David Moyes is considering a move for Crewe's coveted midfielder Nick Powell this summer having joined a host of Premier League admirers to scout the 18-year-old at Gresty Road on Saturday.

The Everton manager, and Sir Alex Ferguson and his Manchester United assistant Mike Phelan, attended Crewe's 2-2 draw against Aldershot to watch the midfielder, whose 15 goals this season have helped the League Two club into the play-offs and attracted strong interest from Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Liverpool.
Powell is rated at £3m and Moyes hopes the teenager's desire to sign for a Premier League club that can offer an immediate first-team opportunity will enhance Everton's prospects of landing the latest talent to emerge from Crewe's youth system.

My problem with this is that next season if all players are fit our central midfield should be selected from Fellaini, Gibson, Rodwell and Barkley. At the moment Barkley is one of the most coveted youngsters in the country and he can't even get a start ahead of the Osmans, Nevilles and Cahills. So what is the point of spending 3 Million on another youngster with bags of potential who'll sit on the bench. A waste of money that could be put towards re-signing Pienaar or another striker.

Ryan #740, you've made the assumption that come transfer deadline we'll have avoided the last minute sudden transfer request from one of those players, and miraculously the deal with the buyer was all wrapped up in a couple of hours, just like all transfers...

Fair point Matt #741. I was going to throw in that that cynical side of me suspects that one of Rodwell, Fellaini or Barkley would be off if we signed this lad. I don't know, why do I always feel so negative come the transfer season?

Ryan the professional psychologists who troll this site would say you are cynical as you read too much Toffeeweb, however years of completely unscientific research has proved beyond all unreasonable doubt it's because you support Everton.

Its a question of whether you are good enough, Jeremy. The problem with Everton's current 18-, 19- and 20-year-olds is that there are better players than them currently playing for us in their positions. For Duffy, see Jagielka, Distin and Heitinga; for Bidwell and Garbutt, see Leighton Baines; for Conor McAleny see Nikica Jelavic.

Mark 904....DM did not get the most out of Rooney, he was rested and nursed when he was well worth his place...Why is Macfadden brought on before Barkley or Maguey....its no secret that DM will only use the young players when he is forced to because of injury or suspensions.
We have ageing players more or less guaranteed starts even following injury....we need a complete revamp and in some cases clear out of a lot of players who are basically overheads..eg; Hahnemann, MacFadden and at least one or two starters who are past their best eg; Cahill, Osman and Neville who should be bench warming and used as impact players or in away games...
Whatever happened to Baxter ??

Why should we be the only premier League team who plays their kids regularly? No one else does this. Over the years in every position Arsenal have had kids who are probably better than half of our first team yet Wenger only played them in the carling cup or if someone was injured. The two exceptions were Fabregas and Wilshere, exceptional talents (far above Barkley at his current level) and even Wilshere had to go out on loan. Even that Sterling kid can't get a game at Liverpool ahead of dross like Henderson.
It's too easy for every fan to think that kids in the reserves will be better than the current team. Man U despite having two pensioners in midfield din't play Ravel Morisson or Pogba, so its not just moyes with this supposed oversight on youth. he plays them when they're ready giving them time here and there to lower themselves in. Barkley had a terrible injury and it shows as amongst some of the good stuff he does when he comes on he also gives the ball away a lot. He's not ready, why woudl Moyes not play him if he was head and shoulders above all our other options? I'm sure the answer isn't 'because he's negative and likes his favourites'.
Also what's with the Neville bashing, yeah he's not Baines going forward but there's a reason spurs put in a bid for him. how many times is he done by a winger? We've seen him keep player slike Ronaldo quiet and Mata and Silva this season, and he's also been part of a defense that's got the fourth best record in the league.
