Are you a middle man...

By Martin Graves :  06/11/2009 :  Comments (4) :
I have to admit, I’ve never been one of these people to offer Moyes the praise he often receives, but likewise I’ve never been one to hurl the insults I often read and hear. I was more of a middle man, weighing up both sides of the argument. ‘WAS’ being the key word….

For every heaviest Premier League defeat at home, for every biggest defeat in Europe, for every transfer record broken on unproven talent, lowest points in the Premier League, lowest finish etc, I could weigh it against biggest win in Europe, joint best victory in the Premier League, massive transfer fees raked in for over-rated players, highest points and highest Premier League finish.

This season, I truly believed that we could go the next step, even after the defeat to Arsenal, irrespective of the injuries, irrespective of the Lescott sale. You get my point…However, what we as fans have witnessed this season, if I’m honest, has been pure and utter dross. It’s no surprise we have falling attendance figures. I gave Moyes the benefit of the doubt the first few games, but now I’m at the end of my tether (whatever that is!).

Take Thursday night’s game against Benfica, a game we needed to win. A game that mattered little if we lost 4-0 instead of 1-0. It a game where we started with Cahill, Fellaini, Rodwell and the Yak. "Thank Christ," I thought, "Rodders in front of the back 4, and 1 of the other 2 playing as another striker in the deep." But how wrong I was – Cahill sat in front of the back 4 with Rodders and Felli (who was my MOM), played in the middle – this was just ludicrous – nothing short of a stupid decision by the manager.

Moyes has persisted with this stupid 4-5-1 formation for too long – it’s clear it doesn’t work anymore for Everton; his tactics have been found out. Benfica came and sat back, a much better and organised outfit, and almost embarrassed us.

Am I the only one who remembers playing 3 up front against Fiorentina, when the Italians bottled it and Goodison was in full roar?? That doesn’t happen anymore – how quiet was Goodison on Thursday? What’s happened to the old lady?

I point the finger squarely at Moyes himself. Start with two up front – he has his faults but why sign Jo and not play him? Give the young lad Agard a chance? No – he waited until as always after 70 minutes and made his sub – what chance have we got then?

Anyway – pretty much my rant over after being so disappointed, but suffice to say, I’m no longer a middle man, I know who I’m pointing the finger of blame at this season…

Martin, don’t you realise the reason we are shite, is because we have loads of injuries, everyone has more money than us, Moyes is a messiah, and it is never his fault.

So to sum up, Moyeses has good episodes and his bad ones. These to me, cancel each other out. So you are left with amid point, an average, which half confirms one of my long held theories ( don’t you like it when that ’ appears ’ to happen ) eg all we have had from Moyes has been a run of 50% seasons, 04-05 being the classic. how many poor starts? better middles and fade outs.

Is this the season when we fail to over achieve??

I think Tony Cascarino might have the right of it... not that it helps us if he does do a runner, unless BK gets lucky with the replacement.

Fellaini, MOM? Were you watching the same game as me. He made Osam look good the other night. His passing is shite, his control is shite, and he’s clumsy on the ball. One of Moye’s panic buys.

Gosling was shite too. I hope he develop’s into a decent premier league player but I really can’t see it. He can only live off THAT goal for so long.

Rodwell is SHEER class. Billy will be a great player in time, his passing last night at times was fant astic and at least Cahill works his bollocks off every game.
