The news that Lescott was out of the side to play at Coventry today due to a hip injury came as no surprise.

I don't see it as a coincidence or a real injury and would suggest that he has either handed in his transfer request or Everton have accepted an improved bid (or both) and Lescott has left to go and sort his personal terms out.

I totally agree with Moyes on this one and he is right to speak out in today's papers about the lack of professionalism and respect both he and our Club have been afforded by Sitteh. Never any class that shower and never will have.

At least the saga can now reach the end game and we can use the money to buy a few decent additions to the squad. For one, I like the looks of Senderos, who would be a great squad player and not a bad stand in for Jags in the short term.

Au Revoir Joleon, you are a top class centre half and the number of poor games you had in a Blue shirt I could count on one hand.

Personally I believe you will regret the move both short and long term. City are bound for seasons of upheaval and change with players and managers leaving on a regular basis as the owners become frustrated that their millions haven't bought the success they assumed would follow. Still, you can at least glance at your latest bank statement for comfort.

The official word is that Lescott is at Finch Farm this morning receiving treatment. This is probably true — but, of course, doesn’t mean that he won’t go to Middle Eastlands.

Come on mate. Conspiratory theories are all very well but let's take it at face value until we know any differently.

Don’t claim a player has been signed until you see the player holding a shirt — works for incoming and outgoing players.

I don’t know, Robert. I’m not someone who normal buys into these ’conspiracy theories’ and I also had a funny feeling Lescott might stay. However, with him not being at the match today, coupled with Moyes's comments in the national press this morning, it looks very ominous.

Have you boys seen City are snooping around Elm now, as well as Delph? I guess we can write them two off.

One thing that makes me laugh of our specualtion is we belive any bad news: Lescott never played so he is definitely leaving but any good possible rumours, such as a player is signing, and he won't be coming and we don't beleive it.

Richard, sadly we don’t have any cash until outgoing transfers are completed, or the Sky money is in. Otherwise the likes of Elm and Delph could’ve been snapped up.

Now with the intensity of the media scrutiny (and as much as some of us claim to hate it, everyone thrives on it), Moyes can’t keep cats in bags with greedy agents and greedy clubs, so we have to face up to the fact that, until new investment comes in (straight face) we’ll be shopping at the bin-ends for the foreseeable.

I’m a big fan of young Jack's but, on today's evidence, he ain't ready to play centre-half just yet. If a deal has been struck for Lescott, we need a replacement now.

Yes Dave — word for word, exactly right.

Matt, while I appreciate what you’re saying, it’s not accurate.

We’ve definitely made a bid in the region of £5-6 million for Naughton and, whether or not you believe the Liege chairman, a substantial bid for Defour.

I’m not saying we’ve got a big transfer kitty, but there’s certainly enough to entertain the purchases of the Elms and Delphs of the world without selling anyone; well, before City got involved anyway.

According to that well known source of truth, Sky Sports, Man City have entered the race to sign Elm and Delph. Has Hughes decided to do a Redknapp and wait until we bid for a player then gazump us for them? Plus, if it's true, will we ever get the chance to sign a player? It's getting a bit ridiculous.
John Martin
10   Posted 02/08/2009 at 17:59:21

The only thing ridiculous about other clubs coming in for players we have shown an interest in is the amount of time we take to move for them and therefore allowing others to come in. It's over two weeks since we showed Elm around Finch Farm and yet nothing has happened. We will only have ourselves to blame if he is indeed a player we want and he goes elsewhere. Look at Owen's transfer to United — it happened quickly, even for a player with his injury problems. If that was us, he’d still be undergoing a medical.
John Martin

As for Lescott, the press seem to believe, just because he hands in a transfer request, this means we will have to accept £22 million. If Everton value him higher, we should hold out. If he sulks through next season he’ll be the loser of his World Cup place.
Tom Bowers

The rumours are swirling good style but newspaper talk is just that. Are the injuries starting again before the season starts or do the absentees mean something else?

Personally I think the big guns have more power and I believe that Joleon will go now. We need the cash and it would be a very profitable deal. Of course having money to spend will set the tabloids off again about many players we will sign but these will just be false as so many have proved to be in the past. When a move happens, believe it... but not till then.

I’m with you John Martin. If we don’t want to sell we don’t have to. Lescott sulks and/or plays badly because he’s disinterested and loses out on a World Cup Squad place. At worst we keep him until January and get £35m for him!
Iain Smith

Hi, I’m new on here but just wanted to give my £22 millions worth! If we do accept a bid, which I think we may have, what on earth makes Man City so arrogant that they think another big team may not come in too? Personally I would rather Lescott went to Arsenal, Chelsea, even Real Madrid rather than City.
Craig Taylor
15   Posted 02/08/2009 at 19:55:15

Iain, new but sensible which you will learn isn’t always the case (wonder where I fit in?); anyway I like your style.

If Lescott does put in a tranfer request I think Moyes should knock on the Chelsea/Arsenal/Man Utd/top teams in Europe and offer Lescott to them. Brilliant. Because these guys can match the wage reported, and offer Lescott an improved level of football in the Champions League as opposed to a drop with no Euro football at all.

I would like to stress that I would like Lescott to stay.
Matt Traynor

Richard, My supposition (and that’s all it is) is that we actually don’t have the money. We can make offers for players, based on the knowledge that we have some money, and more to come in. Naughton's & Elm’s clubs could well accept those offers, but the deals can’t be completed until the money is in place.

Where the cashed-up clubs are making it tougher for us is that, as well as inflating fees and wages, they are changing the way deals used to be done. Percentage up front, balance over a period of time, or life of players contract. These guys can drop the cash off in one go — always a more attractive option, as anyone will tell you — cash is king in business.

I mean, we got fucked over on the Michael Ball to Rangers deal years ago. Soft-arse Everton just waived the balance owed. We really are fucking mugs sometimes.

Do you think if it’d been us rather than Sheff U that’d gone down over the "Tevez" affair the club would’ve kicked up the fuss Sheff U did? I don’t think we would’ve done. Hypothetical I know!

This week is the week we will see some movement. I personally think that JoLo will go. Shame I know but move on; replacement required, Senderos and Yobo as central back line... Jesus, we will be shitting ourselves everytime the ball comes towards them.
Think Dunne is better than Senderos, but both moves are backwards. The guy from Hull... err no; and for £8 million, Robert Huth from Boro quoted £3 million and Moyes was in for him before he went to Boro? So it looks as if we are playing CM to fill this position.

With regard to Rastus, there has been no bid as yet, City interested? No, I don't think so, agents to push the price up.

And Delph... I think Gosling has more promise.

Myself, Miguel at right back for the same money as Alan Hutton; Joe Mattock for cover at left back; Bassong from Newcastle as center back; Adam Johnson from Boro for the right wing and the big one Daffour from Leige.

With JLo’s transfer money and the TV right money and if there is any change Joe Ledley or Seb Larsson.

Just as a tangent, I thought Coloccini from Newcastle — you can't become shit overnight; hasn't he got 20 caps for Argentina?

Hope springs eternal and this week it will.

Sorry missed off a point from my post (above Peter’s).

My supposition is my way of rationalising why we can’t close out these deals. I suspect it’s because we do not have 100% of the fee in place yet, and now clubs are pretty much wanting all up front.
Peter Griffin
19   Posted 03/08/2009 at 09:37:27

I think up to now Moyes has identified targets for the summer and has a bit of money to possibly get 1 or 2 in now, but then wait until the Sky money clears and we get 1 or 2 more.

Owen would have been a free apart from a signing fee.

Naughton would have been about £5 million and not all up front (unlike Spurs).

Elm and Delph: similar deals to Naughton. It seems Elm is waiting to see what clubs come in and Leeds are trying to start a bidding war for Delph to get as much as they can. I don’t think City are seriously intersted in these players and are just trying to make a point to us over the Lescott deal.

I think it’s going to be these kind of players plus maybe a Bosman rather than a big transfer like Fellaini.
Alan Clarke
20   Posted 03/08/2009 at 10:10:55

Why haven’t we brought in the Bosmans already then? Most contracts run until end of July so anyone available on a free should be snapped up by now. Most decent players will agree to join a club before their current contract expires so, IF we end up buying anyone at all this summer, I expect we will have to part with some money for them.

Lescott could put an end to this soap opera by stating publically that he is staying here at Everton. If, as one Sunday paper suggested, that he is on (just) £30k a week then maybe as a good will gesture Moyes and the back room boys could up this a little to say £40k or even £50k as a good will gesture for publicly committing to us and thus abiding by that strange thing called a contract.

That brings me nicely onto my next point — what the fuck is a contract for if a player can just ignore it when/if he wants to leave? Once upon a time all the power in football was (wrongly) with the club (£20 a week max wage and all that), but now the power has clearly shifted too far the other way where players can “demand” a transfer regardless of what that little piece of paper called a contact states.

Moyes should stand firm over this issue weather Jlo wants to leave or not. Stand firm and send a message out to Shitty and any other club in the same financial bracket that clubs like Everton, Villa and the likes are not going to be steam-rollered by some trash with cash.

I agree with some of the other comments here that if Moyes stands firm and Lescott sulks then it is he who would suffer most as his chances of getting into the World Cup squad would just evaporate. I can’t believe that Jlo would be so stupid.
Chad Schofield
22   Posted 03/08/2009 at 13:58:52

Matthew,

Why would Lescott be so stupid as to come out and publicly knock Man City? They are potential employers who are offering him twice the money he’s on and, if doesn’t request a transfer from us, a nice slice of the transfer fee.

I fully agree with Ian Smith that if Lescott puts in a transfer request, then we should try and entice anyone and everyone to bid as Man City haven’t shown themselves in a good light at all this summer. Ideally we’d accept an offer, Lescott would go and sort personal terms and reject them - OK, wishful thinking, and we’d probably have already spent the money!

Expecting a player to come out and state he’s not interested in a double-your-money-deal though is bizarre. Often more intelligent players often come out and say something along the lines of "I’m currently play for X, and until X say differently I’m an X player" but frankly that normally is just before Y come in and bid for them and a week later they’re in the press saying how excited they’ve been about coming and what a wonder opportunity it is to play for Y... up until Z come in a few years later.

I’d prefer it if he stayed until after the World Cup, but he might have a nightmare or get injured out there or before reducing his value — but you run the risk of that with any player.
Matthew Mackey
23   Posted 03/08/2009 at 15:40:22

Chad, Nobody is saying that Lescott should be so stupid as to publicly knock Man City. (Nowhere in my previous comment have I said that.) I am saying that if his intention is to stay with us then he should publicly say so.

If John Terry of Chelsea can do that (last week) when faced with a similar dilemma, then why can’t Lescott?

By not saying anything at all is just encouraging the TRASH WITH CASH to keep applying the pressure on himself and Moyes.

OK, I accept that Lescott is probably not in the same wage band as John Terry but don’t you think there should be more to a footballers life than just earning obscene amounts of the stuff? What about loyalty? What about commitment? What about honouring ones contract? Even on Everton’s poultry £30k a week I’m sure he can pay his leccy, gas and council tax.

There are no guarantees to shitty’s success this season. Upping sticks now, just 12 months before the World Cup is, in my opinion, a risky move which could seriously backfire for the lad. Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t!
John Martin
24   Posted 03/08/2009 at 19:21:18

Lescott is a totally different scenario to John Terry. Terry is earning fantastic wages at a club that is challenging for honours and are still prepared to spend money. We have no money, are paying far less wages and will almost certainly not win anything next season.

It's easy to be loyal when you're playing for a team in the top 3 that pays well. For Lescott, he’ll never earn at Everton what he can elswhere and he is seeing them do all they can to attract players while we do nothing in the transfer market again. 99% of footballers are not loyal to their employers, just as in any sector. I’d be off like a shot if anyone was stupid enough to treble my wages. If we’d show some ambition and get some investment, we wouldn't be having this situation; Lescott would want to stay.

John Martin
25   Posted 03/08/2009 at 19:25:45

I’m with Alan Clarke in wondering, if Moyes wants to sign up Bosman type signings, why hasnt he already? July 1st most players' contracts run out. Our squad is painfully thin on the ground suffering from injuries the latest being Fellaini who is a doubt for the Arsenal game. Yet we have had 5 weeks since July 1st to beef up our squad with Bosmans or loans and, just like last year, we have not. Sean Davis is one player who would have been a decent squad filler.

Whatever is going on behind the scenes is a joke and I can't beleive Moyes is happy with current squad level. If he isn't, why on earth have we not got players in on loan??? Top European teams have huge squads and are often looking to farm out players. Why can't we ever get a player from Real or Barca or Milan as the likes of West Ham have in the past?

Alan Clarke
26   Posted 03/08/2009 at 20:17:21

Matthew, as depressing as it is, the contract is not there to insist that he continues playing for us, it is there to say to any potential buyers you have to pay us a shit load of cash if you want him.
Chad Schofield
27   Posted 03/08/2009 at 20:49:24

But Terry was on a reported £130-135k a week. He is now on £151,000 per week... he did not just come out and refuse Man City because he’s "Chelsea through and through".

If Lescott stays, and it’s a big if, then it’s likely that he may get some kind of financial reward. I just think that people should lay off him until he has gone. Maybe he’s a massive Evertonian and can see that £20M+ is a substatial amount for our club... and given Villa have just had a bid accepted for Delph such a some might give us an opportunity to compete for players rather than offering Kenwright IOUs
Stewart Littler
28   Posted 04/08/2009 at 01:21:35

If we’d have signed any Bosmans already, we’d already be paying their wages. Since the squad was already on it’s way off round the globe before anything could be put in place, it kinda makes sense to wait and save the money — I know it’s not ideal, but we don’t live in that world, we live in the realistic one.

And regarding the players we’ve supposedly (in some cases) gone for: suppose you’re the manager, and you’ve got a limited budget to play with (anywhere from nought to maybe (optimistically) £15M) — would you spend £10M of that on two youngsters from the Championship? £8M on a League 1 midfielder? £6M on a nutjob defensive midfielder? We all know Moyes doesn’t take risks that severe, and in fairness, it works for him. As for Elm, is a player costing £3M really good enough to take us forward?

Many Evertonians are questioning whether we can continue ’punching above our weight’. They are comparing the start of this season to last year, and I don’t deny there are similarities. However, may I put forward the flip side of the coin — there is no contract issue (quite obviously a major factor in our poor start last season); we are continuing to involve our youngsters, who will be hungrier than any M’Bia to impress; and our first choice 11 for the first couple of months of the season is the same one that finished last season so strongly and got us to the Cup Final.

Add to that that (with the exception of the opening fixture), we have a fairly kind fixture list until that tough looking run in November, when we will have the 4 injured players back, plus any additions integrated into the side, and I doubt we will see the same kind of start to the season we saw last year. Our first 9 league games saw us take 17 points in the corresponding fixtures last season (swapping Burnley and Wolves for West Brom and Newcastle), and I see no reason why we can’t top that?

Many people have pointed out that our right side is the weakest part of the team, which is indeed true, but even some of Hibbo and Osman’s harshest critics have had to concede that they do the business against lesser teams (ie, Fulham away re Osman) and I think Burnley, Fulham, Wigan, Blackburn, Portsmouth, Stoke, Wolves & Bolton are all in this bracket. Personally, I don’t see why with a bit of luck, and highly dependent on the Arsenal game, we can’t win all 8 of those fixtures?

Kenwright has confirmed we are in discussions with Arsenal over the signing of Senderos. (Echo online)

Also, both The Daily Post and The Echo are running stories that Lescott has verbally told Moyes he wants to leave but has been told, no chance.

It would seem, as expected, that only a written transfer request and an increased bid from City will possibly pave the way for Lescott moving.

If you were Moyes, what would you do if you received a £22m offer for a player who clearly no longer wants to play for you? ( I’m purposely excluding Kenwright from this equation as such a question would be rhetorical.)

Also, about Senderos, what do we know of his qualities? He’s played over 100 times for Arsenal so one could assume he isn’t as bad as say, Kroldrup. Equally, one could also assume he isn’t as good as Lescott, or surely Mr. ’Granite Jaw’ Hughes would be waving silly money at Arsenal rather than at us.
