The Mail Bag

Oh No! That shirt....

Comments (34)

Oh my God the new kit... if it really is the new kit. I know it's reminiscent of great days but that was a quarter of a century ago!

Just Blue and the badge with a minimum of white on the shirt, white shorts and socks, that is Everton! That 'V' looks like an afterthought, like your mum decided she didn't want your neck to get cold and sewed a piece in!

This has got to be a wind-up surely?

Seen it, its ok but not great! To be honest tho, it could be the worst thing ever designed, and id still go out and buy it if the Everton badge is there!

Nowhere near classy enough for our boys. It looks dated , that V piece is superfluous and why the mention of 1985, to the exclusion of everything else we’ve won ? It makes no sense and I don’t imagine it’ll make much money either if club marketing efforts are anything to go by. What we do need is a special T shirt for the Final along the following lines.........
FA Cup Final
Wembley 2009
Please Keep off the Grass

Can anyyone provide it ? I’ll buy a couple or three.

Dave,

You don’t like the new kit because it looks like an old kit, but you think that the new kit should instead be plain blue with the badge on like it used to be !

Is that not a contradiction in terms ?

Surely people can see that it’s all about marketing ? Le Coq are making an updated version of an old favourite, remiscent of a time when we were kings of England and Europe ? There are only so many variations on a theme and next seasons ’thing’ seems to be retro designs, like Englands new effort and Man Utd’s big white V on the chest.

It’s an excellent marketing tool and reframes Everton as a ’successful’ club (eg casting us as a team who won trophies for the generation that has grown up with a skewed post-Sky perspective).
Having said that for all the retro-is-in vogue I’m not looking forward to next year’s bib top...

I like it. As long as the socks are white and preferably without those ’ankle rinks’ of 1985 I’ll be happy.

It’ll sell and so will the Black and Pink away shirt, especially to the Ladies and girls who won’t have to wait for Breast Cancer Day or whatever to get fleeced as not enough shirts are produced.

Traditional Home kit echoing our past and a groundbreaking away kit ( the use of Pink is a first in the Premier League ) means they have got something for everyone.

Someone has used their brains. With the Everton 2 shop in Liverpool city centre it is clear that some progress is being made and it appears lessons are being learned. About time.

It is another cheap option, why the hell cant we get a decent kit supplier ??

The club really do know how to make a fucking show of us.

John Taylor,

If you go back (as far as I do!) and look at really old and famous kits, Everton were one of the few Clubs who didn’t wear a badge on the shirt (possibly the only Club?) The Blue was considered enough to identify us. My acceptance of the badge is my concession to modernity...so, no, it is not a contradiction in terms. This new kit is shite and we deserve better. Just back to the Blue, minimize the white on the shirt, and I’ll take the badge. That would do for me. Simple and class.

I can’t be certain but the way the shirt has been placed leaves a part of the chest raised, therefore the V might actually form a point at the bottom.

Dave Roberts,

Times change. We’re now live in a world where branding and marketing means everything, and I’m afraid that the plain blue shirt that you crave is little more than a romantic reminiscence.

Football is a global game now and the club have to look to capitalise on that in any way possible. A plain blue shirt with no badge isn’t really going to get that done, is it ?

As for Billy Brad’s comments about Everton not having a marketing policy, what on earth is that all about ? A "cheap option" ? You do understand that the kit suppliers pay us to wear their kits ?

The sihrt is alright. Let ’s all move on.

Now then, the real problem here is that my little lad has been messing about with the keyboard while I’ve been reading the letters page and the text on this site has gone really small. It’s only this site, mind, and it’s driving me insane having to increase the text siz eevery time I open the site.

Does anyone know what’s happened here ?

I like the ’85 team names on the shirt and it’s great that we’re celebrating 25 years of our only European trophy. However, that’s the point. Although I’m proud of that victory all Man Utd and Liverpool fans will just take the piss out of us for a season and it’s been our only European trophy compared their several.

Instead, why not have on it the 2009 FA Cup winners names? It’s relevant and updated and will tell all other fans that we are the holders

Its so obvious whats happening here guys. Its called HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF.
We won the cup in 84 followed by the 84-85 league title whilst wearing the V-Neck jersey.
We’re gonna win the 09 cup followed by the 09-10 league whilst wearing the V-Neck jersey.
I’m going down the bookies to stick a grand on it!!

John , I would like to know how much we will be recieving from this deal ???

Looking at Man City training wear, it looks cheaper than the kit itself.

What is annoying we had a chance to get one of the big sporting brands to sell our kits everywere, instead we get a cheap supplier who dont have thier own stores. You only have to look at L1 in the addidas store, you walk in and thier are images of the shites players on the wall in thier addidas shirts.

Another opportunity missed.

Billy Brad, the Leq Coq Sportif deal includes Kitbag as the supplier.

Kitbag shops are everywhere, and from what I’ve heard there’s gonna be one in L1.

Dave, do you remember we simply had EFC where the badge now is from 1972-78 and EFC above the tower in the 80s?
I think it was Harry Catterick who said something along the lines of ’ we don’t need a badge, the royal blue shirt says it’s Everton’
Does anyone recall the correct quote and/or source?

Scroll to the top of the page and you will see the word TEXT with 4 ’T’s to the right of it. Click on these to change the default setting for text height.

Then give your lad a clip round the ear for reminding you that you are getting old and should probably go to Specsavers :)

Ladies and gents surprised no one has said what Le Coq and Everton are doing yet again is to stiff the supporters with a one season kit again, yes it’s an anniversary and they are within their rights to sell whatever they think will sell but it’s another single season kit. When will the supposed few season kits be enforced to help fans who have a whole lot less money to spread about these days?

Alex, I knew all about the kitbag deal last year. It was kitbag who inssisted on there being a shop in L1 , if it was left to EFC we still wouldnt be represented in our own City.
What frustrates me is the qualitiy, design and marketing of this kit.

Will it be out so the kids can take it on their summer holidays or will it be out when the season starts as per usual.

Billy Brad,

How can you be frustrated at the quality, design and marketing of the kit when it’s not even been officially unveiled yet ?

You haven’t seen the quality and it’s not been marketed yet has it ? It hasn;t even been officially announced that we’re changing to Le Coq Sportif yet.

It seems to me that you’re quite keen to have a bit of a moan about this issue (or any other ?) for no particular reason. Maybe you need to calm yourself down and enjoy the fact that we’re in the FA cup final and doing well.
