Line-up is : Howard, Neville, Distin, Yobo, Baines, Arteta, Cahill, Osman, Donovan, Saha.
Subs: Nash, Bilyaletdinov, Vaughan, Gosling, Yakubu, Rodwell, Coleman.
Predictable really, I think Ciaran actually called it exactly right a few days ago. A shame no Rodwell or Coleman.

All that effort for nothing.
Game on
Going to be very ugly over there.
Distin’s touch looked dodgy all night and the penalty was very clumsy.
Trouble is although Everton won on the night you would have to say Sporting are favourites now because of the away goal.
This should have been us home and dry. Baines was excellent today and i thought after a few nerves to begin with we dictated the entire game. Even when they got the penalty that was a chance that had looked unlikely the entire game.
I can’t believe we’re in this position after tonight! Fucking Janner’s!
1. It wasn’t the first time Distin’s controld was lacking. A couple of times during the match his control and touch were lacking.
2. It was a heavy from Rodwell but I bet Heitinga would have been able to control it.
3. Distin produced a very lazy tackle for the penalty. He didn’t have to do that. He should have just stayed on his feet and let the Sporting player shoot at goal. The odds of the player scoring were probably about the same as the penalty but at least Distin would have stayed on the pitch.
I don’t like slagging off players but Rodwell’s poor pass and Distin’s bad control and silly tackle have cost Everton here.
Sporting only need a 1-0 result and Everton are out. And we wont be back in Europe next season.
It was a rookie’s mistake from a promising youngster and clumsy and lumbering defending from an experienced pro.
Thought that we got up to our usual tricks in the last 10 minutes or so and just said back too far and let them onto us. Were looking pretty comfortable before that, so no real ned
How exactly is it a done deal that this team will beat us in Lisbon? Because we played a poor game in Lisbon earlier this season with half a team? We went to Chelsea and held them 3-3, held Arsenal 2-2 in a game we should have won. So how exactly is it that we have no chance of at the very least holding this Lisbon side to a draw away from home? We’re not out of this tie, we’re fucking leading. Christ, the negativity of some of you is just too much to handle sometimes.
The central midfield triumvirate looked unbalanced from the start - and seemed to be lacking a defensive player - I don’t necessarilty mean someone to sit in front of the back four at all times - but somon to control the midfield area...Ossie tried but the most obvious thing from his game this evening was misplaced passes and running into danger and eventually condeding possession...
The other major problem (which could arguably have been a result of this lack of midfield leadership) was the amount of play that went through Neville - and he inevitably panicked and hoofed it..however kudos for his pass to Cahill for the goal (I have to assume he meant it)...but another poor display..
As for Distin...yes, it was terrible from Rodwell..but any centre half wort their salt would have cleared it...Unfortunately Distin is increasingly looking like a liability...
Good shows from Yobo..and the usual controlled display from Arteta...
United are currently looking pretty crap against a geriatric Milan team...A bit of a re-arrangement and we surey have the team to give them a game on Saturday...
Donnie Darko, our ref tonight just about got it right. The officials in the next leg could play a much bigger part.
Ciaran is right that we lacked strength in midfield - but he may not agree (!) that the obvious thing is to put Neville there. There is not enough defensive strength with Arteta and Osman, and Neville / Arteta were a very good partnership last year (Neville breaks up play, shields the defence, and passes it to Arteta). And then Coleman can cause them trouble on the flanks with Donovan. That might also have been a better formation tonight.
As it was usual DM tactics of sitting deep and inviting the opposition onto us. It gave them all the encouragement they needed and they eventually scored.
As for the goal, yes a poor ball by Rodwell but Distin, well I just despair of him. Thank god he was sent off - at least we wont have to put up with him for the second leg ! All he had to do was put his foot through the ball for gods sake but no, he tries to control the ball when he hadnt done that all night. Then all he had to do was bring the fella down 10 yards outside the area but no he decides to wait until he is in the area to do that - he is a bloody liability and I maintain he is one of the worst centre backs we have had inm recent times.
Still believe we will get through though - we made them look better than they are today and if we play well in Lisbon we will get through.
Yes shit ball by Rodwell but completely hopeless defending from Distin - he has been a mistake waiting to happen for months and it has finally happened albeit with an assist from Rodwell. Hopefully it wont prove costly and we will learn from tonight that our defenders are simply not good enough to enable us to ’dit’ on a lead.
Re Osman,I don’t agree with the predictably disparaging comments above. The more you watch him closely, the more you realise what an intelligent player he is,and the value he brings to the side..
Finally: A hint of Andy Gray on Steve Sherwood,in Distin’s goal tonight, anyone ? ( one for the children )
WE WON!
Did you watch the game? WE WON IT!!!
For the benifit of the guys who have posted above... we won the game 2-1 and they only scored that goal because of a mistake by one of our players.
by the way...
Ossie had a great game, i saw him make last ditch tackles take on 3 and 4 players, run past people, dummy world class players, look for slide rule passes to put players in and run constantly. I thought he was committed, skillfull and driven tonight. I think with a bit of building up that this guy would be a talisman for us. He obviously has the skill.
Anyway... WE WON THE GAME.
Cruising, then shot ourselves in the foot. Again.
I think we are still favourites.
------------------
Your right mate..I don’t agree in the slightest - If Neville panicks like he has been doing in right back...just imagine the rabbit in the headlights routine he’d do in such a crucial postion as central midfield..
There was nothing in that game that made me fear going to Lisbon for a second leg, whatever the score. The fact that we won makes it all the better. Ok, if we’d have won by the 3 or 4 we should have done, then it would have been easier, but that in itself is an indication of the opposition.
As for blaming Distin - well get off his case, if someone sends you a knee high pass at 300 mph, you can’t just hoof, you have to try and control it first, yes he didn’t do it very well, but it's Rodwell's fault not Distin’s. Distin was only to blame for the penalty, as mentioned, if he was going to bring him down, it would have been better out of the box.
As for some of the other comments, do you think Davey was happy that his team set back, he complained about it in the post-match interviews, but yet you still blame his negative tactics!
Also, there were complaints of a midfield with ’too much style and not enough steel’ — again for those of you who criticise negativity — this was hardly it.
Nobody has mentioned the major key to the dodgy finish, but then they wouldn’t as it doesn’t fit with the argument. Cahill going off and being replaced by Yakubu meant a switch to a genuine 4-4-2 which meant we lost balance and midfield control.
We should still progress, really angry it isn't cut and dried, it should be.
They never looked like scoring at all until he took Arteta off who was controlling the midfield and keeping possession we were comfortable and Osman and Neville did nothing wrong.
My gripes are we were trying to play like a European team with slow build ups instead of a fast tempo game like we have been doing.
I thought they were rubbish and can see us scoring over at there place, but I will say again Moyes is as just to blame as Distin an Rodwell with his Arteta substitution.
Could have easily been 4-1 last night without flattering us.
I don’t think people are particularly disappointed - just providing a natural critique of the performance....A win is a win - however the away goal puts a slighly different slant on the result.
Different strokes for different folks..everyone sees the same game - they just interpret it differently...
For instance Mr Gladwell thinks everyone in the ground sees it different from those watching on the box....He thought Neville and Osman did nothing wrong - and appears to think that any contrary opinion is simply down to watching it via a different media...
Needless to say, I think that’s a bit silly.
Be critical by all means, but when your team over the past four months has been one of the form sides in the country then how about a bit of support instead of witch hunts, which I think is a bit silly.
I analysed what I saw. If you feel the need to heap effusive praise, irrespective of the performance - then feel free to do so.

Was everything he did perfect ? No. Does Lampard has a 100% passing accuracy/ tackling success count every game? No. Nobody does, and not every "play," is flawless. Remove myopia for a second, dispense with quibbling negativity, and view the big picture: He did a lot of good work.
Armchair supporters - don’t you just love em’ !!
