What Moyes should have said

Comments (34)

This is what Moyes should have said after the game...

"We wanted to buy Elm and Senderos but Bill Kenwright couldn’t get any money from his mates and his plan of false advertising with promised 'Wow' signings didn’t produce enough revenue to spend £2 million apiece on those water carriers. Right now BK is stalling on the Lescott deal, hoping it will go through at the 11th hour so he can use the money to clear some of our debt as the window will be shut by then.

"With regard to the team, I have to admit in hindsight Jo’s early goals for us were scrapy and lucky like, Franny Jeffers's early ones, and we got duped into thinking luck was class... but at least we didn’t splash the cash like Wenger did for Franny and Hughes did for Jo.

"At this point, I hope to sign a couple of youngsters for little or nothing to replace Scott Spencer in Andy Holdens group since he was upset that the only players I gave him thus far were amateurs from the US and not even pros.

"I’m aware that Hibbert isn’t any good but he has added diving to his repertoire so we’re hoping he can build on that in the coming weeks... so, if we persuade Rhino to come out of retirement, we can win a few 1-0 games against other bankrupt sides.

"If you’re wondering why I haven’t quit yet, it’s because if I went to a rich club they’d give me money to spend and then fire me in 6 months if I had poor results, whereas I can stay here for another ten years and make a small fortune as a nearly man."

That raised a smile, Kieran, after such a dismal result. Very naughty of you, though; we can't condone such fictional nonsense. You are a very bad person!

I have a very plain point to make: there is simply no excuse for any aspect of the most recent shambles at Everton.

Far too many liars among the paid staff; complete, but expected, rubbish from the Board, but, much worse, all of it accomplished with the support of some of the fans.

And it is the fans who will, ultimately, reduce this present comedy to a tragedy through blind support of as big a set of tossers as has ever been mistaken for a club management.

To call them shite is to insult shite.

Lescott is having a medical at City and more transfer lies. This season just gets worse and worse...

Kieran, you’re talking my language friend. For a man of ambition and integrity, he becomes more and more of a highly paid ’yes’ man each year.

Moyes has to take full responsibility.

He has handled the Lescott transfer appallingly. He played him against Arsenal AFTER Lescott said he didn't want to play. He has delayed the deal and is now complaining about he hasn't got time to buy new players.

Elm was shown round over a month ago and still his club say we haven't made a bid.

We turn up for a hearing on Friday to get Banega a work permit. His club deny any knowledge of a deal and the day before the hearing Valencia play him in a Europa match which cup-ties him!!

There are rumours we tried tp sign Senderos and now Dunne. Thank fuck Glenn Keeley has retired.

Tactics are appalling. Vaughan is a far better player than Jo. No width, just hoofball playing for throw-ins and corners.

Wigan is a must-win now. They have played one away game and won at Villa. Be afraid.

Hibbert..eh..even when he plays relatively well - he’s still murdered by a lack of thinking..

Kieran, that's probably what Moyes should have said... but on £60k per week, he knows when his bread is buttered. Keep your mouth shut; take all the plaudits and let BK take any blame. He is in a no-lose situation.

Atrocious football; non-existent transfer policy; no scouting system. What other manager would sit around while all this was going on? Can you imagine Rafa/Redknapp/O’Neill etc meekly standing by... no, of course not — which is why they have all signed players this summer.

Still, 7 years after Smith left, fans are happy we no longer are a team who battle relegation — as though being good to watch and not a relegation team can't go hand in hand. No pace or power for 4 years now in midfield and nothing done to solve the problem. Work hard seems to be Moyes’s only tactic.

Spot on, John. Moyes seems to be a yes man. If he was that ambitious, he’d leave as he doesn’t seem to be getting any support from the board, which makes achieving anything really substantional difficult.

Moyes's tactics seem to be based on working hard. That’s great but it needs to be combined with pace and skill, which we have neither. The whole club needs a complete shake up or we should just be satisfied with being a small-time club with small-time ambitions.

I have to say I am feeling very disillusioned and disappointed at the moment. I can take being beaten and I can accept missing out on transfer targets because of lack of funds, but what I can't take is when I feel I'm being mislead or lied to.

I am one of Moyes biggest fans one of the biggest things I appreciate is his honesty, although I don't know what's going on behind the scenes and there maybe good explanation I just feel we have been lied to regarding the signings we were supposed to be making "in the next 48 hours" which was over a week a go and saying nobody would be sold and now he's saying it looks like Lescott will be.

I would rather be told nothing than have my hopes built up and knocked down again. Moyes has turned these situations around in the past so I will give him the benefit of the doubt but I feel it will be harder to back him in the future if these lies continue.

We are utter crap. No team chemistry. No ambition. No invention. No bite in the midfield. No heart. No desire. No points after two matches. No wonder no one wants to join us.

Moyes is surely going to be as pissed off as anyone over this whole Banega farce. I’m sure he’ll speak out about this.

12   Posted 23/08/2009 at 19:19:31

When Moyes accepted his bumper salary, he did so knowing quite well that there was to be no money and he cannot go banging the drum 12 months down the line. In this respect he sold out big time. As a club, we are a laughing stock, our brand of football is some of the worst Ive seen.

The Banega story, if true, has made a complete tit out of Moyes and I hope he comes clean on it. Besides all this, a lot of our fans are quite happy to go along with all this and say "we finished fifth and got to a cup final"... The club shows no ambition whatsoever, and treats its fanbase like politicians do their voters, i.e, with contempt. The sooner the chairman is gone, the better, but when and how will that happen if he is having his strings pulled by others?

I’m beginning to think Moyes is in on the whole thing, get his slice of the big pie when DK is approved, and then fuck off to Scotland and wait for the Celtic/Scotland job.

The players’ body language again today was that of Lescott last week — that says to me the manager is not doing his job.

Kieran, you have got it spot on.

In DM’s response to the question "Will the sale of Lescott free up some funds for new players?" DM insinuated that he ’hoped’ it would but that it was "a bit late" to be gettting any reinforcements in. Something fucking stinks.

1991 — the last time our club said no to mediocrity. Colin Harvey, an Everton legend and then manager, sacked after 2 finishes of 4th and 1 of 8th I believe. An FA Cup Final defeat and a League Cup semi-final defeat to Arsenal. But, after the success of the Kendall years, the board were not happy and sacked him.

Since then, the boardroom has become a shambles, investment is non-existent and the ability to finish 5th with a mediocre squad is rewarded with a long contract provided you don't complain about lack of money to spend like any other top class manager would do.

I don't want Moyes to go in our current situation, he’s as good as anybody for grinding out results with limited resources. I’m not even having a go at Billy Liar’s pathetic chairmanship I am just thinking back to those heady days when the board and the fans had high hopes and were not content to settle.

Today I’ve heard lots of fans defending Moyes; I don't really have a problem with that in the cold light of day, it's just that, after such a poor performance again, instead of an angry outburst from fans who don't want mediocrity, we get apathy.

Everything is too cosy at EFC; Moyes is plodding along knowing full well that we cannot match his ambition, but a fat contract keeps him happy while he waits for a top job, while the board are happy to keep us just as we are with no ambition to move on and progress — 'cos that costs money.

Shambles pre-season again, transfers are a joke... and the future plan, Kirkby, has everyone thinking about jacking it in, great init?

Here we are again. The usual suspects. The usual August results. The only difference is that the conspiracy theories are getting more baroque.

I spoke to my old man on the the phone a couple of hours ago. When I was whining and bitching in the seventies, he reminded me of his lowest ebb, which was the stint in the early fifties in the Second Division, and his wedding day on September 6, 1958 when Arsenal whacked us. 6-1. At Goodison.

I’m reading a lot of whining about "All Moyes has given us is fifth and yet another Cup Final defeat".

What do we want? What I want is the best that Everton can produce with the resources available.

Ideally, I’d love to get in touch with my distant trillionaire cousin Brad Hunsecker III in Emerald City, Kansas, and persuade him to put a billion or two into EFC. Then we buy Kaka, Aguero, and whoever the hell we want. And pension off that idiot Moyes and get ... well, someone better. Let’s check the online version of CM and see who’s done best.

Oh, come on. Today was appalling, but the first two games of last season were. Get over it.

There is no trillionaire cousin. We do the best we can.

18   Posted 23/08/2009 at 20:16:52

@ M Buonfiglia ... Yes things have been worse - the early fifties as you mention, and the 70’s were hardly a bundle of laughs.

More by accident than design, they bucked up in the mid eighties.

But to be sanguine in the face of this unfolding farce is the kind of gutless wimpery which will see us so far behind progressive clubs, we’ll never catch up.

Rubbish, Rubbish. When wiil it end? All the lies and a Manager who sulks after a defeat (Radio Merseyside Interview) instead of being angry.

He should have told the players before the Burnley game that the Clarets will be up for it but so would we and that will surprise them. But what happens? — nearly a goal down in the first minute.

Why Moyes persists with Hibbert and Osman, I will never understand. We need pace and at least Gosling and Vaughan would give us some.

Today we were loosing, and badly, yet Moyes makes just one substitution. Time and time again he dithers. We are so boring to watch and it's embarrassing. We cannot win every game but you would think we could be entertaining.

IF the Kirkby move is agreed then that would be the last straw. We need a miracle!!!

I am completely heartbroken by the state of the club. Bill Kenwright is a coward for not coming out and explaining why we are in this position regarding transfers. This is not how an Evertonian should behave. We are sinking without a trace, people!!!

Marco, it is because fans like yourself are quite happy to plod along with this garbage, that Billy bullshit gets to do and lie to whomever he wants. You say "we do the best we can" which is the opposite of our club motto. You may be happy with this, Marco, but I am not and quite frankly am at the end of my patience with EFC.

I am considering this being my last season going the game because the club is just not ambitious. The football we play is woefull hoofball shite.

Where the fuck is our chairman? When the sun is shining he is forever making statements and talking shit.

A fucking embarrassing, shambolic shower of shite. I was of the opinion that this summer it would be different, surely we were going to spend a few quid and at least consolidate our recent league finishes, what in all honesty isn't far off miraculous considering the money other teams have spent.

But alas, Bullshit Bill has outdone himself yet again and my estmimation of Moyes and how he has handled both Lescott and silence on transfers withers more every day this goes on!!

Is he honesty expecting us to believe that Lescott WASN'T going to go to City? For fuck's sake, Tevez and Adebayor have signed!!! Doesn't take a genius to know he was going as well. So why not just say at the begining of July, "Right then, give us £24M and he is yours".

Then we spend that plus the £5M that was destined for Naughton (or was that just more bollocks?) on getting two centre-halves and a pacy winger? We can all see what is needed and the way that bullshit is continually spouted to the fans is an insult to us all.

23   Posted 23/08/2009 at 21:09:16

I think it’s this simple:

Under the current regime we have peaked. It’s highly unlikely we will finish 5th, and doubtful we will get to another cup final, let alone win one!

Spurs have been spending big for years and years, and although it’s early days it’s clear to see they are going to be challenging for European places this season.

City have spent over £200million!!!! Enough said.

Villa will challenge us again with perhaps Sunderland and Fulham.

I’m usually optimistic but I feel this whole JL saga has ruined our team spirit and it will take a while to repair and may never get back to the level it was.

Some fans are content with Kenwright and Co. Ask yourself this: Do you honestly see us bettering last season with the current set-up?

Nil Satis Nisi Optimum is, according to Robert Elstone, what we relate to and no longer "The People's club". He obviously never did Latin at school.

I am so angry and frustrated at the amaturish running of this club; how is it that we continue to make the same mistakes every single season?

It seems as though we haven't even learnt from lessons this season. When we allowed Jacobsen to go, I believed that the only way this would be allowed to happen is if Moyes had a replacement lined up; as it happen we had a bid accepted for Naughton... I thought "Great, good stuff," only for Spurs to poach him from under our noeses!

Lessons should have been learnt, Lescott should not be allowed to leave until these two centre-halves signing we were promised have signed on the dotted line, otherwise we will probably be left in limbo yet again!

How can these people be allowed to run a club? It beggars belief, if things were done correctly, either we would still have Jacobsen or Naughton and we would have two new centre-backs.

I’ve always been a fan of Moyes and think he has taken the club to an acceptable level. His comments on transfers today, though, have taken his/the club’s antics to a whole new level...

He’s now basically stating City have left it too late for him to bring in a replacement for Lescott (BBC website). The same Lescott who has apparently never been for sale

It’s not City’s fault we’re shite when it comes to transfers. Moyes — WE HAVE HAD AN ENTIRE TRANSFER WINDOW TO BUY PLAYERS. If Lescott always had his price, why haven’t you lined up a replacement?

Anyway, why would it be any different if City gave us £24M for him today? We still wouldn’t bring in any players before the deadline. We’ve proven time and time again that we’re completely incompetent in the transfer market — we’re a laughing stock.

I am completely fucked off with this club. The players, the manager, the board. Fucked off.

Without meaning to come across all Geordie, does anybody think some form of protest could be arranged for an upcoming home game? Surely there must be something we can do to show the club that an increasing proportion of the fans are becoming increasingly disillusioned with the shambolic running of the club?

I suggest this as one of a countless number of blues who are sick to the back teeth with recent (non-)events and a feeling of almost stifling frustration that nothing is being done. Surely if enough people come together then the club (ha!) — maybe even the local media — might have to acknowledge an increasing unrest.

There maybe many good reasons to shoot this idea down but I’m going mad sat in front of this computer screen feeling impotent.

Trevor Thompson
28   Posted 23/08/2009 at 22:32:38

Andrew B, don’t even think about a protest. Too many people are behind Kenwright and Moyes to complain. It’s the whole, "We’ll be alright on the night", "We finished 5th and got to an FA Cup final" attitude that will keep us here.

Sorry to say, but our fans think like we’re a small club. Seems that perhaps everyone associated with Everton feel that way too. The fact some fans cheered for Lescott to stay shows that we live in a fantasy land where players appreciate the fans and are loyal to their clubs. One day we’ll wake up but it’ll be too late.

Marc Williams

Andrew - You always get loads coming on with 101 reasons NOT to protest but FFS, enough is enough, I think we should. We should have done the ’Bring your boots’ protest properly last year.

How about turning up with bright yellow plastic collecting buckets marked Everton transfer kitty! Or TAXI FOR KENwRIGHT signs!

I’ve totally had it with all the lies & let downs.

I have simply had enough. Football has gone too far this season, my Club I have supported all my life has now lied to me for the last time and I believe Moyes is just another puppet in the bigger picture of smokes and mirrors.

I have just read the following qoute about Manchester City buying Lescott — Moyes says: 'If they say they are quite far on I'm sure they are. But we shouldn't have been asked to wait this length of time for an amount of cash we think was the correct value for the player. Real Madrid came in with the money (£80 million for Cristiano Ronaldo) for Manchester United the week after the end of the season. 'If the money had been offered in June it would have been a lot easier for us. The time is against us (to find a replacement).'

So why now is Moyes crying about needing the Lescott money to buy players in a hurry after telling us only a week ago Lescott is not for sale and I am bringing 4 players in? I am sick of the dishonesty.

Football is no longer entertainment, if it is, I want my money back as I am not being entertained and if you lie to me I will never trust you again. Moyes, Kenwright you have betrayed the the only loyal people in football, the fans.

The Everton statement added: "Chairman Bill Kenwright has worked tirelessly to get the best deal for Everton, achieving a substantial increase on Manchester City’s original offer."

I almost fell off my chair when I read this. Is it not his job to get us the best deal? What does he want, a fucking medal?

He must be one tired fucker, on account of all the "tireless work" he puts in. You have to wonder what the club thinks of us when they put statements like that on the OS.

Why I ever thought this summer would be different, I’ll never know. It’s the same shit every year, one step forward, two steps back. I see this year they’ve taken it a bit further, with DM outright lying to us as far as transfers are concerned.

I buy and sell horses for a living. Every horse that I own outright or just have a leg in is for sale. I know what I want for each one. That simple. If I have a guy that comes and makes me an offer or two, I do not prolong stuff, I simply turn to the guy and say he/she is yours for that and not a penny less.

Now if Lescott had a price as Moyes is now saying then why not turn round to City in the first week in July and say £24mil or don’t bother talking to me again. Gotta say though horses are much more loyal than some of the two-legged nags that grace the game of football!!!!

The fact is that the only way that we are going to get major external money into the club is:

1. interest being shown by a foreign multi-bilionaire

2. a different ground. No-one is going to be interested whilst we are in Goodison. Like it or not, that’s the truth

And even then its not something which will necessarily work. Liverpool is - still, despite the economic regeneration - a poor Northern city - and we are a club with a very focused local support which in these terms is a weakness not a strength.
