Everton: Howard, Hibbert, Baines, Yobo, Saha, Distin, Cahill, Neville, Pienaar, Osman, Rodwell Subs: Nash, Bilyaletdinov, Jo, Gosling, Fellaini, Duffy, Agard
Wigan Athletic: Pollitt, Thomas, Scharner, N'Zogbia, Gomez, Boyce, Bramble, Rodallega, Melchiot, Diame, Figueroa. Subs: Edman, Cho, Scotland, Koumas, Sinclair, Kingson, King
Suprised that Fellaini has been dropped, but were in need of 3 points today! Does anyone have a decent link?

I agree with Thomas regarding Cahill. Put him in his preferred position and see how he plays!!
He is just being wasted when he plays further back at the expense of Fellaini.
Let’s just hope we can get a goal here.

I’m sick of these rubbish starts to the season. Learn for gods sake Moyes/Round!
I was hoping for a top 8 finish this season (considering our poor attempt at squad improvement), but already I’m revising that down to a top 12 finish - and to be quite frank anything above 17th I’d take right now.
This isn’t good enough. You cant drop points to teams like Burnley and Wigan if you want to be taken seriously.
Tom Campbell

I think we will win this 2-1.
Saha or Cahill
Alec Laurie

James Marshall

The reason we’ve played it long from our fullbacks so much, is because of the way WIgan play. They push 2 players up on Hibbert & Baines which means they have to play it long at times.
What a surprise, Tom, Saha taken off for Jo.....

Not sure how much we deserved it, but that’ll do me. We just needed the three points, regardless of performance. We have to kick on from here though. Play like we did for the last 20 minutes for the full match, instead of not looking interested for most of the game.

Nathan, we played really well - their goal was totally against the run of play. Go and look at the stats and you’ll see we ran the game from start to finish mate.
We had about 18 shots to their 3 and they fouled us over 20 times to about 6 from us.
Colin Ryan
Posted 30/08/2009 at 16:58:14
We're only 3 points off a Europa cup spot now... What crisis??? Rodwell must start every game now. Best player on the pitch for me!

It was a good performance. Now hopefully we can kick on now and start our season.
Rob Murphy
Posted 30/08/2009 at 16:56:21
Is it just me or were Wigan a dirty fucking shower today kickin & foulin their way through the game? Serves the fuckers right, we got what we deserved unlike last week when we deserved a draw at least. Not a great performance but good for the confidence before the international break, our season begins at last. And Jack Rodwell was fucking IMMENSE today (apart from missing that sitter!!). What a player we have there lads.
John Gaulton

Colin, Great link tonight http://www.veetle.com/viewChannel.php?cid=4a99851079658 -
Got it as clear as day.
The old man and I sitting by the laptop yelling our boxes off is a sight to behold but havent tuned in for a link before.
Everton were bumped on Foxtel Aussie for the two games.
Second time in two weeks which is a piss off.
Great second half and even better result to get the season started.
James Marshall
Posted 30/08/2009 at 17:04:05
The boy Jack is gonna be a cracking player, he’s already so mature for one so young.
Rob, yeah Wigan were well dirty all game, especially in the first half - it was clearly their intention to play it rough and not let us play. They got what they deserved, a beating.
Neil Pearse
Posted 30/08/2009 at 17:02:46
Rodwell MotM by a mile. Fellaini made a very positive difference when on. Cahill better upfront. Hibbert excellent going forward (really). Osman woeful, surely now to the bench?
Good fighting performance. Now we are moving.
Nathan O'Hagan
Posted 30/08/2009 at 17:06:12
My link cut out a lot but from what I saw of the first half we looked neat enough but lacking in any cutting edge. A couple of really nice moves aside, I thought we saved the best for the last 20 minutes, but if those of you who had a better link and saw the whole game think we played well, then fair enough.
The main thing, though, was to get three points on the board, and to give ourselves something to build on. As horrible as the first two results were, I haven’t really been worried about how we’d do this season, we just needed a win to get the team's confidence up, and now we have, the season really starts here. COYB!!
Joel Webb

Good to see Rodwell backing up and also Timmy back lurkin in the box. I thought Hibbert was good and the Fella did well off the bench.

Now... let's destroy Fulham!
Rob Pendleton
Posted 30/08/2009 at 17:20:54
Rodwell is all class.
Timmy was much better one behind Louis
Jut saying to the old man how a minute can make such a difference to the rest of the week.
The complexion of the working week changed with the net bulging after Bainsey's cracker spot-kick.
Jo’s poster at the end would have topped it off but happier for the 3 points when at one stage I was praying for one.
Off to bed it’s 12:30am here and up for work at 4...
Dan Parker
Posted 30/08/2009 at 18:00:00
Bloody hell, that was a close one. We were all over them in the second half but left ourselves badly exposed to counter-attacks, we very nearly came a cropper again. Didn’t see the sense in taking Saha off but it’s Moyseys job, not mine.
Hibbert made a fantastic first touch cross which Timmy should have converted but it's the result that counts!
Rodwell awesome!
Dave Roberts

I was beginning to feel quite lonely as the sole member of the Fellaini appreciation society (or so it seemed) but hopefully after today I may have some company.
This lad changed the game for us today. From the moment he came on he changed a static incompetent performance into one of hope and prospects. He was winning headers and keeping the ball. He was winning tackles and placing intelligent passes. He was making chances and he was running into space and providing options. Even my anti-Fellaini mate had to admit after the game that Fellaini coming on was the difference between an ignominious result and three points.
I am not about to suggest that this lad is world class because I am not even sure what that means, but hopefully after today some of thoseEvertonians who doubt his value will reassess their opinion. We missed him when he wasn’t there at the start and we looked more composed, more assured and a better side when he came on.
He wasn’t the man of the match — Jack Rodwell was for me because he was the only dependable option for 90 minutes, but Jack couldn’t change a dire performance. Fellaini did and got us a victory and 3 points from nowt. Give this kid (for that is what he is!) a break and give him the credit he is due.
Yes, he lacks pace, sometimes he looks awkward... even ponderous, but he has football in his BRAIN which is sometimes just as important if not more important than having it in your feet.
Anybody want to join me in the FAS?
Neil Pearse
Posted 30/08/2009 at 18:08:31
I’m with you Dave, sign me up. You’ve got it right: he has a football brain. Awesome throughball for Jo which he should have scored. Watched him waiting for Hibbert to catch up and then laying off perfectly for Hibbert’s fine cross.
The problem is where to play him? What is he? Not as good a defensive midfielder as even Neville, or as good an attacking midfielder as Cahill. Perhaps the solution after all is to play him right bang slap in the middle of midfield alongside Rodwell? With Neville (I hope maybe Heitinga) behind, and then Cahill and Saha / Jo in front. Interested in others’ thoughts.
Gerry Western
Posted 30/08/2009 at 18:41:36
Dave, I’ve been praising Felliani since his debut and find the criticism leveled at him to be totally unjustified, more often than not it’s linked to his fee. Today he was awesome his intervention turned the game on its head. Although we’d pegged them back I never really felt we were capable of getting a win until his introduction. Rodwell was superb and indeed I’d posted on another thread that Fellaini and Rodwell would be my automatic choices for the midfield births. Also was hoping Cahill would play behind the striker and that looked much better also. The question is will Moyes stick with Fellaini and Rodwell or will Neville and Osman get the nod once more, I wonder.
Tony I'Anson
Posted 30/08/2009 at 18:46:51
When the transfer window closes, I reckon Osman and Hibbert will gracefully accept their squad player roles that is bound to happen if yet another 2 or 3 players turn up.
Lionel Luthor
Posted 30/08/2009 at 18:55:47
Today was at times frustrating, but a win is a win. Some plus points in the role Screech played when he came on. Distin did well on his debut. Cahill played in his favoured position.
Can’t be arsed with the few negatives, they’ve been done to death.
Andrew Bankes
Posted 30/08/2009 at 19:03:00
From the other side of the ground I was convinced (admittedly after reading Moyes’s comments in the programme) I could see Banega watching the 1st half from one of the exec boxes..... he had the long hair and a decent tan and was wearing a white t-shirt.... can anybody put me out of my misery and tell me it was one of Big Vic’s mates or some other no-mark?!?!
Martin Berry
Posted 30/08/2009 at 19:07:44
I thought we played quite well today. The match stats show we dominated the game and were unlucky not to win by a greater margin. An encouraging performance and I thought Fellani was superb when he came on. Bily didn’t get much of a chance but let's face it he only trained yesterday for the first time so any critism of Moyes on phone-ins is a joke. Are season starts now!!! We have a lot to do to get in the top 6 but hopefully with a couple of new signings it’s a posibility. COYB.
David McKitt
Posted 30/08/2009 at 19:14:04
Andrew to answer your question — no, it wasn't Banega, unless he got a very fast flight back to Spain... he's on the box at the mo, playing for Valencia and helped create their 1st goal.
Dave Wilson
Posted 30/08/2009 at 19:13:35
Dave / Neil
Knew if we lived long enough we’d agree.
Fellaini : better than Teddy Sheringham at his age, soooo much more to come from him. I underastand the critics - he drives me mad too. but the boy has a football brain
David McKitt
Posted 30/08/2009 at 19:25:09
May I also just add it's my first time watching Banega, and I must say I've been impressed. Good control, some nice thru balls and comfortable on the ball...
Keith Glazzard
Posted 30/08/2009 at 19:31:57
Fellaini - booked 245 times last year for ’persistent fouling’.
If this had been applied to Wigan today the game would have been abandoned as they would have run out of players. Obviously planned from before the game, they were a disgrace.
Justice was done.

Did Rodwell get MotM?
Dave Roberts
Posted 30/08/2009 at 19:55:32
Keith,
You have to blame the match officials. Last week we had a referee excusing himself for giving a penalty for Eduardo diving by saying he consulted the linesman! I can just imagine that conversation.
’That WAS a penalty wasn’t it?’
’Err....yes, if you say so’.
Then we had fourth official and a referee yesterday sending off Wenger for kicking a bottle!
Today we had a team determined to chop Everton down at the hint of a threat and a referee who seemed equally determined to do nothing significant about it.
All different officials I agree, but until referees are held properly accountable for their ’mistakes’ (sic) nothing will ever change.
Julian Wait
Posted 30/08/2009 at 21:11:52
Not necessarily a Hibbert fan, but have to defend him on the goal; Osman let his man go and Hibbert only moved when he realized that and it was too late.
Clearly an Osman lapse, and if you could see Osman’s face on FSC you’d say the same. Hibbert actually played alright today, he’s just getting hung out to dry by Osman on a regular basis.
