Baines going to South Africa?

Comments (23)

It looks like Wayne Bridge is pulling out of the England squad for the World Cup.

Does this mean Leighton Baines has a real shot of not only going to South Africa but gaining a starting place (depending on Cashley Cole's fitness)?

Not sure if it would be a good thing for the club; don't want him eyeing a move to a 'bigger' club, but good luck to the lad, what a dream it would be for him to play at a World Cup FInals.

Think Bainsey would have deserved a place whether Bridge was involved or not - better full-back simple as. Don’t rate Warnock that highly and with Cole injured as well it makes sense to me.

It would actually give me more of a reason to support England this summer, knowing a few of our boys are involved.

There are only 3 candidates, Warnock, Lescott and Baines.
Capello may take one left back with Lescott as cover for left back and centre half allowing him an additional player in the squad in midfield or upfront.
Its not a foregone conclusion Baines will get the nod but he is better than Warnock.
I doubt Cole will be fit and Capello will not take any half fit players he has already said that.
It is every players ambition to play for his country in the World Cup and ambitious players will want to join Everton if they see it is a platform for them to get onto the International stage.

Don't forget that fleb Knochesky, had one or two caps now plays for Fulham I think and used to be at Charlton.

Hold on a second what about Colemnan he’s the best wing back around... oh shame, he is Irish!

Bainsey would improve even more in the Ingerland squad, but it won’t mean too much to me, other than the international experience for him. I believe that we are fairly safe that the only thing that won’t change would be his personality. In other words I can’t imagine him changing into another Ingerlander arsehole a la Terry, Cole, Lampard, Barry or Bambi! Imagine that scenario?

On a side note, I see that Louis Saha has been selected for the French squad - many congrats to "King Louis XVII".

I agree James. I’ve never gone along with the view that Everton players playing for England are more likely to move clubs. Everton players playing for a shit/mediocre Everton side however are more likely to move a la Rooney and Barmby.

It can only be positive if a young star thinks he can get a game for Everton and be developed by Moyes and go on to play for England.

Baines’ form is a product of playing in a far more technical side and developing a great partnership with Pienaar

I agree with Adam, LB deserves to be there ahead of bridge.

I wouldnt agree that Baines is better than Bridge - based on what little I’ve seen of Bridge he looks very good defensively and offensively.
However, Baines is certainly the next best and should go to the world cup.

On saying that I’m not in the least arsed about England and have only ever cared about one team, Everton*. I’d rather selfishly prefer that all our players have a nice restful summer and we settle in to our rythm early nest season for a full tilt assault on the title.
*My second team has always been who ever happens to be playing the shite on the day.

If he plays for England then good for him, but please remember he has always been an Everton fan.

With Louis Saha now in the French squad it is further recognition of our achievements lately. The King I am told went to a French clinic during the International break for rest and recuperation, a bit of treatment and be pampered, as he has alot of problems mentally rather than physically with his injuries, at Utd if he had a runny nose he would pull out of the game, Baz has done alot of work on him to get that out of his system. I hope this doesnt knacker him not getting the break.
I will be made up if Baines gets the nod, there is nothing prouder for an Everton English lad to get the callup. It will develop his game playing with and against better players and being part of the Capello setup
A hat trick at Wembley, a century at Lords, a try at Twickenham, and dare I say it winning Wimbledon what every English lad dreams off.

First off, as much as I like Leighton Baines and wish the lad all the best, Im sorry Keith Slinger but he was a boyhood red.

Secondly, I fucking hate the current England squad, messrs Terry, Cole, Lampard and King of the Cunts Gerrard. I can not bring myself to cheer a team that contains that tiny foreheaded twat.

Finally, I would rather Everton won the Zenith Data Systems Cup than England won the World Cup.

I think that he’s been our player of the season. Cashely will be losing some of his cash to the lovely Cheryl by that time or so the papers say so he meight be left out of the squad. Personally I couldn’t care as I’d prefer him to play well for Everton i don’t want him to fo to the world cup.

Francis, I’d prefer Everton to have a better goal difference or win programme of the year.

I have to say I agree with Mark. Overall, Bridge just edges Baines as he’s better defensively. Baines has looked iffy when asked to defend on occasion this season. However, Leighton is a much better crosser of the ball than Bridge and can hit a decent free kick.
As for the other potentials, only Warnock I think comes close to getting in, and he’s a converted CB from his Liverpool days. Lescott (and this is not sour grapes in any way) has looked a shadow of his former Everton self at Citeh, and I’ll be very surprised if Capello is even considering him for SA.
Anyway, Bridge is definitely not going to the World Cup now, so unless something really bad happens, I can see Baines on the plane to South Africa. (Cue injury...)

Feel sorry for Bridge, but if a slot opens for LB,great First Terry, now the Ashley Cole circus--give me strength..

Baines is a good egg,and he’s worked his socks off for this opportunity.

In the light of his recent comments, I wonder how much the England manager actually rates Baines.

Incidentally, does anyone think we should have resigned from the Premiership because our ex player Wayne Rooney has been playing away with the Manure?

Could not care any less about England.
There is no way on earth I would support any team
containing Gerrard, Terry, Ferdinand et al.

Capello also annoys the hell out of me. He talks hard but when it comes down to it his words are hollow. His latest lecture on how players who do not conduct themselves well off the field, will not make the squad is complete rubbish. He will still pick Terry Ferdinand Cole etc given any chance he gets. I hope England go out as soon as possible.

Nick,I would suggest that Sven’s side at the last world cup were the most despised side ever.Up until about 10 years ago ,after the two Irelands I would have cheered on England. Now,I want them to get stuffed and I think it is because of the horrible ,disgusting little clique of cheats and scumbags who disgrace the shirt.
