Looks like we've got another! Had to laugh though when Elstone said the Chairman moved quickly!!

Should be a good signing, a player I've always liked. Just wish we'd done this months ago. Here's to an interesting few days.

Official site is reporting that a deal to bring Sylvain Distin to everton has been agreed with Portsmouth, the deal is subject to a medical. This is a good signing as we are bringing in someone with plenty of premier League experience who can slot straight into the team.

The official Everton site has revealed that a deal is now agreed for Distain. I'm personally a bit relieved that we now can throw Neville away from the centre back postion. Hopefully this can help a big deal.

It must be true as it's on the BBC website - we've now signed Sylvain Distin. 32 years old? circa £5m?

Does this represent a better or worse deal than taking Richard Dunne back on the same terms?

My opinion? A good move. Experienced, committed, proven leadership AND...he's a left footer, which adds needed balance to the back line.

With the OS being down, surely we haven't signed Messi!!!!

More than happy with this deal!

We have replaced Lescott with as good a player here guys, very similar but in my honest opinion he is faster, fitter, stronger and more expeienced. Defo captain material.

What a back four, we could even use Yobo at right back as well as Neville, option galore plus Gosling looked good there tonight too!!!

A good, solid signing. More of a stop gap, than anything. That said though, he will give us consistency. It tells me, that Rodwell is being primed for the future CB position, and being given a chance to develop. Quite a lot of CB’s play defensive mid early in their career’s. He should be ready by the time Distin has passed his sell by date.

I didnt watch the match, but I am concerned at Baines form of late. He seems very uncomfortable both on and off the ball. And with nobody to challenge him, he may be getting complacent.

Distin is fine signing.Lescott won’t be missed.

Distin is a reasonable signing...if a bit past his sell by date..doesn’t exactly fit the Moyes M.O in terms of age...for that reason I think he’s not the Lescott replacement - I think there may be more to come.

Good signing though.

Distined for greatness?

Steve Edwards
10   Posted 27/08/2009 at 20:13:49

Fanando Torres thinks Distin was a great signing as well. Last time Portsmouth played Liverpool I felt embarassed for poor Silvain he was that bad. Anybody who witnessed the game will know what I’m talking about. By the way, this guy is 33 not 31 years old and 5 million is a lot for somebody of his age and failing ability. In my opinion this is nothing but a desparation buy and a waste of money. I feared that this would happen.
Steve Edwards
11   Posted 27/08/2009 at 20:35:48

Just to correct the above post he will be 33 on the 16th December 2009.
Shaun Wright
12   Posted 27/08/2009 at 20:37:17

He's not 33, he's 31, his birthday is 17th December 1977 which makes him 32 in December.
Fran Mitchell
13   Posted 27/08/2009 at 20:29:10

16 December 1977 was the Date Distin was born. So that makes him 33 how exactly?

A good signing, pace and solid defensively. Can offer cover at left-back and has bags of experience in Premier League, but however has never really experienced European Football.

He would view this move as his last chance for silverware and his last big challenge.

The fact that he is left-footed is essential, Yobo is a great defender but is unreliable on his left foot, and Baines looks atlot less composed without the assurance of a left footed defender covering him. It really makes a difference to the balance of the defense.

I expect another defender to be signed, probably a young one.

Oh and steve edwards, then I guess you would reject Vidic if offered, as he a a mare against Torres last season. And look at Ferdinand for England, bloody hell wouldnt touch him with a barge-pole.

Sometimes defenders have bad games, sometimes strikers have excellant games at the same time, thus compounding the misery (ala Torres vs Everton last seasons 1st derby). But for 7+ seasons Distin has proved a very solid premier league defender. We will get 3 good years out of him, so for 1.65million per season its not too bad a fee.
Steve Edwards
14   Posted 27/08/2009 at 20:47:24

I stand corrected. In that case he must have had a hard life as he played like he was 41 against the red shite. In other words his best days are well behind him.
Malcolm Evans
15   Posted 27/08/2009 at 20:54:04

I very much doubt we have paid 5 mill up front, its probably spread over god knows how long.
A good signing if even for only 2 to 3 years.
Steve Edwards
16   Posted 27/08/2009 at 20:55:59

Thats a lot of money even if you spread it out you’ll still have to pay it. You may get two or three years out of him and you’ve got nothing to sell on. I simply don’t rate him. Malcolm if you saw him playing against Liverpool, I can’t believe you would still fancy him.

Scanning through various transfer blogs, I have came accross many Everton fans who have friends at the club, people working in various clerical departments, airports and even actual 'cant be named for leagal reasons' first team players and coaching staff etc. Apparently, these are the Definites: Taylor is to sign in next 48 hours, undergoing a medical at the moment.
  • As is Turner of hull for £7mil.
  • And Senderos too for £6mil.
  • Hutton is on the verge of signing, along with Bentley
  • We are also signing Fernandes on loan
  • Defour for a club record fee
  • Teko Modise has also signed a 2-year deal, we are just waiting for paperwork.
Possible: Everton are hoping, but not guarenteed Van der Vaart (and his 120k per week wages), Tuncay, Jenas and Huddlestone.

So ontop of Bily and the near certain Distin, we are signing 3 more centre backs, a right back, 4 midfielders and are 'hoping' to sign a striker and 3 other midfielders. So thats 5 defenders, 5 midfielders and a striker this transfer window.

Must have been a banking error, when city transferred the money into Everton's account they accidently put £240million and never noticed, and we're spending it before they do.

Also, more than one have backed up their claim saying 'I mentioned last week that Lescott would sign for City before the window shut'... because none of us ignorant souls would have imagined such a deal taking place.

Steve Edwards - I dodn’t see Distin against the shite but I did one Joleon Lescott against Arsenal and he is a £24m player.
Paul Gladwell
19   Posted 27/08/2009 at 21:19:07

Steve, Vidic was made to look like a bag of shite by Torres last season remember? as where many others.
I made a point of going on Pompey fan
sites as they are the ones who know better they you or me and they are gutted he is leaving.
Dave Roberts
20   Posted 27/08/2009 at 21:16:36

While I hate to admit it, Torres on his day can make any centre-back look like a novice (remember Vidic?). The good news is though, he doesn’t have an awful lot of those kind of days!

As a final word on Lescott (at least for me) Shitty signed the ’wrong’ player and paid way, way over the odds...far more than he is worth. Jagielka is the man, he is a better defender than Lescott, he reads the game better, he is a leader and I don’t think he is a shithouse like his erstwhile partner.

I’m almost glad Jags was injured or a lot of clubs would have been after him this summer!
Roger Domal
21   Posted 27/08/2009 at 22:35:24

Dave Roberts....spot on! If any of the injured players had made it through last year unscathed we would have had the transfer offers coming in bushels. Arteta when healthy last year was at the pinnacle of his game, Jags the same.

I liked Lescott a lot, and his goals were something else to behold in big spots for us last year, but he’s just average as a CB and City will soon find out what his true calling is.

I’m more concerned that the Joe Yobo we are now seeing is a shadow of his former self. He was highly rated two seasons ago, but his time on the subs bench really took the piss out of him, and he hardly looks to be the same player. I was always confident in him, and could count his mistakes on one hand, but now I need hands, toes and both feet to count.

Well, we need to get the back 4 set, and then we’ll start our climb back up the ladder out of range.
David Barks
22   Posted 27/08/2009 at 22:54:48

Distin is a good, solid addition. Not meant to be a savior, but definitely a good player to add depth. As for Yobo, I wouldn’t be too concerned about him long term. It’s early in the season, and he’s being partnered with Neville who is not a CB. So that’s going to have an effect. Right now, I’m obviously disappointed with our start to the league season, but so relieved to get to the group stages given how our form in England has been. We just need to get a couple more players in now, keep getting healthy, and Everton will be strong going forward. And I share the sentiments regarding Lescott, I think it’s a bit of a blessing that Jagielka was injured to start the season as he is far better than Lescott. We got one hell of a deal in that sale.
Jon Gorman
23   Posted 27/08/2009 at 22:54:17

Desperate signing. Don’t get me wrong, I rate him, but £5 million for a 31-year-old? I don’t care how the deal is structured.

He’ll do a job this year, and maybe even next, but there is no significant mileage signing.

Would have been good a few years back when he left City on a free, or if we could have got him for about a million now.
James Bowman
24   Posted 28/08/2009 at 00:53:50

I also agree Dave Roberts, Lescott was always the one destined to be bid for. Glad its over to be honest. If he is that great, why was City the only ones bidding? Surely Villa could have tempted him and they seem to be reported to be linked with every defender in the PL and in no shortage of cash.

I’m sure I read on one of the many reports that Distin is/was a captain, so in that respect he fits the Moyes signing. I also read that we moved for Distin because we had a £10mil bid for Boro’s Wheater turned down, although I have to say it was the mirror!

I’m sure Distin will prove a good signing; just cause he’s getting on doesn’t mean he isn’t worth the money. He has won silverware, although short of European experience but plenty of PL experience... I’m sure if he clears off the line to win us the Europa (whatever it is!) Cup, he will be worth three times the amount!

I hope Fran is right, that would be like having another team... wonder if we could enter the Spanish league too? JOKE!

Happy we’ve signed Distin. Good experience CB, just what we need.

Jags reads the game well and more vocal, but Lescott better player overall. His 10 goals will be missed. But as they say, no point shedding tears on past events. We move on, COYB!

if not sure if Distin is worth the price. Anyhow this is yet to know.

I hope DM give us a surprise with Moutinho! This will make the day!

I just spoke with my ’source’ who just informed me Distin was having a medical this week! Some use she is.

Can I just put 2 and 2 together on this Friday morning? I think it’s funny we’ve let Stoke get Huth. Also this link with Vaughan and Stoke hasn’t gone away. Does anyone think there’s a chance we might get Shawcross then?

I am a little bored.

28   Posted 28/08/2009 at 09:32:21

Listen- Distin is a great signing, regardless of the price, at least 3 years left in him (remember Goughie, Paul Power) He’ll slot straight into the team on the left side and give us a presence at corners and free-kicks. He will also cover for Yobo’s many mistakes as long as he sweeps behind him. He’s always looked comfortable on the ball and gives us some pace at the back.
Steve Edwards
29   Posted 28/08/2009 at 09:40:53

Alan - that crossed my mind as well. Not sure what Stoke have got at centre back but I would be happy to take Shawcross, although there have been a number of clubs sniffing around him.

Fran, if we got Defour, Bentley and Taylor I’d be made up with that

The Times reckons were in for Heitinga & Scott Brown
Heitinga as a replacement for Hibbert is a no-brainer. Anybody know much about Brown though or rate him?
Needless to say I’ll be monitoring the transfer window like some crazed lunatic over the next few days
Alan Clarke
31   Posted 28/08/2009 at 13:08:32

I have managed to find out from the medical staff that more medicals are planned this week at Finch Farm and they’re excited by who’s coming (I hope that rules out Scott Brown). They absolutely won’t say who though because the leak would easily be linked back to them. My source is useless.

Can Peter Griffin shed any light?
Ronan McGinley
32   Posted 28/08/2009 at 13:53:51

My source at Goodison told me that someone at the club is leaking information.

Interesting Ronan because my source wouldn’t leak anything.
Neal Sutherland
34   Posted 28/08/2009 at 19:03:47

Alan, if thats the case, maybe she should see a doctor?

Anyway! Sky mentioned Moyes said he was hopeful of adding at least one more before the end of the window. Anyone else hear this or are there any quotes? I thought with Bilyaletdinov wrapped up, he was then saying pre-Sigma he was hopeful of 4 more. Distin is in, so that leaves 2 or 3 surely.

I suppose the word hopeful leaves a lot of scope......

On City Talk at 18:00 tonight they said that the Benega deal was " done " and moyes also did an interview saying he expected another centre half in before the weekend was out. I can only think of Taylor or Wheater as surely no premier league team would let a central defender leave this late in to the season would they ??? Oops

I think it is more likely to be taylor as he can play in more than one position and Moyesee likes that.

Moyes also said in his interview that he bought Distin in because he was a left footer. He said the only other left footer was Bassong but because we didn’t have the Lescott money at that stage we couldn’t bid for him.

So I read that as Lescott was always going to be sold. If he hadn’t gone we would have had fuck all to spend this season.

Mr Kenwright your time has come. By all means get the best deal for yourself but do it asap for the sake of Everton and it’s fans. I don’t think that any of the signings this year have improved us as a team and by not giving the manager any money other than what is raised by selling his best players then this is all down to you.
Alan Clarke

I just saw the report on SSN about us signing Distin and Moyes hopes we'll have clearance for Bily before Sunday's game.

The report said Moyes hopes to have 1 more new signing before the window closes. I thought Moyes said 4 maybe more before we'd got Distin, so that's at least 3. Did anyone see today's press conference? Has Moyes shortened his list from 3 to 1?

Strange situation we find ourselves in isn't it? After selling the elephant man to City we suddenly have around £20 million quid to spend, that's including the money given to Wolves and the purchases of Distin an Bilyalet.... the Russian guy (assuming we already had around £12-14 million quid to spend). So with our big war chest who do we break the bank to sign, who would excite the fans and make my season ticket true value for money?

It's going to be a very interesting deadline day.........
