Man Utd set to bid £22M for Rodwell

With just half the transfer window left open, the dreadful CaughtOffside website appears to be making up stuff again, with Sir Alex supposedley readying a £22M bid for Jack Rodwell, who is currently injured.

I hope the dreadful CaughtOffside is right in this case!

22million quid would be a great return for Jack. For me, he is a good player, but has not shown any evidence that he is a great player for us in the future.

I would welcome the chance of recouping serious money, as long as it can be reinvested in rebuilding.

If not, I'm sure he'll do a decent job for us.

Steve,I would suggest anyone who has seen what's been happening at this club recently will know any potential fee recieved for Rodwell WON'T go towards team rebuilding.

Ste,

Deep down I agree. However, having lived in the USA for the past 13 years I'm slowly adopting the American's positive outlook on everything!

You never know!

I`d be amazed if, when he signs for Utd we get more than £12m but no doubt it will be an undisclosed fee anyway. Just have to see if it's the end of January or the summer.

sell - sell - sell - sell - but only so long as the sponds becomes a transfer kitty, which if it did, by the way, would only happen in summer - and we have a habit of squirrelling away money away from new incoming to, we assume, chipping away at the debt that shithouse gobshite Billy Liar built

Having given him a lucrative new contract, I assume the club are rather hoping Fellaini will be the subject of a substantial offer, which we'll pretend to refuse before acquiescing, sooner rather than later.

Matt, the fee will be £22 million of which we'll get £12 million cash plus Giggs and Scholes.

If Rodwell is sold for anything like that, there's more chance of me winning the lottery while getting a blow job off lady gaga while nigella lawson cooks the apres blow job meal than Moyes receiving any more than 2mill. Jeez the naivety of some people

It's all money. It all helps the bottom line. If it's cash on delivery, take it. If it's the same bullshit structured deal we got for Rooney, forget it. Incidentally, Eric, was that sarcasm? I doubt either Scholes or Giggs are part of the deal. It makes no sense for them. They both want to end their days at United and Giggs isn't going to take any guff from the likes of David Moyes at his age. Nor is Moyes, who is a control freak, going to take on anyone who has forgotten more than he'll ever learn. Maybe I'm losing my sense of humour.

Rodwell is the life blood of the club that flows through the academy system. He represents the future of the club and to sell him or Barkley would genuinely spell the end of EFC as a serious club. He is an international at every level and a Rolls Royce of a player with still massive potential.
Derek Thomas
184   Posted 16/01/2012 at 02:36:37

Key word 'potential'... If they want to pay 22M for him it's their gamble that the unspoken word...'unfulfilled' doesn't apply. The better the players around him, how he is coached / instructed to play and the final position he plays in will decide this and we all know that 2M will be knocked off the 22M for Gibson.

Martin Mason. The days when Everton were taken serious as a club already ended years ago mate.

Although I do agree with your sentiment of keeping Rodwell.

He will be sold and they might bring in 2 plus wages. Club is not going to be bought and that will prolong Bills tenure for another season. If I had a stack of cash to invest I wouldn't buy Everton now. I'd wait for the inevitable administration and pick it debt free. The stadium issue AND the debt mean you have to be mad to buy now. This is not a statement in support or otherwise of Kenright before I get hammered. Just how I see it.

Not sarcasm Peter, just re-stating the deal we got for Rooney, a bit of cash and 2 old crocks.

Painful as it is selling rodwell may just save this club. Presuming that we have begun to balance our finances better by taking off high earners like arteta, pienaar, yakubu and yobo we might just be able to stop running at a loss. If we put 22m from rodwell with the arteta/beckford money then our debt should be back around the 10m mark.

The reduced debt repayments along with lower wage outgoings might hopefully mean

A) that we don't run at a loss
B) that we don't have to sell any more players for financial reasons
C) that we actually become more attractive to investors

Of course the downside is that we lose a potential future Everton and England captain. But I believe that sir Alex has it right when he plays a runner and a passer in central mid. Fellaini is a runner. Gibson is a passer. Rodwell is kind of in between. I think actually fella and gibbo could form a very effective partnership with Barkley coming into it more next season. So if we get offered cash over 20m, I say sadly that we should sell up, sort out the debt and then move on.

208   Posted 16/01/2012 at 08:58:05

Potential maybe ? but I've only seen him deliver one moment of magic/potential and that was against Utd.

He's worth more in the bank than on the bench. or warming the treatment table!

It would be lovely to see £22m being spent on the team but half of that on the team and half on the debt would do me. Not forgetting the bit we'll get for Billy.

209   Posted 16/01/2012 at 09:05:42

It worries me that a lot of our fans see Rodwell going as a good move. Fellaini is not half the player Rodwell is.

The problem I had with the Gibson move is not the player, but the position: if we were looking to off-load Fellaini and use that money on a wide player, then I would've been happy with Gibson coming. But no-one appears to want Fellaini ? I wonder why?

However, it's clear that Rodwell is very saleable... which is worrying. It's also likely that any cash raised from Rodwell will not put a significant dent in our secured debt; it will probably go towards the interest.
Lee Smith
213   Posted 16/01/2012 at 09:28:48

Sam, I thought the sale of Rooney was meant to have 'saved this club', and look where we still are now. Selling Rodwell will only fix the consequences of having a poor board, it will not fix the cause. If we do sell him, I just think we will be in exactly the same position in 2 years time if we aren't SOLD. And I mean SOLD, not 'recieve additional investment'.
James McPherson
216   Posted 16/01/2012 at 09:40:49

Sam, if we could guarantee that any proceeds from Rodwell's transfer would be managed effectively then yes, there's a fairly strong rationale to indeed sell.

However, don't think there are many who still believe that to be the case.

The level of debt is an interesting point. In the scheme of things, comparing it to other clubs in the prem, it is in many ways not that bad.

There are only two types of debt in reality; manageable and unmanageable. That's not a monetary assessment. Ours is the latter as we know. It's the structure and repayment conditions that blight us now. It's the latter due to the lack of business acumen sat within our board and of course Kenwright (at its head).

We have taken so many awful decisions along the way, it's hard now to see a way out other than administration. For sure, that's what any propspective buyer is now waiting for - the club can be picked up for a fraction of the price now quoted in a matter of months. Perversely, you would worry about the savviness of anyone investing now - it's pointless.

217   Posted 16/01/2012 at 09:54:53

The only reason we are still talking about ac's Potential is because Moyes has taken him as far as he can go.
Most of the players he trains with would not get in any
Team above us.
Just look at how Jones and Smalling have come on
with proper coaching.
If I were the Father, never mind the Agent of either Rodwell or Barkley I would be very strongly urging them to move on. And to even think that any money raised would go to team building GET REAL.
Under the Current Board this club is only going one way

I started a mail bag thread on this site's rumours of McRooney's return as I saw something in it.

The Gibson transfer for me was all about who he's replacing and this all ties in. If true, BK would have given a nudge and wink to the banks to let him 'buy' our first player for two years knowing its all included in the structure of the Rodwell transfer.

If Milner and Johnson are this value then I suppose its acceptable, its just a shame 8 years on it still feels we gave away Rooney on the cheap.

Should we go for it? Depends who you value more at Everton, Rodwell or Moyes. Though I'm in the pro Moyes camp is Rodders really going to blossom as he should under the ginger one?

(But that would only mean doing so at Utd and seeing what he becomes we get another 8 years of being pissed off we under valued our best player)
Sam Hoare
221   Posted 16/01/2012 at 10:14:37

James, you might be right. In fact you are definitely right along with lee about the boards mistakes in the past. Ideally we would be sold. But that doesn't look like happening any time soon.

Assuming that bill is here to stay for the next few years at least I believe sadly that selling jack in order to reduce crippling debt repayments and hopefully stop the club running at a loss is the only way forward.

In a perfect world new owners would step in, but in our world I believe 22m for rodwell can help us put the ship back on course at least temporarily.
Robbie Muldoon

Jack has all the physical ability to be as good as stevie gbh across the park, but in my opinion he doesnt have the drive or mentality to be a really top player and i dont think he will improve that much as a player regardless of where he goes.

Even though hes in a shite side he should still be trying to take games by the scruff of the neck but he just doesnt. He doesnt get enough goals, and his range of passing is turd.

I would sell for half of 22 million if given the chance.
Tony Watson
234   Posted 16/01/2012 at 10:39:35

Bite their hand off - he's not worth anything like that sort of money.

Pay £12m off the debt, which will reduce outgoings, and spend the other £10m on 2-3 new players - see if Moyes can uncover the next batch of Cahills, Artetas and Lescotts.
Gary Mortimer
239   Posted 16/01/2012 at 10:42:58

Neil 225 - I think it isn't about jack's "the drive or mentality" it's about the fear instilled by Moyes' tactics.

As a young player it's probably better to play a simple and safe pass rather then trying something adventurous. that way you avoid the hairdryer for dropping a clamger.

Most Everton players at the moment are playing in fear. How many times do we start a break only for the player to turn back and slow it all down by playing a safe sideways or backwards pass?

If Jack or Felli are sold to ease the finances, if i had to choose i would sell the big feller - he's too inconsistant in my view. Then again Jack is a bit injury prone . . . .

Either way anything like £20m would be a good deal financially, but a bad sign tio the fans and other players.

Would be a good move all round. Sadly, we can't help Jack realise his potential, and we need the money. We can't afford to keep potential.

If its 15m+ then the deal goes through immediately.

And Moyes gets his pick of sub 2m players from the lower leagues.

244   Posted 16/01/2012 at 11:36:50

On the face of it £20m for Rodwell does seem a little over the top considering his form at the moment. Even so a great many people would be pissed off with such a move. The effect on gate receipts could be catastrophic for the club. But we've got used to such one-eyed strategies from this board.
James Martin

If Henderson and Downing are worth 20 million then surely Rodwell should be sold for more, whether he is worth it or not.

250   Posted 16/01/2012 at 12:13:41

It's always tempting when we read a story like this to speculate on how Everton might use the money. As ever though, it's a pointless exercise. The reality is that it's extremely unlikely that either United or Chelsea will be knocking at our door this month. Both clubs have other priorities, and have no reason to think that Everton will be selling Rodwell on the cheap. If one of them did make a speculative offer, I suspect it would be closer to £10m than the made-up £22m figure in the story, and Everton would have no difficulty in turning it down.
Kevin Tully

As usual, the deal with involve a swap with their reserves, and I wouldn't be surprised if Gibson was already part of it.

Judging by Rodwell's average performance this season have we had the best from him already? Or is it our training methods or tactics? There are a lot of players underperforming this season ,don't get me started on Cahill & Saha ! Or maybe it's the manager? Who knows ? We can write tomes about Everton to make us feel better but we don't honestly have any influence on anything really do we?!Incidently I always imagined "Caught Offside" to be a bunch of teenagers in hoodies in their bedroom making up rumours about football in between wanks!! Yeah, great line up, but no strikers. Frankly, Fellaini, Barkley gibson, plus Donovan and a £15 m striker, sounds a lot better to me.

We haven't had a recognised - usually fit - Prem striker for two seasons. I remember people waffling on about Champs League qualification 18 months, even though we had no strikers. And that was with Arteta. Guess what? Never happened, not even nearly.

Posted this on the Gibson Thread re maybe part of a Rodwell deal:

A close family member of Rodder's, in general conversation when asked about Jack, said, "He (Jack) really wants to stay at Everton but he has a bad feeling he may be sold as the club need the money."
Personally, I hope he stays.

I think leaving for Utd would be the best decision for the player himself. Just cannot see Moyes being able to get the best out of him and with better players, manager and coaches, he can achieve his potential, which Moyes currently seems unable to do. See difference in eg England game and then how he played when he came back.

I dont think Moyes know how to play him properly nor what his best role is having played as a defensive, central and attacking centre mid as well as in defence and on the wing! When he inevitably leaves, I would not be surprised to see him really improve as a player, IMO we are holding him back - as much as it pains me to say it.

So what will happen in three years time? Will United have Rooney, Rodwell, and Barkley all playing together? Is that our future?? Selling our best players to United and getting their rejects in return??

Our future midfield of Barkley - Rodwell - Fellaini - Gibson - Coleman will come good.

Can we include Billy to sweeten the deal.. He could play the Scholes role, behind the United strikers ? Got a good shot Etc.. Etc..

Sell him use the 22 million to pay off some debt.
For those guys who really do the maths, where will this leave us financially when you take in the sales in the summer and reductions in the wage bill.
Just as a rough calculation if we sell Rodwell then include Mcfadden and Gibson signing(not Donovan) we must be saving somewhere in the region of 10 million a year in salary.
Then 22 million for Rodwell, surely we start to look solvent and a real investment opportunity.

The arrival of Darron Gibson for the stomach churning sum of... let's say £2m for arguments sake... surely means Blue Bill will look to offload somebody for anything over five times that amount!

So, that got me thinking. Who? The answer, it's going to be Rodwell... right? I can't see us getting through this transfer window without another deduction from our ranks and after Rodwell's decent turns in an England shirt not so long back, surely one of the London clubs - Chelsea? Tottenham? Arsenal? - are going to snap him up.

It makes sense really, he and Gibson are kind of like for like midfielders and with a fully fit squad we'd have a few players who Moyes considers centre midfield quality. So, it seems inevitable that Billy Liar will look to cash in.

Moyes admitted he wouldn't see any of the Arteta money so is Gibson's arrival a precursor for Rodwell's departure?
