Does Marouane Fellaini Have An Everton Future?

Comments (37)

That might sound weird considering he was Everton's Young Player of the Season last year but where exactly does Fellaini fit into the Everton team?

Fellaini has been used to some effect as a second striker. Its a role he can play thanks to his height but long term surely he can't stay there. Cahill is a better goalscorer from that position and it would be nice to think that eventually Everton will have two strikers worth playing up front.

So if that role is not long term for Fellaini then he'll have to be moved back down into midfield. The question is does he have the ability to play a conventional midfield role?

Fellaini is not a fast player and he's not got the best engine either so its difficult to see him being a box-to-box type player.

Fellaini is also not great at tackling so its unlikely he'll have a defensive midfield role (especially since it looks like Rodwell may take that role).

At times Fellaini can look comfitable on the ball and pick out a decent pass but he's a long way from Arteta's standard.

I personally think Fellaini will struggle to find a long term role in the Everton side. I was hoping he was going to be a craft-and-graft type player like Don Hutchinson but I really don't know if he's talented enough.

What do the rest of you feel about Fellaini? Does he have a long-term role to play?

I’ve been thinking the same thing. For €15m and our record signing, he should be in the first team. However, on ability, I don’t think he is good enough.

As mentioned, he doesn’t seem good enough to have a position. At the moment, I see him as the supporting striker, the Cahill role. However, Cahill is much better in this position, and Timmy needs to be played there and not in centre midfield. Therefore, I currently only see Fellaini as a back-up to Cahill, but long-term successor to the role.

I’d like to see us play with two actual strikers. So the question could just as easily be does Cahill have an Everton future.

I’ve no idea what role Moyes has in mind for Screech. At times he looks lost and way off the pace. Other times, he looks composed and has an eye for a pass.

I definitely think we would see a better Fellaini if we had a settled midfield capable of passing the ball. Too many hospital balls or hoofing going on for him to show any sort of continued quality. (WHY oh WHY didn’t we sign Defour instead?!!!)

Here’s a thought........why not approach Standard and ask if they would consider a loan swap for a season with the view to us buying Defour next summer? Fuck it, let’s just buy Defour and loan them Screech!!

The sad thing is I’m not joking!

Of course he does... I just don’t see him playing a huge part in the team this season, like last season. I see him as the future defensive midfielder to be honest, just he needs a hell of a lot of time to adapt. He does have some strengths — passing is good, heading is very good and physically he’s good.

Just Moyes did the mistake in thinking he would adapt in a defensive midfield role quite quickly, when it would clearly take at least another season, I just hope he does.

Just a bit off topic, I was listening to the game today on the radio, so didn't know the details, but where did Fellaini play once he came on? And did he play alrite?

Ben, I thought Fellaini was great when he came on. I know he has been very poor recently but a vast improvement today.

Felli was class today when he came on. To be honest the criticism he gets is way over the top. He very rarely gives the ball away, his chest contol is class, scores goals, is only 21 (I think). The pass he put through to Jo when he missed near the end shows he has good vision. Yes, he has faults and can improve loads but he is a very talented 21 year old.

Cahill is the one, at the moment, who needs a kick up the arse. He’s been very poor so far this season.

Also, it’s a squad game.

What's this nonesense about him not having a good engine? Only for him making it as a footballer he was going to be a long distance runner for his country.

I think he has huge potential and see him in the future playing a similar role to Ballack. Fellaini doesn’t shoot enough in my opinion but when he does he seems to have a decent shot on him and could potentialy score a lot of goals if encouraged to shoot more as well as chipping in with the usual goals with his head.

His passing is also very good and his height is vital for corners and set peices in both boxes, he's still a young lad, we’re only 3 games into the season and he is getting written off, its ridiculous.

Agree with Ryan there. Felli was good when he came on today. Seemed to have plenty of energy and played some very good passes.
Also agree with the Cahill comment. Off colour without a doubt!

Spot on with your last sentence, Ryan. It is a squad game.

He has a future in our squad if only because he offers something different with his height and strength as well as having a decent touch and eye for a pass.

At the moment, I prefer seeing him as a sub. He is off the pace a bit so can struggle against faster, fitter opposition when starting the game. However, as a sub, with opposition energy used, this ceases to be a problem.

He is a very usefull sub to have too. He unsettles the opposition and distracts them. This could be very useful if the game was not going our way.

As for the price paid for him. It is irrelevant. He is either worthy of a place in the team/squad or he isnt. The price tag does not make him any more or less deserving. If you think too much was paid, that is something to blame Moyes for, not the big Fella.

I remember when Moyes signed him, he called him a ’box-to-box’ midfielder. That’s what he probably is, but Moyes doesn’t play with a formation that accommodates that type of player. The 4-5-1 has the two deeper mids (Rodwell & Neville) and one attacking mid (Cahill). When we play this formation, which is normally always, the big Fella doesn’t really fit into those positions. If we want the best out of our €15M man, then we need to accommodate for him and change the way we play.

Based on his performance today and some of his past games, I think he almost certainly has a future. I think he will probably play behind the striker(s), in a Cahill-type role. Don't forget, Cahill is past his peak and Fellaini is still very young.

In terms of abilities, he is a far better passer than Cahill, he holds the ball up better, and I don't think he is any slower than Cahill... but that's not to say he’s quick either. His gait makes it look like he's slow, but he's not. Both players are excellent finishers.

When he came on today, the quality of our game was much better. The ball stuck in the final third due to his physical presence and ability and he played some quality forward passes, on the deck creating opportunities for us.

I have to say I’m not absolutely 100% convinced about him though, my main criticism is that he never seems to jump his height. He is quite often out-jumped by much smaller players. I hope this is something the coaches can work on.

I think we will see a much better Fellaini when Arteta returns. Like Saha, I don't think he is suited to the hoofball, head-tennis 100 mph game we so often play. Luckily the quality of our midfield is improving with the likes of Rodwell, Pienaar and now (hopefully) Bily, being in the pass & move camp.

Cheers Ryan et all about Fellaini’s contribution, from the guys on 5 Live, he did seem lively. Saying that though, Cahill sounded like he played well too, and in my opinion, only hasn’t played that well, because he’s playing where Rodwell played today, which is of course out of position for him

Hmm, Cahill & Fellaini: two decent but flawed players vying for the same position. One is 29, the other 21… and you’re wondering if the young one has a future. Is it really that hard to answer?
Mike Allison
14   Posted 30/08/2009 at 22:47:46

Anyone who saw him today wouldn’t be asking that question. He looked strong, quick and good on the ball. His close control and vision (in contrast to Cahill’s) was excellent.

There are some bizarre and incorrect things said about Fellaini. He would pride himself on his engine and is very much a ’box to box’ player. Unfortunately, as Moyes often does, he’s been used incorrectly as an up front target man for the hoof all too often. On today’s evidence, the future is Rodwell and Fellaini in the middle of the park.

If he was only 6’1" and didn’t have the hair, but did everything else the same, I’m convinced people would have different opinions of him, it seems image is everything and he projects an ungainliness that actually doesn’t reflect his ability.

Fellaini is only 21 years old. He’s got huge potential. The fact that he can play as a defensive midfielder, attacking midfielder, or second striker, means that he’s versatile, which means that there will always be room for him. If anything it adds competition which our team needs. He’s only had one season for us.

After today’s performance do you seriously need to ask this question. We were struggling to get a result today. His intervention in the middle of the park turned the game on its head. He was simply awesome. Cahill too demonstrated that his best position is just behind the striker. How on earth do people arrive at the conclusion that he’s somehow in competition with Cahill for that role in the team?

As for what happens when we have two strikers, am I missing something here? Haven’t we got about four, albeit two who’d be considered fully fit. It may have escaped the notice of some but Saha and Jo simply hasn’t worked to date. Cahill is tailor made for that role. He’s had an injury of late but there were clear signs today that he is returning to form.

Fellaini and Rodwell are the future of EFC, assuming of course we can hold on to them. Any club with Champions League ambitions will aim to have a number of players to call upon throughout the course of a season. It's called strength in depth. There seems to be an idea here that you only need one player in each position. We need to rid ourselves of that mindset if we are seriously contemplating future success.

What Fellini ain’t and never will be is a Ferguson/Sharp target man and that’s how he’s being played at the moment, with 40yrd hoofs (usually from Yobo) that presumably he’s got to get his head on to knock down to Saha/Jo go back to last season when Standard played the RS and were unlukcky to lose and screech ran the midfield, rarely giving the ball away breaking things up etc changing the direction of the play, maybe it was a one game fluke but he looked a great midfielder that night.

Ryan and Co,
The reason Cahill has been a bit quiet lately is because he’s been playing out of his normal position. He is the most versatile player in the team and has been covering in the defensive midfield role, thats why he hasn’t been scoring of late.
He played his normal position last night and was close to MOM, and looked dangerous all game.
As usual he is our Mr Fixit and his own game suffers because of it.

Dick
you’re talking about our leading goalscorer last season with 9 goals.

he may confuse the supporters sometimes but he also confuses and rattles the opposition.

I would also argue he has a great engine not particularly quick but great stamina and I bet the stats would show he covers more distance than anyone but Pienaar in a game.

His passing can really open things up at times and unlike a few of our other players is always looking gor a forward pass rather than pass back to Yobo for it to be hoofed up the pitch.

As we improve the MF with more quality I think we’ll see the best of him.

I’m glad to see the general support of Fellaini on here — it was starting to seem like he was going to be the new Hibbert / Osman who everyone criticises. Seriously, the guy is only 21, has come over to an intense league like the EPL (not being able to communicate with his team mates properly) and had a pretty decent first season I think. He isn’t, at present, our best midfielder, but he his peak years are well ahead of the lad. We should hang on to him for as long as possible!

Welcome back to your rightful position, Tim Cahill. Timmy did more in one game than Fellaini has done in all the games he's played in that position.

I've said on this site many times, Fellaini is like a centre-half in midfield but he would not even make a centre-half because he cannot tackle. I'd really like the lad to do well but I can only see him coming off the bench for the last 10 or 15 minutes, as he did today.

22   Posted 31/08/2009 at 01:25:32

Fellaini actually played Def Midfield when Liege played Liverpool last year and he stood out then! OK, he may not be the best tackler in the world due to his clumsiness but he’s still only young so in time who knows? I’d like to think he’ll be a player who can play all across the midfield - Especially with us having such a small squad.

Is it just me or does every Evertonian at the moment just want to scrutinise their players?

I watched the game today and Fellaini completely changed the game when he came on. I dont know where al this unfair criticism of the lad is coming from! By the way from the sound of it he was quite ill over the summer and he lost a lot of weight according to Moyes. Moyes stated that they were really worried about him!

Today, when he played Jo in for that chance on goal that he hit the upright with, the pass he played was inch-perfect. I would also add that he looked like he was motoring just before he played the pass. Give the lad a chance and recognise the fact that his first season was very good. I bet you he will become one of our star players in the not tool distant future.

He infuriates with his lackadaisical style, but he thinks about the game, he can see and deliver a pass and has already proved he has an eye for goal.
He’ll be fine as soon as DM realises he’s not Big Dunc.

I think Felli with keep improving and grow into a role. He may well be the long term replacement for Cahill but the guy has a number of qualities and will need to keep developing. Give him a break!

I feel that Felliani does have much to offer. It was for all to see that he changed certain patterns when he came on yesterday.

He is young, and he is still learning, and still holding his place in the Belgian national side. And of course he has certain weakness, but he is not giving the same amount of silly free-kicks, as last season. I think Moyes has great faith in him, and he will win over the fans, when the whole team get going.

We expect new faces to appear, after Tuesday, and when the team settles, let's hope its sooner than later, results improve.

Felliani will have a major role if DM has faith in him and allows him to play in midfield. He was the major reason we turned the game around yesterday. He demanded the ball and was involved in most of our best moves. He is developing an excellent understanding with Pienaar and Jo, and will only get better if we get behind him and don’t look to highlight his mistakes. I get the feeling that some on here want to see him fail and for us to have wasted the money. Strange Evertonians.

Moyes takes a lot of abuse for not having a plan B. To me, Moyes now has different options and different formations he can employ for different games and different situations. Moyes is far too stubborn anyway to think Fellaini won’t work out.

Moyes’s substitutions yesterday won it for us. Fellaini was excellent yesterday making driving runs forward through the midfield and Jo won us the pen.

Credit to Moyes.

Fellaini height adds a completely different dimension to Everton's game, his performance against Burnley was abysmal and Moyes's decision to drop him for the Wigan game payed off, as when he came on he performed well.

On his day, Fella wins endless amounts of headers off goalkicks, wins possession back off the opposition, makes runs and occasionally (9 times last season) can get us a goal; however he does tend to disappear in games. At the age of 21, having made a great impression in his first season and being involved in the Belgium set up, Fellaini has Worldclass Potential.

31   Posted 31/08/2009 at 15:25:30

At some time in the future, Fellaini will be the vital piece in a good team. I hope it’s us. He is young and awkward but has great potential. He also has good stamina and (watch the 6 on 2 break against us yesterday, he tries to get back if we are caught upfield).
Mike Allison
32   Posted 31/08/2009 at 17:04:57

He disappears because he’s been used in an unfamiliar position. He should play deeper, box-to-box, and not be an off-the-striker-target-man.

I’m not too worried about him winning headers off goalkicks because (a) despite their (lack of) height Saha and Cahill both do that anyway and (b) the second ball after the header is far more important.

33   Posted 31/08/2009 at 17:03:07

Felli does have some great strengths and for me is a talented footballer. His passing be excellent and at times very incisive, first touch can also be excellent, his height and strength worries defenders and you can’t knock his scoring record.

However he does at times look ungainly, but the lad can’t help his size and he wasn’t helped by being played all over the place in his first year due to our injury problems. I think he suffers due to us not yet having pinned down his best position. Don’t forget his age, still a lot to come from this 21 year old I feel.

21, 6 5", great engine, and shows from time to time good vision and ball control. Half the players in the premiership cant kick a ball but are strong and can run alday. Wait until you have arteta the playmaker rodwell the ball winner and felli the engine with pienaar and bily on the wings

Obviously Moyes will give him every opportunity to improve on a so-so season last year. After all look at all the games Osman has gotten and he cost nothing, this has to be a breakout season for Fellaini. There has to be something more to come to justify the price they paid for him and if there is no significant improvement then Everton should cut their losses and sell him to Man City who will probably pay over the odds for him and keep Everton’s losses to a minimum. Hopefully, though he will mature and become a factor at Goodison.

He was a panic buy on transfer deadline day and at best is a very average player...
As for turning the game on its head, hardly, we were playing a piss-poor Wigan team.
I would cash in asap as we have a much better and cheaper option in Rodwell...

Just my opinion folks...
