A Proper Evertonian?
Comments (52)
I keep learning something new every time I log on to ToffeeWeb. In fact I am being educated by other Everton supporters on how to be a Good Evertonian.
Those of you out there who have yet to understand what it takes, here are some tips:
- Never ever be critical of the manager the one and only David Moyes. This guy is untouchable and to even dare
question his ability is a hanging offence. Leave well alone and you will be alright. Sing "He's got Red Hair and We Don't Care" and you are defo in with the boys. - The Chairman Bill Kenwright is another untouchable. No matter what Billy Boy does or says or no matter how many times he fucks you over, don't say a word. Suck it up and be thankfull
Peter Joihnson is no longer around. Forget all about the Kings Dock arena and embrace the Tescodome.
More Good Evertonian points earned here. - Style of football being played for 8 years? Another touchy subject and one left best alone as you could be seen as "negative". Just accept that for professional footballers to be able to trap or pass a ball, it takes money. Yes, that's right — only players who cost a fortune know how to play there chosen profession properly. Clubs like Everton cannot expect to play decent footy any more and it's no fault of the manager. Passing and crossing to team mates is only for the rich and famous. Go along with this and you are starting to get it...
- Put all massive tonkings to the back of your mind and put them down as blips. 7-0 or 6-1 maulings — they are no cause for concern as David Moyes is the brightest young manager in the game and will get it right eventually. I mean Arsenal put 6 past all the minnows dont they? Yes, it's only the likes of big clubs like Hull City who dare take Arsenal on at their own game and beat them.
- Always, always live of the past and say things like, "We finished 5th twice and made it to a Cup Final" when trying to justify your arguements for meekly accepting the status quo. All though winning a final would be nice, it's the taking part that counts nowadays... Just like a school Sports Day for kiddies.
- Keep convincing yourself that all is well and as long as we have Moyes we will never struggle to compete. Moyes is a genius, you see, and I have only just started to realise it. Beating the big 4 once in a while doesn't matter anymore. We are Best of the Rest... so give it a rest.
- Sing "If You Know Your History" everywhere you go and even sing it in the direction of Man Utd and Liverpool fans. This won't make them laugh out loud but will make them realise what a fantastic history we have compared to their crappy ones.
- When put under pressure to come up with good reasons why Kenwright and Moyes are doing good jobs, refer back to
Walter Smith and say it's better than his regime by miles. Say stuff like "We are no longer relegation fodder and have moved on," — even though Osman and Hibbert where part of Smith's set-up and are still playing for Moyes every week. - Forget Smith just won another title in Scotland in his first full season back, to add to his other thousand trophies, and just keep faith in "Moyes the Winner".
- Sing "Shit ground, no fans whereever you go to watch the Blues.
Its really funny, almost as funny as "Get your Tits out for the lads." Even though Goodison Park is a dump we can still slaughter little clubs for having plastic Cowsheds because our board would never consider such a thing for us would they? - Make up rumours about Liverpool players and thier wives and sing about it at Derby games. It's dead funny honest. Say stuff like "Torres is gay and was caught in bed with Sol Campbell by his cleaner." It's a real hoot.
- Blame the Refs for all our problems and still go on about Collina robbing us at Villarreal. I know I still do and it does me no harm. You see, Refs are the antichrist and it was Clattenburg's fault we lost that match a Goodison a few seasons ago. Nothing to do with poor game plans. No, Clattenburg bevies with Carragher and Gerrard you see
and must be bent.
Now, once you get the hang of the requirements, you will be able to say you're a proper Evertonian — unlike me, who is seen as a Kopite. I wish I could learn this Evertonian thingy and get accepted... I really do.
I have though got some tips of my own that might stand you in good stead for the future. They might seem a little silly but they can't be any more silly than those above.
- Never cop off with a bird who drinks pints of Lager and has an Indian ink tatoo on her arm that says Wrexham Skins. You will regret it in the morning... Don't ask???
- Never marry or date a bird who thinks she likes footy. It must be a real ball-breaker sitting through a game with your chick and she says things like "Arteta's fit, isn't he?", "OOH look at the arse on Victor".
- Even worse is going the Wilmslow after the match and she is with you. All you want to do is fart, sing, drink, burp and be one of the lads but you have got the missus saying, "Make that your last one, me Lado, X-Factor is on at 7 and we're going home."
- Never model your hairstyle on your favourite players. The Perm / Mullet combo was a real killer back in the 1980s and I tried it I looked a right twat. Evern after adding those tight shorts I still didn't look like Graeme Sharp.
I know its hard being an Evertonian but being a proper one is even harder. No matter how much time and money you put in there are so many things you need to learn.... Just like David Moyes, it appears I am still learning how to get it right.
Please someone tell me when will I earn my stripes? I can't take not being on of the lads any more... I just want to be loved, that's all.

I actually think you may have hit the nail on the head. Why do us Evertonians keep coming back for more and more punishment?
Quite frankly it would be easier to be a red sometimes. Or it might the hope that, one day, in our lifetime, glory wll come our way. Attractive passing football by an Everton team would be heaven.
3 Posted 18/08/2009 at 17:31:50
I’m also glad you mentioned the much maligned Walter Smith. He took a Rangers side, which would struggle in League One, to the Uefa Cup Final. To praise Moyes by damning Smith is ludicrous. Moyes is Smith with more money to spend.
Prepare to get some stick, Tony.

Also it’s amusing that whilst other managers and pretty much everyone who has anything to do with football believes what Moyes has achieved (including a gradual improvement of the style of play) is remarkable. Hiddink and a very small number of other managers may have been able to match his feats but as you can see from Everton’s record, many, many managers have achieve far LESS with far MORE at their disposal, and NONE (Yes including Wenger) have achived more with less. In other words, so far Moyes has done something that other managers in the 21st Century have not.
But hey he should have won 7 FA cups by now eh? Let’s ignore the fact that you pick several combinations of just 3 Chelsea players and they would have added up to more than the cost of Moyes’s entire squad.
Sack Moyes now. Of course he can be citicised but it should always be fair and proportionate. Say he could have left the weakened Fellaini on the bench or out of the squad and put Rodwell on? Sure but he knows more than we do and crucifying people for achieving more than 99% of other people couldn’t is as I said, disingenuous, and a little bitter.

By the way, I like the way you tell us not to live in the past when talking about finishing 5th and getting to a final. But bang on about us loosing 7-0 and Kings Dock etc. Make up your mind!
Also no-one says you can't criticise Moyes but you claim he doesn't have a clue which is very different (even though a few weeks ago you claimed the boards failure to back him would see the best thing at Everton walk). Again, make up your mind.
He is a very good manager — that's why he is managing a top 5 team in the Premier League... and you are just standing at the side telling him how to do his job.
11 Posted 18/08/2009 at 18:32:06
No manager (in the Prem) has achieved the same results with a comparable team, style or no style.
12 Posted 18/08/2009 at 18:51:42
Also Everton’s 2nd leg is on Five next week.
13 Posted 18/08/2009 at 18:49:36
Moyes is an ok manager, but he lacks tactical nous and imagination. He reacts to a situation after it has happened, rather than planning beforehand to prevent it from happening. Look at the FA Cup Final. I am not trying to be clever after the event, but I would have started Jacobsen for Hibbert. I would also have found time somewhere in the game for Rodwell, but I do accept that we would still probably have lost anyway.
He is slow to change things when it is obvious a certain area needs attention during a game. He is reactive rather than proactive. His substitutions are usually too little, too late.
Moyes is a defensive minded man who would rather try to stop the other side from winning, rather than to try to win the game himself, in other words he lacks boldness. Take a leaf out of Brian Cloughs book, and don't give a monkeys about them, let them worry about you. At least I have a good feeling about Thursday night's game — I think we just might hold them to a nil-nil.

15 Posted 18/08/2009 at 19:19:37
The comparison with Hull having a go at Chelsea is very relevant. When the hell do we have a go at the bigger sides, try 4-4-2 etc? The Cup Final was a case in point — dire, attritional football with the hope that on the percentages rule we may get a chance from a set piece or a hoof ball knocked on.
I’ve often felt that finishing best of the rest in the last two seasons has been more to do with the shortcomings of other sides which on early indications won’t be the case this season.
Moyes, due to his stubbornness is also the last person to admit change is necessary when to everyone else it is glaringly bloody obvious (how long did it take him to drop Weir; how long is it going to take him to can Hibbert & Osman; how long is it going to take to realise that playing Cahill in the centre of midfield renders him useless?).
God only knows how you can go into a new season thinking that a dire, conservative approach, all perspiration and no inspiration + no squad strengthening will somehow cut it and on top of this exerting your will over a disgruntled player who doesn’t want to play for you. Everybody knows that in the present day, players have the power and the clubs sod all.
I think the team morale and fighting spirit of recent seasons has disguised some serious home truths, i.e. we seriously lack quality and we seriously lack a forward thinking and progressive managment ethos and that extends to tactics, squad selection, pre-season preparations (whatever the fuck they are) and approach to transfers.
It’s no wonder I and most of the Evertonians I know have had most of the life blood drained out of them. The sad truth is that I have hardly any emotion left and this pre-season has passed with little surprise.
We are unfortunately a dinosaur club in many respects that needs dragging into the modern footballing world and sadly I don’t hold out any hope it will happen anytime soon.

Tony, if you are reading this, change the record mate. And (attempted) humour doesn't suit you - stick with the vitriolic bile.

18 Posted 18/08/2009 at 20:09:06
If "percentage football" were that easy it's odd nobody else uses it to finish 5th or 6th every year (4th once) and make a Cup final. Aren’t a huge amount of managers fired every year? You’d think one of them would give it a shot if it’s so bloody easy.
I would accept the criticism of Moyes if one of you lot would, for once, include some sort of acknowledgment of how, while you may not like the style, it’s odd how nobody has done better than him (aside from the four teams who are essentially in another league).
19 Posted 18/08/2009 at 20:33:54
"The place looks huge when you are out there in the middle and I was thinking to myself, How can we call this place a dump? — It’s a shrine to me! "This is the Mecca of football", I was shouting, "Do you know how lucky I am right now? Ha Ha!" What a scream.... It must be an amazing feeling playing in front of so much noise, passion and history as a player at Everton FC. What lucky bastards they are."
Or have I misunderstood your rapier-like wit.
20 Posted 18/08/2009 at 20:50:26
Time has not been kind on the Old Lady, in this era of WiFi’ed expansive seating and Recaro dugouts etc etc etc, and it's unquestionable that for myriad reasons a club with the heritage of Everton needs to move with the times, but this point more than anything else in your diatribe needed a retort.
OK, so Woodison (as her detractors love to name her) has her big faults such as obstructed views and nowhere for Bill’s luvvies to eat their prawn sandwiches, but I for one am FAR more concerned at the prospect of the soulless Reebok Mk II in Kirkby that has been allowed exclusivity on the planning table. (For anyone who’s never been to a match at Bolton, go, please - you will see the future.... and it's not a cheery sight.)
Imperfect for so many reasons, and probably sneered at by many opposition supporters — (largely non-matchgoing I reckon, as you only need to remind yourself of how many managers like Wenger and Ferguson have admitted the intimidating presence ol’ Woody still possesses) — the ground seems such an easy target.
But like so many, I and past generations of my family have felt the highs and lows of following this great club at Goodison.
For it to be labelled so casually, without any of the reasoning I have made such a rambling attempt at — well then I’m beginning to understand why you feel so often the recipient of vilification. Poor show.
21 Posted 18/08/2009 at 21:20:05
I’d like to see this best of the rest shite put to bed. 1st is 1st and anywhere else is nowhere. And that's what we should aspire to, no matter how long it takes to get there.
22 Posted 18/08/2009 at 21:48:01
It is amazing how silent you are when we go on winning runs and play good flowing football as we did many times last year and the year before.
I do think that you are one of those individuals that actually takes comfort when we struggle.
23 Posted 18/08/2009 at 21:46:13
Wilmslow is in Chesire last time I looked. But hey, why let the facts get in the way of another pile of inane drivel?
24 Posted 18/08/2009 at 22:04:04
John Barnes came second in that league and Mowbry will either win it or come second too. Not really comparable is it?
Strachan, the man who took a few clubs down won it four times on the bounce didn’t he? Not a great example there, Tony.

What was the excuse when Arsenal hammered us 7-0? Lescott wasn’t there then. Mind you Moyes had just wasted £6m on the pointless and useless Beattie for that one. And this time round we were playing the pointless and useless €15m Fellaini.
No more runs into the box, Tim because we’ve got Fellaini to do that now. You can just work on your passing with Phil Neville. And if you need a get out ball just give it to Ozzie who’ll fly down the wing. Does anyone really need to ask who could do better than Moyes. It’s beyond bizarre!
29 Posted 18/08/2009 at 23:26:27
The excuse for the 7-0 game was that most of the players were still in Baby Blue in the wee hours of the morning after Arsenal beat Liverpool to secure 4th place for us.

Your comments regarding Walter Smith have also proved that if anyone says black you will without doubt say white in return.
32 Posted 18/08/2009 at 23:17:32
This is the frustration really Mick, and that is that Tony can and does raise valid points but they unfortunately get sandwiched between the same comments that he has produced in virtually every post over the last 12 months.
We all know by now what Tony thinks of Osman, Hibbert, Moyes and Kenwright. We all know that he would rather eat a shit butty than offer any form of praise, even if Osman or Hibbert had played a blinder. Christ, Tony we know your feelings about these four individuals by now.
I firmly believe that your posts are spawned from both passion and frustration but you do come across as being an habitual whinger who sees absolutely nothing positive in supporting EFC, and I personally don’t doubt that of you for one minute.
33 Posted 18/08/2009 at 23:34:21
Now on Saturday we had a great oppurtunity to show the board how we really feel about them but all we did was get up and walk out and chants of Everton, Everton... what should have happened was chants of KENWRIGHT OUT & SACK THE BOARD!!!
But too many of us are quite happy for things to plod along with what is happening at our great club and lines of look were we where 8 years ago and who can do a better job? Would you like Johnson to still be in charge?
Well you know what I don’t give a shit about what’s happened in the past, I only care about the here and now and right now we are being lied to by the board, Moyes is too damn negative, hoofball is ever present, we still have no pace no width and no creativity in midfield. Nothing changes from summer to summer so enough is enough.
KENWRIGHT OUT!!!!
SACK THE BOARD!!!!

Totally agree with Tony, I am fed up of "It's a Grand Old Team to play for" you tell that because of the queue of players waiting to come in during the window.
"If you know your history" — yes I do, but to be honest I dont really give a fuck, only interested in the now and the future.
This season is going to be long, we are not the best of the rest anymore and to be honest you win the league or you don't, who cares?
Thank god we have Portsmouth, Burnley, Wolves, Birmingham, Blackburn, Hull and Bolton who look worse than us.
38 Posted 19/08/2009 at 03:47:38
The relegation leader! The guy’s shite. End of.
BTW — he lost the Uefa Cup final in case you didn’t hear.
Wearing a Celtic jersey while I type this, but yours in all things Blue.
EFC till I die, Celtic my mistress... OHHHH, Walter is shite, Walter is shite...
39 Posted 19/08/2009 at 04:55:28
However... the slagging of our esteemed manager has to stop. He’s the man, he bleeds Blue and I defy anyone to come up with a better alternative than him. Phil Brown? Fat Sam? O’Leary? Peter fucken Reid? Besides, who else would be masocistic enough to want to take on the EFC hotseat.
COYB!!!!!!
40 Posted 19/08/2009 at 07:49:22
Then reading an annoying mailbox thread from an Evertonian who I feel needs to convert to another religion. Tony, most of us have not chosen to be Evertonians, we are born into this goddamn sect — a sect that takes our money and delivers empty promises to us. There are 100s of things wrong with Everton that you haven’t mentioned, but we are Evertonians, we don’t support the manager, chairman or even Cahill. We support Everton and everything that comes with it (even the women's team).
Imagine being born a Liverpudlian. Now that’s something to get worked up about.
41 Posted 19/08/2009 at 08:16:59
No.14 Sing a player’s name from the bottom of your lungs even though he’s handed in a transfer request and told the manager he doesn’t want to play today because he’s "not in the right frame of mind".
No. 15 Say Osman isn’t playing well because he’s being played out of position.
Spot on Tony, you sound like you’re almost at breaking point. There are some good offers on at the moment to join golf courses.
42 Posted 19/08/2009 at 08:31:06
Whereas Saint Tony has in fact ... errr ... well ... well at least he has sat on his opinionated backside and spouted forth utter shite and negativity blaming everyone from Kenwright to the Toffee Lady for the demise of Everton Football Club. And let’s face it we are in demise... going from 17th in the league in the late 90s to 5th for the second year running is an appalling record and David Moyes should hang his head in shame before packing all his things into a cardboard box and handing his office keys to Tony Marsh so we can really progress this club... I can hear the chants in my head right now... "He’s got some hair and doesn’t know what the fuck he’s doin’... Tony, Tony Marsh ..." Oh for the days of the relegation dog-fight.

Number 17 — Never ever boo an Everton player ever because they play for us and thus we must respect their ability regardless of how crap they may be.
Number 18 — Harp on about how Moyes has installed pride back into the football club and completely ignore the countless hammerings and cup humiliations and the fact that we have not won a single trophy in his tenure.
But hey, he is the world’s greatest manager ever — make no mistake about that, Marsh!
48 Posted 19/08/2009 at 14:09:09
I asked you this yesterday and no response from you so after the latest diatrabe, any chance of answer to this today?
In real world terms can you tell me how would like to see the club move forward
You want Moyes out - Replaced by?
You want Kenwright out - Replaced by?
You want Hibbert, Osman, Pienarr, Arteta, Cahill out ( ’all small choir boy players’) - Replaced by who?
For all your frustration, bitching and moaning can you propose one positive motion you would make to improve the situation?
I, like most others here have deep frustrations with the club but yours seem to run to a far more personal level, were you rejected by the club at youth level?
All I’m asking for is an objective article from you for once, one without the bile, myopic hatred and utter negativity.
49 Posted 19/08/2009 at 14:17:39
Sounds like you want him to write your article — maybe you should do it.
Oh, and I don’t believe your list accurately reflects Tony’s position.
