Is the glass half full?

Comments (18)

I can't beleive the number of negative posts that appear on this forum day after day. If you took half of them at face value you would believe that we got relegated last season and are starting the season with minus 10 points! We may just as well get the gun out and end it now!

People who always see the negative side of any given situation, always seeing the glass as half-empty, I call triple 'D'ers. For those of you who have never heard this term before, the three 'D's stands for Death, Doom and Despondency.

You can hear these triple 'D'ers now: "We haven't bought anybody"; "We will struggle to finish in the top 10"; "With no investment we are doomed"; "After Lescott leaves, more players will be leaving"....; "Sack Moyes"; "Sack BK".

What is wrong with these people?? I know it's frustrating that we haven't won a trophy for over 12 years, but let's try and be a bit more positive. Have Bill Kenwright and his administration done that bad a job?

I don't need to remind you that we DID finish 5th in the Premier League, we got to the FA Cup Final and we got to the quarter finals of the Carling Cup. It would have been nicer to get a better run in the Uefa Cup, but you could lump that setback in with our poor start to the season.

On the financial side of things the club IS just about living within its means. It is starting to get better at creating revenue, at the same time keeping control of players' wages and not negotiating transfers the club can't afford.

Given all of these restraints and the lack of real investment, Moyes has built up a squad of players that is starting to get talked about in a postive sense in most corridors of the media. It is arguably the strongest squad we have had since 1987. If we are stronger than last season, then why shouldn't we do better than last season?

So is it really down hill from here on, or are we going to see things get better with the glass being definitely half-full?

BB,

The despondency comes from being in a perfect position for pushing into the top 4 and not having any financial clout to do so.
No signings, thread bare squad ravaged by injury, with stagnation a real threat. There’s only so long a team will keep coming 5th or 6th before the best players want out, as we’ve seen with JL. If we had some money to spend with Moyes’ top targets coming throgh the door, the squad would be better, be together and be pushing on. Only now though, its not, they’re not, and I only hope they can. And your post reads like its come from Goodison HQ!

Fully agree. The season is only 3 days away from starting and most people are still finding lots to moan about. Thank heavens that alot of these people won’t be at Goodison on Sat.

As long as the proper fans continue to get behind the team (and that includes players who do, or don’t want to be here) we’ll be OK. With everyone fit we’ve got 14-15 players more than capable of getting us into the top 4. We’ve also got a bunch of promising youngsters waiting to make their mark. If we can manage to add a couple of extra players then we’ll be more than OK.

Cheers up everyone, in 3 days time the season is here again and we can get down to the ’Old Lady’ to cheer on the toffeemen. COYB.

Bloody hell, some positivity, i’m not sure you belong here Brian. I have been a long time reader of TW but only just started contributing (or at least thats what i call it). By and large I have to agree with you - its not all doom and gloom and yes I believe we do have as good a chance as in previous years to do well, although the squad is definitely too small in places.

Personally I don’t think City will gel and end up doing much this season - maybe next though, with a new manager. Spurs have made some improvements but nothing to be too scared of and Villa etc well we’ll fight them off as best we can as we have in the past.

Yes, it would be nice to practise what we preach and actually get new faces in early but hey wouldn’t that be boring (and would certainly leave a number of TW contributers with less to moan about, although I guess there’s always BK and Kirby to fall back on).

Yes, it would be nice (and important over the next season of two) to get new investment. I don’t think it is a disaster yet but in a season or two we might start getting left behind.

Yes, BK has not always delivered but I also worry about overseas’ investors that jump ship in future years and where they might leave us, so although he’s not perfect he ain’t all bad.

Lets just wait and see what happens, we will get some new faces (although maybe not all the ones people might like) and the boys will serve us well I know it. COYB!!

Kev, your key phrase was with everybody fit. As we are starting the season without Arteta, Yakubu, Jagielka and Anichebe plus fitness worries with Jo, Saha and Fellaini it doesn’t look too promising. On top of that I would say that the squad is already 3 or 4 players short at least, then we are really not in a good position for the kick off

Well let's see.... NTL, Kings Dock, Fortress Sports Fund, Kirkbydrome, Keith Wyness, "watch this space", "the cheque will be in the bank in the morning", the JJB fiasco, the disappearing money from transfer deals a la Andy Johnson and James McFadden, "this year we want to do our business early doors", £10 million up front for Rooney, and eight years searching for investment 24/7..... sorry but Kenwright and his stooges have been utter fuck-ups and they have been lucky that Moyes has pulled rabbits out of hats year on year.

Moyes can't continue in this manner and sooner or later Kenwright's luck will run out and maybe then people will wake up and realise what an incompetent arsehole he is. But by then we will be in some average shed in Kirkby that holds 40, 000 so we can make £6 million extra a year.

Missed opportunity is the main reason people are despondent - that feeling that if only we could find some investment / be a bit more ambitious, we could achieve even more.

Negativity for its own sake is destructive but a longing to improve is what drives most people forward. There’s nothing wrong in that.

I don’t see that drive in the club at the moment but I do see it at Villa, Spurs, City and Sunderland. That’s what disheartens me.

Andy Codling. Good negative post!
You have missed out all the positive bits. If I try hard enough I could probably come up with another 30 things that BK did wrong.

How about looking for some rays of light from BKs reign and things may start to look better.
Getting rid of Peter Johnson was probably the best thing BK did IMHO.
Hiring and keeping David Moyes was the next best.
Keeping the club in good (although not perfect) financial order is another plus.
BK actually supports the club he owns, which is something you can’t say for most of the PLs owners.
I could go on with positives for some time, but all I am trying to say is, try and see the other side of the coin, if you get what I mean. Its not all gloom.

Brian Baker, your reply in somewhat typical,I was wondering how long it would take for the "he got rid of Peter Johnson" quote. Yes how long ago was that, Brian and are we forever to be grateful? Furthermore, I also hold Kenwright in the same light as I do Johnson.

"He employed David Moyes" — that was on the advice of Walter Smith not Kenwright’s astute knowledge.

"Keeping the club in financial order" — We own nothing anymore, it's all been hocked away.

And who could forget the old favourite "He supports Everton, He’s one of us" — utter fucking crap that argument mate.

Just like to remind everyone about last year, at around the same time the majority of posters on here were saying for definate we will be out the top ten, no new players will be signed and Arteta, Cahill etc will be gone in January.

We finished fifth in the league, Carling Cup quarter finals and almost won the FA cup with "panic" buys like Saha and Fellaini contributing heavily to the team's performance.

I would love us to sign Elm and to have got Naughton and Delph, but I also know we are playing the game as it should be played in regard to not spending what we haven’t got for wages. Let's get behind the team and have faith Moyes and the boys will make us as proud as our day at Wembley COYB.

Brian, I actually admire your effort to be positive, but... Sorry I just don’t get it. Bill Kenwright has had the free ride of a lifetime. He is utterly out of his depth and the minor success of recent years is despite him,not because of him. With a different man in charge things really could have been better. What has Bill Kenwright achieved that any fan put is his position could not have? He has had the time of his life on the cheap and will cling to power while there continue to be supporters who feel that clapping along to Z--Cars with a tear in the eye is what all we need in a chairman.

The team is still a good team. But i want more isnt that what every fan wants or should we now just settle. The current side is not good enough to earn a CL spot with a couple of additions to the 1st team it could have been. We lack pace and power to compete with the top 4 sides. We will be in the mix between 5th and 8th and for a while i was delighted with that after years of being down the bottom of the league. But we need to push on accepting 5th place is not the Everton way and i cant beleive some fans are happy to do so.

Roy can you remind me about how Yakubu, Jagielka, Arteta and Anichebe were injured at the start of last season as you seem to think we are in exactly the same place we were last year?

Can you remind me of how many games the panic buy Saha played oh and by the way a free agent isn’t a bought player beyond wages which were even on a pay as you play basis; fifteen appearances with a return of eight goals isn’t bad but that’s nowhere near a full league season never mind including all cup competitions as we pissed them away pretty sharpish besides the FA Cup; Worthless and Uefa after the first games. So can you remind me just how the team are in exactly the same spot they were in last season?

An open letter to all the Bill Kenwright supporters out there. After reading your impassioned pleas for positivity, show me something to be positive about!

No new signings to speak of, excepting a couple of unknown quantities and nothing in the pipeline. You keep harping on about our last 4 seasons placings?!? Well here is the reallity lads: our last 4 placings count for fuck all, a new season is upon us and we are up a smelly creek making splashing noises as far as squad numbers are concerned.

The one thing you can be positively sure of is this. The lies and spin will continue as long as it is acceptable to be content with mediocrity... which you lot seem to be.

So come on: CONVERT ME! Show me what there is to be positive about GOING FORWARD, and make it fucking believeable, cos this boy's lost the will to live!

Andy you missed a trick here...this is one of those urban myths you hear about...Bk DID NOT get rid of Johnson. That phrase suggests Kenwright was some sort of royal blue warrior - who took offence at Johnson’s actions and punched his lights out before demanding he leave this town and never come back - rather than the truth - that he was happily sitting on Johnson’s board for years and simply took the opportunity to buy his shares when the premierleague and our fans finally forced Johnson out.

Got rid of him? FFS. Spin eh!

Dave Lynch:

My positive spin on the coming season, comes mainly from the positive play we saw in periods from games last season.

The squad has come on in leaps and bounds, sometimes taking a step backwards, from last seasons poor start. Some of our passages of play along the way has been sometimes quite special and would have the beating of any team in the league.

The teamwork, player understanding and football ethos that Moyes has worked hard to achieve is still present, as the base of players which it is based on are still with us from last season.

That was not the case at the start of last season, with so many new players in the squad and some key players being injured or not match fit. Jagielka was also only finding his feet at CB, and prone to mistakes. Saha was also injured and we had no Jo.

For all these reasons we are much better prepared to start this season, with confidence gained from a good win over Malaga.

I do take on board our need to increase our squad numbers, as we potentially have alot more games to play, but the base of the squad is there and in very good shape.

Ciarán McGlone: BK actually led the consortium that raised £20million to buy Peter Johnsons shares, so in that sense he got rid of him. Don’t forget at heart Johnson was a Liverpool fan, so his motive for being involved with Everton was always in question.
