The Mail Bag

Unto the breech once more...

Everton team news vs West Ham:

Howard, Hibbert, Yobo, Distin, Baines, Heitinga, Gosling, Fellaini, Rodwell, Cahill, Saha.

Subs: Nash, Neill, Coleman, Wallace, Yakubu, Agard, Baxter.

An interesting line-up today. I'm extremely glad to have Saha back for today's game and it's interesting to see Gosling in the side again today. Hopefully he produces what he did first half the other day. Neill not being chosen is another interesting one but I thought Hibbert played reasonably well the other day especially some of his challenges. I think it has been a kick up his backside to be honest.

West Ham don't look that great on paper it has to be said and here's to a solid Everton victory... actually who am I kidding?! ANY victory today will do.

COYBB! Any match threads?

Interesting that Jo is not even on the Bench. Does anyone know of any injuries etc etc. I would have been tempted to play Neill instead of Gosling today though, any thoughts?

Why would you play Neill ahead of Gosling? He’s a right back/centre half??That would mean us starting with 6 defenders on the pitch + Rodwell. At least Dan can get up and down the wing..Neill out there would be a disaster.A scappy 1 nil would be ideal today. We badly need 3 points today or were staring at the bottom 3 for the next 2 weeks!

Any links that are found will be greatly appreciated.

I think Gosling will give a lot of effort out there today and hopefully this will mean that Cahill isn’t right-mid.

Super Danny Gosling getting a game in midfield rather than Neill is a positive move from Moyes coz we need the points bigtime. Neill would have arguably menat 7 defenders on the pitch if we view Rodwell and Heitinga as defenders first.
Neill at RB offers more than Hibbo in an attacking sense though so its not as attacking as it could have been obviously, especially with Yak benched too.
Like Matt, don’t care how we play today, it is ALL about the result...COYB!

Just hope this 4-1-4-1 formation becomes 4-4-2 when we’re on the front foot allowing Fellaini/Cahill the chance to get up alongside Saha,if we stick to that miserable 4-5-1 thats let us down so badly lately then Moyes really has shown an inability to make positive changes,Cahill in midfield is like playing with 10 men, sorry to sound so negative before the games started, anyway fingers crossed Saha wont be left to battle alone for that pathetic long ball!

Dan does get up the wing, but produces nothing. Not good enough.... YET. Games against Bolton and Benfica are two examples when the easy ball on both occasions to Cahill would have led to goals spring to mind. Neill has played in MF for West Ham, allowing Cahill to play up from alongside Saha. More balanced and more of a threat.

I will put my hands up and admit that I was one of the people who thought Moyes should have considered the offer for Luis Saha.

I’ve always thought Luis was a decent player but at the time I thought it was good money for an older injury jinxed player.

I’m happy to admit I was wrong. King Luis is proving himself at Everton this season and we’d be stuffed without his goals.

Thankfully Moyes knew what he was doing when he turned down the offer and kept King Luis.

Smash and Grab so far. We have played poorly, giving the ball away far too easily.

There is no balance in midfield, but that is understandable considering Cahill is out wide and Gosling is on the right. Goslings final ball is poor, and I’d much rather have Osman on the right but of course he’s injured.

The defense is doing well, and West Ham haven’t really threatened but I’d be much more comfortable with a second goal.

West Ham look vulnerable and if Lois lasts long enough hopefully he will get a 2nd.

I would like to say give Wallace or Baxter a chance in midfield, but victroy is too important to risk.

I expect Yakubu to come on for Saha on about 70 mins. Maybe Rodwell could be taken off too as he’s been booked and could do with a rest.

Satisfying if not exciting 1st half.

Andrew Edwards - Gosling was out of it second half completely and so therefore because he is playing today I’m hoping he gives the same commitment and tireless running he did in the first half against Benfica.

Nowhere did I say the lad was class first half I simply said I hope he produces what he did first half the other day - I don’t think he’s as gifted a player as Rodwell et al, but I think what he does offer is a never say die attitude and commitment something that was on show during the first half again today in my opinion.

Besides get behind the 19 year old!

Again Parker proves to all he is no mercenary .. we missed out on a great player imo.. but besides him they are worse than us... Saha is gifted... what a strike....

Rodwell and Heitinga winning a lot of ball... Heitinga could be out DFM and stick in the center with Arteta I would be happy... his passing range is better than Rodwell for now.. especially his long range.
Fellaini causing all sorts of issues for them.. but still giving away too many fouls and is a bit gobby today...

Gosling always losing it in when a player is on him.. he needs to learn how to keep it away from the opposition... Saha should teach him how as the master of this.

Rishy onto our nemesis... the 2nd half.

Just to put a little perspecitve on things we’ve lost once in the last seven league games. If we’d picked up the points we deserved v Wolves, Stoke and Bolton we’d have 20 points - in 6th with a game in hand and two points ahead of the red shite.

We’ve been pretty poor all season so it shows AGAIN what could’ve been.

As was undoubtedly said before the game the result was all that mattered today. I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed watching us win so little, not meant as a criticism of the performance, just in terms of the nerves, the desperate need for the points and so on. Bloody delighted though.

Horrific performance, shockingly bad. I’m sick of watching complete dross every week. 5 at the back against West Ham, barely hanging on & 8 defenders on the pitch at the end. FFS no sign of Arteta or Jags returning either so we’re stuck watching this crap for the foreseeable future. My faith is being severely tested I’m afraid.

Hibbo....you’ve destroyed my fucking nervous system and shortened my life....Oi Moyes...desperate alamo defending with no support for lone Yak....no!!! Thank fuck the Hammers could not hot a barn door and that we got lucky with that very tight and dubious offside for their late late equaliser that wasn’t! :-)
Hopefully Jekyll and Hyde switches round after the break and we can not be so embarassing to watch...thank fuck for the 3 points today....onwards and upwards hey!!!?! COYB!!

James - it’s not a stupid statement to say we could and should be in 6th despite being off form and injury ravaged pretty much all season. It shows how close the margins and how the little bad decisions made and bits of luck can turn a season on its head.

I said of after the Villa game and I will say it again, we have found Hetinga’s best position and thats the chief water carrier in front of defence. Good result, ground out to the end. Hibbert outstanding, Cahill playing a captains innings, Saha simply class, Fallani lucky not to get sent off but vital, Baines world class. Gosling scoring, generally when it goes right, we win. Well played all. Do that against United and we will have turned that corner.

Conidering the praise Aston Villa and Spurs have recieved not only in mainstream media but also this website, the fact that we are just 6 and 7 points of these teams with a game in hand, considering we have been so poor (which we have, we were lucky to win today) I actually feel a bit optimisic.

I know we have a bad run of games up until february, but with the return of a few players, primerily Pienaar and if Saha stays fit we are not out of teh race for 5th and 6th place.

Our best four players are Jags, Arteta, Pienaar and Saha - they haven’t played in the same side together since January. Any other top six club would’ve struggled in the same circumstances.

I’m really disappointed with the quality on display but now is the time to stick together, get into the top half and into the Euro knockout stages then kick on.

Come on you blues...
