You are David Moyes

Okay... after a trying weekend without an Everton game to focus on and dissect, let's terminate all this PC/Rodwell crap and focus on what's going down in just over 24 hours from now.

You are David Moyes: please name your 11 starting players and 7 subs to play against Sporting Lisbon... with explanation / justification as you see fit.

Slightly off the subject because of the ludicrous kick off time I won’t be able to make the game (I’m waiting for the first 7.30am kick off for the Asian audience) does anyone know is it being televised?

Its about time we had this old favourite back.

Heitinga (!!!) and Fellaini will be unavailable. I’m assuming that Senderos is, so -

Howard
Neville Senderos Distin Baines
Donovan Osman Arteta Pienaar
Cahill Saha

Subs: Bily Rodwell Coleman Gosling Yak Anichebe Nash

David, The game is on ESPN

Keith I think Senderos can play as he has played no games for Arsenal in Europe this season. Heitinga is definately available now (unless he has an injury I do not know about). He could not play in the early rounds but is now eligible.

My team would be

Howard
Neville Heitinga Distin Baines
Donovan Felli (Bily) Arteta Pienaar
Cahill
Saha

Subs: Osman, Bily (if Felli fit) Rodwell, Coleman, Yak, Vic and Nash

I would play Bily in central mid with Arteta if Felli is out as that is where he plays for his country and where he played for his former club. So well in fact that DM saw fit to splash out £11 million. I think he would thrive with Arteta’s influence and give him back his confidence as it is his prefered position a la Felli since he has moved to his proper position! It might also mean we continue to pass the ball through midfield which I am desperate for us to do against Sporting.

CD Senderos - He is better than Yobo
CD Distin - He is also better than Yobo
LB Baines - -why not??
RM Donovan
CM Cap. Pip - in for Arteta, keep him for Man U
CM Osman - Lightweight, but does a lot of work in CM
LM Bily - has European pedigree

Heitinga is 100% NOT available for us as he has played in this competition for Atletico and they are now in the competition having dropped down from the CL.

I would suspect given no injuries from the Chelsea game, the only changes will be Yobo for Heitinga and Pienaar for Bily.

Who’s PC Rodwell? Is he the new fans liaison officer for Merseyside Police?

Heitinga definitely can’t play, so:

GK: Howard
RB: P. Neville (sorely tempted to give Coleman a go, but he could be an attacking option as a sub)
LB: Baines
CB: Senderos
CB: Distin (agree that both of these are better than Yobo, is he even fit?)
DM: Rodwell (If he’s fit enough, this is the kind of game I see Rodwell doing well in, I also see him as a natural understudy to Fellaini)
CM: Arteta (In a choice between him and Osman, Osman can come on if Arteta fades)
RM: Donovan
LM: Pienaar
AM: Cahill (Only just, very close to playing Pienaar here and Bily wide)
CF: Saha

Nash
Coleman
Yobo
Osman
Bilyaletdinov
Yakubu
Vaughan

Pretty sure Moyes will start with Osman though, presumably for Rodwell. The rest is pretty predictable anyway.

Agree with Keith G - the team almost picks itself on recent performances:

Howard
Neville Senderos Distin Baines
Donovan Osman Arteta Pienaar
Cahill Saha

Subs - Bily, Rodwell, Coleman, Vaughan, Yak, Anichebe, Nash

I’d have Vaughan in for Gosling as a sub though, for when the "tired legs" come in to play with Saha. Must say, damn shame about Heitinga - I like that guy, and his attitude.

Because its a home game, I think he should play a 4-4-1-1, more attacking football and Moyes doesn't do much of that when we're at home so maybe a change would be good.

My team would be:

Howard
Coleman Senderos Distin Baines
Donovan Bily Arteta Pienaar
Cahill
Saha

I don't think that will be the team because I can't see Dave’s favourite players coming off in Neville and Osman even though Neville cost us 2 goals and Osman just turns up when he feels like. I would give Bily a run in the team as that is his natural position in the middle and he plays the ball on the floor like the rest of the team expect Mr Phil (The Punt) Neville and that's why I would rather play Coleman as well... gives us more attacking quality, even if he is young; why not give him a go?

I don’t want to ’win’ this edition of YADM, because I too want to see Seamus Coleman promoted from the bench (where at least he can be guaranteed). He played a good game against BATE, as did Duffy, but DM will not start him tomorrow. Neville, Capn Pip, will be RB.

I would also want Donovan to start, and it will be very interesting to see what he does against a quite different opposition.

I am a Diniyar Bilyaletdinov fan, and there is a very good argument for putting a European player out there, but Osman does well in Euro games, and I’m sure Moyes will go with him.

And I suspect that if Senderos is fit, Yobo will be on the bench — which could be very crowded. No matter what happens, there’s no doubt that we have a strong squad now.

Thom — no way anyone will be kept for the next game. No points expected from the Man U game, but Euro progress possible from this one. Or at least I think that’s how Moyes will see it.

Besides, we can take Man U now with one of two or three line-ups.

We have to be aware they are a GOOD counterattcking side despite their recent league form and there fore we need a strong MF. Taking account of reported injuries etc I would go with:-

GK Howard - no real choice
RB Coleman - he is a pacey player and PN has not been playing well.
CD Yobo - He is better than Senderos
CD2 Distin - Not much choice and due a good game
LB Baines - who else??
RM Donovan - picks himself for 75 mins and then Anichebe to clinch the 3rd.
LM Arteta - pace of the game should suit him for 70 minutes then Neville to see the game out.
CM Rodwell - if fit got the height and a great engine and offers variety going forward.
CM Osman - Lightweight, but does a lot of work and can score goals
LM Pienaar -Great engine and not likely to be kicked into the stands in this one
CF King Louis - for 75 mins then the YAK
... and just behind Tiger Tim who has really come back to form now his buddy Mikky has returned.

Other subs Nash, Senderos (if fit) Duffy otherwise, Billy, Gosling and Baxter.

Howard Neville Yobo or Senderos Distin Baines

4-1-4-1; No messing about. Rodwell protects, Arteta orchestrates, with Pienaar and Bainsey running amok down the left. I still want Arteta/Cahill/Pienaar and Baines to link into those tidy triangles at speed. Same noise as against Chelsea and hit ’em hard from the start.

Arteta.........Rodwell
Donovan..........Bily...............Pienaar
....................Saha

But I think Moyes' team will include Osman and Neville in place of Rodwell and Coleman.

No idea what way it’ll go... hopefully we’ll play football in a little warm-up for the weekend — because I really think we’ve a good chance of playing some football on Saturday and beating the Mancs.

The only thing I would add about Ciarán’s team is perhaps that Pienaar, Billy and Donovan interchange position — nice fluid midfield would give them all kinds of problems. Arteta and Rodwell can pick up the pieces if moves break down. All are comfortable on the ball, which is important in this kind of game.

Think Andy has it spot-on there. Measured attack ought to be the way to go. It’s gonna be of vital importance to keep a clean sheet, which given our defensive record this season, isn’t going to be easy. 0-0 wouldn’t be a disaster, so I reckon we’ll see a safety first approach. (It seems Moyes considers going 4-4-2 as gung-ho!)

So 4-5-1 again... but with an early goal, the Goodison roar, we may just twat them. Consider the fact that the Portuguese league is inferior to ours in terms of quality, we could do some damage... We just beat Chelsea, Sporting drew 0-0 against Pacos Ferreira on Friday... so theoretically, they should find playing us a step up; we’re playing at a higher standard, against teams of better quality..

Therefore, as long as we don’t fear them, we can take them. We’re in form, and are a completely different animal to the one that faced Benfica..

Dont think anyone should underestimate Sporting - they may not be performing well domestically, but they do have European pedigree. I’d settle for any kind of win, as long as we dont concede. 2-0 would be great.

As for the XI, I’d go with this 4-4-1-1:
GK Howard
RB Coleman - deserves a start
CB Distin - Has slotted in well this season
CB Yobo - More experienced than Senderos
LB Baines - no explanation needed

RM Donovan - has shown great potential to slot right into the team
CM Pienaar - class player, especially in a central role
MC Arteta - bit of culture in centre
LM Bily - russian roulette on the wing
AMC Cahill - always has the ability to do the business
FC King Louis - More goals your highness please

Subs:
Nash
Neville
Senderos
Osman
Rodwell
Vaughan - a great super sub option
The Yak

Of course, no doubt Moyes will have Pip at rb instead of Coleman — but I really think this lad deserves a chance from the start. I know the midfield is a little creative heavy, but I’d love to see us play better football. And as long as Peanuts can shake that awful habit of holding onto the ball to long, we could really play some attractive football with this team. COYB!
