Speculation was rife this evening that while Louis Saha is set to make a surprise move to Tottenham, Steven Pienaar could be returning to Goodison Park on a loan-to-buy basis, although reports suggesting the South African was on his way to Finch Farm were quashed with sightings of him on the pitch at White Hart Lane around 6.30pm.

Indeed, Pienaar was named among Spurs' substitutes for their game against Wigan this evening and even though the BBC's Phil McNulty suggests that the deal is a "still a possibility" it does look unlikely at this point.

He may well be keeping our bench warm while we have Drenthe and Landon to select from. He will come in handy once Landon heads home though.

Wouldn't have taken him back after binning us for the bright lights of London paved with gold . Greedy bastard. Who's paying his wages for the next 6 months? How much will he be on this time ? Less than before he left? Should've let him rot on the bench at Spurs.

Be fair,lads, Pienaar didn't slag EFC or the fans off when he left. He's 29 and took the chance to play CL football while he still could and I can't blame him for that,can you,in all honesty? Can you also say that you wouldn't move to a better paid job with better prospects if it were offered?
Also EFC trousered £2m which helped stave off the lovable banks. A bit different to when Lescott or Rooney went, but now I'd find it difficult to argue against their decisions. They've both won trophies which thay'll be able to show their grandchildren and earned a shed full of money. Get real.

Drenthe worked really hard last night, although he needs to curb his reckless tackling, (kudos to Richards for not making a meal of it). Bringing back Pienaar will sadly probably put paid to his appearances in a blue shirt.
Also when are we going to see Barkley on the field again with the abundance of midfielders now at Moyes disopsal. He'll be gone in the summer I fear..

Drenthe just needs to get his linked successfully linked up with his brain and he will be unstoppable.
I fear he doesn't know what he is going to do before his legs have done it.
Pienaar will take over from Landon and Drenthe will probably swap wings to play infront of Hibbert/Neville.
What's going to happen with Coleman and Ossie? At least this is a good problem now.
It's just that we will be screwed when all the loans end

I am pleased to have Pienaar back. It was widely predicted on Toffeeweb and elsewhere that he would never be a first choice player at Tottenham and this has proven to be the case. Pienaar belongs at Everton, perhaps he will now realise that. He is far from being a great player, but he is a very good one within Everton's playing style and I am confident that he will improve the team significantly in the coming months.

Brain, so many of us agreed that Baines made him look better than what he is.
His ego must have been in overdrive to think he would get in that Spuds team before Bale, Moderic, Van Der Vaart or Lennon.

I doubt there's many who can be completely honest with themselves and objective about their own skills and abilities. It must be 10x harder surrounded by Yes men.
I've got a lot of respect for him for going there and having a go. I've also got a lot of respect for him for coming back, it can't be easy to walk back into FF knowing he failed.
Him and Baines were a brilliant combo and I wouldn't say one played a bigger part than the other, only Baines still looked a great player without him. I'm glad their back together although I've got a feeling he might find himself playing in his 'South Africa' role a bit more this time round.

Pienaar worked his ass off for the team until the day he left. He never hung his head, never said a negative word, just wanted the opportunity to play in a Champions League team. It wasn't going to happen and he wanted to come back. How is that a bad thing? He wants to come back here, he begged the manager to send him here to play. I'm thrilled to have him back and can't wait to see him link up with Baines and Fellaini again.

Tony, hope I'm wrong but I'm not convinced that Moyes will play Pienaar and Drenthe in the same starting 11.
Osman will be on the right when he returns.

Pienaar is a great player alongside Baines. It's all about blend and it is fantastic to see him come back. He always gave 100% and was frequently our most effective midfield player.

Well said David (596) couldn´t agree more lets welcome him back and see if he can rekindle the understanding he had with Baines and what a predicament for Moyes with all these options he has now.Lets see if he can pick a team that plays attractive attacking football. I know I´m living in cloud cuckoo land but I´m an optimist. COYB

I don't agree. I think they made each other look a better player. Their link up play was a highlight of our play and the team suffered once he'd left.As did Baines.

Sorry lads , but i don't accept all this "wouldn't you move for a better paid job " " Playing in the Champions League" bollocks. Boo Fucking Hoo the poor Premier League footballer was only only getting most peoples yearly wage a week and couldn't afford a new Ferrari to drink drive in again! Pienaar fucked us off for pastures new and its turned sour like everyone expected and now we're to welcome him with open arms. I wonder how the whipping boys like Hibbert and Osman will think the next time they get bollocked by the fans as Pienaar gets an ovation. Why do we love ex players like Labby and Mick Lyons so much ? its because all they ever thought of was playing for Everton and wanting to win for Everton, not thinking about winning for someone else and lining their pockets. I understand footballers are not fans but we are Everton and maybe we wouldn't be in such a decline if we didn't accept things like taking Pienaar back so easily. Think of the squad we'd have now if the players who have left would still be here pushing for Champions League places with us instead? Maybe its time we all started to 'get real ' and remember the Labbys and Ballys and what Everton meant to them . Pienaar first months wages should go straight into the Former Players Foundations bank account!!

Piennars narrow wide midfield play(he would prefer to play central) was perfect for Baines overlapping. They are both really intelligent footballers and had a great understanding. We have badly missed their combination play.
Pienaar has played all over Europe for better sides than us. He is clearly good enough to be a squad man for a side playing consistent champions league football, which is what Spurs are aiming to do. If your gonna do that you need a big squad, and Piennaar can play all across midfield. All thats pretty clear, imo.
He got injured at the wrong time, lost momentum, fitness and the move didnt take off. It happens.
On Drenthe, if can be coached into engaging his football brain so he can harness his talent, then we could, just could, end up with that elusive balance we mostly lacked in mid(problem right side) when Pienaar was here first time, aside from when Donovan was here.
Drenthe is a wild card, but he has things we dont have and you cant coach. It took Nani till he was about 23/24 till he became a responsible, effective footballer. Mourinho disciplined Joe Cole into the most effective football of his career. Its a long shot but maybe we can with Drenthe.
There is definitely a player there somewhere. Moyes will have to weigh it up end of season. Drenthes attitude may be the defining factor.
