Everton linked with Dempsey move

This being Everton I reckon we will go for Dempsey and end up with Makepeace

I see the mirror reckon Baines could go to united for 5m due to our tiny coffers. Honest to god the best left back in the league for 5m. I can only assume the lazy hack doesn't actually watch football, or that he has missed a 2 in front of that number. If you are going to make things up,, make it realistic you dope.

Baines for 5m is ridiculous even by tabloid standards.

Dempsey is quality but as with Pienaar i just worry that in our financial state we can't really afford to spend much on players with no re-sale value. Surely younger players must be the way forward. I would be looking at the likes of Moses, Naughton, Jarvis, Hoilett, Diame, Tarabaat (only on basis of his last few games!) and any of the youngsters at Athletic Bilbao who might fancy a shot in the premier league.

The fact is that until we can clear our crippling debt we should be buying younger players who will increase in value. We have a really strong core in Heitinga, Fellaini and Jelavic if we can add some pace and energy we could have the best team we've had in a while next season.

I have been saying for a while on other sites that we should go for Dempsey, he is a terrific player. I don't think he will come to us however due to our inability to compete with other teams regarding wages and transfer fee. Pity.
Another player I mentioned ages ago on another site was Bas Dost from Heerenveen. A prolific, young, big striker who wouldn't cost too much hopefully. The only trouble is that his agent is touting him about now and so others will probably come sniffing! If that fails, Jelle Vossen at Genk is another good bet.

What the fuck are our scouts doing?? There are lots of good players playing for lesser clubs than Everton and most of the players mentioned by Sam (#262) are playing for relegation threatened teams but would walk into our present squad.

We need a big influx to replace Neville, Cahill, Osman, Hibbert and Distin ? all have had their day. Although I really admire DISTIN, he is too old to continue in the Premier League for much longer.

Sam @ 262 - we have no chance of getting any BIlbao players. Muniain's agent is currently touting him at £25.9m! The rest of hugely sought after and therefore very expensive.

The only player you mention who I think is a genuine possibility is Jarvis. We need a right midfielder and I reckon Jarvis is a Moyes type of player.

Here's one to throw into the mix: Nzogbia. We were after him when he was at Wigan but he's had a nightmare at Villa, so he's probably available at a greatly reduced price. Good player, if he can recover his form.
Dempsey would be a perfect replacement for Cahill, but I doubt he'll be coming; he's probably after more money and/or a chance of silverware.

I'd be amazed if Dempsey came to us but then again he's 29 so probably looking for a final 'big' move, could see him at Spurs or LFC out of the teams with cash. After that I guess it's us / Newcastle / Sunderland / Villa possibly....?

If we could get him for £4m I'd snap their hands off, tailor made replacement for Cahill with a few years on his side. Plus I don't think he's run himself ragged in quite the same way as Tim has.

Dempsey would be a great signing, even at 29; he could still give us 3 or 4 years. Jarvis of Wolves also or Moses of Wigan would also provide some pace and energy. We also need someone up front other than Jelavic so I would go for Steve Fletcher of Wolves, perfect for the sort of game we play.

Forget anybody else ? just get Pienaar at all costs; he was the missing difference between Liverpool & Everton in the semi.

Just the player in my opinion to replace the fading influence of Tim Cahill. Dempsey's aggression, work-rate and never say die attitude would tick all the boxes on what is usually required of a player at Everton, he would be a fantastic acquisition along with Landon Donovan - USA, USA USA !!!!!!!!!!!

The player to replace Tim Cahill is... Maroane Fellaini.

We need another genuine CM to play along side Gibson and possibly two wide players.

Dempsey is class but will cost upwards of 10m so its a no go. Pienaar plus a winger and backup striker for jelavic is a must.

Dempsey is a good player and could blend well. With Pienaar's future uncertain, better to get him.

But something has to be done for the defense, Distin in really bad, Heitinga is not consistent and the others are...

We need one solid defender, all rounder if possible. It is our defense that has let the team down most of the time.

Dempsey would be good but out of are reach i think.. Two wide men, a back up stricker and put Peanuts in centre midfield that would do me.....

I think we may already have Cahills replacement in the shape of Jack Rodwell playing in a more advanced role like he did for England in November.....and with Gibson and Fellani as the middle 2 theres always the oppotunity for him and Felli to switch roles during games.

Get Rodwell fit and lets see what all the talk has been about. Hes tall, athletic and can shoot with either foot. I feel hed slot into the Cahill role with ease

I'm sure there's people on Fulham fansites saying "£4m for Dempsey, these tabloids are having a laugh!!". In much the same way we are responding to the Leighton Baines story.

If there was any truth in it however, would love to see him playing for Everton, he's spent a lot of time on the left wing at Fulham and can play anywhere on the front line.
With Jelavic up front , Pineaar on the left, Dempsey on the right (swapping sides occasionally) and Fellaini just behind I reckon we'd be pretty formidable going forwards.

Shame I just cant see us getting him ahead of other clubs and for any less than £8m, even with only one year left on his contact.

I live opposite Fulham's training ground in South West London, so I've decided I'm going to put a speaker in the window and blast the Z-Cars during their training sessions........maybe it'll have some sort of subliminal Derren Brown style affect on him

A lot of talk re replacing Cahill, I see it another way. Why do we need to replace Cahill at all? Bear with me...(I know I am going to be stated after this post but its bugged me for ages).

My view (for many years not just the last 12-18 months) has been that Cahill is actually a very ordinary footballer. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate what he has done in the past when picked. Plenty of guts and was great when he chipped in with the odd goal coming off late runs, but as far as the basics were/are concerned. i.e. skill, pace, creativity, shooting, tackling, crossing, passing etc, a pretty average footballer IMO.

Many people always raved on about his goals (usually around 7-8 league goals a season I think, with not many assists, 3-4 a season) but I would have expected at least as many goals and assits from a 2nd striker or a proper forward - had we played one regularly instead of Cahill. Keep in mind his main role was as a second striker most of the time (even though he is neither a striker nor actually a CM in the 442 sense and niether a forward in the classic sense either - in fact we tend to call it the 'cahill role' because it doesnt actually have a name - he's just there to cause a nuisance and defend from the front and maybe nick the odd goal).

Anyway I digress from my opening point. Why not bring in a proper attacking/ creative midfileder or a proper forward/second striker in the classic sense instead of trying to look for another 'cahll role'? Dempsey is not the ideal person the play the Cahill role - there is NO ideal person as the role should not exist in teh first place.

Dempsey would me a great addition as he is simply a very good footballerm with pace and vision, and has grown into the second striker/forward role in the last couple of years. When he first came to Fulham he played in the middle more. I for one would love for him to be at GP (sssuming he is allowed to play his natural game and not told to defend from the front as priority).

Bugger all chance he'll come though as he could go to a 'bigger' club.

Again, before I get slated, I of course appreciate Cahills contribution to the club over the years. However, I also believe if we had a more positive/attack minded manager, cahill would not have played as many games for us as he actually did. (If he is/was such a great player, why have there hardly been any bids for him in the 8 odd years he's been with us? I can only remember a rumour of a 3m bid from QPR last summer - if that was true it was madness not to accept the cash and free up 50k a week on the wage bill).

Anyway, I expect I'm going to get a lot of abuse now as so many people on here hold Cahill in 'legend' status. Above is my opinion. I would prefer a quicker, more creative player in the number 10 role.

Cahill was great for us for 3 or 4 seasons. He's got a great attitude, he works his antipodean arse off and loves the club but he is incredibly average technically.... On the ball he offers pish-all.

I am a huge fan of Timmy and what he has done for Everton, but Moyes should have shipped him some years ago when he was worth something.

I have held Cahill in high regard in recent years and I believe when he was injured for a spell about 3 years ago we really missed him. He has always been a hard worker, with confidence and a certain arrogance ( I love the way he winds up opposition fans and defenders with his niggly antics and yet has managed not to get a reputation with referees ).

However........ I cant disagree with any of what you posted above.

I would point out though, that he is good for our international appeal as the Ozzies (those that care about "soccer" ) love him and they would never have heard of Everton FC were it not for him.

I believe he should be offered a non playing role sooner rather than later, with reduced wages but the respect he deserves having given all he can to the Everton cause over the years.
Maybe we could send him out to Australia as a scout, god knows they produce some athletes out there!!

By the way, back on topic. I'd snatch Jol's arm off if he offered Dempsey for £4M... good player - way better than Cahill. But there's no way, he's too good to go for that price.

And then there's the question of whether we'll have £4M to spend on a player this summer. I'm sure the answer will be similar to the question of whether the missus will invite Megan Fox round for a threesome....
