Pienaar price problem...

04/06/2012 | Comments (35)
According to The Sun and the Mail, Harry Redknapp has fallen out with Tottenham Hotspur owner David Levy over Steven Pienaar.

Redknapp has requested cash to bolster his midfield, but has failed to utilise the talents of Pienaar - something which Levy has taken issue with.

This disagreement threatens to disrupt the 30-year-old's move back to Everton, with Redknapp's valuation (£3M) being lower than Levy's (£6M).

Good old Harry. I always liked him.

£5M is a fair price for him if you actually think about it. They got him on the cheap as his contract was run down. That is not the case now so why should they sell him back on the cheap?

It's partly Pienaar's fault: he wanted the move and, now it hasn't worked out, he wants back in. He should force it through if he wants it that bad.

I personally don't think we will see him back next season sadly.

I said when the loan deal was done this was a win win situation for Spurs, and so it has turned out. Had he not performed for us then Spurs would have saved on his wages for 6 months, as it is he played very well during his loan spell. So Daniel Levy now wants the very best price he can get, and if Everton dont have the cash then I am sure there are other clubs who will pay what he is asking.

Plus there is also the possibility that they will hang on to him hoping he can produce the form he displayed playing for us.

Or, Brian, simply sit him down again, as taking him from us weakened our side quite a bit.

If true, I can understand Levy trying to getting as much as he can.

His (Levy's) only gamble re Pienaar (or for that matter any other club interested in him) is how much Pienaar wants to stay at Everton.

As annoying as it is for clubs and as much as every club/manager would love to stick their sour-faced/'unhapy' players in the reserves, unless you're City or Chelsea, it just isn't financially viable to have a player who is picking up 50.000 and upwards a week, who doesn't give a fuck.

Everton's best (only?) chance of getting Pienaar rests with Pienaar.

ie: That he he's 'not happy' at Spurs and turns down Sunderland or..whoever (have a feeling if City/Utd/Chelsea/Arsenal came in for him, we would be fucked off quicker than you can say 'God is great')

Anyway, so far Pienaar has (I'm delighted to say) fucked off Spurs supporters and done as much as he can to let the world know where his heart lies.

I'm sure Levy would whup anyone on our board at poker, but he'll also know keeping Pienaar because he can't get 6m could blow up in his face.

Whatever happens, I can't really see him staying at Spurs.

My guess is he'll go, but probably somewhere else.

Hope I'm wrong as I think he's a great link-up player and I have NEVER seen him pass a ball and just stand there.

Here we are, without Pienaar, and we have not offered a contract to Drenthe.
This leaves us fucked in my view.
Pienaar is our first choice winger, but if we can not get him then Drenthe must be our second option, we can not afford to start the season with no real wingers to supply Jelavic.

The semi-final against Liverpool told us that we are lost without one of these wingers.
Drenthe could be a risk, but we have no alternative, his assists and goals are vital.

If we can not get Pienaar then we will be forced to go after a replacement.
Coleman or Gueye is just not good enough.
Personally I would want both Pienaar and Drenthe, Pienaar on the left and Drenthe on the right.
Moyes has a tough job, he will resist getting Drenthe, but will he be desperate enough to give Drenthe a second chance?

I personally don't want to see loose cannons like Drenthe at the club no matter how good they are, they are a cancer.

Jimmy - do you go on about Drenthe deliberately to wind people up and/or get attention? Your unremitting loyalty to the guy is bordering on some kind of mental illness.

I dont normally have a go at TWebbers but please just finally put Drenthe to rest ffs. The guy was an idiot and its not worth wasting money (we dont have) on him. Even Heitinger pretty much said he was a basket case so just stop going on about him.

How old are you anyway - you sound like an 8 year old whos lost his favourite toy!

Oh Lordy... Jimmy's in his trance again... chanting Drenthe-Drenthe-Drenthe... trapped in Royston Rapture... prostrating himself in front of the graven image with the strange haircut... burning candles... strange music... painting 10's on the walls.

Jimmy needs an intervention, or an admission to a brain clinic for a Drenthectomy.

Jimmy... one more time... Drenthe... is... gone.

He's history... unwanted... undesired... dismissed... banished... kaput... verklempt.... outta here... never coming back.

Ah, forget it. There's no hope. You can kick heroin or crack, but you can't kick a Drenthe dependence.

Jimmy is right about wingers though. For a club who concentrates its attacking play down the flanks but not have any wingers is a massive weakness.Personnally I think we have seen the last of Pienaar in a blue shirt.

Signing Drenthe would be a disaster and he has messed Moyes about so I can say with all the certainty in the world that Drenthe will never play for us again. Good riddance the guy is a tosser of the highest order. Why would you bother signing Drenthe when you could have the likes of Barnetta or Hoilett for the wages he would cost? Drenthe really isn't that good anyway. Look at his stats again if your in any doubt. Piss poor.

A perfectly valid point about needing wide men. I always rated Drenthe and hoped he would come good for us. But come on Jimmy.......let it go. He was good, exciting but definitely no Limpar or Kanchelskis. Move on mate.

Levy only bought him to make money and it looks as though he's going to clean-up!

If we can't buy him and are forced into selling Baines and Fellaini, we will be back to the usual starting from scratch and another poor start to the season.

We had some ambition at the end of last season but the horizon is looking decidedly murky now!

He's 30 James.
How many players go for £5 million at 30 to a non-CL club. You get a 22-year and you could have him for a decade or re-sell at a profit. I want Pienaar, but we would neither have him for a decade nor re-sell for any price let aloe a profit.

I'd say a max of £1m for each year of a contract. And what would we offer? him Three years, four at a stretch. So I'd say £3 million, plus £1m add on if he signs an extension.

Edward Robinson,

Levy bought him to profiteer? How do you work that out? They had to pay £3m fee, and then £3m salary for the first year. If they sell for £6m, they only get their money back.
Edward Robinson

Roberto, Can we afford £3million?

We always seem to be "desperate" for money!

They only had him for half a year and Harry obviously didn't want him in the first instance!

Roberto, if player makes the difference between qualifying for the Champion?s League (which our form during Pienaar?s loan warranted) or failing to do so (which we were pre-Pienaar), then £5 million would be a bargain price, regardless of his age.

The real question is how much of our resurgence was due to him and how much can be attributed to the likes of Gibson, Jelavic & Donovan.

Aiden

Pienaar has been a part of the piss-poor starts we've had in the past. I think the upturn in results was a combination of Pienaar, the other signings, and the other players' confidence being lifted by these signings. I think the chances of us making the CL even with Pienaar are very slim, it would take at least 4 more quality signings before it is realistic.

I'm with Roberto on this one, Pienaar is quality but I would not pay more than £3m on him to only get a few years service and little possibility of selling on for money.

If I were Levy, I'd take £3mill from us and the difference out of old Candleface's wages. That would send a shot across the bows of managers who buy players on a whim without any plan for them.

I worry what's going to happen to Jimmy when the new season starts and Drenthe is nowhere to be seen. Is there anyone from round his neck of the woods that could possibly pop round his house mid August and take a peek through his letterbox to make sure there's not a huge pile of unopened mail with a pair of feet dangling in mid-air just above it?.
Aiden Doyle
243   Posted 04/06/2012 at 21:33:33

You may well be right Paul and, if you are, you've made a far more considered response than simply dismissing the idea because Pienaar's too old to be talking that kind of money.
Frank Knight
244   Posted 04/06/2012 at 22:12:41

Seems to me that in Jelavic there is a major corner turned. With a striker who can find space and finish, there will be plenty more room for creative midfielders and creativity costs money, but also makes money. This summer is important, a sub-£5M Pienaar is a no brainer, above and it's time to look elsewhere.

Holiett off to Germany? Now there's a player worth taking a chance on. Should Barkley be good and you are boasting Fellaini, Pienaar, Holiett and Barkley in mid, well all you need is a another front man and the CL dream is not too insane. However, investing on long term reward is not an Everton trait. The place has been run for years like a private equity firm, because it's for sale, don't leverage long term debt as it puts buyers off. The problem is, lack of investment degrades the offering; it's a big year indeed for EFC.

I think we can swing £6M no problem. We just need to agree an 88-year repayment plan supplemented by 200 thousand Everton mints and 500 grates of Chang!

Seriously guys, £5 or 6 mil for a 30-year-old? He's a very good player for us, no doubt but its probably better we just take him on a season long loan instead.

It's would be better investing that sort of money on a younger like Holliet who would provide long term gains.

Jimmy Sørheim your 'Bromance' with Drenthe is becoming a bit tedious now.

Regarding Pienaar - he quit Everton because BK and Dour Davey would not agree to give him the same wages as Arteta. If we now pay more than £3M for him ,say the £5 or £6 Mill that has been suggested then the stupidity of allowing him to go for such a pittance in the first place will be laid bare. All those saying he was sold cheap because his contract had run down should ask themselves who was responsible for allowing that to happen and of course it comes back to the same incompetents BK and Dour Davey. You can if you like blame Pienaar but if he had been offered a salary equivalence with Arteta I don't think we would be having this conversation now.

Anthony Hawkins
283   Posted 05/06/2012 at 10:18:21

Pienaar has made a massive difference to the team but literarily throwing £6m down the drain for a 30 year old is madness. We wouldn't get anything back on £3m let alone £6m. Pienaar is at his peak and it's only downhill from here. I rate Pienaar very highly but it was about the right time (may be a seasOn or two early) for him, and other players like him, to move on. Our current team is on the verge of being too old. Again.

Players entering their 30's should start to become bit part players and not be heavily relied upon - even Giggs plays a reduced amount.

286   Posted 05/06/2012 at 10:42:41

I think I'm of the same opinion as the other guys about the £6M for Pienaar, I think our best and shrewd bet would be get him on loan for another season; this way, his contract at Spurs will have ran down another year meaning this time next year he would only be worth £2 million of anybody's money.
James Stewart
288   Posted 05/06/2012 at 11:05:38

Roberto and others posting similar.

We signed Distin for over £5M in his thirties. Arsenal paid £10M for Arteta who was 29 at the time. Now 30.

It's not as if Pienaar is some speed demon striker. He will continue to do what he does now for a good few seasons.

Now I'm not saying we should go spending big money on ageing players but consider this, if Pienaar was our player at the moment with years left on his contract would you be happy to sell him for £3M? He is worth more and the fact of the matter is others will pay more so what makes us so special that Spurs should sell him to us cheap?

Steve Smith
290   Posted 05/06/2012 at 11:11:59

James 288.
The only ace up our sleeve regarding Pienaar is that he wants to come back to us, {or at least that is what he's implying} if that's the case then his market value becomes irrelevant, it's impossible for Spurs to sell him to another club if the player doesn't want to go there no matter how much is offered, I think our best bet is probably another long term loan deal, we won't pay £6M imo and if Pienaar digs his heels in, then it may be the only option for Spurs to free up his wages.

Levy and Kenwright are supposedly big mates, so you'd think he should be able to sort this one out with no fuss.........oh wait.

James Stewart
302   Posted 05/06/2012 at 13:40:05

I agree Steve the best move for Pienaar would be to dig his heels in if he wants to come back. I think that is a big if though. If another club comes in with a £6M bid and offers him £60/70k per week I don't think for a second he would turn it down. The point I was making initially is that Spurs have every right to ask more than £3M because they would get it on the open market.
Brian Waring
536   Posted 06/06/2012 at 16:55:11

Yeah, Pienaar says he wants to come back to us. I wonder though, if the likes of Sunderland come in for him, pay Spurs what they are asking, and offer Pienaar a lot more dosh in wages, would he still want to come?
Ian Bennett
975   Posted 03/07/2012 at 19:53:09

Pienaar has 12 months left on his contract, I think we can reverse the tables here. Come Christmas he is worth less than the £2.5M we received, that's for sure; Spurs ain't going to get £6M.
