A Dunne deal?
Comments (31)
It is reported in one of the newspapers (Sunday Independent) that Richard Dunne will form part of a cash-plus-player deal for Lescott. What are people's thoughts on Richard Dunne coming back to Everton?
Personally, I am dreading the thought of Dunne playing for Everton again. He's far too error-prone and gets sent off far too much as well. Maybe Moyes sees Dunne as a squad player, but not a first choice centre back?

Let’s not jump the gun here, Jamie, particularly with the Telegraph suggesting we’ve done a deal for £24m (though that could, of course, include a valuation for Dunne), but I share your fears of a return of the Honeymonster.
He’s slow, has the turning radius of an 18-wheeler and is prone to errors and own goals, as you say. But, beggars can’t really be choosers at this point and if we can get someone like Steve Taylor as well before the deadline then I suppose we should be reasonably happy heading into the rest of the season.

I think he’s improved a lot since leaving Everton and matured. He had 2 very good seasons before struggling last year. However he has been citys best player in the 2 games this year. We need centre backs in quickly so i am happy to have him and a massive load of cash. This really is the deal of the century getting over 20 million quid for a good but not great centre half. He’s probably 4th maybe 5th in the england pecking order if Jags gets fit and if Ledley King stayed fit he would have no chance of playing for England. Sorry to see him go but we’ve lost better players and for once have got the better of the deal.

Not going to happen, Jamie.
We should be delighted to get anywhere near £20m for Lescott. Good defender but has always been found out against the better strikers (founds part of our poor record against the ’top 4’). Gets found out at international level and is worth for more now than post World Cup.
No-one will ever sell him for more than EFC will.

Wouldn’t be the end of the world to have Dunne back, at times he looks outstanding! But I’d be disappointed if we didn’t swoop for Huth / Wheater / Taylor as well, so we have some real competition at the back when that legend Jags comes back.
Lescott has been tremendous for us, good luck to him, hope it gets knocked on the head soon so we can get more bodies in!

It makes sense to take a player in exchange as
1. I dont think Wolves get 10% of him?
2. It means we have an instant replacement until Jags gets fit and dont have to do it the "Everton Way" which would mean we’ll be lucky to have a centre half by January.
He is as good as most Premier League centre halves and knows the club so will settle in quickly.
My only concern is his fondness for the pop.

Dunne was a young player when we sold him and is a battle hardened PL pro now. And he has never played for Moyes - forget the pop for a year or two Richard if you’re coming.
An acceptable stop-gapwhich could even work out well.
At least the written transfer request means that Wolves will get what would have been Lescott’s share of the fee. Hope it really is £24m.

Suzy, spot on. Watching Terry and Ferdinand, they are comfortable with both feet, while keeping the ball. Lescott is not comfortable with his right foot.
Lescott, you are the weaskest link... FUCK OFF. What goes around comes around you greedy twat.
Spot on Suzy.

Richard Dunne is like another Yobo - prone to horrendous errors - but not as quick and therefore less able to dig himself out of trouble.
I’d prefer Taylor any day to Dunne.
Selling Lescott is the only way we’ll be able to spend any cash this Summer, but I’ll be amazed if we spend all of the fee, so perhaps Moyes will opt for a player from City to ensure he gets a player at all. For the second year running Everton ar looking at making a surplus on transfer fees.

I’d much prefer Taylor over Dunne .... Dunne is too accident prone and "waiting for a red card" type of player for me.
I was talking to a friend of mine before the season (before the Lescott saga) and we both agreed that Taylor would be a very good addition (my mate wanted him for Villa I might add).
So, as much as I’d prefer Lescott to stay... if we get £20m plus and we can bring in Taylor, I’d be happy with that.

SSN have just shown a few of the sports stories from tomorrows papers and they state Lescott is going for £24m and we are putting in a complaint with the FA for City tapping up Lescott. One paper even goes so far as saying we are looking for £10m compensation (not sure which paper it was). I cant see us getting anywhere with the complaint though.

The Times article on the ToffeeWeb site re: Lescott is spot on to me and the comments from Moyes in that article about how Lescott has behaved just show what greedy, mercenary cunts people like Lescott really are. Saying he didn’t want to play against Arsenal, behaving like a spoilt kid in training whilst gladly takign his £40k a week.
Whilst I’m not that wet behind the ears to believe in such a thing as "loyalty" in football what I do expect from professionals is to act professionally.
Lescott hasn’t and neither has that arsehole Mark Hughes. I have never seen any other manager talk so publically about a transfer target over such a sustained period of time whilst claiming at the same time to be acting in a proper manner. He is like a chav who has won the lottery and betrays his lack of class. He actually makes the Fat Spanish Waiter look dignified.

Whilst if I was given the choice between Dunne and Lescott it would be Lescott every time; Dunne was Man City’s supporters' Player of the Season at least two years on the bounce. He is a very good defender and if it was a choice between Dunne and Senderos, I’d have Dunne every day of the week.

As much as I usually hate our players getting in to the England squad (as they usually fuck off soon after), I would love nothing more this season than to see Lescott replaced in the England Squad, around about April, by none other than a recently proved fit Phil Jagielka.

Even if we replaced Lescott with Dunne (which I don't think is likely!) we would still be down at least one other CB. Taylor is a good player and is the type of young player Moyes could develop — but the thought of having Yobo and Pip as our CBs for the start of the season isn't inspiring to say the least....
Anyway, let's get the win at Burnley tomorrow and hope that this week the signings begin... well it has too!

Ritchie Dunne has been outstanding for Ireland over the last few years, with MotM performances in most games. He’s a much better player now than he was when he was sold by Walter Smith — don’t forget, Smith sometimes played him as a wing back! Under the tutelage of DM he could get even better.
Also, he’s cut out the pop since Keegan came over to Ireland and spoke to his parents and gave him an ultimatum a few seasons ago.
He should never have been sold. It would be great to see him back in an Everton shirt.

With the final curtain about to come down on Lescott’s career with the club, it would appear the tabloids still cannot agree on the valuation. Depending on which one you choose to believe, the agreed figure could be anything between £22m and £25m. If the final settlement is in this range it will be total vindication of Moyes's steadfast approach from day one and a rebuttal for all those in the media and indeed some of our own fans who were clamouring for a quick sale.

Absolutely agree with those agreeing with you, Suzy. Shipping Lescott for £22/25m will well shade last year’s conning of Fulham and Brum with Johnson and McFadden.

I’d put this in the "why we shouldn’t sell Lescott" post about the way City have behaved and they should be done for tapping up.
I see this morning, all the back pages are reporting Everton are going to the FA over this and are seeking £10million extra in compensation and a points deduction for City. I would fucking love that.

I saw that Dunne is 29 years old. Prime age for a defender — we should get at least 3-4 years out of him. And don’t forget we have Moyes, Round and Stubbsy to get the errors out of his game.
£20 million + Dunne — good enough to buy Taylor, Banega on loan, Bentley & Hutton, plus some change left over for January.
That should do for me!
Alan Clarke

I’d imagine Moyes could coach Dunne to stop the mistakes. Like you say Ajay, 29-30 is a prime age for a defender. Some of our best defenders have been the old guys - Watson, Stubbs, Gough and Weir.

I suppose that means we will need to look for cover at left back now as well, anyone have any ideas on that?
Does anyone know if Valente found another club?

Michael Ball’s still available.
Not the best, but surely good enough for cover. And he’s True Blue.

I read that Dunne is on £75k per week and a 3-year contract at City... if true, would he come to EFC on much much less?

My gran’s lodger’s half-cousin who has a burger van in Spellow Lane on matchdays, says that Rod Belfitt and Bernie Wright were seen with BK this week. BK had promised them both five year contracts and free double cheeseburgers for every clean sheet.
However, I don’t believe the rumour that Preki is also signing, as long as he gets that bathroom plumbed-in in Fazakerely by next Saturday!

He’s a better player now and center halfs get better with age, eg, Watson, Stubbs, Weir, and Gough, as already stated by Alan. But he would do until Moyesy plucks another gem from the lower leagues and if it’s true what he says about Rodwell in three years he’s a nailed on CH.
On another note I wouldn’t call Lescott gready he’s gone to another job to earn upwards of £40k a week extra. Anyone who suggest he not being loyal is being very naive. What he is being is very unprofessional and it rearly pisses me off when you hear Cahill and the likes calling him a true professional, what happened to the (old show must go on) attitude. I think their all just trying to justify it in case any offers come their way in the future.
I believe the way the manager has handled this has been very commendable.

To all of the posters getting indignant about Roger’s lack of ’loyalty’ since when has loyalty played a part in football? certainly modern day football, players, agents and yes even managers will jump ship or ask for an astronomic wage rise to top up their already astronomic wages. This part of the game I find sickening and its sowing the seeds of its own destruction (Morgan Stanley anybody) but if you love football and sadly I can’t break the habit you put up with it. Who was it that said, if you want loyalty, buy a dog

I really cant understand what the problem is with Dunne coming back, we could defo do a lot worse . Whoever thinks he is slow has not really watched him play that much . I think his major problem is that he just switches off some times . I have no problem with the odd own goal, as most top defenders score own goals because they are always in there somewhere at the last, trying to get there foot or head on to stop it going in, a la Jags ! So its not like he his scoring crazy 20 yard og’s into the top corner, usually off a knee or toe or something . Every time he plays for Ireland he is man of the match, and against good teams too e.g. Italy, Bulgaria . I think he is coming into his prime now and has got them shaky couple of years where he has learned a lot, out of the way now . With a good defensive coach like we all know Moyes is he could really blossom . I know one thing for sure I would take him over Senderos any day . If we got him and Taylor and DM is actually given the money from the Lescott sale, which is a BIG IF, I for one will be quite happy .

I’d have no problem with Dunne and I think he would have a point to prove being replaced by Lescott. My worry is getting Silvain Distin. I can’t get the Portmouth v Liverpool game out of my head from last season. Distin was absolutely torn to bits. I felt sorry for him it was that bad. The thought of him playing in a Liverpool derby sends shivers down my spine.

I can believe the flack Dunne gets. When we sold him years ago he was on a road to ruin. Booze, discipline and weight problems a plenty. But since then he has fairly turned it all around. He’s a rock at the back for the Republic of Ireland, and has come to their rescue at some stage in nearly each of their last 10 matches. And i can’t believe that some people actually think he’s slow. Are you fucking kidding me??? His acceleration is shit, but over a long stretch i’ve seen him keep pace with ladyboy torres and that sulking cunt anelka.
At this stage i would take him back, we need as many players as possible, otherwise we wont last the season! And as for the other names we’re being linked with as replacements for the dollar chasing lescott - senderos, taylor, distin etc etc everyone of them a frequent liability. Next on the list will probably be that defensive mastermind titus bramble. Gimme a break...

David, it was Harry Truman who said if you want loyalty in Washington D.C. , buy a dog . Trouble is the shady underworld of American politics does not have a patch on the dodgy goings on behind Premier League transfers. If Man Shitty wanted YOUR dog they would just offer him more pedigree chum , and a chance of winning Kruffs, or whatever its called and he would be gone before you could say here boy !
