which he’ll get now with his 5th booking) but you simply can’t fault what he does for this team! His goal celebration was very appropriate and good on him for that - 7
Anichebe - Much improved. He delivered the sort of performance a guy of his build should deliver. He was strong and athletic. His run into the box for the penalty showed pace, power and control. Maybe not ready for the scrap-heap just yet - 8
All in all a great team performance particlularly first half. Confidence seems very high throughout the squad. Is our name on the cup? Who knows... Shame there’s not been many giant killings yet. It is still possible that to win the cup, we might have to beat every one of the current top five! Bring it on!
Here is what could have happened on our first goal.... we have handling on the line against Villa, however, the referee allows play to continue, even though he doesn?t use the advantage signal (the rule is once the advantage is realized in the ref?s mind, that?s when it starts) and Rodwell scores on the advantage, there can no longer be a red card for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity because a goal has been scored. Petrov could have received yellow there, but by rule no red.
what is Osman’s injury btw? Is he going to be available for the next match?
and isnt piennar back?
Away to Newcastle isn’t going to be easy....
Osman?s injury is that he has damaged the part of his brain that deals with putting a shift in against big teams. Doctors are baffled...
Barry - much as Arteta was class today, I think he was eclipsed in midfield by a performance from a player which belied his very young age. Rodwell was simply class today, in one of the biggest games of his life, and shackled the Villa midfield brilliantly. He had Neville and Spud backing him up to take the pressure off but he was simple and effective today. We have got a star in the making.
Honourable mention to Big Vic who played more like the Vic we know and love. Marauding, physical, good touch, the guy played off Cahill superbly.
It is possible that somebody else has already made this point above....I’ve only just got in and not had time to read all the posts.
But just in case I will make the point that I thought Rodwell was phenomenal today. Not because of his goal (which was very welcome) but because of his composure and comfort on the ball. This is a kid (FFS) who is nominally a central defender and yet he can come on the pitch from the start against so-called ’top four’ opposition playing in midfield and (as far as I can recall) never misplaced a pass and never left me feeling anxious and always seemed to know exactly what his plans were and thinking ahead.
He is just turned 18 isn’t he?
Yet he can pick the ball up and distribute it around the pitch with finesse and can switch play with aplomb. If this lad ends up as our holding midfielder then that will do me, but if he ends up one of our centre-backs who can actually play footy, bring the ball out and do something with it he will be brilliant.
For me Arteta was man of the match today with Cahill a close second, in fact they all played well, but the biggest grin on my face as I walked back to the car was reserved for Rodwell! We MUST keep this kid, mark my words he could be another Beckenbauer. Don’t laugh I really mean it!
Whilst he didn’t have the impact going forward he has had in recent games I thought Gosling, playing out of position on the left had a great game. He stopped their full back coming forward and was always available for a pass. He supported Baines when he had to and helped to squeeze Villa in to the middle where Rodwell was magnificent. These two kids are the future of the club.
Ossie is out for just 1 week with a stomach strain according to the OS.
Who’d have thought after his earlier forays in the middle of the park Neville would have been putting in such an acomplished shift of late. Is he becoming the ’unsung hero’ much like Carsley was, allowing others around him to play?
Another good performance it seems today, not a bad draw either (missed the big 3). A good cup run is just what the doctor ordered . (A final appearance would be nice Mr Moyes).
The team were difficult to fault today as I thought they all put in a great performance.... It was all the more impressive given the lengthy injury list and suspensions. A special mention must be given to Arteta, Cahill, Rodwell and Anichebe who were outstanding and turned the game at critical moments.
I was just wondering if any one knew what Cahill?s celebration was all about today. He ran to the corner put his hand up and seemed to point at his black arm band. I think it?s to support Australia after the bush fires and if so bloody good on him. Is that right though?
Adam,
Your right the celebration was a mark of respect for the victims of the Victorian bushfires in Australia. It was pointed out in the news in Australia.
Pluses; The win, the draw, Rodwell, Gosling and big Vics attitude.
The minuses; Setanta, their pundit treating Villa like a Sky 4 team, the position of the Microphone(s) to give the impression that due to all the noise they actually ARE a big team.

I didn’t know Villa were a "big" team?
