The view from outside

Toffeeweb has been saturated with portents of doom & gloom this summer. Some fans predict melt-down, not sure why. Some predict that we've hit the ceiling and will now decline (slightly more measured). Some fans are so pissed off with the club and chairman that they want us to actually lose games (witness Tony Marsh's crass desire for a 5-0 whopping against Arsenal). Poor show, Tony.
Frustrations at the lack of new faces is understandable. But it can also shroud the view of what you already have. I think there's little true debate about the problems on Everton's right side. And special thanks to Guus Hiddink for revealing it to the world. But the idea that a team that has finished 5th, 5th, 6th and 4th in the last 5 years will simply implode and drift towards the Championship is unnecessarily juvenile and petulant.
I'm unsure about how we'll do this season. But then I approach every season with a sense of trepidation because I never EXPECT to do really well, but then find myself getting more confident as each season unfolds. We haven't had that good a pre-season, but frankly I don't care. Spurs went unbeaten last pre-season and even hammered Roma 5-0. They then took 2 pts from 8 games.
I can think of a number of reasons to be confident for this season, and certainly NOT to be despondent. Here are some of them:
Howard, Yobo, Jagielka, Baines, Pienaar, Rodwell, Neville, Arteta, Fellaini, Saha, Yakubu, Jo, (Lescott...), Moyes.
I think we have a good number of good players who would command places in any one of 15 teams in the EPL. And some would be more than comfortable in 4 other teams.
This is not to decry anyone the right to be frustrated at the lack of new faces. I would love Sessegnon here, he looks the total bollocks and a good RB. But the fact that they're not does not drive my thoughts towards despair, blame and anger. We all want better. But unless and until it arrives, don't underestimate or talk down what we have now. It's taken 5 years to assemble and it's not bad at all.
This article was inspired by Paddy Barclay, chief football writer of The Times and one of the most respected commentators on top level footy. Now as sure as night follows day there will be Evertonians coming on here thinking they know far more than a football journalist. That's sometimes true, depending on the journalist. But not, I think, in this case.
Here's what he thinks of Everton this coming season: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/football/premier_league/everton/article6792401.ece
Frankly, the idea that any Evertonian would find themselves rooting for Arsenal on Saturday is sick. This is our team & our club. We're here on ToffeeWeb wasting countless hours and days because we care. I hope, starting Saturday, we get back in line and shout the fucking roof off.

I used to go into seasons thinking, here goes another relegation battle then, but I’m more than ok this year. Yes we’ve haven’t got enough cover, we all know that (Moyesy included), yes we’ve got too many senior players on the sidelines, but to all you doom merchants, take a piece of paper and write down the names Cahill, Howard, Baines, Pienaar, Rodwell, Saha (and that just the ones available). Then write down a few corresponding names of 80% of Premiership clubs.
See which one’s jump out at you as a quality group?

I agree that it’s unlikely to happen but I’ll bet fans of Leeds, Newcastle and maybe even Portsmouth at the end of this season might venture to disagree. It can happen and it just takes one bad event to trigger a snowball sometimes. So while I can’t see Everton imploding just yet, it’s hardly a juvenile or petulant notion - just an opinion that some people hold.

I feel at times like I’ve been the only positive voice on here over the course of the summer, and at times I’ve walked away for days/weeks as I’ve been so frustrated.
The majority of my associates down here are Villa fans and are amazingly envious of Everton - both in terms of the club’s stability and the team. This coming from supporters of a club with a weathy benefactor and a good one to boot.
The core of players we have now is better than the core we took into the start of last season. We have 2/3 to come back into the side, and hopefully will make a couple of signings between now and the end of the month.
I’m positive about things, though as always it’s a constant worry as I’m so used to watching the shite served up through the 90s - thank god we’re a million miles removed from that, both on and off the pitch.
5 Posted 12/08/2009 at 16:59:41
It is just a worry that sooner or later Arteta and co will think its time to go and more importantly our manager too if some form of ambition is not shown.
6 Posted 12/08/2009 at 16:56:42
I for one don’t think we’ll implode at all... I think we’ll comfortably stay in the top ten while Moyes is here... but in all honesty it’s unlikely we’ll ever improve on fifth (now possibly sixth) — that’s were the despondency comes in. We may have positives, and plenty of them, but they’ll not suffice to improve us beyond where we are already at...
That’s the grim reality... I can’t say I’ll ever be happy about that, no matter how much you try to convince me that I should be.
As for your Times journalist... I think people who watch every single Everton game (home and away) throughout the season probably have the right to assume they have a more informed opinion of Everton than some journalist who probably only watches us against the crowd pullers.
I think his opening line proves that: "What will the mood be at Goodison at the start of the season — Very positive"
Couldn’t be more wrong.

The club are damned if they do and damned if they don’t in terms of making the fans aware of their interest in individual players, but one thing is for certain Everton drag their transfer dealings on and on and on and on...
The saving grace is there are three weeks left until the transfer deadline and I’m sure we’ll sign at least 3 players, hopefully we can hang on to Joleon (or at least get our replacement in first). Be great if we get Elm and the boy from Benin but it’s more likely we’ll get Sendoros, Lucas Neill and a.n.other.
We’ll all be up for it come Saturday — especially if Moyes can pull a rabbit out of the hat before the weekend — keep your heads up blues!

This summer is even more frustating than last year's as we should have learnt from last year's mistakes but we have not. Nil satis nisi optimum only the fans want that now. Kenwright will never deliver it and yet some are happy with being a decent side. I want more than that for Everton.
10 Posted 12/08/2009 at 18:15:24
I for one will go in with optimism, but I am also realistic enough to believe that beyond the Top 4, there is very little to differentiate the remaining 10 teams below. A bad streak could very well see us fighting in the Bottom half.
The more likely scenario, however, is that we stay in the Top 6 by the end of the season once again.
I look around us, and suddenly, none of the teams seem overwhelmigly superior - ManU do not seem to hold the same air of inevitable winners, for example.
All in all, a season to look forward to, and if we get off to a good start against Arsenal, who knows ?
11 Posted 12/08/2009 at 18:28:29
Would you care to explain how you can lay claim to such supreme arrogance Michael?
Patrick Barclay watches live games week in week out, throughout the EPL and elsewhere. He also meets with the movers and shakers within the game, including players and managers, has won many awards and is respected across the spectrum. He has been ploughing his trade in quality newspapers for decades.
The idea that you know more about Everton, nevermind any other facet of football, than this particular "journo" is risible. The fact that you not only believe this but deign to share it with us is amusing. But as you will see in my article, I expected a few and you were just the first.
I don’t share the same level of confidence as Paddy Barclay. But I have under-expected our achievements for the last 5 years and will be happy to do so again. I don’t make predictions, but if I did it would be to finish between 3rd and 8th and I’d target the inaugural Europa League.
12 Posted 12/08/2009 at 18:44:37
Arsenal
Man City
Sigma Olomouc, 1st leg
Burnley
Sigma Olomouc, 2nd leg
Wigan
So why don’t you lot write to the FA and UEFA and ask if we can start the league and Europa campaign in September, FFS six games, at what point do you accept we have no fucking depth in the squad for injuries and suspensions and what happened to a number of key players last season? Let me give you a clue, when do you expect Yakubu, Arteta and Jagielka to be fully fit and ready for this season? Who do you expect to play when a number of our fucking huge squad disappear to the AFCON? With the likes of Daffy Dodd contempt to fucking obscurity why don’t you jack in Everton and follow a pub side with no ambition whatsoever.

I think everyone here has told the television to fuck off with the opinions presented to us from the media.
I blame ESPN for my complete and total lack of respect for the opinions of pundits.
I actually posted that before I read the link and I found the article to be spot on and refreshing.
15 Posted 12/08/2009 at 19:19:42
It’s a shame that opposing fans and managers alike respect our boys more than some of our own.
The core of our side is strong, our defence is solid (even without Jagielka), we have one of the best forward line-ups in the country and our youth will get the chance to make us proud again.
Most of the Premier League can’t live with us now so how are they going to cope if we sign Sessegnon?
16 Posted 12/08/2009 at 19:35:51
I don’t think there are many that really think we’ll drift off towards the championship. I’ve said it many times in response to a lot of your posts Kirwin, all we want is progress. I think in this league now you need to spend some money just to stand still.
This summer has not been good enough by anyone’s standards. You can dress it up and put a positive spin on it all you like but it’s just not been good enough. It’s not about doom and gloom either, it’s just a feeling of sheer disappointment that the chairman has let us down again by not living up to his promises. After finishing 5th for two consecutive seasons and an appearance in a cup final, we all know just a few additions to the side would really enable us to kick on and challenge for 4th. That’s why people are so pissed off. we know we have a good team that is capable of challenging but we also know our squad is not good enough.
It just becomes more and more frustrating as each day passes and we don’t add to an already fragile squad. I completely understand why the likes of Marsh and McGloane are becoming so pissed off. By all means you don’t have to join in with their criticism of the club but to be so dismissive of it, I think, means you’ve not really grasped what an Evertonian is.
17 Posted 12/08/2009 at 19:26:53
I agree Tony is in a minority of 1 in wanting to see us lose. He is also very extreme in the way he makes his point although IMO most of them are valid.
I think the argument and the urgency of it is that we may never find ourselves so close to being a champions league club. And if we don't capitalise now the chance is lost. Depending on how football evolves in the next 5 to 10 years we may never have this chance again. Where EFC will find itself should this situation arise nobody knows however a drift toward the Championship is my belief. A belief I don't consider juvenile at all.
I agree that Barclay is a very good writer but he is paid to give his opinion on all things football. Most of us use our own time to research all things Everton. I wouldn't say one mans opinion is better than another but despite the ’movers and shakers’ he may speak to only a few will tell a journalist anything other than what they want him to know.
The beauty of football is that we all see something different, take the constant Hibbert and Osman debates for instance.
Short term I’m as happy as I’ve been going into a season since we signed Lescott, Howard and Johnson. I’d be happier if we hadn’t had all the Lescott/City nonsense going on but I fear this is how we will spend the next few summers, fending off interest for our best players from richer clubs.
COYB!!!
18 Posted 12/08/2009 at 22:21:17
Of course we’ll suffer injuries and suspensions but they wont all occur in the first six matches. I know you care, mate, but for gawd’s sake keep a sense of proportion.... you know darn well that players will be brought in by deadline time... so relax!
19 Posted 12/08/2009 at 22:37:56
20 Posted 12/08/2009 at 23:06:10
Please don't come back with they have not all been succesful because I trust Moyes with money and the stability of our club to move on and do better than other clubs.
21 Posted 12/08/2009 at 23:55:10
All blatantly bleeding obvious Richard, all known about for fucking months, the weak links in the squad known for months, the comical we will add players early bullshit followed by your annual reminder that the window doesn’t close until the end of August and me having to remind you and others that the season actually starts on the 15th of August and by the time the window closes this season unlike last when I had to remind you the same we have six games this season as opposed to the three last. Piss poor excuses that just aren’t good enough.
22 Posted 13/08/2009 at 09:10:36
Alan, top point, and always enjoy reading your posts. Keep the positivity coming! And for anyone who slates my acceptance of what we have - STOP! I don’t accept it, I expect more with what we have, as does the learned man who wrote the Times article. And I expect Moyes to continue his job of building this club. And I expect that in a few years, some rich bastard club will be bidding £20m for Mustafi/Peterlin/Orenuga or any one of a dozen or so talented youngsters we are now nurturing. And we’ll tell them to get fucked just the same as now.
Up the fucking Blues, let’s fucking pulverise Arsenal on Saturday. COME ONNNNNNNN!!!!
23 Posted 13/08/2009 at 10:46:41
If your so happy with the squad, how come Moyes isn’t? Or do you know better?
24 Posted 13/08/2009 at 11:01:36
Wow.....Perhaps you should let Ferguson, Benitez, Mourinho and Moyes know they’ve got this whole squad thing completely wrong..
..and since when is Peterlin a ’youngster’ who’s being nutured? He’s a desperate gamble. Nothing more.
25 Posted 13/08/2009 at 11:20:44
Stirring rallying call from the man who consistantly sneers at our attendances.
So will you be there ? . . . . . .
26 Posted 13/08/2009 at 11:54:42
Peterlin - desperate gamble?
So he’s not a youngster who Moyes has seen some promise in and signed for nothing on a minial wage?
I can’t see any desperation there myself. I also can’t see him figuring in the first team in the imminent future, but as he was free/cheap where’s the issue?
27 Posted 13/08/2009 at 13:11:54
Do you honestly think we’d be scouring collegiate football if we had a two bras farthings to rub together?
He’s not a kid...he’s 22 years old.

29 Posted 13/08/2009 at 15:47:32
So this was no sword welding "release hell" sort of call to arms. It was more a "Sorry I can't be with you chaps, but I’m helping the missus choose new curtains" sort of call to arms.
I’m sure everyone at GP on Saturday will bear your comments in mind...
30 Posted 14/08/2009 at 02:44:01
Excellent piece. I’ve been reading / lurking all summer and have admittedly been depressed a bit. But I’ve decided to cut the bile out of my diet and read only optimistic pieces while only skimming the diatribe to fire myself up for the new season.
Amazing if you do that. You then see:
a team that finished 5th last season with an absolute ton of injuries
a team that went to the FA Cup final knocking off the Shite, Manure, and Villa on the way
a team that has, to date, held all their top players
a team that boasts a very strong starting 11
a team whom everyone else from the outside admires greatly
a team with chemistry
a team that can bust the Top 4
I’m making my glass half full. Thank you for the pick-me-up.
Now let’s fucking tonk the shit out of Arsenal!

And I for one think I know more about football — especially Everton — than a nationaly syndicated footie journo.
