Even with 10 men, hopefully...

Gosling’s not looking too bad at RB so far.

Shaky start from the boys but Osman is poor as usual, his lack of quality in simple passes is awful.

How come Nev is outshining Yobo?
JY doesn’t look around and know where players are but Nev is contantly looking around.
Also, why no Vaughn?
Moyes yas quoted on the OS as saying this might well be ’his year’. well? go on then, play him!

Denying a goalscoring chance.
Poor play from our CBs, JY let the ball run through and it was picked up on the edge of the box by thier striker, through on goal 20 yards out. Hibbo chased back had to lunge in and caught him. Last man, straight red but Hibbo may well have got a touch
Graham Holliday
13   Posted 27/08/2009 at 17:44:43

Piss poor pass from Baines, Yobo stood looking at it rather than reacting...

Hibbert decided to lunge in to try and stop their front lad getting a free shot from edge of the box - he might have made a bit of contact with the ball - but a shambles nonetheless.

I do hope there’s another CB on their way, along with Distin. Can’t say I’m entirely delighted about Yobo being first choice until Jags gets back.

Liking the look of young Gosling at RB though, was never convinced by him as a winger...
Stephen Parris
18   Posted 27/08/2009 at 17:54:25

Blatantly Baines who is at fault for the sending off incident.....I wouldn’t be blaming Yobo for that too much though, although he perhaps could have reacted quicker, but then he wouldn’t have expected that really !!

Still atleast it gets Hibbert off the pitch, haha, and i’m rather impressed with Gosling at RB so far.....why have we been playing Hibbert there instead of him ?!?! Might be something to look at now ?

Who said Osman was playing poor ?!?! Come on now, lets be serious, Osman has had a good half and at no point has he been poor......nice to see him work some magic to prove just that...lovely bit of skill to get past the two players, and great composure and vision to pick out Pienaar...lovely finish Stevie !!! You are truly a little genius !!

19   Posted 27/08/2009 at 17:58:53

For those who missed the Hibbo incident, it was more or less like this:

Some nice passing to feet from Sigma puts a striker through on goal on the left side of the box. Hibbo tracks back and tackles the striker from behind just outside the box as the striker is running on goal.

He may have got a little toe on the ball but he brings the striker down doing so. Straight red from the ref who deems it a clear goalscoring opportunity denied for Sigma.

Can’t argue really, Hibbo and Neville should have been better positioned, Hibbo should have made sure he got a cleaner hold of the ball when making the tackle.

Poor Sigma, we’re probably playing better without Hibbo than with him.
Christopher Brierley
20   Posted 27/08/2009 at 18:04:04

Baines has been a total liability in this game so far. It was a cock up from him that got us down to 10 men in the first place. Lets hope he gets his arse in gear for the second half.
Alex Quigley
21   Posted 27/08/2009 at 18:07:39

A genius response by Pat Nevin at half time to Mark Hughes’ suggestion that Lescott was the best centre half in the Prem ; "I’m not even sure he was the best defender at Everton! Jagielka (was rightly) the player of the year."

Oh for the love of Leon!

Looks a far better centre mid player but you’re right Anthony always shines against mid to low table sides. A good reserve / sub. Felli’s not my favourite but looks twice the player in a flat four.

Rodwell has an undoubtedly bright future and even if the other three turn into squad players it’s looking good for Everton.

63   Posted 27/08/2009 at 18:49:18

@ Steve Jones - That’s a decent theory as Stoke were in for Vaughan earlier this Summer.

I don’t know much about Shawcross’s defensive abilities but a quick glance at his stats show that he’s a defender that chips in with the odd goal and as long as Moyes teaches him the finer arts of defending, I would willingly sacrifice Vaughan in a part-ex for him.

Without wishing to join in the paranoia/misery stakes on here, did anyone else notice that no-one (on the pitch) celebrated with Pienaar, and that he looked pretty miserable when he came off?
Dan Brierley
67   Posted 27/08/2009 at 18:59:41

I am suprised about some of the Vaughan comments. He has been in the first team for 5 years now, and managed just 34 league games. Considering the strikers we have now, I say get rid. He is miles behind the Yak, Cahill, Jo and Saha as a striker. I’d rather see Agard and Baxter given the chance now.

The sending off was brought about by slack play by Baines and I didn’t think that Hibbert deserved to be sent off - having played the ball. However, his style of last ditch tackling is always liable to bring about cards. Notice the trend - Villa away, Wembley amd tonight. Carded early on and then walking a tightrope for the majority of the game / or sent off. The man is a liability.
Chris Jones
71   Posted 27/08/2009 at 19:23:35

@Paul

Peanuts made a B-line to celebrate with the Yak, who came off the bench to give him some skin, as they say.

@ Andrew

Given we played practically the whole match with 10 men, no, I don’t think we were poor. I thought Jo did what he had to and Osman made the goal that meant they had to score six (not a worry when we’re not playing the Gooners).

Job done, the Yak back on the pitch and no injuries. Hurrah!
Ciarán McGlone
72   Posted 27/08/2009 at 19:49:00

I know it was 10 men an all..by my god - that was hard watching.

I don’t know why Fellaini, Osman and Jo are getting plaudits - I though they were poor..Apart from the goal Osman did nothing but lose the ball, Jo couldn’t trap a medicine ball,,,and Fellaini’s ’jogging’ is really starting to get on my mamaries.

The only good bits were Pienaar, Gosling in right back and young wallace ...oh and yak being back on the pitch..

Lucky the opposition were cack.

As for Distin...probably a great signing as cover but I’m slightly worried he’s out replacement centre half - terrible memories of Weir getting picked everyweek flash before my eyes..

Gerry Western
73   Posted 27/08/2009 at 19:45:09

Thought Fellaini had a really good game I’ve been saying since the season kicked off that we should be playing 4-4-2 with Fellaini and Rodwell in the middle and Cahill in behind the striker. Lots of discussions surrounding the goal conceded. Regardless of who contributed there is no escaping the fact Hibbert went to sleep. He was way to slow off the blocks and paid the ultimate penalty. Thought Jo deserved some praise he worked tirelessly upfront on his own after the sending off.

A note on the Vaughan comments. I did read somewhere that Vaughan was being considered for a one year lone deal as a sweetener in an effort to secure one the centre backs we’ve been linked to. Unfortunately, I dismissed it as a load of nonsense and didn’t pay to much attention to the club named in the article. Could be there was some substance to it, but I’m still inclined to believe it was yet more tabloid garbage.
Chris Jones
74   Posted 27/08/2009 at 20:35:50

Fuckin’ell Ciaran must be hard going in your house mate?! I’m not Felli’s biggest fan but he dominated the centre with Jack.

You should be proud of the ten men who showed real guts and application to boss a game against the odds. Sigma weren’t great but they weren’t crap either.

Personally, I don’t think we need another centre-half — would sooner see a quality midfielder brought in.
Andrew Bankes
75   Posted 27/08/2009 at 20:38:39

Chris Jones

I have to disagree I’m afraid. We were fairly well organised (particularly as we were down to 10) but given the quality of the opposition our passing, hold up play and penetration was awful.

As pointed out above, apart from the goal Osman continually gave the ball away or fell over (as per usual), and the ball seemed to be allergic to Jo (the awful long balls weren’t much to go on though, granted) and he looks almost as slow as Osman!

I’ve generally try to avoid repeatedly singling out players for stick, but watching our performances of late I feel a horrible rage building inside of me when the same players keep on making the same stupid basic mistakes. As a team we can be almost embarrassing to watch sometimes. I hope to god we get a few new faces in and Moyes changes things round - both results and performance wise.
Thomas Christensen

Jo would have scored if he hadn’t have been fouled in the box during a first half when the ref was giving us nothing (free kicks, corners, throw-ins - you name it). He worked his sox off for us, one up in a 10 man team, he chased everything.

Gosling - we tend to forget, especially after "the" goal, was a RB when he came. He did well tonight and its an interesting idea for the future.

And I’ll vote for Cap’n Pip too. It could be his last game at CB tonight , possibly on Sunday, but he’ll be RB in the next Euro game I guess. But its good to know he can slot in there if needed (keeping Jack in midfield).

And a late word for poor old Villa. Drew a decent side to qualify against, and didn’t make it. Oh dear, what a shame, never mind.

Just thought I’d add a comment about Fellaini. Definately looks better in centre mid and looks very good on the ball, if we had pace on both wings it would suit him even more like he had at at Liege (Dalmat). However he does allow players to drift away from him - he always seems to follow the ball rather than another player who runs past him therefore a simple one-two can see him easily out of position.
Nick Broadhurst
83   Posted 27/08/2009 at 23:42:23

@ Ciarán

What match were you watching mate? Next to Pienaar, Fellaini was the best player on the pitch! Totally commanded the midfield.

Solid performance overall, especially considering we played with 10 men for over 80 minutes. Both goals were nice finishes.

Can’t wait for the draw tomorrow! COYB!!

I tend to agree with Andrew Bankes in that I don’t think we played particularly well. What was it with Howard continually pumping his goal kicks right up the middle of the park to Jo, where he lost pretty much every ball by been outnumbered 3 to 1. I wish I shared the same optimism as everyone else in Gosling but I see little to get excited about. Maybe i’m been a bit harsh on the youngster but he has no pace, no ball control, no awareness and his distribution is poor. Maybe sending him out on loan will do him good as I don’t think he will offer us much this season. Osman was poor as usual, getting knocked off the ball too easily, running into cul-de-sacs as per usual. If he couldn’t find Pienaar with a 10yd pass with that much time on the ball, then he shouldn’t be playing pro football at all. Pienaar was by far our best player again and I hope that some of the new boys we’re supposed to be bringing in are of the caliber of the little man.

------------------------
Yeah right.

@Nick

What match where you watching mate (I hate that phrase)...

Fellaini didn’t exactly do anything wrong with the ball once he got it..apart from the odd hospital pass...It’s his lack of closing down or finding space that really annoys me...he ’shrugs’ around the pitch and the players he is supposed to be closing down seem to have some kind of exclusion zone around them...I’d rather he got the odd yellow than behaved like a zombie.

I guess we both disagree on what constitutes effective midfield play - I think closing down and find space are necessary offensive and defensive duties - Fellaini didn’t do either. I was not watching a different game - tsssk!
