Latest on Banega

Comments (65)

There’s an article on Superdeporte.es, Valencia’s equivalent of Marca, on Banega:

In summary, Stuttgart had bid 7 million euros for him, roughly 6 million pounds and Valencia were happy to accept the bid, but the player didn’t want to go to Stuttgart.

Whether he’d want to come to us, it doesn’t say, but it does say that Valencia aren’t likely to loan him out even though they probably would have been willing to do so earlier in the summer. He’s had a good pre-season and the Valencia coach, Emery, is planning on using him. Which is not to say the club wouldn’t sell him if they could though.

Another thing is that both Baraja and Fernandes are out injured at the moment, so Banega’s the only senior midfield playmaker they have (there’s another player, Nacho González, but they don’t seem to think too much of him).

Valencia aren’t so desperate for money as they were as they’re now having a 100 million euro rights issue – they’ll still have plenty of debt, but they’ll have more breathing space.

Basically, if we want him we’re going to have to buy him by the looks of things – but then 7 million euros isn’t so much money when you’ve got 22 million pounds burning a hole in your pocket…

Make that £13m after the signing of Bilyaletdinov, Greg, but nice find, thanks!

Have to say I do worry that once again central midfield is going to be the position that doesn’t attended to by the time the window closes.

Here’s hoping Moyesey has something up his sleeve if Banega doesn’t pan out.

Surely we must have had around £10 million to spend before the Lescott sale.

So, that should still leave the £24 million available for 2 centre backs, 1 right back, 1 left back & a centre mid who can actually pass the ball. Hopefully all that isnt asking too much!!!

Hell, lets throw in a right winger while im at it :D

I thought we’d agreed £9 million at the end of next season for the defiler? So more than Stuttgart are offering.

I hope Moyes isn’t throwing all his eggs into one basket with this one and has other options lined up. The longer deals are dragged out with Everton, the less likely it is the deal will happen.

We earned £4 million in prize money for the FA Cup run plus the millions in TV rights money.

However, I’m sure we won’t spend more than another £10 million totalling £19 million spend.

So around £5 million from the Lescott deal, the FA cup money and TV money all goes missing - service debt and to the Kirkby pot.

5   Posted 26/08/2009 at 10:27:22

Exactly Andy, if we were bidding for Naughton and reportedly Delph then we had at least 10 million to spend before the deal for THAT centre back went through. That’s gone on Bilyaletdinov and leaves the bulk fee to spend.

However, he’s going to play on the left, leaving Pienaar to be our right sided player. Or, even swap them over. Either way...the width is sorted.
Central midfield should be wrapped up now, either they let Banega come or Valencia can sod off (surely their actions have been at the very least a tad on the odd side!?) and we move on.

That would free up Neville from the centre, and him and Hibs can fight over right back......leaving one other position we really need sorted...LEFT BACK. We have no cover for Baines now, bar maybe Seamus Coleman who I assume is a bit of a way off being ready.

What I can’t understand is how we, or anyone else for that matter, can apply for a work permit for a player without having the relevant documents, ie passport etc. If we’ve got them then we surely have his tacit approval.

11   Posted 26/08/2009 at 11:05:07

I’ll be surprised now if we get Banega, its got all the hallmarks of a dead duck. I think now Valencia are looking for money and it depends on how much Moyes really wants him. Don’t forget his bad boy reputation although some believe he’s just a bit thick. Moyes would be taking a chance on him and taking him on loan would have been a no brainer. My feeling now is that it won’t happen.

’Phantom bids’ Ciaran? Pray tell who were our confirmed ’phantom’ or ’fake’ bids? Also how do you categorically know they were ’phantom’ or ’fake’ bids? Naughton certainly wasn’t. Arsenal confirmed the Senderos talks.
Ciarán McGlone
14   Posted 26/08/2009 at 11:39:25

Naughton, Defour and Elm.

A phantom bid is one which does not deliver a player, Neil.

Peter Bourke, I hope to hell youre not right — that would mean Osman still on the right and Cahill and Fellaini playing in the middle... cosmic.
Neal Sutherland
15   Posted 26/08/2009 at 11:42:41

Bids not accepted by a club, or a bid that is less that the winning bid from another interested club do not deliver the player.

Sheffield United confirmed the Naughton bid. Defour was all paper and agent talk. And Elm had a tour of Finch Farm, but has admitted he’s plumping for AZ as they’ll bring more first team football.

Phantom or fake bids are actually delusional paranoia only particular to certain Evertonians, who usually frequent other message boards.
Brian Lawlor
16   Posted 26/08/2009 at 11:53:13

"Phantom" - means a figment of the imagination. In order words the bids never happened.

Naughton and Elm were both official bids. In fact Sheff Utd had initially accepted the bid. They never signed but they were bid for.

20   Posted 26/08/2009 at 12:12:11

No Ciaran, my 2 circumstances are when we actually bid.

Phantom bids are when people read it in the BBC’s or another gossip column, believe it to be true, and then get annoyed we don’t get the player despite the fact it ws all nonsense and we never actually bid in the first place.

Some important points...interest in a player does not equal a bid; and Agents tend to lie, to drum up other interest.

Woh Woh Woh Woh!

Lyndon, we signed Bily with money we already had. Moyes had money without the Lescott sale, may not have been a lot but it was enough for Bily surely, especially when he admitted bidding for Delph and Naughton, combined your looked at just over £10m.

By my reckoning, the Lescott money remains untouched! £24m of it! Less £5m for Distin it looks like and maybe the same or a bit more for his defensive partner and we still have a hefty some left for a midfielder.

Am I wrong people???

25   Posted 26/08/2009 at 12:51:59

"By my reckoning, the Lescott money remains untouched!"

By my reckoning, Everton should have lots of money, I mean, £3.5mil net spends in the Premier League with Sky money. We must have had millions come in that were not used on the transfer market.

BUT this is everton, this is Bill Kenwright. You honestly believe that because we bid for Naughton and Delph we have money to burn? That money was lined up from somewhere, and the Lescott money will not all go on transfers. Don’t get what you wish mixed up with the truth, you’ll only be hurt in the long run.

Gareth Humphreys: what is there to be happpy about at the moment? We have signed 1 player (who won't play for 3 weeks) and are linked with 1 other, and Moyes says he wants 4 total. (i.e. i will never be able to get more than 4 players)

So people with aspirations of 2 centre backs, a right back, a sub left back, a right winger and a defensive mid (6 more players... are you serious?) are delusional. It's not being negative, I’m quite excited about the Russian bloke, but thats it.

Also, phantom bids were bids like the Shearer, Cole, Collymore, Owen bids of the past... formal bids made to appease the fans without intending to actually spend anything.

Naughton wasn’t a phantom bid, but we didn’t get him and that does not mean that the money we bid for him will be added to the Lescott money. (We intended to spend the money on Naughton over 5 years, so infact it was probably about £500k that we had to spend, not £6million; probably the same with Delph.)

Hey Brian, have you ever seen the Star Wars film ’The Unsuccessful Menace’.

On another note, Football Manager time as I'm bored!

1. Robert Huth £5m centre back
2. Steven Taylor £6m centre back
3. Manuel Fernandes £5m centre mid
4. Gareth Bale £6m full back/left mid cover

I know Fernandes is not the tough tackling midfielder we are all crying out for but he’s gotta be an improvement hey?

PS: Neville at RB, Cahill behind the striker, Billy on the left Peanuts on the right, Fellaini and Jo on the bench and Hibbert and Osman in the bin!

Just to add something to this pot... How do you know we actually have the money from Lescott? Think about it in our own life, you buy something on your card or with a cheque, when does the money actually leave your account and arrive in the other shops? All the bank does is authorise that the buyer HAS the money, we might not actually have it available to spend til the end of the week.

Is City’s money even in a UK bank? A Middle Eastern Bank? They have different opening hours to us, I think I’ve heard that Thursday’s and Fridays all busineeses are closed out there??

Banega appears to be a playmaker in the Arteta mould, Pienaar can do that job now we have cover on the left with Billy the Kidski. So I’m not bothered about Eveready.

What I would like to see is a centre-mid enforcer who is comfortable with the ball; Veira would fit the bill if we could get his wages down and he could be young Jack's mentor 'til he’s ready for that role.

"What I would like to see is a centre-mid enforcer who is comfortable with the ball"

How injured is Manuel Fernandes?!

If we only signed him and the centre backs I’d be happy enough.

I’d love a right winger though, I know it was just paper talk, but why aren’t we interested in Bystrov? Couldn’t the two Russians keep each other company?

To the people wanting to sign a right back and a left back as well as the midfielders, that isn’t going to happen. The midfield signings (if they happen) would free up Phil Neville to play right back, and between Neville, a left footed centre-back, and even, apparently, Bilyaletdinov, Moyes would feel left back was covered. Still, on past experience I can see us signing the full backs INSTEAD OF midfielders.

Kev, the Middle East ’weekend’ is indeed traditionally Thursday and Friday.

However, in Dubai and Abu Dhabi this has effectively been changed to Friday and Saturday to allow more overlap with the rest of the world, I don’t know for a fact if that’s where City’s money is, but I’d expect (actually, hope for) it to be in our account by now anyway.

While everyone’s busy dividing up the Lescott fee don’t forget about wages!

The new tax laws for people earning over £150k per annum and the strength of the euro against the pound, not to mention our reputation for being quite frugal on the salary front all add up to us not signing very many players by August 31st.

Hence the focus should be on UK based players - so for centre back read two of Distin/ Taylor/ Huth/ Dunne, and for midfield don’t rule out Krancjar.

Expect the defensive midfield role to be taken up by some random player not making the grade in a European league a la Castillo on loan last season....

For £7m I’d have Banega, he's a young quality midfielder that will only get better, and I can’t honestly see Everton going through all the trouble of securing a work permit for the lad if they weren't seriously interested?!

I’d definitely take Distin too, experienced centre back that can also cover at left back and I’d go for one of either Taylor, G Cahill, Wheater, Shawcross or Turner as a younger alternative and future investment, one of those mentioned would be a perfect partner for Jags in years to come!

Fernandes will be out for at least a month. He broke his fibula towards the end of last season but he was able to start pre-season training. Now he seems to have had a relapse and has a minor fracture in the same place.

Squad out to europa game

Travelling squad: Howard, Nash, Hibbert, Baines, Yobo, Duffy, Neville, Rodwell, Osman, Fellaini, Pienaar, Cahill, Gosling, Saha, Yakubu, Vaughan, Jo, Wallace, Baxter, Akpan, Agard, Turner

along with Phil Jagielka, Mikel Arteta and Victor Anichebe to come back i make that 26 plus at least two more this week if Mmoyesie gets 3out of 4 then we are near the thirty mark ...

now out of those that would not normally get a start
Agard - I think could be very special
Jose Baxter - on the ball is bueatiful to watch
Akpan is very tidy and MOM earlier this week for ressies
Wallace - looks sturdy
that also discounts Coleman.

All going to improve and add value to our squad ... makes me feel warm about our progress.

Last week, Everton submitted a request for a work permit for a Argentine, on loan, whom then it is reported that he and his club are not interested in a deal with Everton. Then we sign a Russian for £10 million and now have to wait while he requests a permit to work in the UK. Am I the only one confused with the way Everton go about things?

Getting a work permit for someone that's not going to join us. Why would they announce that they had a work permit without the assurance that the player would join us? We seem to always be in deals that never evolve into anything of substance.

Moyes has said he would like 4 more signings before the deadline. I don't believe that will happen. As for Kenwright, he must hate this time of year. The transfer window clearly indicates how impotent his administration of Everton is, he must pray for 1 September so that we can speculate who we will sign in January. That won't happen also.

Steven Jones
64   Posted 27/08/2009 at 09:32:56

John,
I hope, and believe you hope, you will have to eat your words ...
I must be the eternal optimist, but I beleive we have probably touched many opportunities in this and previous windows, doing much groundwork and homework so could be in a good posiiton, but with agents playing 2, 3 or five different options each for their players and all playing the waiting game, I can see how this happens. Let alone the clubs holding out for the best transfer fees in multi virtual auctions.

This time I think we have probably enough irons in the fire fitting Moyesies quality mark that we should get a good crop ... fingers crossed.

last night on Everton TV he looked v confident of getting 4-5 faces by Monday, so we can expect at least three!! :-)

65   Posted 27/08/2009 at 12:07:21

Phil, that’s exactly my point! Players get crazy salaries but if you want the best ’talent’ you have to pay the going rate.

The tax laws will hit these guys harder (spitting blood as I type!) because after their first few weeks wages they have to give 50% of what they earn back to the government for the rest of the year.

So they all try to get deals ’netto’ and put the tax burden back on the club. Which in turns means that the Lescott £24m doesn’t pay for many top salaries once transfer fees are accounted for.

Which means the best deals out there for us are for players already in that situation where we at least have a level playing field when we try to negotiate personal terms.
