Waiting for the fallout

Now that the price has been agreed and the saga over Lescott has been settled, I am actually feeling quite smug about the money we got for him. Reports are from £22 million to £24 plus add ons.

Well let's be honest the lad isn't worth that much even in todays inflated markets. If you take off the blue tinted glasses we all have, and see that he is at present 4th choice center back for England (5th when Jags gets back), he is a confidence player, and he can get be bullied during games. So are we losing out?

People may say he offers us cover at left back. Well, yes, that's true in theory. But when asked to play there he always stated that he was a central defender, I believe this really showed his attitude was more for himself than the team. If the money is invested wisely (surely one thing we can all agree on, is that Moyes is good with the money he has) then we will come through this stronger. Cover at CD is needed, cover at LB is needed, but after getting £22-24million in the bank that will leave us enough to invest in a right back and right winger.

As for Lescott and City, well they seem like a good match. New found attitude problems, and no class. I wonder now with the price tag, and the uproar surounding this transfer whether it will afect him.

He's now a high profile player playing at the club everyone wants to see fail. Every mistake by the new £22 million pound signing will be highlighted on MOTD by Hansen and crew, and with there team set up being attack minded he won't get the cover he's used to. Plus we have shown other teams that when City come calling, make them pay top wack.

Yes Dan I agree with you about feeling quite smug — it's a terrific price and clearly what Moyes was aiming for all the time with his resistance — it's what we value him at. If you recall at one point early last season, Lescott was playing left back and we looked solid with Yobo and Jags, so hopefully we can get back to that state.

Just a point regarding his transfer request — since Moyes ripped it up, does that mean we still have to pay out his contract? He still hasn't been announced even though he surprisingly passed the medical — maybe there is one more twist to come which will delay the deal — and hence the payment and reinvestment in new players. I can’t see Moyes agreeing to pay his contract up — perhaps more brinkmanship with him being ordered back to Finch Farm for training!

This is what has been claimed in another article :

Club officials have confirmed the England defender has passed a medical and that there are no major problems, certainly none affecting City or the actual deal with Everton.

Whether Lescott is claiming a loyalty bonus on the basis that Everton turned down his transfer request is open to conjecture but while senior staff at Eastlands are ready to sign the deal off, so far there has been no resolution to the problem.

The funny thing is that even with Lescott’s inflated £24 million price tag used as a barometer, I still can only come up with a value of around £450k for Hibbert.

You’d think that if Liverpool finished 3rd and have a right back worth £22 million and a right midfielder worth £20 million and if Tottenham finished mid table with a £9 million right back and a £17 million right midfielder, that us being in between should have a right midfielder worth £18 million and an right back worth £14 million but instead we have Osman and Hibbert worth a combined £800k.

If only Kenwright had worked a little harder to have them included in the Lescott deal, we might have got a cool million for the pair.

Kieran

Osman and Hibbert: It’s not funny anymore. You are a supporter and you should support.

I’m as frustrated by this Summer as anyone, but you are aiming your insults at the wrong people. They aren’t worldbeaters, but they always give 100% and Osman is played out of position and carried an injury a lot of last season.

Hibbert has his faults, but had a good season last year until the Cup Final. In fact, fans of other clubs I know rate Osman very highly for his close skills and goals. He isn’t the strongest, but that’s where team work comes in. Bigger players need to make the space for him to operate in.

How is your (and others) sniping at them helping anybody?

I have always held DM in high regard for what he has achieved during his time with us. He has strong points: getting the best out of average players; sourcing players who blend into the squad and compliment it also. What he lacks clearly though is learning from his mistakes.

Once again, we enter the last few days of the Transfer Window with a squad as thick as a Rizla. Not only are we losing a central defender in Lescott but also cover for Baines.

People argue we wait every season for the Sky money before making our purchases... yet another excuse!!!! Has he not considered the vast number of players available on a free?

He bemoans that new players must be of the standard of the first team, but surely every squad in the Premier League doesn't have 20-odd players of the same standard??? DM look in the mirror, every May see who is out on contract in July and take a punt. I personally would have had no qualms in seeing Sylvinho, Ball, Neill, Kovac, Pennant, Maniche or Seitaridis added to our squad. If he was prepared and sealed possibly 2 Bosmans in July we would then not be panicking like we do every season.

I am aware these players may not whet the fans appetite but all would provide adequate cover when required. So DM please learn from your mistakes and ensure this is the last of the transfer scrambles we have become accustomed too.

Would you believe it?

1) In a bid to prove that Everton can take advantage of marketing/finance opportunities, the club have announced that ticket prices for home games will be doubled for all seats with restricted views.

2) After months of abuse and criticism, Bill Kenwright has stated that he has finally had enough and is to sell the club immediately. He confirmed that he is about to enter negotiations with a UAE consortium headed up by Sheik Rattleandroll.

3) Following the Ever Banega fiasco, and looking to distance himself from the growing controversy, Everton owner Bill Kenwright explained to Sky Sports News that the battery in his transfer countdown clock needed replacing and he had in fact asked Moyes to go out and buy an Ever Ready.

4) Looking to offer an explanation as to what went wrong with the Senderos transfer, Kenwright claimed that everything was going to plan until Senderos discovered at the last minute that he wouldn't be walking the perimeter dishing out Everton mints but was expected to play in the team.

5) Club sources have strongly denied the rumour that, given the teams now customary slow start to every campaign, Chang have finally given up and withdrawn sponsorship though a new deal has been secured for the start of next season with Sanatogen.

I have said it all along, if getting rid of that shithouse meant we got a replacement for him plus a natural wide player I would be more than happy and we have got one of the two.

Hopefully all the money can be reinvested in the team - A re-vamp of the right hand side and a couple of centre halfs would be nice.
Regarding Lescott though he is going to take an awful lot of stick.
My view is that he has given us pretty much faultless service since he arrived with the exception of a dodgy start to last season. Anyone picking holes in his play or his personality is doing so purely out of spite. The lad is from Birmingham and gets the chance to double his wages and join the richest club in the world by moving from Liverpool to Manchester. He gets a titty lip on when Everton won’t let him leave and forces Evertons hand.
Everton have had good service from him and made a huge profit - give the lad a break. I’d rather a lescott every couple of years than a kroldrup.
Stan Sheppard
8   Posted 25/08/2009 at 08:04:02

I agree Gareth, we can give the lad all the stick in the world but I think he was a great defender for us and I am sorry to see him go. However, 22-24m is a smashing price! The fact that he asked to be left out of the Arsenal match and the nature of the transfer in general have undoubtly left a bad taste.

Its been a truely shocking start to the season but at least there is time to get something sorted before the deadline.

I am massively disappointed with what has gone on over the past two summers. Now that he has the contract he wants will Moyse be happy to do the same next year? Will Bill ever get investment? Does anyone believe that it was him that got is ’the best deal possible’ for Lescott? Interesting times ahead
Alan Clarke
9   Posted 25/08/2009 at 08:12:09

Lescott will do okay for that lot. It makes me laugh, when he’s playing for us, he’s class and should be an England regular but now we’ve sold him, he gets bullied and is a confidence player who is error prone.

I am delighted that we have finally signed a winger. When was the last time Moyes played a winger? (not counting Shandy). Arteta, Pienaar and Osman are certainly not wingers. Moyes has at least tried to sign wingers in the past - Riera and Wright-Phillips but when he fails has always reverted to type and bought another defensive midfielder. If this signing means Osman is now not a regular first team player then this is the best news I’ve heard all summer.

10   Posted 25/08/2009 at 08:24:34

Neil,
That’s mighty presumptious on your part as I don’t think the Lescott deal is cut and dried yet. There’s still a couple of formalities - so money won’t have been paid.

Also, we knew there was some money this close season. I’d suggest that it’s not Bilyatedinov, but what follows that is an indication of how much of the JL fee DM was given.

All on the assumption that Sitteh pay up front, which I expect they would do.
Alan Clarke
11   Posted 25/08/2009 at 08:38:30

Matt, do you still think City will pull out of the Lescott deal after there 9 month pursuit of him?
Peter Griffin
12   Posted 25/08/2009 at 08:38:55

After cashing in on JL we could now look to exploit the positions of Pompey, Newcastle and Boro for their players. Ironic or just football? Distin is an experienced CB who could also cover LB. Huth and Taylor are both young enough and have potential to be developed by DM. The prices quoted for Cahill and Shawcross emphasises the inflated prices of Premiership defenders, meaning we will once again return to the championship.

Ball is currently injured and as he’s available on a free could still be signed after the window closes if he proves his fitness?

Yak is playing for the ressies tonight, we’ve signed a left footed wide player, Banega is likely to sign and a defender or two will follow. Wins against Sigma and Wigan coupled with the new additions will see our season finally get going!

Yes Suzy, you’re predictions are far more accurate than Kenwright’s. "Mark my words" has now become more infamous to me than "watch this space"! Choose your charity.

It would still seem however, some of your cynicism is a little misplaced as it does appear Moyes will be given the Lescott money to spend rather than it going towards DK. In the national press at least Moyes has come out of this smelling of roses. I think you’re right, he is a very smart man.
Howard Don
15   Posted 25/08/2009 at 09:03:11

Well said Karl Masters, Osman and Hibbert aren’t worldbeaters, but they’re far better than some of the abuse they get here.

One other point, even if Moyes gets all the money, it won’t be the £22 or £25 million, don’t forget Wolves get around £3 million of that.

On Lescott, I just wonder. I remember his debut for us, he came on at left back, and looked like a rabbit caught in the headlights for a while (then settled into his game as the weeks went by). Ditto first game for England and also in that disaster in Russia. Makes you wonder how he’ll start at City under what’s going to be huge pressure to perform. I work with City fans who don’t particularly rate him.

Still why should I worry he’s no longer our concern.
Neil Pearse
16   Posted 25/08/2009 at 09:09:07

Let’s see on Lescott. It’s clearly a great deal for him, and I can’t blame anyone for doubling his wages and setting himself up and all this family for life. It’s clearly a very good price for us. Let’s see what his form is like at City.

As I recall Lescott always needed a strong mental presence beside him (e.g. Jagileka) to bring out his best at CB. I’m not sure Toure is that man. But I remember seeing him at GP on his debut, and thought: at last we’ve got a proper defender! Apart from his final little sulk he served us well. I would wish him well except I hope City get humiliated in every match they play for the rest of the season.

Jake,

If he gets Osman out of the team then I’m happy - all I was doing was being realistic about where we play him..

He has a great left foot..so the obvious choice would be in from the left - but that may impact on pienaar..
He’s played the Cahill role for the national side the last few times I’ve seen him and he looks good in that position - but that’s a position we’re more than over-subscribed in...

He’s not the fastest, but he’s skilfull...

Considering the problem positions are deep creative midfield and right wing...then I wonder how much Dalmat would’ve been available for..

Thanks for that, from what you have said I see Moyes moving Pienaar over from the left to the right. This would give Hibbert somebody in front of him who gets back and covers the forward pressing leftback.
Unless of course we also sign a rightsided player, and then who the fuck knows whats going to happen.

How old is this guy anyway? Toffeeweb are saying hes 27 but i think hes 24 according to wikipaedia, it doesnt look like he scores too many goal but then again neither does piennar or Arteta.

As long as he forces Osmen to the bench then this guy is ok with me, it must be 5 years we have been carrying Osmen in the side with his odd occasional above average performance against lower league oposition. Hopefully we can play 11 against 11 for a change.

All we need now is 2 Centre backs a cover left back a holding midfielder a right winger and a right back and were ready to challange for the title!

Ciarán, you forgot to mention we has been Russia’s Young Player of the Year (getting the nod over the likes of Arshavin, presumably). He’s also a winner (has medals on his chest) and a regular in the Russian side.

Ciaran, you say that Pienaar’s game might be affected by playing on the right instead of the left, but surely if he is a predominantly right-footed player then having a predominantly left-footed player like Bilyaletdinov on the right hand side gives us a bit of balance, not to mention the option of switching flanks during the games and giving the opposition double trouble?

Sorry, but your sniping and whinging begins to grow really tiresome. Even when we get a piece of good news you’re still out in force. It’s obvious the club can do no right in your eyes. Why don’t you let him play a few games first in the Premier League and see how he adapts. At the end of the season, if he’s scored 12 goals and provided 20 more, and we’re sat in 4th/5th place, will you really still be that underwhelmed or not?
Lee McIntosh
34   Posted 25/08/2009 at 12:27:02

On the stinks of appeasement comment, nothing against you Dave, and yes it makes, but I do know that Moyes enquired about him last season whilst chasing Arshavin, so he’s been on the horizon for a while... As has Huth for 4 years nearly, whom I’d quite like to see replace Lescott, Moyes will bring out a better player in him.

You started off well - sticking to the analysis of the player, then you reduced your post to personal sniping.

Im entitled to my opinion, as are you..If you don’t like it - I don’t particularly care.

I don’t complain about syncophantic and nauseatingly obesquious happy clappers like yourself who are eternally grateful for a single questionable signing in a summer of complete ineptitude - perhaps you should do me the same courtesy - or is that beyond the positives?

I CANNOT BELIEVE IT!
Alan Clarke
37   Posted 25/08/2009 at 12:35:55

I don’t think it’s desperation. It’s more lack of funds. Once Moyes has the money he’s moved fairly swiftly on this one so I do believe he has tracked him for a while. I read somewhere else that Hiddink had recommended him.

I will be pretty pissed off if people do feel appeased by this signing though. It’s taken Moyes to sell one of his best players in order to get any funds available for trasnfers.

Ciaran, do you watch Ukrainian and Serbian football as well? Perhaps you should write to Moyes with some other suggestions.
Peter Roberts
38   Posted 25/08/2009 at 12:39:03

Ciaran,

I am in no way a happy clappy (except Sunday mornings!) and I have been extremely frustrated at this year’s lack of signings. But now we have a signing to be pleased about, someone who could give us genuine width on both flanks - and all that happens is people still carry on moaning.

If this is the sole signing of the summer I will not be happy, but all the recent noises suggest we will get another centre half, maybe two and a central midfielder. That’s something to at least be positive about.

I am nevertheless frustrated it has taken until the last week of the window for this to be done. Meanwhile our rivals began two weeks ago - Spurs have won 3 out of 3, City have started efficiently if not spectacularly.

You still didn’t answer the question by the way - do you not think that having two wide players like Pienaar who operates so well on the left and Bilyaletdinov on the right, would finally give us a balanced midfield as well as a double threat with the option of them two switching flanks.

Have you even read what I’ve posted...or did you just skim over my name - while raising your eyes to the heavens?

I’ve offered an honest appraisal of him. It’s not moaning....Sorry, I’m not ecstatic..

He’s an improvement - that’s about as far as I’ll go - I’m happy we’ve finally signed someone but if you don’t want to engage in analysis of the player and his effect of the team then say so - don’t resort to simply calling it ’moaning’...

I share your view on Mensah though, he would do a job for sure! I like Wheater and Distin though, but you’d be looking at about £14m for the pair. It just shows what a smashing price we have got for Lescott when you can buy a winger and 2 very good centre halves and still have change.

It says on sky Villa have actually moved and bid fr Distin but the Echo states he’s all but signed for us????

Ciaran, I don’t get Russian satellite as it happens, but signing a Russian international regularly picked by Hiddinck is pretty okay for me as far as it goes. Certainly made me feel a bit better.

Accepted that we also desperately need a defensive centre mid, a centre half and a right back (although Neville can play there if we get the first two) - but our friend Diniyar is at least a start. Add Banega plus Distin or Huth and I might even crack a smile.

53   Posted 25/08/2009 at 16:09:48

Ciaran,

as a matter of fact, your stipulation that he ain’t a winger seems to have mysteriously vanished from near the top of the thread. However, I would maintain that Arteta and Pienaar are not out-and-out wingers but they did/have done OK from a wider position. What we needed more in the midfield was a balance, which a seemingly naturally left-footed player like Bily gives us, would you not agree?

I am perfectly happy to engage in analysis - I would just wish some of our fans would lighten up a bit when we actually DO do business within a day or two of being linked with the player. From the very small amount I’ve seen it sounds like he will be an improvement and the noises he is making sounds like he wants to play here. But I’m reserving judgement until he plays properly a few games for us - We know what happened to Per Kroldrup’s debut!

A quality Russian reinforcement, by the looks of things. Positive news, at last.

As for the potential signing of Distin - well, a decent centre-back but at 32 years of age the transfer fee appears unreasonable, as he´ll have very little sell-on value. I´m not sure how much he´s on at Pompey but they have been paying inflated wages to lure players there.
Personally, I would prefer us to sign Taylor if possible.
Ciarán McGlone
55   Posted 25/08/2009 at 17:14:14

Peter,

I would agree there’s merit in having a leftie coming in from the left wing...However, I’m slightly dubious about having so many central attacking midfielders in the first team in differing positions that they’re not suited to - I guess my real concern si that Moyes may try to fit everybody in at once..

However I agree with you - the most staggering thing (and uplifting) thing about this whole deal is its timeframe.

Absolutely astounded that we’ve done a deal for once without dragging it out ad nauseum.

Quite intriguing comments made by Sol Campbell at the press conference of his shock signing for Notts County.

I don't have the direct quote but was basically, after being asked why he did not sign for a Premier League club, was that "Behind the scenes many clubs in the Premier League are a disorganised shambles... you would be shocked if you saw it... they are all over the place... managers want to sign you but chairmen/board members object."

Whether or not we went for Campbell, however, I imagine we would, a free transfer, for 1-2 years, highly experienced and respected professional who would offer cover at centre back (i.e. a Stubbs replacement), his statement would certainly ring true with what many of us suspect at Goodison Park with the current administration.

Come on, let's vent our hatred of Bill some more, you know you want to...
