Blues to 'pounce' on Olsson

The Daily Mail claims that Everton are ready to pounce for West Brom contract rebel Jonas Olsson with the defender's stay the The Hawthorns heading for an end this summer.

The towering Sweden international is yet to put pen to paper on a new contract and with just 12 months left to run, the Baggies could be forced to cash in on the 29-year-old rather than risk losing him on a free.
David Moyes is believed to be a huge admirer of 6ft 4in Olsson, whose future is further complicated by the uncertainty of departing manager Roy Hodgson's future replacement.
Olsson is prepared to wait until after Euro 2012 - in which he will play against England in Ukraine this summer - before deciding his fate but the defender has previously hinted he wants to move on to a bigger club.

By "pounce" they mean wait for a couple of months... by which time, plenty of other clubs will be tempted by him and he will eventually join Spurs!

The first three signings should be wide or creative players. I'm not interested in anyone else until that's done (which it won't be of course).

Think it will depend largely on if we receive any big offers for our players which is why Moyes always says he wants to do business early but has to wait until last minute bids from other clubs like last summer with Arteta.
I should think it will be quiet with Pienaar coming in with maybe some cheap 'wonderkid' and no big names leaving.

Doesn't fit the usual Moyes profile at all, he's old, in a position were we already have too much competition and would cost money. Can't see this one happening.

If Bainesy has expressed a desire for CL footy, and someones willing to give us serious money for him, another defender, to allow Distin to shift left more permanently, might be an idea until Garbutt is ready to step up.
Moyes likes having a big 'un in the centre of defence and if Distin did shift to left back permanent that would leave us a bit 'short' in the middle with Jags and Johnny.
If we are possibly looking at losing Bainsey this could be a fairly good option to keep the back shored up and be able to spend a good chunk of the fee a bit farther up the pitch???

I would say that Left Back is not a priority and should not be our best player Steve, but to advocate just shoe horning a CB there wont work. Today full back is a specialist position. I think with more creative flair in midfield we COULD (though we don't want to sell) live without him

I can't believe what I am reading here.
Sell our consistently best player who has the most assists and score free kicks and penalties for fun.
Baines is invaluable to the squad and barring the recent injury is the fittest player at the club.
His partnership with Pienaar needs to be developed not destroyed.
By all means sell the fringe players but not the core of the team.

Fair one Mark, but, didnt Distin start out on the left at PSG?. Olsson is similar in that he's claimed to be able to play in the centre or on the left.
All I'm saying is IF Bainesy was looking to trot on, and we wanted to cover a gap for a couple of seasons until young Garbutt was ready, this lad from the Baggies might be an inexpensive way of doing it.
I'd just state that now we look to have the makings of a natural goalscorer for him to supply and a chance of getting his favourite hunting partner back in Pienaar I'd hope/expect Bainesy will give us another season.

The argument rests squarely on the idea that Garbutt will ever be ready. Anyone got any ideas how he has got on at Cheltenham?

re Garbutt at Cheltenham. The lower leagues aren't always a good pointer for the Premiership. Seamus was outstanding for Blackpool in The Championship.

Garbutt and Bidwell are both about 18/19 I think. If one of these lads will become good enough and Baines were to leave in the summer, we would be better off finding a stop-gap left-back for a season or two. Expecting a teenager to be first choice and only left-back at the club would be a bit much. It's not the same as Barkley who has competition in his place and can be taken out of the side if form dictates.

True, but, seeing as Garbutt has had to be released by the England U19 squad to help Cheltenham in their promotion playoff match I think its safe to assume that the lad has some ability!. As much as we can have faith in any young players I think we have grounds to be optimistic about him and Bidwell.

I've heard nothing about Baines wanting to leave, and certainly we shouldn't be selling him. But if he does want to go, I don't think a CB is a priority. Distin can handle LB and Duffy is fine cover for Jags and Johnny. Whether Garbutt is ready is irrelevant. Duffy certainly is.

The wrong Olsson. We should look at Martin Olsson from Blackburn, especially now they're relegated. Natural left sided player with pace and good at working back (unlike Drenthe). He would also provide good cover for Baines but add an option at left mid!

I thought that DM made a promise to LOWER the age of our squad.
With MacFadden obviously considered better than Barkley or Maggy it appear that our so called young player of the year is just the best of a very poor bunch !!
If the Olsen rumour is true then I will be losing even more interest in our once great club.
DM mentions in his comments that he starts every season looking to WIN the title with the players he has.
If that is true then he is either a completely blind idiot or on something ??
Our squaqd has been weakened and not strengthened...we owned Pienaar and Arteta and both have gone....NOW the talk is of bringing Pienaar back when we only just let him go ??????
It's like the Benny Hill show and we must be the laughing stock of the division if we as supporters are even discussing this article positively.....Have none of you guys got any memory,s at all ??

We are crying out for decent class premiership quality players who will enhance our squad and there are a few who could be available BUT...dont just bring in stopgap ageing players...bring in a few who have some mileage left on the clock.
We need at least one real croud pleaser who can lift the fans..
Pienaar should never have been allowed to go and neither should Arteta without having an adequate replacement for his position.
We need to offload...Mcfadden, Mucha or Hahnemann, and Neville.
Plus serious moves must be made to phase out Hibbert, Distin, Cahill and Osman over the next season or two.

We are short of cover at the back unless Moyes is ready to start Duffy?
Distin is still a good player but more susceptable to errors as he ages.
Jags and Heitinga are lacking in inches and against the likes of Carroll that can be a problem.
Olsson would be a good buy at the right price.
