Lescott hands in transfer request
Comments (139)
So it's official now, Lescott has had a official transfer request rejected by Moyes. In my opinion, you should never keep a player who doesn't want to play for the club as it could have a bad effect on team morale.

Hmm, wonder where they got the info from because it doesn't go into much detail.

So Michael Turner anyone?
6 Posted 11/08/2009 at 11:57:07
We can’t have one of our own booed during a match... that’s suicide.
He needs to go, and quick, so we can replace him...
I guess the only question left... is how much will Kenwright give Moyes... or how much will he be allowed to give Moyes!
7 Posted 11/08/2009 at 11:59:04
Surely DM isn’t so single-minded to actually keep him? Stranger things have happened... for me though, he has to go.
8 Posted 11/08/2009 at 12:02:54
Football this season has just taken a bigger leap towards the dark side. Lets Not follow this route.
Bring on Senderos (OH god we are fucked).
IMWT
But for how much longer can we!!

10 Posted 11/08/2009 at 12:22:41
I hope his request sparks a bidding war and as the price goes sky high and Lescott opts for one of Man U, Chelsea or Arsenal.
Leaving Citeh in the shitter!
11 Posted 11/08/2009 at 12:25:21
Stop calling him a ’tosser’ — it’s ridiculously childish.
He’s an employee who is entitled to do what he did. Maybe he’d had enough of Moyes refusal to entertain him leaving... if it’s true that Lescott had already made an informal request — then he clearly did the right thing at that stage — but was still being undermined by Moyes’s principles on the matter.
You’ve also got to ask why the club released this information... especially if they were refusing out of hand. It now means he can’t play Saturday.

As a team, what EFC has lacked in quality in recent seasons has compensated by excellent morale and this can only be damaged by keeping a player around who no longer is motivated to the cause.
I can only assume that Moyes' transfer refusal is one last effort to eek some more money out of City for hopefully the good of team re-building in general.
I don't harbour any ill-feeling towards Lescott. Anyone else would move to double their pay for the same job. Let's get this business now done quickly so we can move on and rebuild quickly. Having a disenchanted player skulking around, whether it be in the first team or reserves is no good for anyone.
16 Posted 11/08/2009 at 08:21:02
Do you think moyes should just accept his request as obviously he does not want to play for us? Or keep him at Everton knowing that he doesn't really want to play for us and I can't see him getting such a good reception if he's still here for his next home game?
17 Posted 11/08/2009 at 08:29:00
I know we have just rejected his transfer request, but its just a matter of time till he leaves now, I cannot see the fans ever cheering his name again.
Let's get £30m, sign a winger, RB and CB cover for Jags
18 Posted 11/08/2009 at 08:30:17
Now obviously influenced by the likes of other Man City players, Barry, Bridge & Wright-Phillips probably telling him how great it is there now with all these players. Apart from money Man City have got nothing going for them, They are not even in Europe and if Lescot wants to stay in the England squad as Capello said to Terry he needs to pitting his skills against European opposition. People forget, like Chelsea that Man City were in the lower divisions not that long ago, even to the point of being in Division One. They don't even own the stadium
I think Everton & Moyes have to bite the bullet and get the most they can out of Man City and let the coward Lescott go.
I really do hope Man City fail and go the way of Newcastle but that is never going to happen but I can see Mark Hughes gone by the end of the year when they do not perform.
19 Posted 11/08/2009 at 13:18:11
Most modern footballers don’t know what that means.
20 Posted 11/08/2009 at 13:16:44
I think Moyes has not boxed clever and has let his heart rule his head the whole way through this situation..Lescott was clearly forced to play his official hand...
Now we must get rid of him...The irrational hatred and bile already overflowing from the numbskulls on the official forum and other sites- means that he can never take to the pitch for us again..
And the procrastination has left us with days to find a replacement...considering it usually takes us months..I’m not confident of anything happening this week...that’s assuming Moyes now drops his pointless hard-nose routine.
21 Posted 11/08/2009 at 08:26:16
22 Posted 11/08/2009 at 13:19:42
As you say get 30m and sign a RB, CB and midfielder. However, I forgot this is Everton so doubt anyone will be signed before deadline day.
23 Posted 11/08/2009 at 08:57:37
Now before people start saying, oh you would move to a new company for double your wages doing the same job? Yes i would!! only because I get 400 pound per week not 30 to 40 fucking grand a week!!! I mean no matter where Lescott plays his football, he will have a comfortable life, and will never have to work again after his playing days are over.
After such a glowing and a loving show of admiration Lescott recieved at Goodison on Friday, how the fuck can he leave the club after that? Or even have the fucking balls to hand in a transfer request? No balls either, he waits 'til he's off with the England squad!!!!
Remember Lescott we are the ones who made you!! My advice to you Lescott is piss off, take the money, and don't come back to Goodison, you useless so and so.
24 Posted 11/08/2009 at 09:09:51
25 Posted 11/08/2009 at 13:23:22
We’d need a RB, CB, LB, CM and right-winger/midfielder... Tough ask for 20 or 30 million!
26 Posted 11/08/2009 at 13:19:50
If we sold him last month it might have given us enough time (but knowing Everton, probably not!) to get some players in and get them working to our defensive tactics, etc. He has to stay, at least until January...
27 Posted 11/08/2009 at 13:22:20
28 Posted 11/08/2009 at 09:10:17
I am not saying that none of us wouldn't turn our head at what the arab state of Man City are offering but what about loyalty, the team spirit, that we have at Everton? Sorry this sounds like rambling but I have 2 questions to pose:
1: - How much influence has his agents had?
2: - How low he waits until he is away from the club on international duty to put in the request. I wonder how angry DM is? And what influence have the players in the England had on him?
I hope that he see's the error of his ways and stays but I don't think so. But if he does go, I hope he falls flat on his overpaid ass!
29 Posted 11/08/2009 at 09:45:23
It's a shame that footballers' contracts are not worth the paper they are written on, loyalty in the game is very rare as its all about the money and how much they can get... don't they earn enough?
Get rid, as he has shown no respect to the manager or fans with his messing about over the whole saga, we want committed players not ones that have pounds signs in their eyes.
If it wasn't for Moyes he would probably still be playing in the Championship.
30 Posted 11/08/2009 at 09:55:55
I just hope that we can keep hold of him, and show Man City that they cannot buy whom ever they want, in the same way that many of the European clubs have told them to get stuffed.
31 Posted 11/08/2009 at 10:00:46
That small glimmer that he didn't actually want to go has now diminished. If he doesn't want to play for us, we shouldn't force him to. We especially shouldn't force someone to play for us, who doesn't want to, when we could get £20m for him.
Mr Moyes, we can all see that you do not and have not been willing to sell. But if he doesn't want to play let him go. Pocket the money and make those signings you are desperate to make.
Joleon, you are making a big mistake, thanks for your contribution over the last few seasons. Enjoy the extra dollar, and enjoy watching us in Europe.
32 Posted 11/08/2009 at 09:59:34
A few other points: I don't think Senderos is a good enough replacement, or is he worth £6mil.
A problem with Lescott gone is who will play next to Baines? There is a slight imbalance there as Yobo and Jagielka are both right footed but I guess it will be Jags.
I can't believe Moyes turned down £8mil for Saha! Anyone would think we were made of money. If that's the case why haven't we bought anyone! Any way you cut this summer, again it's been a total shambles from the hierarchy, although they are probably tapping themselves on their backs for saving us 1 months wages.
33 Posted 11/08/2009 at 13:24:58
I have no gripe with him wanting to double his money. But he is under contract and we need him. Moyes is right just reject his request and sell him when it suits us. We have to remember that they are professionals and don't have the same devoted passion for the blues as we do.
34 Posted 11/08/2009 at 13:30:36
And to be honest, even though we have been consistent over the last couple of years, given our inactivity in the transfer market this summer we have taken a step backwards and it is highly unlikely we will break the Top 4 this summer.
Joleon must also be realising that Everton have reach their limit given the current resources at the club.
It is in Everton's best interest to offload him as quickly as possible.

37 Posted 11/08/2009 at 13:40:37
It’s an absolute farce as far as the club is concerned. You’ve got Moyes in the press again saying we’re not at all ready for the start of the season - deja vu, anyone? - and now we’ve got one of our CBs on the way out while the other one is injured.
All four days before the start of the season.
What a joke.

39 Posted 11/08/2009 at 13:32:36
DM is in a difficult situation. Villa refused to let Barry go last season and he played well for them so perhaps the DM gamble will pay off. On balance I applaud his approach.
40 Posted 11/08/2009 at 13:43:06
Why else would Moyes speak to the press about this? Or, as you say, the OS be ringing it out from the rooftops.
It’s the Everton way.
41 Posted 11/08/2009 at 13:39:16
Back onto Lescott, I too think that his situation has now become untenable after the reception he received last Friday night and I can’t see him wearing the shirt again. Don’t agree with Upson as a replacment, too old and expensive.
42 Posted 11/08/2009 at 13:35:50
I don’t blame Lescott for wanting to leave for the money, sure they earn a hell of a lot but footballers have a short and insecure working life.
I’m torn as to whether to sell him now though — the timing of this isn’t good with the season starting, would have been a lot better a month ago. It all depends on whether we can still get over £20m from City now they know Lescott is pushing to leave, and if we can get an adequate replacement in time for the start of the season (in addition to Senderos as cover for Jags and Yobo). Upson for ~£12m would be ideal in the circumstances but we’d likely have to pay more. We also need time to make good use of the rest of the money, to bring in other players to improve the squad overall.
It’s possible this will all turn out well, but worst case it we hang onto Lescott until Jan and he plays like shit until then, agitates for a move, and drags down the team performance and his own value in the meantime. My own inclination would be to sell now as long as City are still offering at least £20m, hopefully Moyes has some good players lined up that can be brought in at short notice if we have the money.
43 Posted 11/08/2009 at 13:29:02
Now that he had handed in a transfer request I am equally unsure about what we should do. Either:
(A) Refuse to grant him his wish, accept that he will be furious and that his form will suffer and subsequently be left out of the team. In this case we lose a key player and he devalues as a saleable assett (ie City won’t be interested once they buy another big player for that postition). However, in this case we are, as a club striking a blow against "player power" and forcing him to honour the contract he signed not long ago. He will also lose his place in the England set up and ultimately endure a nighmare season.
Or (B). Tell City they can have him for £30million and not a penny less setting deadline for the same. If they don’t cough up (and they can afford to) then back to plan A. If they do then we have significant funds to buy a good centre back and the all important RM and RB we so need.
Lescott is very good but not world class don’t forget.
44 Posted 11/08/2009 at 13:52:43
45 Posted 11/08/2009 at 13:44:42
Why can we never get our transfers sorted out before the start of the season? We haven’t even signed a centre back who could fill in if Lescott was to leave. on another note, Kenwright needs to find some investment quick, because we are risking losing our best players like Lescott to teams who have the funds to improve and challenge for a Champions League spot.
46 Posted 11/08/2009 at 13:46:53
1. Yes I know experience tells us that in football a contract doesn’t mean too much, and most people would want to move jobs if someone offered to double their salary, but the difference is footballers sign a fixed term contract.
As an employee I sign a contract but the notice period is typically a month (both sides of the deal). A footballer’s salary is often a reflection of the length of the contract they sign - the longer the deal, the better the dosh.
So, morally a footballer SHOULD in fact see out his contract and EARN his money unless ALL parties are happy to see him move on. But, as we know, this is football.
Doubtless Wolves fans were sad when we snapped Joleon up, but the difference is Wolves were happy to take our £5 mil
I genuinely believe EFC want to keep JL - unless we’re made an offer too good we’d be mad to refuse (and £18 mil ain’t there yet, not by a long chalk).
2. Citeh were either very fortunate or very shrewd with their choice of target.
A successful raid on our squad is a win-win for them. They get their man and they likely disturb our squad in the processes - just what they need if they want to finish 5th or better.
Hopefully either DM can shore up the damage or spend wisely any money he gets out of this.
If you look where we are now and remember where we were when he joined us, I’d wager DM will keep the ship sailing through this storm in the right direction.
COYBB and balls to the rest!
47 Posted 11/08/2009 at 13:48:10
I say take what they offer next, buy what we can, Senderos to fill in whilst Jags is out. Remember, Senderos is not a replacement, he was always going to be cover wether Lescott stays or goes. Get a RB, cover for LB, a right sided midfielder and an holding midfielder.
It's asking a lot to get players for those positions with such little time left in the window with limited money too because nobody knows for sure whether Moyes will get the full fee from City to spend on squad rebuilding.
I heard a little murmour on one site, cant remember which, that Moyesy wont sell his players because he’s not sure wether he’d get the full fees to spend on bringing in replacements, hence the rejected Lescott, Saha and Vaughan bids?!
48 Posted 11/08/2009 at 13:56:37
Normally, I’d be more pissed off about the whole situation but the club has managed to eek out what remaining emotion I had a long ago. Kenwright & Co couldn’t be trusted with running a Church tombola
49 Posted 11/08/2009 at 14:02:26
50 Posted 11/08/2009 at 13:57:37
Anyone else now think that Moyes was watching the PSG game at the weekend for Sakho? Like Lescott, a centre back who is equally comfortable at leftback, young, strong and powerfull and with immense potential. Arsenal have been sniffing around him for a while now but have done nothing, I’m hoping Moyes can pinch him as a direct replacement. Also, he becomes the best defender in the world on my football manager game so could be the first significant tip off from that deal.
51 Posted 11/08/2009 at 14:00:18
Thank him,pack him off;move on.
And then look forward to his press conference, where he’ll surely refer to his desire to join City,as being: "For football reasons,"
Naturally,we should slaughter him on his sky-blue return to Goodison...
52 Posted 11/08/2009 at 14:04:20
It worked well enough for Barry last season and that wasn’t a World Cup season, let him earn his money buy having a great season then we can get shut.....if Citteh still want him.
He should be professional enough to realise if he screws us about it reduces his saleability and ergo reduces his chance for better wages and a place in the England World Cup Squad.
Shithouse tactic to do it whilst he is out of the country but he has a contract and well done to Moyes for pretty much telling him he has to honour it.
53 Posted 11/08/2009 at 14:06:05
54 Posted 11/08/2009 at 13:46:40
Moyes tried to maintain the services of the player with his unwillingness to sell mantra forcing Man City to increase their offers incrementally, this unfortunately has dragged over the Summer and Lescott who clearly had his head turned at a very early stage has finally bitten the bullet and submitted a transfer therefore voiding his loyalty bonus.
The appalling close season efforts to sign players and constant lack of money and investment ensures that Champions League football is further away than ever for us and Man City with their billions and multiple mega signings are clearly the favourites now to break the big four monopoly.
Moyes refusal to accept the request is perhaps a stalling tactic to allow him to have a heart to heart with the player perhaps asking him to wait until January allowing Moyes time to sign an adequate replacement.
It would have been ideal for Lescott to submit a transfer request within days of the cup final and then create a bidding war between the monied clubs for his services allowing Moyes some much needed millions and the time to strengthen.
That of course is not the way it turned out and we are left with an unhappy defender, a frustrated manager, no money and a depleted squad.
City will get their man eventually and hopefully Moyes will once again turn adversity into triumph.
55 Posted 11/08/2009 at 14:03:07
This is good business for Everton. The player wants away - understandable given the wage increase. The possibility of winning trophies does noe come into the equation - this is purelys financial, as Everton should stand as well a chance as Man City of winning something (my opinion anyway). And £22 million is a fantastic price for Lescott, in my opinion.
This is a good deal because it gives Moyes a better chance of landing other transfer targets and making the squad bigger and better. Baines has progressed well and can fill the left back position, Neville as cover - and we can surely land a centre back for £6-7 million, and still have money for a couple of shrewd offensive signings (like Rasmus Elm, a very good prospect). Perhaps even a fem million used on larger downpayment on current loans is a good idea?
For building a better squad and thinking long term, and with the player himself declaring he wants away, thus alienating him from the supporters and possibly ruining morale in the dressing room, this is a no-brainer. Espescially for a cash-strapped club.

The fans also need to understand that it is in the Club’s interest not to give him a hard time as long as he wears a Royal Blue jersey, as that may affect his performance and hurt our team.
Moyes has taken a stance - "no player sales this summer”, and I don’t think he is going to back down (knowing his stubborness) and BK will dare not do anything contrary to Moyes’ wishes.
We are going to be stuck with Lescott for a while, so might as well cheer him as long as he plays for Everton.
If everybody is sensible about this, nobody is gonna get hurt !

One point interested me, they basically said that we have them over a barrell.
The reason?
The World Cup.
Basically, even if he wants to leave Lescott can’t throw a strop and not give his all to Everton because its World Cup year and if he wants to be picked he needs to give his best in every game anyway. Then when the world cup is over we can sell him and city will have signed someone else.
Still annoys me himhanding in the request after the other night though.
60 Posted 11/08/2009 at 14:40:04
Wolves Chief executive Moxey added: "Wolves will receive £2m up front, plus another £2m to be paid in instalments over the next two-and-a-half years, subject to Joleon continuing to play football. The remaining £1m is subject to player appearances."
Doesn’t mention any sell on clause?
he made over 200 appearances for Wolves and scored 13 goals.
Makes his 10goal season for us stand out like a sore thumb as a one off doesnt it?
Moyes hailing him as "the best centre-half in the Championship".
Now I know that Senderos has been slagged off but I would defo say we would get him for less than 5mil and he has better pedigree than lescott when he signed him, then we can get another CB of good regard, a LB cover and still have money over to try and do something with the right side.
Maybe its not such a disaster
61 Posted 11/08/2009 at 14:48:40
We are a club that, despite all the BK bashing that goes on here (be it rightly or not, I’m not opening that can of worms!) but the fact is that we are a club that has "Soul".
We achieve amazing heights on no budget and we all care so passionately that we argue and fight about our beloved team until we’re blue in the face (pun intended).
The fact is that I know some City fans and they used to be mad for it, but since the takeover and the money, they claim their club has lost its ’soul’.
I also have some chelski-supporting friends who say the same.
My point is, if Jolly wants off to this shit-hole just for the cash, then good riddance. I thought he was a man of character and would stand up to all this crap, but if he wants his money and doesn’t care about the supporters or the club that really made him great, then that’s not the type of player I would want on my team.
And, as above I would agree that he has done this in the most cowardly way which is another indication of his flagging character.
Senderos is under-rated and while Jolly is good, I wouldn’t even for a second call him irreplaceable.
£23m plus add-ons and replace him with Senderos and despite how much I used to love JL, I’d now be delighted.
62 Posted 11/08/2009 at 14:53:14
However when citeh started courting our player i think we all thought he can go but for the right price £25 mil etc
Moyes has gone fuck that yo’ve got a contract to 2012 laddie and your gona see it out
It could be a genius move or a move that undermines the club but a big part of me is thinking the days of the rooneys etc using EFC as a stepping stone are long gone this is Moyes gaff and you play by his rules
Having said all that if citeh still want the player they now have to make a bloody spectacular offer (20 mil + SWP or £30 mil cash etc)
We will see if moyes holds his nerve, the reality is if lescott stays and wants to go to africa next summer he has to make a choice if he goes as a spectator or as a part of the england squad,
I think moyes would see that as a win-win
63 Posted 11/08/2009 at 14:56:07
64 Posted 11/08/2009 at 14:55:19
For me, the solution is a simple one. If Lescott and the other top players were offered £60k pw to stay here, I reckon it would be a no-brainer
.
The trouble is, Moyes wont let anyone be on a salary match with him.........
65 Posted 11/08/2009 at 15:14:26
Yeah mate good one.
I cant see anything else but selling lescott with the situation at the mo, he will be roundly booed at goodison on saturday and to be honest I dont blame the booers I agree with them the way he has done this is a disgrace after the reception he got the other day.
Give us £25 and see you later.
66 Posted 11/08/2009 at 15:17:21
Also ,there’s no way on earth he’s woth £22 million.A good enough player but one who has fallen short at international level. He’s done a good job,we’re making a good profit, good luck to him.I just hope the money will be quickly invested in targets that one would hope David Moyes has had in mind for some time/
67 Posted 11/08/2009 at 15:33:06
I reckon they could pay up to about £24mil
68 Posted 11/08/2009 at 15:26:04
Upson could be bought for 10m, but is already on over £70k pw. Look at the teams around us and tell me which of their top players are on £40k. Moyes must know this but cannot compete
69 Posted 11/08/2009 at 15:41:51
What a tangled web......!
70 Posted 11/08/2009 at 15:42:19
So two top 4 teams have looked at him, does that fit the as good as or nearly category? and I would bet he isnt on 40k a week, more like 20k I would guess.
That answer your question.
Also when Villa bought Ashley Youngsure he wasnt straight on to over 40k, or agbonlahor who came through their academy?
Pretty much the whole Fulham squad I would guess.
That enough?
I think ur upson example is a perfect example of why not to give players that much wages, he isnt worth 70k a week at all.
Wonder how much Hangeland is on at Fulham, probably about a quarter of what upson is on.
71 Posted 11/08/2009 at 15:50:19
72 Posted 11/08/2009 at 15:49:44
How much is Young on now? His wages have gone up as Villa want to keep him.
Lots of players are on more than they are worth but if you want to be up there you have to get somewhere near the going rate.
If you want Everton to be like Fulham thats fine, but I want us to be challenging the top four. Hangeland is in the same situation as Lescott, lets see what happens when the offers start flying in for him.
The players we have are paid comparative peanuts to players of similar stature in most of the other prem teams. You obviously are happy as long as we are battling relegation with Stoke and Hull. I thought we’d moved on from that
73 Posted 11/08/2009 at 15:58:33
IMWT. EFC far bigger than any one player. A close friend said to me that he had a think and would only be truly gutted if one of 3 players left EFC. Jagielka (our best defender in my opinion), Artteta (our creative spark) and Cahill (our heartbeat - he does often set the tempo).
74 Posted 11/08/2009 at 15:59:50
To suggest that Moyes in your words, "has not boxed clever and has let his heart rule his head the whole way through this situation. Lescott was clearly forced to play his official hand."
Well surely it's the complete opposite? Because of loyalty bonus clauses in players' contracts, they receive between 10-20% of any transfer fee, unless of course they sumbit a written transfer request... so, should Lescott be sold, Moyes has in fact" Boxed clever" and saved the club somewhere in the region of £2 to 5 million....
Or to put it another way, a years wages for a player wanting £40- £70,000. a week. But as usual... let's bash him with any old stick by simply making things up.
75 Posted 11/08/2009 at 16:03:10
Average price of Everton season ticket:
£550
number of season tickets sold
26,000
Total raised
£14.3m
say another 10,000 per match on average at £30 ticket average
Total raised £6.1m
I will be generous and add another couple of million for cup runs etc..
Overall total
£22.4m.
I know I havent included sky money yet, but this is probably more than the ticket revenue will will receive over the course of the season.
Now
£60k a week, 52 weeks, £3.1m
So we can afford 7 of your players based on our ticket receipts, but then whats stopping them going to West Ham, after all Upson is on £70k a week!

Evertons results for the past year
Turnover:
08: £75.6m
07: £51.4m
Operating expenses (mostly wages)
08:£68.8m
07:£62.4m
Interest payments
08:£3.9m
07:£2.9m
Profit/loss
08:£26,000 (yes thats right!)
07:(£9.4m)
So you want to increase the top line of wages by 50% ok lets increase last years wages by 50%
Staff wages 08: £44.5m
increased 50%, £66.75m
Increase of £22.25m, that would mean if we do the same as last year we will have a loss of over £20m.
I admit it your right, lets pay people wages like Newcastle, Portsmouth, Leeds when we cant afford it. It can only lead to success.
79 Posted 11/08/2009 at 16:37:59
I like him and feel that he has given us great service, but money aside, anyone who believes that Mancheser City is a better place to be than Goodison... needs to leave!
80 Posted 11/08/2009 at 16:45:12
The comparison of the wages vs gate receipts was to show the cost of giving someone 60k a week against our revenues.
AND SUPRISINGLY gate receipts are a BIG chunk of our revenues. If you dont believe me go ask Robert Elstone.
81 Posted 11/08/2009 at 16:44:06
Forget Upson. Surely that would be a backward step.
Hangeland looks like he’s going to Arsenal, but would be a good signing.
Turner? No. Not at that price. One season in the top flight and he’s worth more than we paid for jags and bainsey?
What other names will be bandied about? Steven Taylor, David Wheater, Michael Mancienne, Micah Richards.
Personally I’d keep hold of JL until a replacement is lined up. I wouldn’t play him but out of principle for being a jellyfish and waiting until he was miles away, I’d leave him sweating.
Bleed them fuckers for every penny. They’ve got exactly what they want. Now lets do the same!!

We will not keep our better players while we pay them half of what their equals are being paid at other clubs. I will say it again, if you are happy with us being perennial relegation battlers then be happy with the pay structure- I am not, and as such would like to see sufficient investment into the club so we can match the ambition of the likes of spurs and even Newcastle.
The difference being we have a quality manager and the nucleus of a quality squad to push on. The next step will never be taken without a bigger wage bill - Sad but true
87 Posted 11/08/2009 at 16:54:51
What went on between Moyes and Lescott then? How much communication was there between them? If Lescott has banged in a transfer request now, what was it that prohibited him from doing it prior?
Did Moyes ask him point blank what his intentions were, and at the same time explain his ideas for the forthcoming season etc? Surely, Moyes must have been keeping his eye on this particular ball for some weeks now, and as we have all seen, there was hardly a squeak from JL about wanting a move.
Has this request taken Moyes by surprise, because it damn well shouldnt have done. He should have been giving orders to our scouts to look for possible replacements whilst at the same time seeking to persuade Lescott to stay--- by promising to bring in players pre season (ha ha). Here we are, a few days before kick off, and apart from Jo and a few kids, nothing!!! Sorry David, but you do frustrate me at times with your dithering and indecision. I wont get into substitutions in matches, there will be plenty of ammo for that this season.
OK, let him go, as most of you are saying, and lets for gods sake start making a few signings.

89 Posted 11/08/2009 at 17:05:17
You want to increase the likes of lescotts wages by £20k A WEEK, this will also have a knock on effect with the rest of the squad who will also want wage increases.
But you think this makes sense?
What world do you live in?
Lescott has been at us for 2 and a half years while everyone else got these wages, Areta, Yobo, Yakubu, Cahill these people didnt walk in the door yesterday, they have been happy with their wages for a long time now, I didnt hear lescott crying about his wages when he signed a new contract. Just because other clubs operate out of their means doesnt mean we should. We cant afford more wages.
If i was a professional footballer on 40k a week I can tell you know I would be a v v v happy man, getting another 20k or 40k a week wouldnt make a massive difference how happy I was. Knowing that all the people who turned up every week and paid the money they worked hard for every day appreciated my effort (for a v bloated reward) and were willing to applaud me a whole game to show that would definetely have more sway on me than that.
But hey im not a professional footballer so that doesnt matter. I just work all year for less than Lescotts pitiful 40k a week.
90 Posted 11/08/2009 at 17:33:55
I guess also that the banks have a say on how much the Club can spend/borrow against new signings.
Why the hell don’t people see the big picture and recognise the fight BB has on his hands just to keep us stable?

92 Posted 11/08/2009 at 18:14:24
One thing to come out of this is a deep disliking of Man City I’ve never had before. The way they have gone about chasing Lescott is disgraceful. Funny how he hands in his transfer request whilst on England duty, just like Rooney.
I applaud the club for not selling him to City, a direct competitor. We should offload him to a European club and let his career nose dive like so many other players who got above their station at Goodison!
93 Posted 11/08/2009 at 18:17:09
Would also send a message to anyone else contemplating their future.
If he had come out right at the start and said he wants to go, then I would have seen that as showing a bit of integrity and honesty. This smacks of greed, pure and simple.
Playing him on Saturday would be counter productive.
Looks like City might be getting ready to abandon him anyway. So much for loyalty
I hate EFC players playing for England, as they always come back with ideas of bigger and better things!

This is going to be make or break time for Everton. Let him go and I’ll guarantee that by Xmas Arteta , Yakubu, Pinnear will be also be looking to jump ship. The sole reason is in the fact that Everton salaries are one of the lowest in the Premiership.
A Toon supporter did some work last season and some of the facts are shown below. The accuracy might be questionable but the trend is right.(see my reply to the “Budgets” mailbag to see the source)
(i)They listed the Top 70 earners and we have 1 player in that list in 58th place - Joleyn Lescott with a salary of £35k/wk
(ii) Top salary earners for the other Top 10 teams
Chelsea - £115k/wk
Man U - £115k/wk
Arsenal - £75k/wk
Liverpool - £115k/wk
Newcastle - £75k/wk , Owen apart who got £110k/wk
Spurs - £60k/wk
Aston Villa - £50k/wk
Everton - £35k/wk
Man City - £85k/wk
Blackburn - no player in Top 70
Portsmouth - £50k/wk
West Ham - £75k/wk
Sunderland - £50k/wk
Wigan - £30k/wk
What this tells us is that our excellent team spirit comes from the fact that we have a squad all being paid roughly the same, no prima donna’s being paid fortunes and not contributing. What it also tells us is that the biggest obstacle I believe Moyes is faced is that Top quality Premier League, CL players just wont come to us for a salary of £40k/wk .
We rely on the born again Sahas, Pienaars , the lesser European players, Arteta, Fellainis and the Championship goodies, Lescott, Jags and hope to hell Moyes turns them into world beaters — which he’s pretty good at doing.
The trouble will be when 1 player moves for better monies the rest will follow , PARTICULARLY IF THEY FEEL LET DOWN AFTER SEASON OF SEASON OF FALSE PROMISES BY THE BOARD !!!!.
Moyes has no choice but to refuse the request or the house will come tumbling down, which it may also do if the fans react to Lescott in a huge negative way. The players wont stand for it, after all they are only carrying out their trade and good luck to anyone who can better himself, salary wise, and potentially play at the higher levels.
98 Posted 11/08/2009 at 18:27:00
When we are in talks with a player its takes so long to do the deal, who is doing the talking for us? Bill why dont you get yourself on Dragons Den, theres a few wealthy people there looking to invest there money sure things.
I am afraid it might be like last year going into a season with a thread bare squad, but with the difference being we wont have the ball boys on the bench in the first match. But in Moyes we trust to get us through this start, and we will get some influential players back soon.

One thing we are forgetting in all this is he is not actually worth anything over £12M in my eyes and not many central defenders are.
We have sold far more important and better players than him in the past so sod him, get the cash asap and buy some players with width and speed which will move us forward more than keeping him and not getting these players.
104 Posted 11/08/2009 at 19:30:45
You took many of the words out of my mouth. However, I would add something else. It is plainly false to call footballers nothing but employees. In fact they are self-employed. They sign contracts like Lescott did last year and presumably he was happy to do so and sold his services to Everton football club for whatever the agreed package was. I didn’t hear him complaining at the time.
A player asking for a transfer is NOT like an employee (like most of us) looking for a better paid job, it is more like a builder signing a contract to build my house then wanting to jack it in halfway through because somebody else wants to pay him more for building theirs.
Contracts in football are of limited value only because Clubs allow them to be. Everton had to fulfill VanDM’s contract for fuck all in return and I see no reason why a Club can’t insist a player fulfills theirs. Villa refused to allow Barry to leave last year until they were ready. I see no reason why Moyes is not entitled to do the same with Lescott. It is Mr Moyes who is demonstrating a principled stance here not Lescott, and as for Moyes undermining Lescott (FFS!) how is insisting a player fulfills his contract undermining him? It might disappoint his Bank Manager, but UNDERMINING him?
I don’t know who or what Ciaran McGlone is an apologist for but he certainly is one. If I didn’t know better I would suggest he was Lescott’s agent posting under a pseudonym! Fucking strewth!
105 Posted 11/08/2009 at 19:48:42
David Moyes has performed minor miracles with a limited budget, and is the best young manager about. He lacks a trophy, but otherwise he’s one of our top three (you know the other two, not Mike Walker).
And wage; 35 000 a week? 140 000 a month? 1,68 million a year? These are good wages and in the current economic climate, minus Real Madrid, Chelsea and Man City, it should be possible to convince our transfer targets that this is not too bad :)
106 Posted 11/08/2009 at 19:58:34
And Mike Oates - I understand a Lescott trasfer can be construed as Everton being a club lacking ambition, but the fact of the matter is that the player wants to leave, we need the money and it enables us to strengthen our squad. What did Rooney leave for? Even close to the same amount for Lescott is amazing...
If the Lescott transfer makes Yak, Pienaar and others want to jump ship, I’ll be amazed. I believe the players at the moment are not attractive enough for top clubs, and I believe they will respect and understand the Lescott transfer both from a player perspective and an Everton perspective. To become attractive for top clubs, they must continue to perform in a blue shirt!
107 Posted 11/08/2009 at 20:13:09
2) If Moyes made him play out his contract we;d lose out on 20 odd million wouldn’t we?
I don’t know how I feel towards him about what he’s done. I wish he hadn’t (obviously) but as many have said before me "who wouldn’t take the chance to double or treble their wage?"
I just wish we DID have enough money to say "Sorry me ole’ son, you’re here until your contracts complete, end of!
As it is (realistically). I’d make City cough up at least £25m, preferably £30, but I dont think they’ll go that high, and try and get three players with the money we get...QUICKLY!

109 Posted 11/08/2009 at 20:14:04
1. I wonder if the clause Moyes had inserted in his contract that he was responsible for all players coming and going had something to do with McFadden and Andy Johnson being sold before we could get Fellaini last year and he is now digging his heels in because feels if Lescott goes he wont be given the funds to spend?
2. For all those saying Lescott could double his money and therefore is right to seek it out remember he signed a five year contract less than 12 months ago and was quite happy with the terms of that.He significantly increased his earnings and reputation since moving to Everton and should remember that 5 year contract was also for his protection.
3. Against that the players may have been led to believe that reinforcements were on the way after last year’s farce and have now seen the same thing happening again. They have certainly looked disspirited close season despite the Malaga game.
4. I dont believe in keeping unsettled players because it becomes a cancer in the squad so cash in and get Gary Cahill from Bolton and Boswinga (if possible) from Chelsea.
Time is of the essence.
Doddy the only fight BK has is to convince everyone that he does not lie every time he opens his mouth and that he is competent enough to improve Evertons income more in line with the success on the pitch neither of which he has proved capable of for the last 8 years.
110 Posted 11/08/2009 at 20:31:34
Short term we need another central defender, long term we need wide players with some bloody flair instead of having to resort to playing lumps like Anichebe out wide.
Lets except it now,get shut and move forward because IF Moyes is allowed all the funds this could prove a blessing in disguise and personally who wants to see him start Saturday?
Bollocks to him and lets show him what he will be missing when he is at Stockport or whoever in the Carling cup when he should be in Europe with us.

112 Posted 11/08/2009 at 20:49:15
For a start, everyone should already realise that as soon as an everton player pulls on an england shirt more than once, they inevitably leave for greener grass. We’ve had the heads-up for a while.
Secondly, have you all forgotten how appallingly bad lescott was last season for the first 10 games? Seriously, I would have driven him to city myself then for £5 million. He was very, very poor and I could not understand why he was still in the team. To get £20 million for him now is dreamland, particularly since in a couple of months time we will have jags and yobo in those berths.
Lastly, I’ve been very surprised at all the "professional" claims on here, and "loyalty" when linked with lescott. It was well known he threw his toys out of the pram when being asked to play left-back for us in time of need, and wasnt happy at all with it. That is not the sign of someone I want to wear the everton jersey.
Let him go to city. He’ll be in and out of the team for the first season, in the second season he will be mainly warming the bench as they bring in better players and they realise he is not in the top 3 of english centre-halfs, and by year 3 he will be playing for fulham/wigan/bolton who will then be relegated that year to the championship. Such is the way of things.
For £20 million quid we can improve our squad better than keeping him. 1 step back, 2-3 steps forward.
113 Posted 11/08/2009 at 21:06:22
If, Everton were not in Europe, next week, we would be playing City in the second game of the season. Ironic if it wasn’t tragic.
114 Posted 11/08/2009 at 22:26:37
1. I’m glad jags is injuried because we all know he is the better of the two and shitty may have gone for him..
2. Maybe players like hibbo will get a bit more respect from fans. He gives his all every match would be happy to stay forever yet still gets stick every match..

“We will continue to work with him as we appreciate his many qualities as a player. (Translation - great player, but to hand in a written tranfer request 4 days before the 1st game of the season means DM doesn’t rate him very highly off the pitch!)
“I have said all along that I have no intention of selling my best players.“Joleon is simply not for sale.”(Translation - DM is very stubborn, and would happily dig his heels in and not sell)
Having found it hard to sign new players over the past couple of years - DM is demented this week...The only way I see Moyes backing down and granting JL his wish, is when we have a replacement of JLs quality signed. I don’t see DM being happy with Sendeross/Neville/Rodwell & Yobo against Arsenal - and £x millions to try and find and then agree terms with a suitable replacement....and who would DM consider adequate? It would have to be someone settled in the Prem (given his prior experience of Italian league CBs). Only 5 teams conceded less than us last year - I can’t see the 4 teams above us selling us one of their CBs..the other team is Fulham (Haageland?).
Because I think DM will not be able to replace JL & would find it difficult to attract a number of new faces with the transfer fee within the next 2 weeks - I think the only option that would shift him from his current stance is players coming in from Man City in exchange for JL.....Why would he want a gapping hole in his defense until Xmas and £x million in the bank?
So who would you want & how much are they worth? There’s a long list i.e. Richards/Onouha/Dunne/SWP/Johnson/Petrov/Jo/Ireland etc. etc.

"99% of footballers are money motivated"
99% of everyone is money motivated? Its his job to play football.
If you were offered double your salary for a company up the road, you wouldn’t leave? I bet you’d be gone quicker than Lescott has/is!
123 Posted 11/08/2009 at 23:45:13
Also everyone knows he’s not the best centre back at the club any more, but still one of the best in the prem, so if we sell, what signals are we sending out to the other players at the club? My opinion would be no ambition; maybe City will be back in January next year for Jags, Arteta or Rodwell (if he has a good start).
Moyes has to make a definite decision in the next 24 hrs, which will either show signals that we have ambition to carry on moving forward or we are prepared to gamble for the money and risk losing other key players. It’s hard enough trying to attract players to the club now, but how will we go about it if we show we are a club willing to sell our better players?
PS Any bets Lescott picks up an injury this week!!
124 Posted 12/08/2009 at 01:48:57
But again it comes down to fees and wages which would be considerably less for O’Neill than the Turkish captain!

Of course we could have made loads of cash – but that’s exactly what Joleon was thinking too…. Why would it be ok for the club to cash in and not for JL ?
Moyes is one of the only managers in the PL who stick to his guns and you can criticise that or you can say he really is the Moyesiah of real football rather than a businessman with no footballing heart or passion. Depends I guess on how you define the word ‘football’. I for one am very proud of Moyes and wish others would follow suit in standing up to the likes of Man. City or (sur)Real Madrid. At some stage that bubble will burst and we can get back to sport…. maybe. I’m expecting 10 goals from JL this season again.
128 Posted 12/08/2009 at 08:46:19
We all know football changed in 1992 and became all about money.
He’s not a supporter of Everton so why would he stay? He’s going to double his wages without having to move house. The fact that we bought him a couple of years ago doesn’t mean he is forever in our debt.
Anyone posting on this site who says they wouldn’t move themselves if they were offered the chance to double their wages in another job is a liar.
FFS grow up and get over the fact that there is no loyalty in football and it’s just business.
As for ridiculing him for wanting to leave is pathetic. With regards to the timing of the transfer request. We don’t know when he handed it in exactly. We chose to announce it yesterday but he may have given to Moyes in person before he went. Who cares anyway? It’s irrelevant.
Lets me honest as well. Who are more likely to break the top 4? Us or City? Without us investing in the team while everyone around us are means theres only one way for us to go..

130 Posted 12/08/2009 at 11:39:14
On the point about footballers being all about money and loyalty not coming into it - I think that is simplifying things too much. To give an Aussie example, look at the behaviour or Tim Cahill versus Lucas Neill. Cahill has stated publicly his loyalty, signed up a long term contract even though I’m guessing he could get offers else where. Lucas Neill, chose West Ham over Liverpool for purely money reasons and then ran down his contract so that he could tart himself to the highest bidder. He considering going to Sunderland FFS! So, not ALL players behave the same way and just chase money. Maybe City should sign Neill?
131 Posted 12/08/2009 at 11:27:43
Moyes’ hard line stance is in my opinion quite simply explained. With Jags out until end November (at the earliest) we have only two fit centre backs and JL is one of them. The only real option we have, without immediately buying, is Jack Rodwell. Much as I admire what young Jack achieved last season, he has never played a senior competetive match for EFC at centre back. I know he has played there for the reserves but there is a world of difference between that level and the Premier League. To start a new season with a centre back partnership of Yobo and Rodwell would be a huge risk and one that I can well understand that Moyes is not prepered to contemplate - hence the hard nose stance.
So, where do we go from here? One contentious possiblility with two options is:
1. Accept an improved offer (22M?) in principle but insist that the deal be frozen until January. Down side would be no exchange of cash until then which may not be Everton’s best interest.
2. Accept the deal now but stipulate an absolute condition that Citeh immediately loan JL back to us (or Onuora or Richards) until January. This would give us cash now plus time to get Jags fit and scout for a suitable back-up.
I can well imagine that many Everton fans would not be happy with this possibility, paying their hard-earned cash to watch a player who no longer wants to play for us. But then, if Moyes maintains his understandable hard nosed stance, are we not facing exactly this scenario anyway? Right now, whether we like it or not, DM has little option other than to play Lescott alongside Yobo. If Baines were to be injured or suspended, JL is again our only current option. Whichever way you look at it we have an unfortunate and undesirable situation.

1. What an absolute shitbag he really is – handing in a transfer request when he’s not even in the country.
2. He is unbelievably selfish and doesn’t give a flying fuck about his mates. We are always hearing about how all the players are mates would do anything for each other, yet he still wants to clear off knowing we are short at centre half’s while Jags is injured.
3. I am sick of hearing ‘well if someone offered to double your wages you’d quit your company to move’. Yes I would, but there’s a BIG difference. I’m on £300 a week. Lescott is on 30k to 40k a week, already a millionaire. The extra money he will get isn’t going to alter his lifestyle a great deal – if at all.
4. Keep him. It’s World Cup year, so if he sulks and plays poorly he won’t be going to South Africa. He plays well, has a good World Cup, his value will go up and he still has two years left on his contract.
5. If he does go, it’s a certainty Jags will nick his World Cup place. Playing well in both the league and in Europe will put him ahead of Lescott. And that would be funny!!
135 Posted 12/08/2009 at 13:16:01
EFC left with one fit centre back for start of the season
EFC left with no defensive cover at left back
EFC’s defence weakened considerably.
EFC’s attacking threat at set pieces weakened considerably.
One of our main competitors for finishing anywhere near the CL places is strengthened considerably.
Possible replacements are currently valued at £10-12m (Upson, Turner) by their current teams. After paying sell on fee to Wolves, then any available money to strengthen the team would be less than £10m and some would have to be spent on cover at left back. I doubt that there would be much left then - certainly not enough to sign someone who will add to the team. Someone suggested that we could pick up another centre half for about £6-7m to replace JL – surely if whoever it was, was going to be good enough, why aren’t Shitteh after him?
Rest of star players may become unsettled and think about leaving.
It’s not about loyalty – only the fans are loyal, and even then when the team isn’t playing well, there’s often a reason for not going to the match . . . This is all about selling one of our better players to one of our main rivals (it would be the same if it were Spurs or Villa) and the message it sends out to the footy world is that we are on the slide and have had our shot at the big time.
The fact that it would leave us with one fit centre half is just typical Everton!!!!

Full marks to DM for his stance - let it be a lesson to the rest.

It is really very difficult to keep players who have stated a desire to leave and motivating someone for a year by saying, "It is a World Cup season and this is the only chance you will get to play in a showcase like this, so don’t blow it" is harder still.
On a slightly different take, I’m with those who think JL plays better for Everton than he does for England and I wonder if he mightn’t look so good under the City microscope.
