The one that got away?

Comments (18)

Given how we have performed so far, and bearing in mind the players qualification (or non-qualification) to play in the Europa Cup, which player do you think we would have benefitted from most of those that we were linked with prior to Sept 1?

I think we would have been extremely happy if we could have bagged Banega. He looked real class against Sevilla and slotted into midfield alongside Arteta I think we could have had a diamond and a real touch of quality.

What about Naughton, Van der Vaart, Huth, Wheater, Hutton, Delph??? No, not in the same league as Banega. We will finish 2 places lower without him, but I will still settle for seventh??!!

I agree John, based on his performance againt Valencia, Banega would have been a fantastic signing. He would have slotted perfectly into the deep lying playmaker role that Arteta carried out with distinction before his injury at Newcastle. Once Arteta returns however, I’m not sure it would have worked with Banega along side him as it would have been a very lightweight albeit fantastically talented central pairing.

Arteta really shone alongside Neville who was happy to sit in front of the back four, break up play and play a simple pass. While Neville would be a safe bet alongside Arteta, I’m looking forward to see Rodwell play that role.

To answer your question I’d go for Eljero Elia. a young Dutch winger once linked in the Sunday papers. You may have seen him come on and bag against Scotland the other night. Rapid quick, direct and skillful he’s the kind of player that would have offered something different and made our 4-5-1 look like a 4-3-3.

That said, I’m looking forward to seeing Bily in action.

1. Cristiano Ronaldo. Really kicking myself about that one.
2. Kaka. Not sure where he would fit into the side though.
3. Ibrahimovic. Don’t really need a striker with pace, good in the air and with the ball at his feet.
4. Albiol. Didn’t need a class centre half this year.
5. Diego, Felipe Melo, Maxwell, Huntelaar, Sneijder..... Jesus the list goes on.......

Who gives a shite. We have got what we have got.

Why are you going to be happy with 7th? We had a torrid start last year and I still believed we were up for a challenge on 4th, which was right. This season, 4th is still the target. Aim for 7th, you end up nowhere.

The one that really got away was Fernandes....

We’d be a far better team now, and we probably would’ve spent the Fellaini money elsewhere...

I don’t understand how you can justify that with Banega in the side we would finish 5th rather than 7th without him. The kid's had a few good games for Valencia. Let’s not get carried away about speculating who we could have got and just get on with what we’ve got.

Not so sure myself. Banega is a quality player, but there is no guarantee he would settle into this league and so on. Also, if Arteta is to continue playing the position he did last season then he doesnt need his like for like playing along side him, he needs players like Neville, who will always look to give him the ball, but then do more of the digging in when we are under pressure. I hope Rodwell can eventually be that player but with a bit more class with the ball than what Neville has.

Ibrahimovic — are you having a joke? He not as good as what we’ve got.

Ciaran you hit the nail on the head there! Fernandes was the one that got away! ... and no, I can't see Fellaini would have been bought then.

I still remember the Arsenal game where fernandes dominated the midfield. : ) I know he has had his critics but personally I think he was one of the best players ever to play here.

Out of him and Neville, Osman, Cahill, Fellaini etc — I know who I would rather have in centre midfield! — Fernandes.

Count me as those who believed we blew it with Fernandes. He is the real 1 that got away. The link up play between him and Arteta would have been superb. Of course that would have meant we couldn’t have afforded this cracker we have called Felliani and would have had to drop Diego Osman. So no can’t have that!

The Kings Dock?

Only joking I’d have been delighted to see Cana sign for us to get Neville out of midfield. Also I think Subotic would have been an excellent replacement for lezza.

For all that he showed glimpses of real promise, I was never convinced by Fernandes. Let’s not forget that he had two decent opportunities to stake his claim, yet all he could consistently produce was inconsistency.

7th?? Are you mad??

I would like to concur with the view that Banega is the one that got away this time. Like Manny before him. I have seen the lad play and some of the things he does with the football is the stuff of the greats. I will not be surprised if Banega goes from strength to strength and becomes a household name. Another to lengthy list of talent that Moyes has spotted looooong before they became famous. Essien, Arshavin, Banega . . . you heard it here first! Unless of course you’re Moyesie, in which case you already knew :p

Van der Vaart, Moutinho, Defour, Fernandes, Arshavin & Delph.

There is a similar theme here. Creative midfielders. A player that can make something out of nothing and win any game.

The reason we are linked to these players, is that we are desperate for one!

We have Arteta, but it’s taken years to get him into his rightful position, and now he’s out injured for ages. Pienaar is similar, but again out on the wing, and inconsistent enough to think that is not his best position.

We have a squad full of hard working players. We have defensive midfielders, Neville and Rodwell. We have midfielders who can score goals, Cahill and Fellaini. Our wingers are hard working. Our most creative player at the moment is probably a left-back, Baines!

We need a playmaker, a player that can make a team tick, a player like Arteta (that is fit and able to play).

This player is even more important in a five man midfield. There is only so much a hard-working team can do and Everton have just about reached that limit. We need some class in the centre of the pitch controlling matters.

Come on, Bill, get that wallet out and get us that star player that will make us into a top 4 side.

We've apparently taken Ronald Raldes on trial for a week, if Sky Sports are to be believed, and he looks like a quality player to add to our squad for free. Have a look: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ab_U6itStgQ

So we've shown an interest in Victor Moses. I hope he'll be happy at Spurs/Villa/City.

I'm only 17 but I'm a diehard Blue through and through!! Although I know I'm only a kid, this is how I see things.

We can't rely on players' versatility — we need cover. A left-back in case (god forbid) anything happens to Baines; we are OK at centre-back and right-back... for now! And up front we have the quality to contend with any club.

But midfield in my opinion needs a bit of "tweaking". Pienaar, Osman, Cahill, Bilyaletdinov and Arteta are all attacking midfielders; we need an out-and-out left winger and a right winger (Bentley?) and we need centre-mid.

We have defensive mids: Neville, Rodwell, Fellaini... but I'm talking a real centre-mid. Moyes was looking at Ever Banega from Valencia who would be a dream come true addition to our blue army...

But I say....

BRING BACK MANNY FERNANDES!!!!
