Not such a Big Game?

Although we're doing our best to get on the hootin' tootin' bandwagon to Rustenburg in ramping up the tempo for this weekend's massive World Cup clash between England and the USA, I can't seem to suppress this nagging feeling that the game will inevitably be a disappointment. I shouldn't say it, but the first games in each group are usually cagey affairs, with no-one taking any risks, and either side often happy with a draw as that keeps their options open.

Don't get me wrong — the prospect of seeing Tim Howard and Landon Donovan show up the non-Everton dandies of England has me quite jazzed. Not that the USA are much to write home about — if anything, I think they are one of the poorer teams to watch in terms of entertaining football — or the lack thereof. But the prospect of an upset (if that is what a win for them would be) is too good to resist.

It would have been better perhaps to have them meet in the final group match with everything hanging on the result... although often things can already be decided by then, so the middle game might actually have been the best. But I hope the USA really do sense the wonderful opportunity to recreate the shocker from 60 years ago, when a bunch of semi-professional ex-pats playing under the USA flag wopped the Limeys 1-0 in Brazil. I hope this time they remember that victory, and go all out to 'stun' England!

So it's New World versus Old World — both geopolitically and in terms perhaps of the way football is going as the long slow ascent of the National USA side continues, supported by an equally slowly but consistently growing MLS.

Many Brits continue to underestimate the level of interest in real football (aka soccer — originally a very English word, BTW!) in the States, almost in spite of the number of American players that have featured in the Premier League over the last few years... and especially in the Royal Blue of Everton.

Soccer surpassed baseball as the Number 1 participation sport in the USA some years ago, and the TV coverage they have planned for this 2010 World Cup on ESPN (1 & 2) is way more than in previous years. It seems they may use even more English commentators who actually know what they are talking about.

I'm one of those Evertonians who have no affinity for the current players in the England squad, and far more interest in players who have a much more meaningful connection with my club — Everton. So, for me, it's GO USA!!!

I'm getting untold stick simply for not "believing" that England will win the World Cup! I too feel no affinity with the international team but I actually would like "us" to win it. I'm not against England and I am English after all, but to be told I'm negative because I simply dont think "we" will win it quite stuns me.

I'd love Everton to win the PL next year, but I don't think we will. Doesn't mean I'm not an Evertonian or that my negativity will somehow have an adverse effect on our chances... does it?

Spot on there Mark. Exactly the same for me. I'm surrounded by Canadians who hope England thump the USA, and here I am, the only Englishman in my company, who couldn't give a shite.

It's a funny old game!!

I hope Howard and Donovan play blinders and Gerrard's England get well and truly what they deserve. A nice long fall back down to earth.

Reluctantly I agree with the sentiments, in the fact that I’m British and proud of it, but I just cannot stand the media surrounding the national side, which if personified would be a big fat mouthy cockney bastard, who’d be insufferable if he won and would throw a tantrum if he loses. Aided and abetted by some of the most obnoxious footballers on the planet.

I know when Saturday comes, I’ll have a few beers or a couple of glasses of wine and cheer them on, but if Landon knocked a couple in? Well wouldn’t be the end of the world would it?

ps: Michael Kenrick, are you based in the States?

Being an American supporter (GASP!) I will be cheering for the US. Not just for the roots aspect but because for god's sake... Gerrard?!?.. Lampard?! Who the hell wants to cheer for them...??

I'd rather cheer for some of these MLS guys whose bonus for playing in the World Cup ACTUALLY meant something to them despite being something like $25k.

Predictions:

Engerland, first game – cagey, probably lose;
Engerland, second game – loss or draw at best
Engerland, third game – win and play like world beaters and scrape through group stage as 2nd.

Meet a decent side and get pumped, cue the arse-kissing journalists and any or all of the following:

It was the ball;
It was the ref;
It was the climate;
It was injuries and bad luck...

Not they were shite and failed in yet another tournament.

Well, my money, as in most World Cups, goes on Germany to get to the quarter finals and that's money in the bank.

It would be interesting to see the comments about Saturday's game if say, Baines and Jags where lining up on Saturday... bitter anyone?

10   Posted 09/06/2010 at 20:33:33

@ Gavin, get a life mate: 3-1, cagey for about the first 25 mins. No problem... everyone seems to think the games against Mexico and Japan is the way England will play for the whole tournament. You're 'avin' a laugh — no chance.

By the end of the second game, England will have qualified. It's a done deal.

James Stewart, sorry, mate but I remember how many comments slagged off Howard in goal last season for his work on dealing with crosses into his box. Case closed on that one.

Today in the "Mail online" the guy was chatting about how most people in the media were down-playing the England squad and how miserable everyone seems to be about our prospects. I thought this was a true reflection and for once I was happy with this.

England probably won't win the World Cup but by Christ whilst I'm English then I don't give a toss who plays for them — I'll be behind them all the way as I am for whom ever plays for Everton.

"Don't get me wrong — the prospect of seeing Tim Howard and Landon Donovan show up the non-Everton dandies of England has me quite jazzed. Sorry Michael, but you sometimes you just can't defeat patriotism. That particular piece of comment had me rolling on the floor. Never mind, the Yanks will be great until they look at the score after 90 mins.

Michael, aren't you South African? (or have I made that up!) In which case there is absolutely no issue in you not supporting England! I, on the other hand am very much supporting England — as I have said before football is a team game and I couldn't give a hoot who is playing — I'm cheering for the team/country not individuals. I'm sure a few dickheads have sported the royal blue over the years!

Incidentally I've just spent a fortune on a new Toshiba TV and if England win the World Cup, I get my money back.

COME ON ENGLAND!

I'm presuming you're not English, Michael? Why would English Everton supporters not support England just because there's no Everton players in the English team?

I couldn't give a shit how Tim Howard or Donovan do for America — hope they do really badly. Same goes for Cahill, Pienaar etc... Premier League starts again in August.

Gerrard, Terry, Lampard et al failed when they were at their peak in the last World Cup. Four years have passed since then and they are a yard slower, their strengths and weaknesses have been thouroughly exposed and they are more prone to injury.

I would love it if Landon creams that money grabbing Ashley Cole. Despite saying that, I expect England to scrape a win and the Hype to reach mega proportions.

Michael — "aka soccer — originally a very English word, BTW!" Yeah the posh rugby-playing ones who think holding the ball in your hands is football. Clue's in the name guys.

Anyone of the Americans seen Time Magazine's World Cup feature? Written by a blue and keeps sneaking our players in. His four players to watch? David Villa, Gianluigi Buffon, Steven Pienaar and Tim Howard. Brilliant Agent Elliott, nice work.

Gavin, are you English? If not, then your bitterness is quite amusing, if you are, then your self-hating is pathetic.

As I mentioned on another thread, I agree with Tim (13). I support Everton, not their individual players. I hope all our lads go out in the group stage and get home early, safe and sound, for a nice rest and good start to pre-season feeling like they've got something to prove. I hope England fight tooth and nail all the way through and win the final after extra time, with all their players knackered, mentally exhausted, and lacking any kind of motivation or ambition for next season having achieved world football's ultimate goal. Then the 24-year-rule would be even more absolutely definitely guaranteed to come to fruition than it is now.

I'm sorry but I hate the national side. I hate the FA so I've never supported England except when they play Wales. Baines's ommision from the squad is a sad truth that there's bias to certain clubs. Fabio Capello spends far too much time watching Aston Villa. I struggle to support a team that shows no national pride. I hate John Terry, Frank Lampard, and most of all Carragher.

Ireland should be in South Africa now rather than the cheating French. Fifa's ridiculous seedings mean that qualifiers are a non-contest in which average countries like Bosnia, Belgium, Poland and Northern ireland have no chance of qualifying.

I am Everton first, England second, but Everton aren't playing in the World Cup.

Do I think England can win the World Cup? Yes

Do I think England will win the World Cup? No, Brazil will.

Do I think Everton will win the Premier League next season? No, but I will still support them.

Ted (#13): I'm English... not South African. But I can't say I like the English team, the squad, the FA or any part of the entire set-up to be perfectly honest. Well, there's that Rooney fella. I always like watching him.... but that's the Everton connection again.

You probably missed it, but we had an extensive discussion of this topic the other week, with a wide range of positions from English Evertonians... and the usual problems that creates for individuals who think we should all be like sheep, saying and doing exactly the same.

David (#3): Yes, I'm currently working in the US.

Mike (#14); I kinda like your scenario of all the Everton players returning early and fresh, with England winning and debilitating the Sky4 stars in the process, opening the way for a good end run on the title! Yes!!! But we all have to believe!!!

England have no excuse whatsoever if they don't get out of the group as they have the easiest possible draw, but I can't see them going far with the likes of Heskey in the side. The only thing they've got going for them is that Capello appears to have a bit more about him than Eriksson did. I mean who can forget the Trinidad & Tobago match in the last World Cup?!

As Ireland didn't make make it I'll be watching dispassionately, but I don't know what the feck I'm going to do if England meet France...

Brendan, I agree England v France will offer quite a dilemma. As an Irishman, I will happily support Scotland, the two Irelands or even Wales. It's nothing to do with politics but more to do with press hype.

England seem to me to represent all I despise about football. I have many friends who are British to the core who would be glad to see England lose to a team of Nazi war criminals. I think there is a serious article to be written about this topic if anyone feels like taking it up.

I'm looking forward to the festival of football, as a football lover, not because the media/Walkers/Mars bars tell me I should. I hope there's no shit over there involving Engerland fans, or any other idiots... but I'm looking forward to it inspite of also liking this website.

Much to dislike about the whole England thing, the FA, the golden generation bollocks, waiting on Gareth Barry (WTF?), the odious John Terry, the perpetual presence of Emile Heskey (1 goal in last decade), no Jagielka (WTF?). And hey, if they really wanted a strong, athletic, confident deep sitting midfielder and FEC (by most pundits) then how come Jack Rodwell didn't get a look in?

Unlike much of the media, I really can't see England passing the QF, and possibly even last 16. Looking forward to Landon, TC and Pienaar bigging it up for EFC. Have resigned myself to Pienaar going. Once SA are out of the tournament we should make our position clear and not wait for him. Sign or be sold. This next pre-season is CRITICAL. We cannot afford any shit this time; zero tolerance.

As for WC; Spain and Brazil to shine. Holland and Argentina not far behind. Dark horses USA (yes) and Ivory Coast. Slumdogs... France and, sadly, England.

BTW, I don't think it was wrong Jagielka wasn't picked. He wasn't exactly world-class upon his return from injury (he did well considering, but it was not the Jags we know and love).

Would you really have wanted Rodwell in the squad, to be tapped up and off to Utd or Co? Besides, he did well last season, but not enough for a place in a World Cup squad.

I'm gutted Anichebe hasn't gone tho. Thought it would have been great to see him at international level and to play 2/3 games on the trot, it could have really improved him.

Jon Cox, not sure you understood my point correctly.

I hate the national team and would love to see them fall at the first hurdle. Hence I am hoping Howard and Donovan play well. Not that I will be watching any England matches anyway. Life is too short. The arrogance of the England fans and team is disgusting.

We go into every major tournament expecting to win. No chance, the current England squad is probably the worst for over a decade.

As for being an Evertonian and cheering any team with Gerrard as captain well.... I simply can't even contemplate it.

Being Irish, I'm still feeling quite sick to the stomach after Henry's juggling. The injustice will linger long in Irish football, so much so that a lot of the country has switched off from the tournament before it's even started. Only now can we understand the anger felt by English fans after 1986 and Diego's divine intervention.

So I naturally predict Les Blues will not make it out of their pathetically easy group. England will crash at the quarters, the States will make it to the semis...

30   Posted 10/06/2010 at 08:51:52

I'd always supported England — I am English, and it's my national team after all. When I moved to London from Liverpool for a new job in the early 80s, I started watching England at Wembley and some away games (including Euro '92, Sweden... Graham Taylor, Carlton sodding Palmer!!) and never saw a reason why that would change.

But... Euro 2004, Rooney's cheerleaders in the Sky Press and the lovely Manc players like Rio, the self-professed Scouse hating Chuckle Brother engineering his move to OT, started to turn me off the national team. Allied with the whole Ingurlland tabloid hype, the scummy players — Stevie Me, Fat Frank, Cashley, 'JT', Rio The Merk and a host of others. Greedy dull Sven, Stcheeevev McLaren... I'd given up completely and took no interest in England's performances in the last few tournaments.

I really thought under Capello that things would improve. This time the hype has lessened, and the players are not the ones running the show but... same old, same old. The same bunch of over-hyped, over-rated players. I'll watch, hope it's a great tournament, but not arsed about England one way or the other any more — which is a shame as I think my national team has sort of been stolen from me.

Whatever... I know I'll get slated for it by some but it's how I feel. And for the World Cup, I know they have an ageing squad... but my money is on on Italy for the Semi-Final.

I actually feel more of an affinity to the Everton players in the USA team than I do to the England team at present. I sincerely hope that Howard plays a blinder and Landon Donovan gets the winner on Saturday.

Not that I am unpatriotic but I do feel our overpaid, egotistical, money gabbing shaggers like Terry and Cashley Cole need to be given a "bloody nose" early on in the tournament to make them realize that they are not there just to just pick up the money and the publicity but that they are there to do a job and represent the nation.

I am already pissed off about the amount of hype surrounding this mediocre and aging England team** — and the fuckin' wags that court the limelight. And our media are already making all the same old mistakes, building us up before a disappointing fall. And if I see Terry Venables doing his pub singer bit one more time I'm gonna kick the tele in ! So frigin crass.

** Oldest average age team in the tournament and also the oldest average age England team since 1966, I think.

Conor Waters #28 FFS don't start all that hand of God bollocks, in fact it was probably the incident that turned me against unqualified support of the national team. Henry & Maradonna scored or in the case of Henry assisted a goal unfairly. So what, get over it.

There are thousands of goals scored because the players have dived and won a penalty or even a free kick and a goal’s been scored, or a player’s jumped offside, or turned the defender and scored. It’s all part of football, some decisions go for you, some go against, but according to the British press Maradonna ranks up there with Hitler, Vlad the impaler, Jack the Ripper et al, and forget that he was the greatest footballer of his time and scored one of the all time great WC goals.

Oh BTW Conor, if I remember rightly, there was a French player in an offside position when they took the free kick, so you can be doubly pissed off.

Alasdair (17) has it spot on:
"I will be supporting England because I am English. I will be supporting Steven Gerard, because he plays for England. I am Everton first, England second, but Everton aren't playing in the World Cup."

The number of English club supporters (not just us I may add) who have this weird anti-England attitude is as disappointing as it is perplexing. I bet all you moaning types will be saying what a great team England is and what great support you gave should the admittedly highly unlikely England World Cup winners scenario come about!
Mike Allison
37   Posted 10/06/2010 at 11:19:46

"We go into every major tournament expecting to win. No chance, the current England squad is probably the worst for over a decade"

Just shows how perception can be different. I'd say the opposite. We go into every tournament with naysayers like you telling us we're just not good enough, our players aren't 'technical' and other countries are amazing, even though this is rarely the opinion in those other countries. I remember how Holland were going to teach us a lesson in football in Euro '96.

We go into every tournament with a decent chance of winning, and haven't managed to do it yet. Occasionally we've just not been good enough, and when we have been good enough, we get a man sent off, lose on penalties or go out to the eventual winners. It's often a combination of two of those factors.

The overwhelming negativity about England is people bottling out. They used to support the team in the past, in their younger, more innocent days, and now they find excuses not to because the team doesn't do as well as they'd like. I've used the word a few times, and I'll use it again because I mean it, it's pathetic.

Seriously? So cheating's okay as long as the referee makes a bad decision? Just get on with it? No, if there's an injustice it should be shouted from the rooftops, over and over and over again. History should record that whoever won, or achieved something, did so unfairly, everybody should know. Don't get over it.

Alasdair - 17 - exactly my sentiments. I couldn't care less who plays for England, as long as they play well. I support the team, which is bigger than any individuals in that team. Same goes for Everton.

Let's face it, if we sold everyone and bought Luton Town's squad to replace them, I'd support them too, because they'd be Everton.

If we'd signed Ronaldinho, Ferdinand, Ronaldo and Ashley Cole, we'd all have been doing somersaults, despite the fact that they're self-interested, big-headed, self-centred arseholes. I think the only people we'd struggle to support in the blue of Everton would be Gerrard, Bellamy, Robbie Savage and personally for me Lucas (what a dick he is).

Since you brought up '96, I can appreciate the team played well that year and were close. The current lot is nowhere near as good as that squad.

Michael, At the risk of sounding a "kiss arse", I think what makes this a great site is that you are not afraid to speak your mind.

Your "Apologists" post was classic TW.

With this, you have refused to jump aboard the "Englund" bandwagon. Keep saying it as you see it - it makes great reading and is very refreshing.

Fran Mitchell #26:

"BTW, I don't think it was wrong Jagielka wasn't picked. He wasn't exactly world-class...."

And Carragher is? Also Jagielka is more versatile because he can play as leftback or rightback as cover if needed.

I watched the Uruguay v the fucking French cheaters tonight and saw that skinned head fucking cunt screaming for a hand ball penalty. Went into a rage.

Now for England, would be a nice team to watch but we and the whole world still have to put up with 1966. For Jayz sake drop it — that happened 44 years ago. Ye truly have some very gifted footballers but my tip will win the World Cup — Argentina.

I dont get any of this. Just because Donovan helped us out when we were struggling for players, are you guys really going to suport an American team against England?

I was gutted when the Irish and the Scots went out of the qualifiers, but listening to them and the Welsh this week makes me pleased they all failed to qualify.

The World Cup is something aside from the tribalism of the EPL and I want Gerrard and Rooney to show the world that this city (OUR city) can, has and will continue to produce world class players.

England must be the only country in the world that has a significent number of its people actually wanting them to lose.
