Sky Sports sources understand Everton are weighing up a shock move to sign Wolves striker Kevin Doyle before the close of the transfer window.

Doyle is no longer first choice at Molineux due to the impressive form of Steven Fletcher this season and has started only one of the last six Premier League matches.
The Republic of Ireland international has also scored just twice in the League this term and has been linked with a January move away.
He was mooted as a target for Everton last summer, but Wolves boss Mick McCarthy insisted the 28-year-old was not for sale.
The Toffees were also rumoured to be interested in signing Doyle from Reading before the forward joined Wolves in a big-money deal in 2009.

Why waste cash on these no-marks? Yes, we need a 20-goals-a-season striker but surely Vic and Stracq deserve a bit more of a chance after recent goals under limited playing time?
And give McAleny a go... We need someone creative to replace Landon when he leaves... Gary Lineker couldn't have got more than ten a season with Osman Cahill et al as his supply Line.

Phil has it nailed on a classic Moyes type player, big useless lump able to hold the ball up and sod all else, a poor man's Kevin Davies

Gavin, Kevin Doyle is far better than Kevin Davies. Davies never scored 15 goals in the prem like Doyle did back when he was playing for Reading.
I agree that he is a Moyes type of player, but no fans want a lazy fucker playing for their team. Doyle will run around and fight for every ball and also he might add a bit of energy into our slow and dour football with his running. He is also great in the air so could get on the end of plenty of Bainsey's crosses but he would be a great signing, even if he can't get in the Wolves team.
By the way, if he joins, are we about to become the Ireland B Team with Seamo, Gibby, Duffer and possibly Doyler.

Ok, his goal record is not prolific, however he runs the channels well, holds up the ball, and if given the right supply, he will score goals. On average he scores around 10-12 goals a season - better than any of our strikers at the club at the moment.
Given the way Moyes likes to play, Doyle could be exactly what we are looking for and will be far more effective than Saha. If we can get him for a decent fee (£3-4m) then I think he could be what we are looking for.
He's also at a good age and has Premier League experience, which given our lack of money we need to ensure whoever we sign can make an immediate impact.
I'd be fairly happy if we managed to pull this signinig off.

Well said Paddy, there's a few people on this site who need to pull their head out of the clouds and accept we're not the side we once were. We don't have the financial clout to bring in a top striker. A proven goal scorer who has fallen out of favour may not be bad business. This kind of player often respond well to a move to a new side as it seems to reinvigorate them, in the same way it appears to have done for the Yak in his move to Blackburn.

And Strac isn't going to be a solution until he can last longer than 60 minutes! (although in fairness he ran his arse off against Fulham). Great to see him get off the mark too

Ciaran, 2006-07 I assume you are on about him playing for Reading in the Prem? He scored 13 which is only one better than Kevin Davies's best league haul for Bolton of 12 in 2008-09.
He's a similar player, causes problems for defences by being a pain in the arse nuisance but please don't wax lyrical that he's some form of striking magic, old school barn door barge merchant like Biffa before him.

I think Doyle is a decent player but my worry would be that he is recovering from injury and also that at 28 he probably won't have much resale value and at the moment we have to think carefully about finances.
In an ideal world, we buy a great 23-24-year-old who does well and we can then sell for a profit when he's 29 or so...

Kevin Doyle is a quality player. And he would fit right into our side. He can play on his own upfront because he runs his heart out.
I wouldn't mind him at Everton.

As for Kevin Doyle? Plenty of effort and endeavour, puts a shift in for the team, selfless but goal shy. He can hold the ball up well and is decent in the air but the big downside for me is he's another player totally lacking in pace.

The prospect of signing Kevin Doyle reminds me of signing Andy Gray in late '83 - also a bit of an "industrial" type striker - also from Wolves, having started to fade after a big money transfer a few years before (from Villa).
He was only with us for a couple of seasons before he lost his place in the side and we sold him on back to Villa - but they were a couple of decent seasons for sure. And his impact on the atmosphere at the club was incredible at the time - taking it from depression to optimism during the first training session if rumours are to be believed.
Of course not expecting anything like that from Doyle...or even for us to sign Doyle...but if we did he, like Gray in 1983 fits our requirements. Gray did so well that we were able to afford replacing him with Gary Linneker - then the most desired striker in the First Division

Doyle and Gray are as different as night and day - AG was 'industrial' if that's the right word - Doyle is nothing like that at all - if anything, he is Inchy, if we must compare - AG scoring that stracq like on the ground header at N-County or knocking the ball out of Sherwood's hands 6 weeks later, that isa million miles away from Doyle - the only thing in common is Wolves - and, hopefully, Doyle is not a total fucking gobshite like shithouse Gray

I have only seen Doyle play a couple of times. I thought he was good in the air with a mediocre touch (like Andy Gray) - although certainly more mobile than AG. But would be delighted if he was a bit more like Inchy (and agree on the gobshite comment - and hopefully not the same complex personal life as AG)

We all like different types of forwards - but whichever one, if any, they have to have good service which, the way Moyes picks his team, they won't.
The way he continues to pick Cahill and Saha is to me a big mistake, it just does not work. If we can see it, why can't Moyes? There is nothing wrong with playing the long ball out from the back, which Jags does a lot, but you need a big lad to win it and then for someone to feed off it; but Moyes likes the forwards all chasing back...

I've always admired his workrate and 10-12 goals a season is okay, he would be an adequate partner for anyone.
I would not be too unhappy with this going through ? and it's no more than we can expect with our funds available.

As a Wolves Fan with a long running admiration for Everton. This supposed transfer led to me roam both fans boards.
I must admit when Doyle first turned up he was the best player I have ever seen at Wolves, he's good in the air, holds it up well and runs all day.
As for his form this season, the niggling injuries have slowed his progress. However, I think it comes more down to a good player needing a better club. For the first time in three seasons you can see Doyle just fed up of running all day at Wolves and then feeding off scraps which most of the time he sets up himself.
I would be genuinely sad to see the guy go, he's been unbelievable for us, but I think it could be the best move for all three parties.
With better service from the midfield, Doyle will get you 13+ goals a season, coupled with a tireless work effort and great hold-up play. I really don't see why people are slating him so much. He's no Messi but, for £6m, I'd have Doyle over Jelavic all day.

Drew draw yourself a pint of the black stuff and remember football is far beyond some yard dog hoofer and barn door then come back and remind me how much you know about football. Its all about opinions and mine is that Doyle is a yard dog and old school in the same mould as Kevin Davies, oddly enough beyond the MoTD I saw him play in the flesh for Reading as I was working down there and friends were season ticket holders and I stand by the poor mans Davies and seen him for Wolves and guess what it still hasn't changed my mind.

Andy Gray should be an Everton Legend. He scored some memorable goals including the Watford FA Cup Final. Give me another Andy Gray and if that's Kevin Doyle, so be it.
Maybe we could trade Anchibe and Saha in this window and maybe someone will give us £6m for Cahill at 32 ok maybe £2mil then... It would be very good business from Mr Moyes. I don't think it will happen somehow.
