The Tony Kay Scandal

Comments (4)

On BBC Radio 4, the afternoon play was a dramatised documentary about the The Tony Kay Scandal. It is still available on BBC iPlayer and should be of interest to all Evertonians and not just the ones who, like me, remember Kay as a great footballer and also the affair which ended his career. Kay is interviewed as part of the production.

It's 45mins long (!) and worth a listen.

Still such a sad, sad story.

On a critical note, they clearly took a lot of liberties with the character of Harry Catterick, who I couldn’t imagine being anywhere near so pally with a player.

But it’s the sour taste of the moral double standards I can’t get out of my mouth. And banning him for life... just astounding.

I wonder if it can be argued, though, that this scandal actually did have an effect in cleaning up English Football? ... or should I say British Football, since the real perpetrator was another bastard Scot.

Tony Kay could certainly play, that's for sure. I believe he would have been a World Cup winner in 66 too.

A very sad tale indeed.

I guess we had a more fuller thread on this topic back in January...

I was surprised by Dick Fearon’s very strong comments in that thread, and can’t help wondering if he would soften the high moral stance just a bit after listening to this, and especially to the words of Tony Kay himself — something that i think was lacking from the 1997 TV drama-doc, The Fix.
