Electronic Hoarding Misuse

Comments (16)

This may seem like a stupid and petty point, but why are our electronic advertising hoardings never showing anything other than our own brand?

On Saturday they constantly showed the away kit, season ticket sales, Chang & a welcome for ESPN.

Surely they should be put to a more profitable use like what's seen at the Emirates and partner ourselves closely with 5 or 6 companies who offer a real return on that valuable advertising space.

That would be expecting a bit too much commercial/business acumen from our board, Andy...

we’re run by a "Theatre Impresario" FFS!

Commercial sensitivity/... You might find out what the marketing people do at Everton. Who shouted Outsource?

Still 10p a minute to listen to Z-Cars when you phone the club. Genius hey!

For the same reason we are not on any TV station in Europe this Thursday.

I think that, due to how badly it is run, we do not have a company paying us to have any advertisements on there.

Yeah — let’s stop this self-publicising to a world-wide audience, stop giving our main sponsors light of day, and stop trying to market our own products to push up sales — great idea.

Yours should win the award for the most stupid post of the month.

I don’t think there’s an award for that Steve...

If there is, I want it back dating as I’m sure that I’m due a few :-)

Re-advertising... I’m no marketing guru, but I’m sure getting "external" sponsors to advertise would be more lucrative.

Steve C, actually it is a very good point. Surely everyone at Goodison is either an away fan, and therefore would never buy Everton Merchandise, or is a Toffee, and doesn’t need encouragement to buy Everton merchandise, therefore using up valuable advertising space on the away strip is a waste of an income stream. Almost as stupid as advertining Football Manager on ToffeeWeb.

I can clear this one up for you if you don't mind chaps. I work for the company that provide the LED screens in the corners of the stadium and the matchday services in terms of the production of images onto the screens.

We also deal in digital perimeter advertising; however, we do not cover Everton. The reason being is that there are two models in terms of digital perimeter supply. The first being sell the hardware to the club and let the club make the most of the advertising capabilities by selling space to local, national and international businesses (this is the model that we work on).

The second is a company (OMM sport) similar to ours will provide the hardware free of charge rather than sell it but they then manage the advertising content and keep the income from it rather than give it to the club. So whilst they get a free perimeter system, they do not get the income generated from the hoardings.

The club took the stance that they wanted a free system rather than the advantages of being able to make income from it. As you can imagine however, the advertising and media sales market place has crashed and little is being spent at stadia across the world and therefore he companies that suply this kit and manage the advertising sales as their income streams are starting to struggle as they are not getting the required incoming finance and therefore we find ourselves in this predicament.

To James Cadwaladr :

Are you saying that Everton have definitely done this? i.e. opted for a freebie system which means that they don’t get any revenue from the advertising?
Doesn’t that mean they will have to pay to advertise their own products on it as well?

Sounds like "The Everton Way" to me...

Yes, Everton have taken the option of receiving a free system and having a company manage everything for them. I cannot say that they don't get any kickback from the advertising as I am not privy to the commercial deal but it will be negligible. The club won't have to pay for their own advertising as that will have been a stipulation during the tender process.

In the current climate, it is not such a bad thing to have that as at least they haven't had the investment costs initially — as they would have had by using us. However, if they had then at least the commercial team could have tired to make some dough.

Similar deal in place with Sodexho wherby we make very little off matchday refreshment profits. We are merely paid a licence fee by Sodexho to allow them to manage our bars etc.

James, what do you mean EFC ’get the system’ — what is the point of having the system if the club cannot make money from it? Is this some sort of deal where in 10 years time the knackered out equipment will be owned by EFC?

I totally agree with you - it is a stupid and petty point.

I want to see some football, not digitalised elephants running around.

It’s tacky, degrading and makes my head hurt.

Bring back the old letters with the half time scores.

I like to look at the adverts around other grounds. Massive companies like Audi/ Barclays etc... We have Joe's corner shop or Wang's chippy at Goodison.

We should get an image of a blue kit running the length of the board so it will look like we have a winger...

BK — don't you dare steal my idea!

All very well, Trevor. But what about when one of our players attempts to pass to the "winger"? Yes, I know, pass — just as if!
