Andy or Not Andy

Comments (43)

I read that Andy Van der Meyde is going to be playing for the reserves tonight. The other day I slatted him for robbing the club of his wages over the past few years... which is true. So I'm not sure if I want him to do well for us or not anymore.

Let's have a show of hands, do we want Andy to play for the first team or not???

Come on, if he was fit for his one game a season, he could hardly make the situation any worse.

So er.. put me down as a yes?

I’d like to see him get one last chance in the first team, not that he deserves it, but I would like to see us try and get something back from him.

Would like to see him play but not against Manure, he would get ripped a new arse and then everyone would hate him again and he wouldnt feature again. Put him on the bench and when Arteta is ineffective again try him for 10 minutes and then start him against Bolton instead of Osman and move Arteta in the middle with Manou and Segundo ( good scouse names them)

I hope like hell he stays fit and starts playing some good football. He may have been a waste of time so far but we need every player we can get and and we are crying out for an effective winger. At least he seems to be making a genuine attempt to play footaball again.

He hasnt had the best of times at the club. But i think he should have one last chance because surely he cant be any worse than some of them that we have playing regularly at the minute (no names)!

He owes the club something and his crimes aren’t exactly in the same league as Joey Barton. He’s had a season rotting in the reserves so time to forgive and forget I say. If he can get into the team on merit then give him a go.

I?ve said for a long time that he deserves another chance. Not all his problems have been self-created. He is one of the most naturally talented players at the club and is the best crosser of the ball that we have.

Pre-season he looked as good as anyone. He can still turn his career around. I?d have him on the bench on Saturday.

I say play him and let Arteta play in the centre. I have been saying for ages that Arteta has been well and truley sussed on the right wing. It would be much harder for teams to double up on him if he was given the chance to roam.

This is all great and I would probably give him a game in the UEFA Cup / errr Carling Cup / errr FA Cup somewhere to see if he?s up for it. Not before we work in training on stopping leaking goals.

I can't see anyway VDM will ever make the grade at Everton now, he has been away from regular football for far too long. It's a great shame because the VDM for Inter Milan and also Holland was a flying winger with pace and a good end product. I remember once watching a game between Inter and Arsenal at Highbury in the Champs League and he really did look the part and scored a goal just to top his play off.

For some reason he has just flopped beyond imagination since he came he three years ago; fitness, personal life... whatever it really is, we don't know but I cannot see him ever getting it back.

Even though I had my doubts about why we were getting him for such a small fee in 2005, I was excited by the prospect of him maybe becoming a new Kanchelskis and also excited by the fact I had seen him play before he joined Everton and was expecting good things.

It's a pity he never made it because he is the one type of player that we just do not have at this club... a winger who can genuinely play out wide and get crosses in.

No matter what I think of Pienaar or Arteta, neither of them can be described as out-and-out wingers and so to continue to play them on the flanks will not work in the long term.

Ok, Pienaar did well to set up Osman's goal on Saturday but, hand on heart, how many people honestly think Pienaar will be the long-term answer playing on the left wing??

We need to get some genuine width, we need to get a decent balance to our side, something which we haven't had for too many years. Sadly I don't really see VDM as being one of those players..

No problem... in a couple of years we should get Neville, Giggs and Scholes from Man Utd and maybe ten years from now Rooney... We are the place to unload older players or crocks or even problem players so we may hang on to VDM and get Barton when he is on probation...

What a joke. The best crosser in the squad at the moment is Baines... he should be tried IN FRONT of Lescott and have Osman on the bench because Ossie is not a 90-minute player despite his efforts. He is very lightweight and in the hurly burly is often brushed aside. He is still good for certain matches but not for the whole 90 minutes.

Fat, slow, disinterested (apart from being VERY interested in his weekly pay cheque). He is our version of Winstone Bogarde. I’m praying for a Dutch team ( FC Pissenup ?) to take him away.

Would make my worst ever EFC side... with stars like Kroldrup and Bret Angel!

What a waste of money.

Seeing as he is one of the few players we have that can play the wing, beat a man, and put in an accurate cross, then I would love to see him play again. The reason he has not graced our first team is because Moyes doesn’t like him. VDM certainly fucked up, and Moyes has never forgiven him. Hence, he lets a good first teamer rot in the reserves. Typical Moyes.

I would make AdVM captain of a ?Moyes No-Show XI. How about this for a line-up?

Wessells; Jacobsen, Kroldrup, Gardener, Pistone:
Van der Meyde, Gravesen (Mark2), Ling Wei Feong, Da Silva, Bosnar; Rodrigo.
Subs; Saed, Plessis and Wright ? on the basis that he never showed up in the right spot at the right time!

Any other nominations?

In the games I saw him play before he joined Everton, I thought he was really good and I was genuinly very excited when we signed him but fuck knows what went wrong! He should be ripping clubs to pieces! He can be really good but he should just shut up keep saying things like "I'm going to try really hard in training and if I get my chance..." blah blah blah ? just shut it and IF you do get a chance, take it with both hands and don't let go. Or if not, fuck off and play for Tottenham or some other shite team.

I would love to see VDM redeem himself at Everton with 10 goals this season.. who am I kidding? Both Vaughan and Anichebe would be picked as LW before he will even get a sniff. Not to mention Baines, Saha... I think he would be about 10th choice at the moment to be honest.

I don’t think that it’s a co-incidence that our slight improvement in form has come on the back of Pienaar’s retrun to action. The guy has some pace, actually moves off the ball, can control it, and has a brain. There are others in the team who could learn a lot from him.

I would always give Van the Man a chance - he is good on the ball and can make things happen but just needs to get fit!

Once he settles in and finds out how to work the satnav so he can find the ground it will be like signing a new player.

Blair, I will nominate Geoff Nulty for the worst EFC team ever. However he played 32 times and scored twice which is better than your two nominees combined so he’s probably ineligible. As for worst all time player in terms of contribution, it?s got to be Glenn Keeley - 30 minutes before being sent off in the derby where the RS went on to win 5-0. All time low.

Years ago on the eve of a new season he was on a stomach pump and I was roundly criticised on this page for saying that he should be sacked and sued for breach of contract. As the years rolled by he banked an annual wage of at least a million and a half quid while at the same time coming up with excuse after excuse for not playing. At one time Evertons head physio is on record as saying that AVDM a proffesional footballer ffs injured his leg just by kicking a ball.

What I fail to understand is the sheer gullability of TW posters who beg for him to have chance after chance. How many seasons must we carry this charlatan, how many chances should he be allowed, how many more millions should he get before people wake up to this fraud.

He is a complete waste of space. My opinion has not changed and I look forward to the day I read that he no longer is on our books.

I have AVDM in my Championship Manager team. He?s very good. Plenty of assists, good with the dead ball and scores the occasional goal or two. Mind you, Beattie is also in the team and scores for fun and Everton on top of the league and doing well in the Champions League.

Back to reality. If he offers up an improvement to the tripe that Everton has served up so far this year, I?m all for him playing.

The manager should use anybody available if we pay their wages. If like AvdM they are a useless piss-taker, look to offload them at every opportunity, but while they are at the club use them if they serve a purpose. Whether he serves a purpose, I don't know?

Ok, so he?s cost us millions for no return, but that is because all footballers in the Premier League cost many thousands each per week. I bet every team has some perma-crock in the reserves that cost too much and has done fuck all.

However, if he can stay fit for the rest of this season (all pigs cleared and ready for take off?), score a few goals and make a few decent crosses, then if he is in a blue shirt and is trying then I?ll cheer for him. It's a long shot though.

Since any mention of AvDM naturally leads into a discussion of Everton’s worst ever players, I will put out my particular teamsheet. Will play a cynical 5-4-1 to ensure the striker is completely isolated:

Espen Baardsen: Apparently get bored picking the ball out of the net four times in his solitary performance for Everton. Then promptly retired at 25 and became a hedge fund manager...hmmm, may see him back in a green jersey then.

Glen Keeley: Illustrious one game wonder for the blues...sent off in the first half in the 1982 5-0 debacle against Liverpool.

Marc Hottiger: Only real impression made at Everton was on our bank balance...brought in for 750,000, 17 appearances, then a tidy bit of business selling him on for 25,000.

Per Kroldrup: "Moyes’ Folly" 5 million from Udinese...and one appearance. Will be difficult to top that. Perhaps our sponsors funded the transfer as his first club was Aalborg Chang!

Slaven Bilic: Should have hired him as manager, if only to get back the million quid he still owes us.

Ray Atteveld: The first of our trio of Dutch purchases over the years. A Right Back Harvey purchase, promptly sold by Kendall II to poor Bristol City. At least he made it on to the grass a significant more times than AvDM. What is it about Everton and RB purchases over the past 20 odd years?

Stefan Rehn: With Atteveld, our first dip into the international market in 1989...and an unqualified disaster. Hapless Swede who had to be pulled off after being bullied against Millwall...and he had only just come on as a sub. One of his better 4 - 5 performances for the club.

AvDM: see any reference to him on TW.

Vinny Sideways: Does well in Tottenham’s Worst XI as well. Spurs fans still befuddled why we paid 2 million odd for him.

Claus "The Scouse" Thomsen: Apparently a shop mannequin dressed in a blue strip and placed in midfield just prior to kickoff.

Brett Angell: Oh dear. Calling him a striker violates the Trades Description Act...as evidenced by his conversion from a lumbering Defender earlier in his career. Some Everton fans insist he scored a goal against Chelsea.

Manager: Mike Walker - 10 month reign and 6 wins from 31 games for The Silver Fox. Had the cheek to ask for his FA Cup Winner bonus months after he’d been told to sling his hook.
