Joey Barton, again

Comments (42)

So, less than two weeks to the start of the season and as expected no really new signings. Someone (I think it was Dave Wilson, apologies if I'm wrong Dave) said that there were rumours that Joey Barton was on his way. How would most Evertonians feel about that?

My own view is based on entirely football reasons. Joey Barton has been a thug in the past, maybe he will never change. He might, though, and David Moyes is the man to help him if he wants to, Phil Neville would help too.

However, I actually don't rate him as a player and I think he would actually turn some Evertonians away. I'd like to raise the question, who would forgive him his past if we got him for free?

No, no, no, no , no.

No.

Not ever.

No.

1. We wouldn’t be Everton if we signed him, we have class.

2. He’s not good enough to get in our team.

The Poison Fruit... Never! Would rather have Andy VD Meyde back... on a higher salary!

After 2 shit summers in the transfer market that would be the ultimate slap in the face.

Discipline aside, he isn’t good enough for our ambitions!

As a free transfer on a pay-as-you-play contract with early termination clause at the first sign of trouble, I would take him.

He cant be any worse than ’Saint Duncan’ can he?

Not even as a bouncer on permanent loan to the Winslow.

Unless there's a better reason than "someone else may or may not have heard a rumour", then what's the point of raising this again?

Just revisit some of the old threads where this has been discussed to death!

I would welcome him as long as we get a good deal and its on EFC terms. He has made mistakes like many others but his only wish is to play for EFC and that has to be worth the chance, as i say above if he fails then we will have an exit clause to use, or maybe even a loan deal with Joey. Stevie G did the same as Joey but for some strange reason got away with it, seems his legal team must have taken lessons from OJ Simpson!! His half brothers ations are not his so dont blame or even associate with that. it the deal is right then both parties have all to gain on this if it doesnt JB will lose his dream, money cant buy that back. Mike, not being funny mate, but you can’t compare Gerrard to Barton. What Gerrard did was bang out of order, and he shouldn’t have got away with it. But Barton has got a list as long as your arm when it comes to being a tit.

You really want to upset the team spirit by letting that cretin join Everton? That IS the day I stop being a supporter.

Patty get yourself prepared then, just over a week ago, a senior member of our backroom staff told a friend of mine Moyes was seriously considering it.

Haha...Joey the thug Barton..

An unfortunate young man in my opinion...who’s been hyped out of all proportion.

Lets look at the incidents...a drunken brawl..two fights with team-mates..stubbing a cigar out in a players face...and slabbering at a young evertonian..

To be honest the only one I would not be inclined to forgive is the cigar incident. Everyone makes mistakes..and he’s clearly got a temper...but he’s hardly the devil.

Patty won’t be the only one, Paul. Barton is an absolute git, I’d love to see Kenwright waxing lyrical about that signing. Temper? I’ve watched him train up in Durham along with the rest of the Newcastle team on many occasions a few years back, and he was an obnoxious turd even in training, every single session. Plus he would have done more than slap that young evertonian if Dunny hadn’t pulled him away. There’s lovable loonys like Graveson and Ferguson, but there’s nothing loveable about JB.

If we’are so desperate to be being linked with Barton again then we really are in trouble.
FFS.. How low can we go ? I’ve heard Bristol city want rid of Lee Trundle, perhaps we’ll be linked with him next !!!

On a more positive note but please be aware I just got this from a friend in Catalonia & have NOT yet checked this out.
She reckon’s Manny Fernades has got himself arrested & spent the night in the cells.
Apparently the Valencia coach Koemans has told the club to get rid & he is being offered to Everton first.
Apparently this is on Valencia fan sites.
Like I say treat with caution until checked out but as BB would say WATCH THIS SPACE

I would prefer not wasting my time with Barton but at the end of the day we are not in that position.

The guy has talent, he was on the verge on the England squad at one stage and that’s WITHOUT playing for Everton or a Sky 4 club.

For FREE or pay as you play and to be able to rid as we please.. It’s just a no brainer

Get him in, stick him in the rezzies and if he looks half sharp give him a chance.

I can’t find anything current on any sites so this is either probably very old news or a wind-up/complete bullshit !! So best to completely write off that one as complete bollocks.

Patty, you might want to reconsider; I’m sure I’ve read you're a scouser now based in Wales (forgive me if I’m wrong). You’ll know what this city is like for rumours, they are usually pinch-of-salt jobs, but this is a bit different, the dogs in the street are barking it now.

I’ll be amazed if Barton does not become a blue in the near future... whether we like it or not.

The way things are shaping i’d be happy to see Pol Pot sign for us.....

Ok i may have lied then but ffs let’s bring some bodies in. For all those moaning about Senderos, if we get him for a few mill then what is the problem? He’s played over 100 times for Arsenal so he can’t be THAT bad. I’m sure Moyes will help iron out some of his faults.

As for Barton, the only way i’d be comfortable with him at Everton would be if he got his head down, kept his mouth shut and played to something like the early potential he had in his career at City.

I don’t condone anything he has done, but supposing we got him on a free then it would be worth the gamble as we are so thread bare in terms of available numbers just now it’s frightening.

I think we can gladly put this down to either more lazy reporting or a tenous rumour!
I recall a fan piece where the guy was travelling back from Ireland on the same flight as the team after a pre-season friendly. Barton was still at City and during a chat with David Moyes about players/transfers etc, Davey commented he was too much trouble and he wouldn’t go near him. I remember thinking at the time that Davey came across a bit old school and with a touch of class. As to the validity of this, who knows, but it kind of rings true when you think of Moyes’ personality...
Patty Beesley
19   Posted 05/08/2009 at 12:11:08

Hey Paul, surely you’re having a laugh !!! Can you really see it... no way would Moysie tolerate the sort of thuggish behaviour that Barton is capable of and I am sure he doesn’t fancy a cigar in the eye etc. at the Christms party.

I believe in giving people a chance to make amends but I am afraid, in Barton’s case, I honestly believe that a leopard doesn’t change his spots or sports !!!

I’m not knocking Moyes, but i still struggle to find the reasons why he signed his new contract if he knew this summer would be exactly the same as last. ( and if he didn’t and was led to believe things would be different, why is he still here? )

I don’t begrudge him the contract, but if we are to assume he is all about integrity, then why agree to continue treading water in terms of financial backing when it was apparent that this was a major stumbling block in him signing it in the first place? If nothing has changed, and that does appear to be the case, what are his motives?

Money? Or are we now just the stepping stone along the way to Utd? Again, i’m not having a pop at him, just curious what other blues feel.

And before anyone jumps down my throat, think back to last summer and how dejected Moyes was. ( rightly so ). Yet fast forward 12months, and he seems far less stressed even though it appears we are again doing everything ( if anything ) last minute. Then take into account we still have our 3 most influential players sidelined through injury. Anyone else feel something isn’t right?

Marc Williams ....Living in Carmarthen and obviously close to the Swansea AFC scene, I would have you know that Lee Trundle is a great guy, totally dedicated to supporting Everton and would have given anything a few years back to have been given a trial by Moysie. Please don’t link him with the likes of Barton.

No way. If there is any truth in this rumour then the Club should come clean.

I’ll say it again if Barton plays for Everton then my Season Ticket gets sent back to BK.

We have a group of players that play for each other and we do not read any bad news on them. With Barton that would change. No No No !!!!

There was never anything in the press about this rumour, it was Dave Wilson who mentioned it whilst tearing into Alan Kirwin in another thread. Dave had said it was a rumour doing the rounds in Liverpool, that was all.

I fully suspect it was some RS up to mischief in Dave’s pub. So if anyone’s going for a drink this week and come across any RS, tell them Barton is going to sign for them as a cheap replacement for Alonso. It’s the fat Spanish Waiter’s only option as the money from Alonso is only going to service their massive debt!

Alan

I wasnt tearing into Boris at the time, he entered he discusion with his usual insults ignorance later.

I hate "press reports" and "rumour" they annoy me and I dont usually get involved. but this is different, not prepared to say why, but I know that it will take a real change of heart at GP - or cold feet - to stop Barton becoming a blue.

As penance for listening to Rumour - no matter how strong - I will happily donate a fiver to a charity of your choice, if Barton hasnt signed by the time the season kicks off..

Moysie would not take Barton on.

Joey "Jailbird" Barton. I used to think he was a decent player but a move to The Skunks would be enough to make any decent player look like a load of tosh. I wouldn’t mind Moyes taking a punt on him if there was something in his contract stipulating he would be booted out the first sign of "criminal" behaviour.

He is a lucky scumbag, like most footballers but hopefully with age he would learn to respect his talent and position.........but I very much doubt it

Sorry Dave that’s just my memory from that afternoon, your comments about Kirwin’s Wigan report had made me laugh.

I’m astounded by the Barton link though and your posts are the only place I’ve read it. If it’s true then I hope we are totally skint and can’t afford anyone then. I’d rather we just stuck with what we had and give a kid a chance or even just play with 10 men than take any sort of a gamble with that horrid shitbag.

He used to be a good player for City, and a great prospect, before all the crap he’s done now.

This article’s ridiculous, I’m sorry, I will never want to see him in an Everton shirt!!

LOL Patty

yes a fiver does sound a bit stingy when you put it like that.
I was trying to explain to Alan that I think there’s more to it than just Rumour, and the pearly diver was merely a gesture to say I will accept a penalty if this proves to be yet another time waster.
Contrary to what Michael Kenrick believes, I don’t think I know everything and if I had to forfeit a fiver every time I was wrong I would be roaming the streets starving.
Sorry, if I’m wrong I intend to honour this, so a fiver it is

@ Lionel Luther
The question you raise concerning Moyes and his motives is interesting and highly pertinent, I believe. I’m an avid supporter of Moyes but, I really want to hear his comments on this Lescott sale should it proceed.
Regarding Barton or should it be disregarding Barton? I believe everyone deserves a second chance should they err, whether it be in football or life in general. However, Barton has spurned several oppurtunities to put his errant ways behind him and one is left with the impression that in his case he’s beyond redemption.
It’s a shame for us and him but as technically and physically proficient he maybe as a player, it’s obvious that he’s not mentally or emotionally equipped to control himself on or off the park. Moyes would be daft to bring Barton back to Liverpool and all the attendant pressures locally born players in the city have to face. It would be like waiting for a bomb to go off.
Besides any skewed, fraternal feeling I had for Barton completely evaporated last year when he dropped his shorts to the Park End. Alright, I know they were giving him the bird but in an instant, for me, he forfeited the right to ever wear our colours. He proved with that gesture he’s not big enough or good enough for the shirt. Hope this one dies a death, quickly!
