Coleman goes out on loan

I put up a lead story on Friday regarding the loan move of Seamus Coleman to Blackpool but it seemed odd that Vital Football was the only source I could find confirming this story.

It must have been completed on Thursday because of some loan deadline I was unaware of... so the usual puzzle about why nothing whatsoever was mentioned on the Official Everton Website until well Friday night.

Now they could have been waiting to confirm the temporary transfer of his registration but, if there was a deadline, surely that would have had to be completed?

I'm just puzzled as usual that we don't have anything about what I consider to be a very important story actually on the Everton website — even as a possibility.

If it was really going on, why could they not at least say something? All I could find was a small item form the Mirror in What the Papers Say"... speculation from a week ago!

As to my feeling about the wisdom of this move... well, it could be a great opportunity for the lad, obviously. An opportunity he is clearly not going to be getting any time soon under Moyes — unless we get hit by injuries... something which seems to have been a common theme in recent seasons as an excuse for failure of the team to push on to where it clearly is capable of being when unencumbered by such injury problems.

Clearly a tough decision, of course, but I think a wrong one. I would much rather see Seamus Coleman running with the ball down the right wing in an Everton shirt that in the tangerine hue of Blackpool FC.

Is this really a big story?

An Everton reserve joins a Championship side.

HOLD THE BACK PAGE.

Coleman was completely slaughtered by Benfica and looked very average when he started against BATE Borisov.

But he has shown enough coming on as a sub (particulary against Spurs) to suggest he may develop into a decent player.

Everton don’t need him at the present so its a good move to loan him out to Blackpool and let him gain some experience.

At the very least it will end the pointless arguments over Coleman Vs Neville/Hibbert.

If Coleman is as good as some people on here say he is then he should piss all over the Championship sides.

Maybe he’ll even win Championship Player Of The Month? If he’s as good as some say.

At the very least a couple of months against Championship oppsosition will give us a chance to rate him and not just speculate he’s better then Neville/Hibbert.

Some noises that QPR also want him on loan. Either would be a good move for the player and hardly cause for concern.

Looks like Moyes has already settled for 8th....or 9th and no doubt all his friends in the media will say he’s had another good season. So far have our standing and standards fallen!

We’ve settled for 8th because we’ve let our third choice right back go on loan to a mid-table championship side? Yeah right!

Christ almighty. Would people please stop talking about Coleman like he is the messiah. He’s played a couple of games, had a couple of bright moments... and thats it. He shows a bit of potential, nothing more. As Brendan says he is our third choice RB so him going on loan is not really a depletion of our squad and says nothing about our ambitions.

A win against Bolton and we win seven on the bounce at home for the first time in twenty years yet you keep banging on about Seamus Coleman!
Are things that bad that we have to play our third choice right back?
If the lad is good enough he’ll make it into the first team in good time. Simple as.
Do you think Moyes just doesn’t like him or something?
It’ll be good to see how he gets on at Blackpool, rather than judging him on the basis of 20 minutes against a nervous Spurs.

I think the point many are missing is that he gives the team a different dimension as a substitute. Substitutes can be used in a number of ways; replacing like for like for injury if the match is going your way or making a change to the dynamic. If you are happy to think Neville or Hibbert as the only way to go with a right back at the club you really need to start watching the game beyond Goodison Park and see how it’s changed since the dark ages.

Gavin - or it might be a way of testing and developing a player who many see as a potential first choice over Pip and Hibbo, but hey thanks for lecture.

Just so glad that everybody is happy with our er,,,, PROGRESS. A fool can see we need a more positive right-back.....but then Captain Pip is so central to Moyes’ superlative tactics!
John McLoughlin
10   Posted 19/03/2010 at 13:18:57

Its not a question of if we are happy, It only concerns Moyes he picks the team and we have no say in it.
He is obviously happy with Neville, Hibbert and Heitinga that we have more than enough cover that it will allow a young and raw also untested right back to go out and get the necessary experiance.
Hopefully he’ll come back the stronger for it and next season make a biger challenge for a 1st team place.

For crying out loud, is Coleman the next Messi or somthing? He is a young RB and give him his due he did well in a couple of games when he came on. Mucch of that was due to a positive intent and enthusiasm and fair play to him for that.

However to say Moyes has settled for 8th/9th on this basis is rubbish in my opinion, and on any other basis for that matter. Coleman will get the chance to play a few games and hopefully tis will do him good and he will come back a better player for it and have a real go at the first team next season. We still can make Europe (longshot I know) but it is a gamble to throw in a youngter at this point when we have a Pip (50 + England caps!), Hibbert (for all his limitations a good defender), Heitinga (love him!), even Gosling is an option in the extreme.

And Brian Wilson would the test I would be left with be Neville or Hibbert and not a lot of difference between them? Yeah thanks for that lecture I already knew the answer to that was just hoping that after eight years the manager might not be as myopic as some supporters and have learned that substitutes and tactic changes aren’t a bad idea.

John I hope he does come back stronger and better and hopefully found a manager who will play him or he could disappear into the lower leagues never to be heard of again.

Sending a 21 year old out to get some 1st team experience, to put him in a good position to be the long term replacement of an ageing rightback who’s given us 5 years of service....

Consistency comes from experience. Rodwell is showing this principle after he was laid off for 6 weeks. He needed it.

Sending a 21 year old out to get some 1st team experience, and there’s something wrong in this - how?

And Micheal, in between your thinly veiled barbs at Moyes.

I’d rather see us nuture Coleman and allow him to develop properly.

And he’ll be in a better position to exceed in your demanding expectations having faced different types of opposition in the Championship including hard cases and pacey wingers...

whilst getting a higher level of match fitness for next season by playing 90 minutes reguarly (like Donovan) instead of 30 or 40 with us every now and again, and not just reserve action.

Coupled by the fact he’s being offered a new contract in the summer, if anything it says Moyes wants to see Coleman ready for the 1st team next season. You should be pleased. Why the long face?

Hmm, I am a bit wary of the clamour for Coleman. I am actually fairly confident in Moyes’ assesment of a player in terms of being ready for regular games in the Premier league. He often gets critiqued for not taking a gamble, or sticking to favourites etc. And in some respects - notably when we need to bring on impact subs or change our system when losing - I think this is fair critique.

However, I do think that the only example of a player perhaps being wrongly mistrusted is Baines. Lescott was firmly entrenched ahead of him until injury forced a reshuffle. Quickly Baines proved his worth. On the other hand, when you look at players he has signed and at players who have emerged through the ranks that have been let go after rarely featuring in the first team I would suggest Moyes gets it right. Often there is a similar clamour from fans to ’give them a go’. With perhaps the exception of Simon Davies, I would suggest few have gone on to perform better for a club in this league.

Signings:
Kroldrup - yes he signed him, quickly realised he wasn’t up to it.
McFadden - Ditto. Now bench warming for Brum
Shandy - desperation signing, shocking wastrel

Youth products:
Mark Hughes - currently at Walsall.
Nick Chadwick - currently at Barrow FC after a steady descent through the leagues
JP Kissock - Hamilton and crocked apparently. According to Wikipedia he is also shagging Maddona, so maybe he has gone onto higher things! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Paul_Kissock

A brief example, with some glaring omissions most likely. But contrast these to players like Fellaini who was doubted and was persisted with. Or Rooney, Rodwell and to an extent Big Vic and you see what I mean.

Somewhat flippantly (many a true thing said in jest?) maybe Moyes just can’t smell a decent fullback at 2ft?

I was hoping to see more of Coleman this season. Seeing him run past the halfway line, and putting in crosses. Pip & Hibbo may be "honest men" but they are not the way forward for any team that would have ambition.

Gavin's point about using him as a sub to change a game was accurate, he was the only reason we got a point out of Spurs at Goodison.

18   Posted 19/03/2010 at 16:55:53

I think its a good move, means first team football and adds to his development. Has played for the first team this season so knows that he is in Moyes mind. Being out on loan did wonders to Osman and finally brought him through. Looks like Neville will be at Right Back for rest of seaon, not a bad thing, we can’t afford to lose any more games this season as points mean prizes!

19   Posted 19/03/2010 at 16:58:31

One or two of he critics appear to overlook the fact of our present position in the League. W e simply cannot hope to gain a place in the first four, maybe 7th or 8th must be the summit of our ambition.

Is this the time to experiment with an untried youngster at right full after a couple of interesting run outs for 20 or so mins. against Spurs.

Speaking for myself, I think this is a smart move by Moyes, give the lad a run out for the next few Saturdays with Blackpool, it will give him good experience.

Next year, well that’s quite different. I imagine if he has a successful run with Blackpool, Moyes might consider giving him a run with the first team, even if just as a sub

Methinks there is too much ado made of players going on loan. Benfica, from whom we were handed a hammering and lesson in attacking football had, according to its OS over 20 players out on loan plus half a dozen loaned in.

It make good sense and should be done more often to loan out players that might otherwise not even make the bench.

In fact, I would have an age limit of 18 for the academy. A player picked up as a school boy would have had ten years of top class coaching by the time he reaches that age. He would either benefit or be exposed in a more competitive environment.

The only exception I would make to the above scenario would be for the likes of Rooney and Rodwell.

Sky Sports just reported that Coleman has been sent out on loan for a month. Unbelievable... What is going on?

No wonder we never move forward. Wish Moyes would explain the reasons behind these decisions.

22   Posted 19/03/2010 at 17:57:24

Andy - like you, I wanted Baines brought on to LB more quickly. There were injury problems which got in the way. And, still, we haven’t got what I would call real cover for him come the awful day. Neville? How many England caps?

The right back ’problem’ is, for me, more serious. Almost any pro footballer can play at RB (including most of the goalkeepers). Without trotting out the full details, the bottom line is that 9/10 in the game are right sided, stand on their left foot when kicking a ball. I blame youth coaches (and people who should know better) for regarding left-footers (irrespective of baptism) as "one footed". Bollox.

So Coleman is doing his best to gain a high status place in the position where not only can almost anyone else play, but which is currently occupied by the current on-field manager, Mr motivator Cap’n Pip. No doubt first on the team sheet (ok- second, Big Tim first).

There’s nothing for him in the rest of this season. Blackpool - a very good outfit these days - looks good, but only if he gets the games he needs. There has to be some sort of verbal agreement in this sort of deal, hasn’t there?

Mark Reid, you made me spill coffee all over the bloody keyboard!

"... 90 minutes regularly (like Donovan) instead of 30 or 40 minutes..."

That’s a pearler! Is that the same Donovan who Moyes used as sub in his last three games?

How many games did he play in for us?

And in how many of those was he on the field for 90 minutes?

(I’d have no delight in telling you the sad stats if I could... but the Chelsea (H) Match Report file has some problem... Who edits this lousy website anyway?!?!)

24   Posted 19/03/2010 at 19:29:20

Andy Morden - I don’t think it’s possible to be a decent right-back at 2 feet - that’s just far too short to be effective in the role!
Keith Glazzard
25   Posted 19/03/2010 at 19:28:07

Michael - is it Friday night? Is it the coffee? Got my second Gaggia Baby in 25 years today. Caffeine as nature intended. This has nothing to do with football - certainly around Goodison where I doubt a proper espresso can be bought. Oh well, never mind, the fare on the pitch has improved.

I wonder if Coleman will be back? I’m a fan. And he is a possible future for us. If he really is going to the seaside this must be Moyes saying ’if you can make it there ...’ For him, and for all of us, I hope he has a great time and forces his way into contention when he gets back.

26   Posted 19/03/2010 at 20:55:55

With Baines at LB and Yobo and Heitinga as CBs we’ve got Hibbert, Neville and Jags that can play RB (or switch Jags and Heitinga in the CB position.

So Cloeman is our 4th choice RB who the manager wants to get some games under his belt in a no pressure situation.

What’s the problem?
Dan Brierley
27   Posted 19/03/2010 at 21:07:53

The problem Eric, is that some people think Coleman has something that can give our team a new attacking dimension down the right hand side. This is based on him having a couple of substitute cameos in which he did well. The problem with Coleman in my eyes is that he cant actually defend yet. This is clearly a problem when playing in defence! And given its only based on a couple of appearances, it shows that knee jerk mentality again.

I still maintain that Hibbert is still one of the best defenders in our side, however the game now demands wing backs instead of full backs. His lack of forward ability does limit the teams potential in attacking, regardless of his defensive ability. Coleman seems to be the opposite.

If Coleman can get near the Baines level, we have cracked it. I think sending him out on loan is a great idea. Maybe he has started to believe the hype around him, and got a bit ahead of himself. Blackpool might be the cold shower he needs if thats the case. Now we will all have the ability to monitor his progress, which up to now is based on potential only. Lets hope he can mature, and come back ready to play first team football.

Dick Anderson I think that is the worst post I have ever read on toffeeweb! He didn’t play at all badly against Benfica. I suggest you actually watch it again you muppet!

This is disgusting. He should have been given his chance as he earned it on merit. David Moyes is the guy who gives youth a chance. Give me a fucking break! Instead we will be no doubt treated to watching our useless captain, who struggles to find a team mate with a throw let alone a pass, and his not so able deputy Hibbert for the rest of the season. Wow i can hardly wait!

You are so right Chris, hence the reason that united have 14 players out on loan right now, getting that all important match experience.

All of you people complaining that Moyes has given up on the league by loaning out Seamus rather than keeping him on the bench, what would you rather have, a desperate challenge for Europe this season, or a concerted push for Champions league next season. Getting 90 minutes in the championship will help Seamus a lot more than the odd 10-15 minutes as a sub in the premiership.

Strikes me as this is a poor excuse for some Moyes bashing.

Jesus christ, the lad had a good half against Tottenham.
Talk about a non story.
Anyway as long as its got a chance of the imbeciles having a pop at the 3x manager of the year its always worth a discussion.
Give me strength.

33   Posted 20/03/2010 at 05:27:48

in all fairness the lad in two games has done about as much as any other right back we’ve had this season. We are a more explosive outfit with him, end of (Little Ossie would jiz himself to have the fight that lad has down the wing.) Irrespective, overweight, has-been losers like us can debate up and down whether it’s a good move but the fact is the boy has gone. Let’s just hope it’s a good move in the end. I think the best thing for us sadly, is to not make it to europa again and really, really make a push next season for fourth. Hopefully with Coleman charging down that oh, so barren wing. That’s the only way for us to get fourth and the only way for us to be sold In the long run (whether that’s a good thing is for a different post all together).

The lad needs games, this time last year he’d just moved from bloody Sligo!! The League of Ireland is rubbish, but obviously Seamus has potential. For the people here that think he’s Cafu or something-GET REAL. Give the lad time to learn his trade, he’s nowhere near good enough for our first team, but for injuries he wouldn’t have made the bench this season and would’ve been loaned out earlier in the season. Laughable thread really!!

You got to laugh at Kenrick’s thinly veiled attempt to criticise Moyes again. I remember people writing shite like this when we had Idal Tal and even AvdM and we know how shite they turned out to be. So I think we’d best leave the team selection to the coaches at the club who see the players far far more rather us fans.

He’s played about an hour, yes he did produce a couple of raging bull moments but the lad cant defend. Perhaps when he’s been exposed by a couple of old pros in the lower division — and it will happen — the clamour for him to play will give way to a bit of common sense.
this guy is a relative late comer to this level, he has half a chance... if people will let him develop.

Back to the oringinal point, it is a matter of genuine interest to most Blues but once again the OS seems to be operating in a different time zone

If I’m not mistaken didn’t he receive the MotM award against Spurs. I think some of the comments here are more than a little churlish. Its a shame that when some suggest the lad should be given an opportunity off the bench they’re immediately derided. Some go as far as to suggest that others are likening him to some of the top right backs in the world. To date I’ve seen no one make those claims other than his detractors. Some people really do need to get a grip.

It constantly amazes me how fellow Evertonians can get so angry and insulting towards one another.

Doing so over a subject like this just intensifies that feeling.

Having said that, I can see both sides of both sides.

For some reason that seems to puzzle most of us, it is clear that Coleman - despite some brief but highly inspirational appearances - is not going to figure in the first team this season. Therefore, giving him the opportunity to get some competitive experience, at a decent level with Blackpool, is a good idea.

However, with a season-shaping run-in for us and with the ever-present threat of injuries, the timing does not appear perfect.

What a shame that, with Fellaini out and the 'holding midfielder' position seemingly up for grabs, Neville cannot be moved there (so David Moyes doesn't have to drop him)... Heitinga put alongside Jagielka for a central defensive 'dream team'... and Coleman given a run at right back.

Puzzling isn't it when so many people seem to see the merit in that, but a manager doesn't?

And much as I am not seeking to knock him, how Hibbert can push Coleman into third place is worrying for next season and into the future.

After Hibbert was painfully exposed in the Cup Final (which highlighted a major deficiency and was not just a one off), what better circumstances could there be for giving Coleman a try.

Lay off the lad for Benfica too. He was pitched in at left back and was one of 11 in a useless team performance. Judge him instead from the Tottenham game, where he turned things on their head with his pace and will-to-win.

I think it's a pity - and something of a mystery - that we'll not see him in an Everton shirt for some time...

I happened to be at the Blackpool match on Staurday and watched the young Coleman for a full 90 minutes. Initially he looked very nervous and seemed out of his depth defensively when Crystal Palace went 2-0 up. He certainly didn't look match fit and seemed to want too much time on the ball. However the second half saw Blackpool playing with much more attacking verve and Coleman seemed far more at home.

He played some neat football and drove down the line often, supplying several crosses and linking up with the impressive Charlie Adam, a talented playmaker who Moyes should also keep an eye on.

Overall though, Coleman has a long way to go before he can justify a first team birth for Everton. Like many have already stated on this thread, he looks great going forward but defensively he comes up short.

He showed a lot of promise and with more games, experience and a good pre-season he may well force his way into Moyes's reckoning and prove himself hard to ignore.

41   Posted 23/03/2010 at 15:56:37

Damian, what are you doing? You know you can't come on with your logic and take away from the "Coleman is the new Messiah and Moyes is a dope for not playing him" masses.

Actually watching him play doesn't measure up to what they have in their heads about his wonderous moments against Spurs.

Great move by Moyes giving him some match time with the Fizzy Drink League, as he is not going to get it in the Premiership unless injuries hit, when we can....wait for it.....recall him back to play for us. He is a canny thinker that Moyes, isn't he?

And David, can we let the "Hibbert was exposed in the final against Chelsea" mantra go. We know he was but guess what?, players have bad games when just back from injury and when the player in front of you doesn't give you cover and certainly when you are laughingly booked in the first 10 minutes for a player falling over you, allowing one of the most improved players in the league have a free run at you.
