Moyes on SSN

Comments (37)

David Moyes came on Sky Sports News at lunchtime today. When asked about Mark Hughes's comment about speaking to those who can make decisions over Lescotts transfer.

Moyes said "...that no one from Manchester City, including Mark Hughes, has spoken to me, and I am the one who decides who comes and goes at Everton".

He said he is quite prepared to talk to Hughes, he just needs to pick up the phone. He also re-stated that Lescott is not for sale.

He went on to say that "Lescott is a valued player at Everton, and obviously valued more than he is at Manchester City."

"Lescott has the respect of all the players and staff and has behaved like a professional throughout. All Manchester City have done is twisted his head and distracted him, maybe that's what they inetended to do."

Brilliant stuff!

Joleon Lescott is correct in putting in a written transfer request. Indeed any sane footballer offered the same chance would do the same. But that request has been refused and that should be the end of it.

He didn’t sign for Everton for love, but he did renew his contract until the summer of 2012 on improved terms only last year. And that is the same kind of two way binding contract from which he benefited whilst recuperating at Wolves with a broken leg. Perhaps he should remember that during his injury laden season, despite facing Premier League relegation, Wolves did not try to renege on their contract with him although they were paying a player that they probably needed as much as any other player in their squad.

And whilst Lescott is a professional, like any footballer, he will still give 100% on the pitch. It is simply not correct to say that Everton should let him go because he will no longer be committed. True, he will be a challenge to Moyes in the season ahead, but that is simply an opportunity for Moyes to exercise his much vaunted management skills.

But give Lescott some credit, he has left the talking to Moyes and Hughes and should City end their interest, he is likely to knuckle down and pick up where he left off last season, albeit thinking of what might have been every now and then — just like every other human being on this planet does.

And what of Mark Hughes in all this? He is sounding more and more frustrated, finding it hard to believe that money can’t buy him every player that he wants. Is he already preparing his excuses for Manchester City’s failure to achieve this season? If the quote in ’Times Online’ today (14 August) is correct, it sounds as through he doesn’t know what it is to exert true independent management power – “we’re still trying to speak to the people that will ultimately make the decision”.

Moyes’s riposte quoted in that same publication clearly shows the gulf between the wannabe and the confident, accomplished, professional manager - "I hear that City think they are talking to people who make the decisions here, well that's me. I make the decisions, they have not talked to me and the player has been consistently told he is not for sale. He should get his head around that and get on with his career”. His last comment could be equally aimed at Lescott or Hughes and probably the latter!

If there was one supporter/fan of Everton FC that had any doubt about Moyes then this is surley evidence that the guy is without a doubt THE MAN!

"He (Hughes) said that he was looking to speak to the people who make the decisions. Well he knows who makes the decisions at Everton: it's me. Lescott has had his head twisted in all of this. I hear that City think they are talking to people who make the decisions here, well that's me.

"I make the decisions, they have not talked to me and the player has been consistently told he is not for sale. He should get his head around that and get on with his career."

One thing I will never do again is doubt our great manager David Moyes. An honourable and loyal man achieving (relatively) great things with the resources he has been granted.

I think its fairly clear that Lescott is not leaving. Why? Because David Moyes has a plan for our club. It may never come to fruition but he will not let anything get in the way of trying to achieve it. Lescott is central to that plan, a centre back, a left back, a goalscorer. He just can't be readily replaced. We'll all forgive him through time especially if he maintains his form to earn a world cup place. Lescott won't want to be known as spoilt brat either, he will undoubtedly maintain his professionalism and through time become settled again. But make no mistake.... HE'S GOING NOWHERE!!

Can't wait for tomorrow's game, can't wait for the season starting, can't wait to see who we inevitably sign before the deadline. All you naysayers out there should just "get your head round it". COME ON YOU BLUES!!

I don't know much about the rules in this regard, but how would Joleon Lescott know what City would be offering him? Are City allowed to talk to him without Everton's permission if he's contracted to us — or is it just that he's seen what is being bandied about in the media?

I cannot understand why people will be giving JL a warm reception. During our friendly I was proud to hear the chants and support from the crowd but his reaction during and after the game has been disgusting. That chanting made no impact on him whatsoever, I cannot remember him clapping us during the chants or after the game. The following Monday he put in a transfer request and has been pushing Moyes for a transfer ever since.

I say we give him shit (like a parent bollocking!) first game and then he gets on with his career. We should certainly not be giving him a warm welcome for wanting to get into bed with another club and showing no respect to the fans.

On the OS Moyes also said that "The offer was never big enough - we rate Joleon that highly, we think the world of him as a centre half and as a left back. He gives us two players in one. They paid £12m for Gareth Barry with one year left on his contract but Joleon has considerably more than that left".

He’s saying never say never, and leaving the door open. If the offer is big enough (in his eyes) then he could change his mind (and if Lescott’s future at the club comes untenable due to daft fans having a go etc). Everyone has their price right.

Also suggests that he hopes to get 1 or 2 new faces in within 48 hours - could be interesting. Any bets, suggestions anyone?

Gavin... The fans should get behind Lescott if he plays tomorrow to show support not only for him and the team, but also for the stance that David Moyes has taken.

Also, it sticks two fingers up to the arrogant Hughes, the gutter press and Man City. We can win tomorrow only if we have 100% support for the team.

I think that’s a fair point Nick.

There’s a point at which any player will be worth more to their club as pounds in the bank than they would be in minutes on the pitch. The problem for City is that their valuation of Lescott’s financial worth is well below Moyes’ assessment of his potential on-field contribution for Everton over the next three years.

Of course, as the money goes up or, more likely, the duration of Lescott’s contract diminishes, the threshold changes and the balance will start to swing in City’s favour. Next summer, for example, £20 million or thereabouts may well be more than enough to tempt Moyes into selling – as might an absolutely ludicrous bid in the next few weeks or in the January window.

A quick footnote to my comment above: I’ve just listened to Moyes’ interview on the BBC website:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/e/everton/8199370.stm

It’s a calm, rational response to City’s approach, which he compares very unfavourably with the professional way that Madrid and United conducted their business earlier in the summer.

Interestingly, he concedes that Lescott, like any player, has a price – but it looks like the Joleon actually has four and a half years left of his contract, rather than the three years I’d read elsewhere. I guess that Moyes is actually under even less pressure to sell than I realised.

Look a bit closer to the entire interview... Moyes suggests he will decide and City have not offered enough. I read that as, if they spoke with him and offered more, then negotiations start.... Moyes never said "Lescott is going nowhere" once — he says he values him higher and ’wants’ him to stay........

DM is reminding me of Alex Ferguson every time I see him lately. No wonder the Manure board like him.

Reports suggest that we are after Stephen Taylor from Geordie land. If true (I know probably not), is he coming instead of JL or is he an extra defender or is he coming to play RB?

Good luck against the Arse, Moysey — it's about time somone stood up the money teams.

I also saw the interview of SSN; Moyes was certainly getting his point across to Man City, Joleon lescott and more importantly to Billy-Boy, saying he is in charge and that won't change. Now I think if BK does try and sell him over Moyes’s head, he will walk — that would be a disaster.

By no means lets show our support for Moyes but no way should we do it to Lescott... why does he deserve our support?

I say lets sing Moyes and Everton all game but tell Lescott we are not happy with his attitude and behaviour.

15   Posted 14/08/2009 at 19:46:20

What more can Moyes do other than say it verrrrrrry slowwwwwly so that Mark Hughes and those other clowns at shitteh can comprehend?

We hold all the aces and Lescott shouldn't be going anywhere... if he does, Moyes WILL walk and lots of Blues will follow I reckon.

16   Posted 14/08/2009 at 19:57:21

Well I reckon if Lescott wants to leave to double his wages, then let him go.

How many of us wouldn’t leave our current employers and go elsewhere for double the cash... I can tell ya for one that if someone offered me double-the-money, then I’d be tempted in to talking to them.

If he doesn’t want to play for Everton then I’ll drive him to Eastlands myself.... £30m will do and we can strengthen the squad in other areas once we’ve cashed-in.....

Nowt worse than a player who doesn’t want to stay IMO.....

17   Posted 14/08/2009 at 20:08:42

The problem is Andy, City aren’t offering £30 million. They’ve happily forked out way too much for Tevez, Adebayor, Barry and Toure and they were willing to pay £40 million for Terry. For some reason they’re trying to pay fuck all for an international defender who excels in 2 positions and can score 10+ goals a season. City are totally taking the piss.

I think now even if City came in with £35 million, Moyes would tell them to fuck off purely because of the way Hughes has behaved over the whole thing.

Moyes’s press conference was a stroke of pure genius. It will work to galvanise the fans after a shit summer. I fucking cannot wait until tomorrow now.

The man’s a gem; he’s got his faults but I trust him with our club. I’ve had the pleasure of speaking to him and many other proper football people over the years...he’s up there for intregrity with Bobby Robson, Ray Wilson, Joe Mercer and the like.

Unbelievable stuff from Moysie — what a legend. They now know their offer would have to blow us out of the water if they want Lescott, including compensation for all the upset and misery and shite they have caused us all, manager, players, fans alike. Minimum £30m + player(s).

Don’t boo Lescott tomorrow, a dignified silence will do until we see what happens.

It’s enough to make your heart go ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... we don’t care...

"Even if City came in with £35M, Moyes would tell them to fuck off purely because of the way Hughes has behaved over the whole thing"

I very much doubt it.

Listen (or read) what it is Moyes says. He says City have not bid enough. He says he has rejected previous offers becasue they are not enough. He says he values Lescott at more than they are offering. He says he IS willing to speak to Mark Hughes. He does not say I will never sell at any price. I honestly think people are setting themselves up for a crushing.

If Lescott does now leave for £22M+ many people will call Moyes a liar, traitor, same old bull coming from the club, treating fans like idiots etc etc

My opinion is that it is part of the game. State that what is on offer is not going to be accepted and the price is pushed up. Interesting how City (despite being linked) have not put bids in for any other defenders, Upson, Disten etc.

Also, Man U, Real Madrid and respect, transfer market, used in the same sentance without the words ’complete lack of’. He is surely losing his marbles.

But hey, actual football starts tomorrow. You know that stuff involving the ball and the grass and the people running around. It's great fun if you watch it and don't read the Mirror/Sun/Start...

From this website recently (the absolute lack of discussion of the coming season (actual football) without the obvious, where are our new players and whose fault is it... if I read one more article on Elm (what now, he was seen buying blue underwear and this is a show of allegiance that seems to prove my gut feeling which has never been wrong is right that he will sign sometime in the next week, maybe in the week after that...), or the latest Roumer Mill bloke... Sessegwhateverhis name is. Never heard of him, no-one on this site has EVER mentioned him before, but now all of sudden everyone is saying, iI think we should sign him. Arghhh, I know iI've started rambling, but hey.

I know its inevitable but I just read this on sport.co.uk and it made me smile:

"Mark Hughes has been installed by bookies as the favourite for the sack despite his big-money purchases and newfound club confidence. Portsmouth’s Paul Hart and Hull’s Phil Brown are the next two names on the list."

You know what I can’t wait for the Man City game in January at Goodison, even though I probably can’t be there.

Also, the midweek (TBC) away match next week with all this going on is making me seriously think about burning the credit card on a Corporate Executive seat as near as possible to the players lounge with my hidden video camera for when Moyes and Hughes just fucking go for it fisticuffs in the players lounge and the shit hits the fan.

The question is, by Wednesday, who with JL be fighting for?

I will retire on selling the video rights to Sky (hock_toop) and buy a Box at Goodison next to big DM by the enclosure to remind him every home game of his crackin’ notorious "Glasgow kiss" on MH’s brow. Can’t wait, just can’t wait for the season to start now. I reckon with all this the players are really fucking riled and will show that they mean by "the first tackle matters". Tony Marsh, tell them to get stuck right in there and the French won’t know what’s hit them.

By the way, is the game on Sky (hock_toop) on Saturday as they are already advertising the Sunday matches.

Moyes is a legend. He’s out-smarted wasp chewing Sir Alex, FSW and Hughes this past year in front of the media. Mark Hughes is quickly looking like a complete prat just like when Walter Smith had him ’holding the ball up’. One of the worst signings we ever made.

Dear Mark Hughes,
Move on with your business of sucking up to the shiek. When he gets tired of you, he will move on as well. The reason that Hughes won’t call Moyes is he hasn’t the, well, how do I say this appropriately? — he doesn’t require as much "support" as our Moysie. Go Everton!

Brilliant reposte by Moyes. Shiteh looked liked proper naive dicks with their pursuit of Kaka... but this has been awful. I agree that when you read between the lines Moyes is not saying Lescott is not going at any price, but that would just be stupid. Which is exactly what he’s made Hughes look.

Brilliant!

Integrity. Integrity. Integrity. These should be the three (or one) basic ingredients for success in a noble environment. Whatever you think of David Moyes and his footballing brain, his defensively-minded approach, his dour Scottish mindset — he's OURS!

My best mate's a Red. MY second best mate's a red Manc. They both covet Moyes. One of them might get him...... eventually. But they both accept that they haven't got him already, for one reason only: he doesn't want to leave Everton until he has brought us GLORY! He may never be able to do this, but it doesn't stop him trying everything he has learnt in his managerial life, to bring it to us! Including trying to keep Joleon Lescott at Everton.

We don't have the most grandiose ground in the EPL. We don't have the biggest budget in the EPL. We don't have the biggest squad in the EPL. But we do have the best supporters. We do have the greatest history. And we have the manager with the most manifest integrity in the world of football management. If Joleon leaves, he will be making a huge sacifice!

With Jô performing so well in pre-season and looking good for the season ahead... and with relations between Everton and City breaking down by the minute over the Lescott fiasco, the following thought occurred to me: Let's say Jô starts the season well and let's say he has scored 8-10 goals by Christmas — what is to stop City recalling him simply to disrupt Everton's season even further?
Alan Clarke
30   Posted 15/08/2009 at 10:44:09

I expect there’s something in the contract saying he’s ours for the season, Gerry.

Fran, read the whole interview with Moyes. He says he’s "disgusted" with City and they’ve disrupted the club during pre-season. It hardly sounds like a man willing to do business. The Guardian this morning agree with my take on it - Moyes is totally unwilling to do business with City because of the way they’ve behaved.

Moyes is a man of principal and he has also said he makes the decisions. He has stated very strongly all along that Lescott is not for sale, not that he is for sale at the right price, just that he’s not for sale. The £30 million price tag quoted in the press is not a quote from Moyes. He’s always maintained the same line that no-one is leaving. So I think it’s absolute crap now to suggest Moyes would be willing to do business with City. Change out of your negative mindset on this one before kick off today.

We need to bring this debate to an end. I’m fed up with us portraying ourselves as the poor relations being bullied by the rich boys from the other end of the East Lancs raoad.
Every player ’has his price’.
Tell City that we want £20m plus Jo, or £26m, or £35m, or whatever figure we think fit. Inform City that the deal is non-negotiable and they have 48 hours to accept or decline.
Tell Lescott we are willing to let him go if the price is right.
Tell the media (without figures) that we have contacted City with a non-negotiable proposal that they have 48 hours to reply to.
City wil then either tell us we’re taking the piss, in which case we inform Lescott that when ’push came to shove’ City were not prepared to meet our offer, or City accept our offer.
This would then leave us to find another Centre Back for under £10m (Senderos £5m?, Taylor £7m?, Cahill £8m? etc, etc.) with another £12m - £20m to strengthen our squad with one or two quality players.
I know which option I would want City to take, but at least this ’standoff’ would come to an end.

Proud of you David. It’s all very simple really:-

Moyes - Class act

Hughes - No class whatsoever, floundering out of his depth and puts his foot in his mouth every time he opens it. Probably could have had Lescott weeks ago if they’d gone about it the right way at the right time with the right money.

Last word PLEASE lets show what a class act we fans are by NOT booing Lescott. The lads only done what we’d all probably do, so if he’s staying make him feel wanted and show the City chancers they can’t disrupt us , giving Lescott stick plays right into their hands.

Just been reading a few comments on Man City forums to see how they are looking at the JL saga. Most seem outraged that DM will not sell one of our players to them. "How dare we refuse to sell to a much more successful club," they seem to think they have already won the Prem and the Champions League and everyone should bow to their greater finances and just give them what they want off the pitch as well as on it.

Go fuck yourselves you arrogant gang of Manc wankers. Last week I was under the opinion that we should let JL go but today I will cheer his every touch and hope DM keeps to his word just to fuck them off. Mark Hughes looks like a scared child he knows his days are numbered and that's before a ball has been kicked in anger.

Let's get behind JL and all the boys and hope Citeeh get relegated. God I feel so much better after that rant.

Good on you Moysey, if you let him go WITHOUT signing any new players before the deadline, there will be a queue of players knocking on your door next day. He has got a good contract in a great club, tell him to have a bit of patience and some faith in our club. We are going places, we know where we need strengthening and that will happen. COYB, good luck tomorrow!

Hughes on his way to becoming Public Enemy No1 at Goodison. He says he can understand Moyes being unhappy "when a big club wants your best player".... Miaow!

Despite today's abysmal capitulation, I still want Lescott to stay. Moreover, even if they're playing the RS, I hope City get stuffed by each team they face this season just to see Sparkeh's face.
