Wolves Payoff?

Comments (8)

Just a thought. Wolves are entitled to some "sell on" money if and when Lescott takes the petro-dollars, how is this affected by any player exchange deals?

Just suppose we settle for £20 million plus Jo, Dunne, Petrov or any combinations thereof. Do Wolves get there share based only on the cash element or also on the player exchanges based on some agreed valuation of the players? And if this is the case what's to stop EFC insisting City place a low valuation on any exchange players to minimise what we have to pass onto Wolves.

Seems like a minefield to me.

I haven’t seen one single bit of official confirmation from either Wolves or Everton that a sell-on clause exists...

All the info on it so far has been hearsay...anybody got anything solid?

Ciaran — I’m now ’exciled’ in the ’Black Country’ so surrounded by Wolves fans & they are all expecting a payout, should JL be sold. I’ve pressed a couple of their season ticket holders on this but can’t get a definite answer on what the terms are.

Howard — I bet they hadn’t thought of that but no doubt will have some over paid lawyer looking at that should it occur, such is the money orientated state of the modern game.

Maybe you could press them on where they’re getting their info from Marc...

Even the original press on Lescott to Everton makes no mention of any sell-on clause.

If there is a sell-on clause it will be a percentage of profit from sale I would imagine, and any players exchanged wouldn’t come into the equation.

I think that’s right — it’s the money and not the players that are taken into account — and it will probably be structured the same way as the Rooney "best deal I could" deal was constructed — i.e. a percentage of any fee received over the initial fee paid (but without the ridiculous "£1M if United win the Champs League, £500k if they win the FA Cup, £3.80 if they win the Boat Race and Rooney rides a Grand National winner" clauses).

I think this question was asked on The People’s Forum last week and someone came up with an example from a few years ago where a cash & players deal was struck (or maybe even just players) and the selling club valued one of the players as making up 1p of the deal, just so they didn’t have to pay a sell-on clause!

I’m still not convinced Lescott will go in this transfer window anyway — it may well all depend on Thursday’s result.

This will simply depend on what is in the contract if indeed this famous sell-on clause exists.
