Window musings

Comments (26)

So, August is nearly up, Lescott's gone, Bily'ov has signed, the water voles are being moved for DK, Distin and Hangeland are linked, Banega is sitting in front of his computer 'waiting' with his 'come and get me' plea, Moutinho is wondering what he's done wrong cos Mr Moyes hasn't rang this summer, and we are still in all the cup competitions...

It got me wondering about all the wonderful terminology which is unique to the football transfer window. From one day to the next I'm never sure if we are meant to be "swooping for Distin", "stalking Taylor", "monitoring Latchford", " keeping tabs on Banega", " tracking some norwegian bloke" or "manouvering for Carlos kickaball" - I'm sure you'll have some more to add!

Snubbed. That's the one that gets me every time. Who in normal conversation uses the word? Yet any player not coming on board is deemed to have "Snubbed Everton".

conceded defeat (usually followed by "in their pursuit of X" )

or...

a stumbling block ( this time, usually preceeded by wages may prove to be a )

how about
’ just the formality of a visa/work permit’

or

’personal terms have been agreed with x’

or

’x is being shown the facilities at Finch Farm and is going away to consider which of the 200 clubs he has already seen, suit him’

or

’x and y are about to be unveiled by Harry Redknapp after rejecting a move to Everton’

Great, eh?

What gets up my goat, so to speak are
’puts pen to paper’ , ’inked’ etc
Have you ever put pen to paper for a recorded delivery?

’Jetting’ in for talks.
Sending a ’delegation’.

This is a quality post Col, something to lighten the mood.

This one has yet to come...

"The Argentina playmaker Riquelme will fly into Merseyside today for last-gasp transfer window talks with Everton"
Shane Corcoran

A slight deviation from the post but a few of us have been enjoying Graeme Souness’ use of his own brand of football terminology when the good people at RTE decided to put him alongside Giles & Dunphy during last year’s champions league.
He started out by saying that Arsenal’s performance was a bit "tippy-tappy" which I think translated as nice to watch but without penetration. He then moved on to "leaving a bit on him...." which was to intentionally foul a player and finally "to do a number" meant to just get one over on an opponent. I’m enjoying myself (and annoying others) by adopting these terms into my every day routine.
Yes the quiet window has bored the balls of me.

’Thrash out personal terms’ -
sounds like they are having a fight. Explains our transfer nightmare. Billy doesn’t seem like the fighting type.

@ Sane

"Yes the quiet window has bored the balls of me" Apparently Ever Banega is saying exactly the same thing on some video clip doing the rounds on YouTube!!!!

"thinking of making an offer"...always seems like to much trouble to pick up the phone.

Or

"last minute bid", like they suddenly though is that the time, where the fucks me cash card.

But the best for me is

"monitoring the situation" like everyone is round a big table in white coats watching skysports news incase somebody bids more than them.

Hopefully we will bring a few more bodies in to join the group and move the project forward beofre the window slams shut

Fortunately the transfer window doesn’t apply to Everton: after all, God willing, we will be making the equivalent of three new signings over the next few months: Yak, Mikel and the Jags.

Everton have snapped up Plymouth youngster Gosling....i like that one. Used when the player is a virtual unknown?

Pending medical. Talking of which, has anyone else noticed poor Sharpy’s face when the EvertonTv section on the OS is buffering - looks like he had a stroke.

I think reports in the paper saying deadline day bid, but like a week earlier, as if managers actually say we will wait until the very last second to buy a player instead of now. That will convince them to sell to us.

Apparently Sr. Moutinho is too busy hammering free kicks past la Viola. Just saw a beaut five minutes ago.

Sigh.

"Is set to" or "Are set to", WTF does that mean?

Also "pip" and "launch". Transfer jargon.

The idea of ’jetting in for talks’ or sending a ’delegation’ to discuss personal terms... only in football.

Why does the transfer window always have to "slam shut"? Why can't it just close normally!
