Summer Sales?

Comments (17)

June is usually the time when there is a wholesale clear-out of young talent from the Everton Academy and Reserves squads. But I don't recall seeing anything recently about young players being released.

Checking the player lists provided on the Official Website and comparing them with the records we have compiled of appearances for the Reserves and Academy sides would seem to confirm that very few have left. The following Reserves players who featured at some point during the last season appear to be no longer with us:

  • George Krenn (was released last August)
  • Lars Stubhaug (returned to Norway)
  • Karl Sheppard (joined Galway Utd in February)
According to Wikipedia, Everton paid €280k to Shelbourne for Sheppard 3 years ago.

Hallam Hope and Ross Barkley are not listed but I think they are still classed as Schoolboys. The rest of the regulars, including last summer's new arrivals, Luke Garbutt. Femi Orenuga, Cory Arnoux, Anton Peterlin, and Shkodran Mustafi are still at the club... although I'm sure a number of them were only given 1-year contracts, so I guess we'll see what happens in the next few weeks.

Has anybody seen anything hidden away in the darker corners of the Echo or any other local sources?

I just checked the Galway United website, Karl Sheppard is officially on loan until his contract runs out in the summer but you would assume that he will be released. He has done very well for the club and was their Player of the Month for April.

On a side note, the club's CEO is one Mr Nick Gleeson, formally of Barings Bank before blowing every last penny the bank had.

Well fuck me Kieran you're right (although it's Leeson). How did I not hear that? Anyway, that's another few quid wasted on a youngster then.

Michael - I've been trying to keep note of contracts where possible as the club don't seem to keep them listed anywhere on the OS (helpfully)!

Of those you mention, the last I heard was as follows:

Garbutt - 2010
Orenuga - unknown
Arnoux - unknown
Peterlin - unknown
Mustafi - 2012
Barkley - unknown
Hope - unknown

Sorry, not much help I know — I think the conclusion we can reach from this is that the club isn't very good at keeping us informed about such things! (Amongst others...)

I also try to keep an eye on the academy but it really is difficult to do so. One reason for the lack of information may be that the club is wary of other clubs poaching their young stars.

I did some digging and while I didn't find the information on the above players, I did find this interesting video with a young player from Everton Florida who is hoping to rise through our academy and play for Everton in the 'EPL'

Good to see that we are casting the net wide in the search for talent. I'd love to see more quality players roll off the conveyor belt into the team since for me this is what football is all about, not just spending some billionaire's cash on someone else's talent. A healthy mix of homegrown and bought in makes me very happy...now if only we could achieve some form of success with them...

I'm sure that Peterlin and Arnoux were both signed on 12-month contracts and I am pretty confident that they will have headed back to the 3rd / 4th tier of minor league US football.

As contracts seem to start on July 1st, I would presume contracts end then and the released list should be issued this week.

I would expect Carlo Nash would go as is out of contract alongwith Peterlin and Arnoux who I gather were not even good enough for the Reserves never mind the local pub team. I cannot see any other senior players being released as none of them are out of contract.

I would imagine half a dozen youngsters who we have hardly heard of would be released. I have also heard Barkley is very highly rated is he not a star of England Under-16/17

With the plethora of young strikers joining I would think Jutkeiwicz would be sold on and with Mucha joining either or both Ruddy or Turner would move on.

I can see Landon Donovan joining us and a new centre back, but unless Yakubu is sold I can't see a Moutinho or other high priced purchase coming in as I would imagine the budget be used to secure Arteta and Pienaar. If however they leave then I would expect a big buy of a top midfielder

After in my opinion the worst World Cup ever, mainly due I think to the lightweight ball, the vuvuzelas & the England team, there is hardly anyone I would bust a gut to go out and buy within the budget of the club apart from Donovan. My only other thought is Honda worth a punt as imagine the spinoff we would get from Japan with him in the squad.

I'm a Galway United season ticket holder and have seen Sheppard play regularly — he has been oustanding for GUFC. I have never seen a player as good with the team in 10 years — he is a certainty to leave in the transfer window.

I think he will definitely be going back to England as there is no money even in the top clubs here to pay for him... if you believe all the rumours that started flying round after he played about 3 games!!!

James, that's a good shout about Honda - he impressed me too. Does he play in Russia at the moment?

As Chris Waddle mentioned on 5 Live, he's quick, efficient, and gets you where you want to be.

Honda plays for CSKA Moscow. They are normally in the champions league (1/4 finals last year). We didn't qualify for UEFA this year. I doubt he would want to come. Even if he did it would be megabucks.

Yes he plays for CSKA isnt that were Jo come from. I think Honda cars are overpriced the Mrs wanted a Jazz but the Mazda was better value.
They have just opened an excellent Japanese in Exchange Flags called the Sakura, very pricey but Honda wont go hungry if he come and better than eating Chicken Kiev and beetroot every day. I am sure Honda Liverpool would give him a motor.

Graham (#3), thanks for the notes. It is indeed hard to figure out if the club don't mention the contract length on signing... a case in point being today's announcement of the Mucha signing, and no indication of contract length.

James (#6), although you're no doubt right about the contract end date, the habit has been in past years to release players en masse anywhere in mid-May to mid-June. The number of young players being brought in this time is very unusual; I don't know if it means Moyes wants to hold on to more players and finally work with a bigger squad, or if he is preparing for a mass clearout, perhaps after the Oz tour.

Talking of which, aren't they flying out today? Perhaps the squad list may contain some clues...

Interestingly, Garbutt is listed in the Academy section on the website — not the Reserves, despite holding a squad number.

Did he make the bench for the BATE game last year? Maybe Moyes only gives squad numbers to players involved in a game. Would be a surprise though if he's not been involved in Reserve games.

All the other names are still listed — though wouldn't surprise me if they've just been slack updating it, and half of them disappear over the coming weeks without any news items posted!

Luke Garbutt played in around half of the Reserves games last season (Reserves Appearances) but that's not what got him the squad number... it was BATE (Good Memory!). He was on the bench; every player involved had to have a squad number, which is how we got up to 45 in total last season; could be even higher this season!

Somebody said they have not updated the players lists on the OS with the new incoming; well, they have now, and I can't see that they have deleted anyone yet.

In 2009, four players were released on 12/06/09 - check the transfers section of the OS. In 2008, the release date was 01/07/08. I would expect news tomorrow, or certainly sometime soon. As for some of the above (Garbutt, Orenuga, etc.), if their contact is pro, then we don't have to worry about them leaving in the same way as over 23s (compensation payable). In short, only those not good enough will be released. Also see Silva and Gueye as replacements for Jutkiietwicz and Vaughan - if we sell Ruddy as well (hopefully with a buy back clause, we may have enough for that right winger we need.
