£30M bidding war for new England star

I genuinely hope that Jack doesn't get sold as I could then see no hope. I don't see how we can keep our players though while we are so short of money.

Sorry, just to add that I was very proud of Jack Rodwell and Phil Jagielka for their exceptional performances Saturday for England, they were great ambassadors for the club.

Why don't we just sell everyone then Peter. In fact why don't we just do away with our academy as well.

Er - why don't we just sell the whole club, the history , the naming rights etc to Man. City and change our name to Man City Reserves- that is they way it is heading.

Possibly what Peter means is that £30m is way more than we might expect for Rodwell and double the £15m being spoken about earlier in the season.

Just guessing...

I agree, regardless of the why's and wherefores of how we got to the situation we find ourselves in, the fact is that the banks must be paid. Selling good potential for large sums of cash is the only way that's going to happen.

By all means lets get Kenwright out, march and protest at length, join the BU, refuse to buy a shirt ? whatever your methid may be but for now, players like Rodwell must go to ensure survival of the club.

He makes one England appearance and all of a sudden he's brilliant again.
Jacks been very average during his Everton career and if money bag teams want to offer that type of money we would be mad not to accept.
I'd take 20 million in a heartbeat let alone 30.
We are in no position to turn down that kind of money, even if the banks swallow half of it, at least it means we are getting nearer financial stability for the long term which in my opinion should be our main objective. We need to lay the foundations of a solid club again. If it means cashing in and saving up for a few years then so be it!

We should be keeping our young developing players and selling the likes of Heitinga and Billyaletdinov who don't give two monkeys about Everton.

There is plenty of other dead wood at Everton earning 50 grand a week we should be sellling first.

Not some young kid trying to make his name in the game.

Is it just me that thinks people are getting a little carried away with his performance on saturday? He played for half an hour passed it ok, and made one good run forward, to me its the people around the England set-up clinging onto any old hope that the futures bright when in my opinion it isn't.

For me there is a load of average over hyped players coming through like Rodwell Jones etc and as per ususal because the English there price is ridiculous. I have always wanted him to do well for us of course coming through the ranks etc, but for me i don't think he will be anything more than just an ok midfielder that will have some good games were he looks great, and there will be other games, the majority were he looks crap and gets you thinking "whats this hype all about".

I think Moyes maybe has a lot to do with him being out of form especially last season as this season he has been a bit better, he should be allowed to surge forward as that is a strength of his, and also given the confidence to be the playmaker instead of the "play it safe Jack" you hear from Moyes on the touchline.

30million in January for him, yes pleae, but Moyes to spend it, if he got any of it that is, umm no thanks. COYB

Ryan,

I agree we should be moving the likes of Jonny & Bily on, based on the fact they don't fit in and nothing to do with whether or not they are patriotic blues. Clearly Billy's had a psychological freak out in England and needs a new start. Jonny is good enough in my opinion at center half but pin-ball machine Distin is clearly more physically suited to the Premier league because of his height & pace and thus gets the nod in that position.

In the case of Rodwell, He MIGHT go on to become a great player if we sell him and we would all be saying what if !? But an easy way for me to asses the value of a player and if he is worth selling is to simply ask myself the question, "If we had £30million to spend now, should we buy Rodwell?" I'll leave that with you.

For fecks sake, he gets a call up and some slackjaw journo picks a number out of his empty skull and writes a shite pice of fiction....and Moyes still gets a bashing No 8!!! (his supposed lack of form has made him get a full England call up....!!!!)

Is this the same twat who wrote that ManUre will be buying him for £20m last year or the same dope who said Barkley will go for x amount too.

Complete non story - the usual made-up rubbish to fill column inches. No sources quoted. See how they say Chelsea are "monitoring the situation" - this means absolutely nothing. You might as well just make the assumption that top clubs are keeping an eye on all highly rated up and coming players. I seem to recall though when Villas Boas was asked about Rodwell he denied that he was even watching him.

Those of you who come on here to slag off Jack Rodwell and want him sold haven't a clue. You could tell from the first time JR pulled on a Blue shirt he was a little bit special. Only when he has gone to play for a manager who knows how to harness his skills and play him correctly will you realise how foolish you were to want him gone. The kid has class stamped all over him. Then again, there's always Osman to play in the midddle if Jack does go... Yaaaawwnnnn.

15   Posted 15/11/2011 at 15:22:21

I really disagree about Rodwell and especially with the above poster who put Jones down too. Rodwell has played very well this year and is still improving, he isn't the finished article but he is very good and I believe will make it right to the top. The figure of £30M is rubbish though but £15M is realistic.

Jones is one of the best English players to come through in the last decade, he's a lovely footballer and at ease at full back, central defence and even midfield.

As Jonathan says above, why not just sell everybody?

I do agree with Ryan @ 7, however, if we sold all our back up players like Billy, we'll have noone left to play for us. As sad as it is, we need to sell one player and buy two to thicken out the squad. I don't want it to happen but I can see it happening and I can also see why. It's shit.

Cant believe Rodwell actually got in the England team on his current form but we can see tonight how well the lad can play he has been severley restricted by Moyes so hopefully Capello will allow him to play more freely.

I would defo sell him tomorrow for £30m IF the cash went to new players instead of BK's pocket or the bank if not lets keep him our new manager could work wonders with him.

As for Man City reserves rather that than Man Utd reserves / veterans!

It's a load of nonsense, but if someone was silly enough to offer £30m i would bite their hands off. We could buy 2 or 3 top class players who are the finished product and in areas were were are short. We have enough central midfielders, we need wingers and strikers.

Rodwell for £30 mill?? Take it all day... the lad's nowhere near as good as Wayne Rooney and we only got £20M for him. You watch tonight the price will go down when he shows how far off world class he is in a proper appearance.

When someone's top-draw, there's no room for argument, you can just see it, à la Baines, Rooney, dare I say Gerrard, Michael Owen ? they just do the bizz and that's it, no ifs or buts. Can that be said for Jack? I don't think so!

Why do 'TRUE'(?) supporters feel the need to put down every young lad who makes the breakthrough.

Jack Rodwell is an exceptional talent.

He has enormous potential.

Everybody in football knows it.

He has just got over a serious injury and is only 20 years of age.

ALL supporters should be encouraging him to build on his experience to date and see him get some more consistency before we start believing bored journos with nothing else to write about and then start putting one of our own down.

We can turn down £3M for Neville, £8M for Saha and £7M for Yakubu (from West Ham), lose Gosling for nothing, and give Pienaar away... yet, when Rodwell, Fellaini or Barkley are flogged on, the old "We're skint, the bank are screwing us" mantra will fall from the King of all Bullshitters' mouth.

He is not this he is not that, FFS he is 20, he is the future that we can pin our hopes and dreams on. I am sure the regulars on here will be sick of me banging on about him and Fella being the future power force of Premier league football.

The Engerlund stuff does do me in, but also I feel proud tonight that we had 2 outfield starters, and Jags I thought was superb against Spain. I have commented before that maybe we should cash in on Jags, I am wrong. The earlier poster who commented about Bily and our not so hard man, earning £51k pw and £65k pw to keep the bench warm should be outed and while I am ranting can I also agree with the earlier poster re Sicknote who will also be on a few quid.

Got to go, TBH I hope Jack is off along with LB as it will indicate that what has been seen is enough. Lastly, if I may, I wonder why Jack has played right mid and done so well?

Cheers

I would take 30 or 35 Million for Rodwell IF it was cash up front, no never-never deals a la Rooney and IF it meant we could keep Ross Barkley. We need cash for new players and anyone who says we MUST keep Rodwell ask yourself if you could see us paying 30M for a player just like him. I think we would expect a lot more for our money than a "prospect" which is what he is, cap or no cap. While we're at it I would unload Bilyaletdinov and think hard about selling Fellaini too. We need a war chest to spend on players who can get the job done.

Even if we got £30m for Rodwell it wouldn't get reinvested in our team,it would go to paying off debts Kenshite has run up in his desperate attempts to keep control.

The self-styled 'world's greatest Evertonain' will be delighted with these reports.

Rodwell is a class act playing in a shite team under a negative manager and will never reach his true potential at EFC. We will lose him and Barkley and i can see the big fella going probably to Spain or Italy. As far as the other dead wood they are mostly defensive players, Coleman is a full back not a winger/midfielder why is he not learning that job instead of being a headless chicken. When we were crying out for numbers to get forward to support the forwards the cross comes in and there is nobody. It used to be the winger would get to the byline and then cross. We pump crossess in 35-45 yds out so we dont get behind the defence and then we get caught offside. The whole style of play is fucked, is shite and we put up with it FFS

Connor #11 "Jonny is good enough in my opinion at center half but pin-ball machine Distin is clearly more physically suited to the Premier league because of his height & pace and thus gets the nod in that position."

I guess you mean centre back? If so Distin gets the nod in that position because he has no competition, he's left footed and plays on the left side. Heitinga is competing with Jags for the right centre back position.

36   Posted 16/11/2011 at 01:52:58

Even if we sold Rodders, Moyes won't see half the money, and according to TWers he'll buy crap like Heitinga, Felliani and Bily, who apparantly are international class players in their own right but fucked up by the shit that's being drilled into them week in week out.

So no, don't sell Rodders as Moyes wouldn't know what to do with the money. He can keep his Everton pet Osman but not Rodders? Because he has a value on this head? Just proves Osman is fucking shite and will never get into the England team.
Jamie Sweet
37   Posted 16/11/2011 at 02:28:03

Jason # 36 - that made absolutely no sense at all fella. I'm not sure how any of this proves Osman is shite. That's not to say that he isn't shite, but I don't get the link.

Anyway, Rodders has now had two decent games in an England shirt. Doesn't make him worth anywhere near £30m in my opinion. I think his performances week in week out in the league will determine his true value and so far, they haven't been at that sort of level.

The most important thing I hope to come from his spell in the England team is that it raises his confidence so he can start bossing games like he should be in a blue shirt. Then we can talk about whether we've got a £30m player on our hands or not.

But for now, there are plenty of other players in our squad I would like to see us cash in on before we look to sell a 20 year old England international.

I believe that Rodwell played very well last night and that Capello is raving over him. LB also had a very good game apparently? The issue with selling JR is not how much he goes for or whether he really is worth it but it defines us a a loser club with no ambition or plans for the future.

I'm so sorry to see us slagging off our own players especially those like JR, the slagging of Fellaini is also unfathomable as, for me, he is consistently Everton's best player and rated very highly by other clubs. If either him or JR go then we will miss them whatever we get for them. If it's 15 million then we will never replace them. Osman is what he is, he often plays very well in CM and who can we get to replace him?

Bad times indeed and I can't believe that it isn't having an adverse effect on team spirit

I firmly belive Rodwell is a centre back, why isnt Moyes playing him there?
He has a bright future at centre back but, 30 million is alot of money.
I say wait and see when the bid actually comes then consider it carefully. He is not irreplaceable, guys like Baines are. Barkley is a bright prospect and we might be better off in the long run selling those with high wages. It is a strategy, and nobody even knows what our strategy is anymore.
Moyes does not say, and he doesnt act like there is one.
Moyes must go, that much I know. As must Kenwright for having no balls or vision for what this clubs strategy needs to be.

I would prefer Moyes left for £30m rather than Rodwell! After all the credit that Moyes gets in the media, surely we should get a decent compensation package?

Then we could get in a manager that doesn't shackle his players and let youngsters like Rodwell, Barkley, Gueye and Coleman play their natural attacking games.

He looked excellent playing alongside better players.

I sincerely hope we get a new owner who can back the manager and persuade Rodders and Barkley to stay and become the English equivalent of Xavi and Iniesta.

As an aside, and I never thought I would say this, oh to be able to swap Saha for Zamora. As we look to persist with one up front he would be perfect.

Why is he an idiot Stephen? Hehas his opinion about Rodwell and isn't affraid to state it.

No idiocy there, just an opinion, which I assume you disagree with.

"I firmly belive Rodwell is a centre back, why isnt Moyes playing him there?" - Behave yourself, there is no way that this two footed player, who is comfortable with the ball is a centre half.

Moyes doesn't play his there because a) he is not a central defender and b) he has Jags, Distin and Heitinga there ahead of him.

Mike, maybe we have already signed Zamora, what with that absolute sitter he missed against us.

If he gets sold for £30million, yes it seems like great business, but not when your in a joke of a state like everton are in, hwo much of that money will go towards debts, and with what we have left, who can you buy to replace him of anywhere near the quality.
And, even if we pay the debts off, wee still operating at a loss every season, and if we have to offer him a big contract, that means more money we don't have, simple fact is, were up sh#t creek without a paddle with BK at the helm, the only way we can change that is the whole annoying word I am sick of hearing "Takeover", it's best to believe its all a load of crap, because you only get disappointed when nothing comes of a latest buy out story.
The Qatar group would be perfect, they want a premier league club, yet weirdly they wanted blackburn, but now Venkys have shot down that story, you have to hope that BK is doing all he can to get these people in, but the asking price of the club is too much, we dont own the training ground, we morgaged the stadium, the assets are much less than a lot of clubs, which is investors are put off, because whatever you pay for the club, you would have to pay a lot extra to own everything else.
Come on BK, if you love the club, let it go!!!. I always supported BK, but now the simple fact is, he needs to go, but is he doing enough to attract the potential investors?. My gut instincts tell me NO.

Shame on you if you want to see Rodwell sold. Shame on you.

The only way our club is going to return to good times and challenge for silverware is if we produce a crop of talented youngsters who all break through in a short period of time, coupled with a positive minded manager.

The sight of Rodwell playing a blinder last night at Wembley only drummed it further into my head how shite David Moyes is.

When Rodwell plays for us he looks like he has got a ball and chain attached to him because of how defensively and out of position he is played. David Moyes gives Leon Osman a more prominent role than Jack Rodwell for fucks sake!

Capello played him in the centre as a dynamic box to box midfielder and thats just what England got. Moyes plays him all over the shop, on the wing numerous times this season. For fucks sake you ginger haired toss bag!

I took no pleasure in Jack's performance last night, because I also envisaged Kenwright rubbing his poncey little hands at the thought of how much money he will get off the transfer of him.

Everton is a great club, great fan base, great local players to harvest and we are stuck with a fuckin shite actor off coronation street and a tactically retarded manager.

I certainly watched a different game to you Robbie. What I saw was his trademark, pass it sideways or straight back to whomever passed it to him.

His stats are great because he rarely loses the ball but also rarely does anything exciting with it.

What formation was Capello playing last night? 4-5-1 wasn't it?, with 3 defensive midfielders, Barry, Rodwell and Jones. Yeah really let off the shackles there.

I have not slagged off Rodwell at all. If you look at my comments at beginning of last season and since about Rodwell, I'm a massive supporter of his. I agree totally with what Tony Marsh said abobe.

However, I totally stand by what I said. For 30m I would get rid, without a shadow of a doubt. We are up shit creek and he is not worth 30m, nowhere near. Fuckin hell, get a grip.

"The only way our club is going to return to good times and challenge for silverware is if we produce a crop of talented youngsters who all break through in a short period of time, coupled with a positive minded manager."

Isn't that about as likely as the rich arab making us his plaything?

We'll have to sell some, keep some, invest in some. You can't keep them all and expect to stay afloat. If his stock is high, we'd be mad not to consider it.

And lets face it, he'll be better off learning his trade elsewhere - as painful as that is. Look at Jones, half the player that Rodwell could be but looks outstanding in a team that plays football.
Jon Ferguson
53   Posted 16/11/2011 at 14:01:48

Rodwell is a good player who will get better. We overhype English players (especially our own as Evertonians) and Rodwell has a long way to go, but he has the potential to be a very good midfielder. I think he can play box to box or defensive centre mid (I don?t think that Ciaran is right to dismiss him off in this position). What is clear is that Rodwell can?t pass forwards if no one is in front of him making runs or finding space.

Felliani is looking increasingly unlikely to sign his new contract and so must be sold in January and I think Moyes will start playing Barkley more once he signs his contract. We need to use the money from the sales of Arteta, Felliani and Bily (the money from Piennar, Vaughan, Yakubu, Beckford and Yobo?s loans should be enough to service the debt for the last two seasons) to buy a pacey goal scorer and a winger (Donavon is not the answer but it wouldn?t hurt to get him on loan as well). These players should be fitted around a team built on our home grown players Barkley and Rodwell.
Steve Guy
54   Posted 16/11/2011 at 13:55:16

How anyone thinks selling one of the brightest talents to emerge over the last 5 years is a good idea has to have a few screws loose. Rodwell took to playing Top Class International opponents in his stride this weekend and, but for the width of a goalpost, would have scored on his full international debut; having had an all round excellent couple of games.

I do understand the sentiment for selling. We get £20-£30M for a player who seems out of sorts playing for Everton at the moment (on the basis of what I saw over the weekend I'm not sure it's his fault), but who by his own admission had a poor season last year. However, although I don't agree with selling him (we should be building a new team around him and the likes of Barkley) surely it's obvious that Moyes wouldn't see any of the money anyway. OK, he might get a £5M player here or there but the majority would go to the bank.

This is where I think people are looking at the issue from the wrong end of the telescope. A solvent Club (business) would not sell it's greatest assets and the only reason we would have to sell is down to our lack of solvency.

The heart of the problem remains finance and I hope that Billy BS can be forced into a sale sooner rather than later to better ensure we can keep talents like Barkley and Rodwell.

Robbie Muldoon
55   Posted 16/11/2011 at 14:43:44

Well said Steve Guy, and I can't believe some of the other sentiments being spouted on here. Barkley and Rodwell are absolute gems and we have a pair of homegrown midfielders in them two the whole league will envy!
Stephen Kenny
56   Posted 16/11/2011 at 14:56:23

Tony, those three defensive midfielders either scored, burst through the midfield and put a 1 on 1 wide or hit the post and had numerous good chances to score.

A bit too defensive for my taste that TBH. I'd rather Fabio give our Dave a ring and ask him how it's done.

But with the re-signing of Fellaini, we do have a solid central midfield, and keeping Rodwell would cement that. Hopefully, Barkley can quickly become our new Arteta. But were we to sell Rodwell for £30 million, it would not be a time for pity. We could get a replacement and a 20-goal striker.

Hopefully the Fellaini deal will help to galvanise us as we have looked like a club feeling sorry for ourselves, and have definitely gone backwards in the past two years. I did not expect Felli to sign, but the wages apart (£70 k a week, we probably cannot afford), it's great news.

Use the £10 m from Arteta to get a striker, and allow Billy to leave for enough money for us to get Donovan. I know he's old, but right now we need short-term stability (he has already played for us and well at that) and a short-term boost, and he'd provide both. It would mean we had a balance that has been missing. Wingers on both sides with decent back up in Coleman and Gueye, a strong CM, and at last ??? a striker worthy of the name who is not injured every other week.

Tony when he was 16/17 you had people on here saying that Rodwell was the next Beckenbuaer or Ferdinand and Fellaini was awful after only a handful of appearances, I disagreed and believed it was far too early to make that kind of prediction or judgement but if I had to make a choice I thought he was over hyped and that Fellaini had the more potential. I was shouted down as usual on this site especially when I said that he wasn?t even the next Ferdinand never mind Beckenbauer.

A year or two passed and Fellaini came on leaps and bounds and Rodwell failed to progress, if anything he went backwards. Now, again people are hyping him up because he got his England call up for a friendly during a period of transition for England while a few good midfielders are out injured. Rodwell at best has about as much potential as Carrick but more likely Jenas. If anything I thought Jenas looked more impressive for his first few England caps but he was eventually found out to be an average player.

What did Rodwell do exactly? He played against an average Sweedish side in a friendly who were hardly breaking sweat to close people down, It wasnt a difficult task for Rodwell to not give the ball away and pass backwards and sideways. By the way he did give the ball away when he ran up the wing with the ball and ran it out of play like an amateur.
But lets get one thing straight though, I want to see Rodwell do well but the club comes first and £30m would be great business for Everton in the short term and the long term. Another year will pass and I will be shouted down again because next year is the year Rodwell is going to become the next Gerrard or someone else but I have seen very little improvement since he was 17.
