Moyes to steal Rodriguez from under Saints' noses?

The Mirror claim that Everton are planning to snatch Jay Rodriguez from Burnley ahead of Southampton in a deal worth £6.5m.

The England U-21 striker was on the south coast at the end of the week discussing a £7m move to the newly-promoted Saints, but Alan Nixon suggests that David Moyes has told the striker to delay any decision while he gets the finances together to bring him to Goodison to partner Nikica Jelavic.

Quite where those finances are supposed to come from given that a) Everton barely have any unless they sell first and b) Steven Pienaar is believed to be the priority this summer is anyone's guess.

Assuming we have to sell, I would sell Fellaini for 15m plus lukaku from Chelsea. Fellaini will go at some point, this would give us a quality centre forward to go with jelavic and cash to spare to pay the banks who will be knocking at the door/buy pienaar.

Ian - I hear you being realisitic given how the Club is run. But I'm hoping their view of Fella basically being unstoppable as the season wore on as, "Christ, the lad's coming along and just 24!", rather then the same thought with "....just 24! We can really cash in on him".

Ian, yeah, me too. What's most unfortunate is the "Must sell to buy". That's how the team is run only because our money-bagged owners won't let loose 20-25 mil for Moyes to upgrade the team. We don't sell to buy because that's our sole option. We do so because our owners won't spend their own money. While not much spending is needed!

Now, myself, I have no problem that Green and whoever got in seeing an opportunity for a real estate development which could make them a thumping profit one way or another. Good for them. Except it failed. Then the 2nd attempt at a stadium which was an embarassment of poor business.

There's nothing left for our owners but investing in the Club to improve our league position. And it won't cost all that much to do so. Cost which they'll get back when we move up into contention.

It's there to be had by Kenright and them. I don't see any option other than they have to get up off a fraction of their own 100s of millions.

If Moyes has to dump Fella (especially) or Baines (Top 3 at his position anywhere) to do another re-build of a side on the brink, Moyes will go. How is this good for our ownership?

C'mon gents. You hold the purse-strings. EFC isn't a relegation-worrying team. We're the fellows standing along the chain-link fence, looking thru to all the happy CL EPL sides having fun. We're that close. Shit or get off the pot.

Totally agree James but as you have already stated this is Evertons board we are talking about. I don't even think it would cost us 20 million to guarantee European football. When you consider the coaching staff think Barkley will be ready this season we are looking at Peinnar and right winger. Hopefully they will finally offload Yobo leaving around ten million to find unless they do get Hoillet on a 'free' then the amount required drops further. Just a thought.

James, maybe that £20~25 million would be better spent on a new stand? That would increase the asset value on the books, provide additional capacity ,and more importantly executive boxes, and therefore improve the future income of the Club and make us more attractive to potential buyers.

Please.. and I mean please.. NO ! I live in Southampton, and I gave it the big one to my workmates when Jay was linked as their new record signing. ( Its Rory Delap at the moment by the way.. )
I said they needed a proven goalscorer, and I even suggested the Yak alongside Lambert and Billy Sharp.. I said wasting money on a Burnley one season wonder would be the death of them...

Eric (28) - No quarrel. But immediately, the money spent on building the team. After all, the 1st EPL Club challenges for the PL silverware without the big money will be hailed across Europe; every league.

Our boys are the only ones close to achieving that. And our owners DO have the money. Let's hope they let a few million go to Moyes to improve the team. 20-25 mil is chump change to our owners. And chump change needed for us to go into next season with a bang.

James we could spend 20 m and still not be anywhere near contesting the league.

If moyes spent incredibly well and we got very lucky with injuries then maybe we could have a long shot at champions league but look at the squads of city, utd and now Chelsea after this current spending spree. Different level.

At best we would be challenging spurs, arsenal and the RS for 4th. And all those teams will be spending 20m or more this summer too...

I like this guy better than Rhodes, Maynard or some of the other long shots. Seems more able to come from deep and is very mobile as well as tall and decent in the air.

With Jelavic up front he's going to play as second striker or not at all more likely, so perhaps 5mil would be better spent on Holtby or Sigurdarson who look more at home in deeper/wide positions.

Oh god, I've fallen for it haven't I.. It's silly season and we're potless!!

Yes Drew, it is the silly season and we are potless, we do not have any money. 20 to 25 million if only Kenwright would come across this one time - if only. We all know come 31st August at 6pm the rumours will kick off on Sky Sports news transfer deadline day programme, Fellaini or Baines will be sold and the money will vanish into chairman Kenwrights big black hole forever, never to re-appear. Moyes will be on a downer until the new year, when we loan Donovan and Pienaar back and pick up towards the end of the season.

C'mon lads ? where is count Stracqula, surely worth another season warming the bench with Anicheibe? I just watched some highlights of Drenthe and how he carved up Man City to create the Gibson goal. Great talent ? just that Moyes had no clue how to harness that talent. I still believe he would have torn the Shite apart in that semi-final.

We still have by nature a very negative manager, and the Shite have got Rodgers who will insist they play at better brand of football plus he will get the money to do it. Don't expect Moyes's record over the the big boys to improve as he will choke. Time he went if you ask me; I was hoping Villa would come in for him. Neville for the job.

Well Southampton have now confirmed the signing so it's all dead in the water as far as we are concerned.
