Hope Springs Eternal

Comments (6)

Last night Everton retained their Milk Cup junior title.

Now, I'd be the first one to have a go at people for overhyping youngsters... but the stand-out player from last night's game was the same stand-out player from last year's tournament as well. A young striker called Hallam Hope. Last year he scored a hat-trick in the final and this year he got two... he also seems to have bulked up quite a bit from last year as well.

Certainly one to keep an eye on for the future...

Yes, Everton are Milk Cup Junior Section Winners. The lad Hope looks a good prospect.

There's action from the semi-final on this link

From the BBC highlights Anton Forrester also looked good. He’s a tall attacking midfielder who looked good on the ball.

Too early to get very excited but winning this tournamnet, against some English and foreign sides, is a good indecation of the quality of the youth side.

That Hope lad looks like Vaughan as well; I hope he is just as good but a lot less fragile.

I found out about this Hope kid about 18 months ago. He’s from Manchester and is from a family of big Man U fans. He turned down the chance to play for Man U, City and Liverpool to join Everton. Apparently one of the factors for joining Everton was the new facilities and the chance to train alongside the first team. He also feels he’ll get more of an opportunity to make it into the first team at Everton than at the other clubs. I just hope his head doesn’t get turned too early by the riches on off from the Manchester clubs.

There are three minutes of highlights on the BBC iPlayer:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00lyc3l/Milk_Cup_2009_31_07_2009/

It starts around 59:30 and around a minute after the highlights there is an interview with the Everton coach Sean Lundon.

He does look a cut above his peers and is a goal machine, appears ice cool in front of goal scores at whatever level he plays at. Crucially he seems to be filling out a bit which will help him adjust to the physical side. If he steers clear of injury and keeps his head then I think Hope will be a fabulous player.
