Moyes set to sign new 3-year deal

17/06/2012 | Comments (70)
In the Express, John Richardson reports that David Moyes is "poised to sign a new lucrative three-year contract" to stay at Goodison Park.

Moyes has been one of the bookies' favourites to take over from Harry Redknapp, who was sacked last week but it appears as though he is ready to commit his future to Everton, providing certain assurances are given by Bill Kenwright.

Providing there is no desire from within the boardroom to part with their big players unless the cash is immediately reinvested in new players then Moyes is prepared to extend his stay at the club. He can expect a big raise as Kenwright is aware that the bigger clubs are always likely to have his bright manager on any wish list of replacements.

As predicted. I am glad he's staying, but don't get the need to increase the salary of the 3rd highest paid manager (since Redknapp and Queen Kenny got the push) in the Prem.

Its a joke! For a manager who has failed to win a single trophy in 10 years at Everton, he shouldn't be in charge ? never mind getting a pay increase. Already we can see where this extra TV revenue is going to be wasted: increased salaries for managers and players. It's the wrong strategy to adopt.

Oh I forgot to add if this is true were does this leave Moyes statement about managers and players setting an example and taking a cut in pay to put something back into the game.

Absolutely no surprise here. No similar or better club has ever offered him a post, and certainly not at the salary he commands here. I wonder if he'll start the '20% cut' that he championed earlier this year with himself?

Don't hold your breath Nick! The last thing that Everton need to be doing is wasting this massive 70% increase in TV revenue on increasing salaries for players and managers. They need to first and foremost put this increase into 2 areas: investment in the infrastructure of the Club and reducing seat prices.

So Arsene Wenger shouldn't be in charge at Arsenal for not winning a trophy in 7 years? Kenny Dalglish should still be in charge at Liverpool for winning the (soon-to-be) Capital One Cup in his first full season?

Yes, it's frustrating Moyes hasn't won anything, particularly as we've reached 3 semi-finals in his tenure, we've only turned one of those into a final, and even then lost that one as well against a rejuvenated Chelsea side buoyed by the arrival of one of the great man-managers in the game in Guus Hiddink.

But to say it's a joke he's getting an extension is a joke. The man has turned around the club despite the mis-management at board level and kept us not only in the Premier League, but consistently in the top 7. He knows that's nothing to crow about but it does show the man has a skill in management and shouldn't be pooh-poohed for a lack of silverware. It just shows that he has managed to raise the fans expectations from perennial relegation battles to expecting to qualify for Europe and win a trophy. That alone deserves credit.

Whatever Moyes gets it should be doubled - for two reasons

1. He's taken a team who flirted with relegation for the best part of ten years before he arrived and not only made them competitive again on a shoestring budget in comparison to the top end of the Premier League - he has to sell his best players every other season... players who quite often have been overlooked by the big spenders who he rebuilds and moulds into top class players (Lescott, Arteta, Pienaar) and yet he still keeps us competitive.

2. It winds up the haters... and there's nothing more entertaining than watching them twist and turn, gnash and whine when he rubs their noses in it after another solid season with Everton at the top end of the table.

Now, the sane of us know Moyes has his faults, and we acknowledge them - you see - that's the difference between 'hero worship' and grudging admiration. But you won't find any of that in the rhetoric of the 'hater' - when Everton do badly... it's because of Moyes. When Everton do well - it's in spite of Moyes.

It's very entertaining - keep it up lads... but don't expect to be taken seriously by the vast majority of Evertonians.

10 more years

I hope Moyes stays, but with a massive pay rise? No. Firstly, because of his speech to the press about how everyone at his level of the game should take a pay cut, and secondly, he knows the one thing Everton are short of is cash, be it to spend on new players, keep hold of our better players, the stadium or anything else, so to take anymore of it for himself would be wrong. 75k a week for what is required of him at Everton, to keep us top 10, with no pressure to win anything. Then there is the talk of his ambition, or lack of according to some fans. Moyes claims he has it, but if he signed a new contract without assurances of future spends, or any indication that the club can move forward during this 3 year extension, then how can he keep up that claim? I know he hasn't been offered any other job yet, but if he felt so strongly, then surely he will do his best next year, then say 'sorry Bill, I have done my best, but enough is enough'. I hope that if he does sign, then it means he has been given those assurances, but I fear it could just be another 'great relationship with the chairman' excuse. He has said in the press that he told Bill he needed cash, and that's great, but again, no mention of what reply he got although I know in football that bargaining position is important in football, and any sniff of cash is jumped upon by both selling clubs and agents. It's a tough one.

Some dare to ask who will come when he leaves.

Truly this is the greatest job in world football, play the most basic football, hover around mid table and and you are secure for life, in addition you are paid as though a perennial CL qualifier.

It is an indictment of how thick some Evertonians are that this abuse of clubs finances goes uncontested.

Another thread entitled "why Moyes?" invites the unambitious to justify their devotion to this ordinary manager.

"Why NOT Moyes?" is the reality as yet another top job comes and goes and Spurs fans rail against the anti football a Moyes appointment would bring.

I ignore the excuse merchants now the withering effect of the Moyes tenure ie - unprepared for half a season, dismal record with centre forwards and youth, surrendering, predictable football and sulking like a tart cannot be justified by the fools paradise of "top 8, lah".

None of the above relates to money they are entirely Moyes effects, how much better would we be without them?

Yet still the streets are paved with ever increasing Everton gold for him.

Before this latest round of talks I read he was the 11th highest paid football manager IN THE WORLD.

Quite ludicrous.

Peter #529 ? Spot on fella, we are all moaning because we aren't winning trophies nowadays which is a good thing.

Of course we want success but there are 92 clubs in the league and only 3 major trophies so not everyone can win ? we are not alone.

Kevin ? top marks mate. You'll have the haters smashing their fingers down on their keyboards in response to that (Barry).

However, this article is probably as accurate as all the papers saying he's defo going to Spurs. No quotes, no truth. Nothing but lazy hacks selling papers to mugs ? talk about lining people's pockets.

People seem to relentlessly praise Martinez ? who only seems to win games at the tail end of the season ? as the best young manager in the country. But how does he compare to Moyes? But Martinez will spend as much time as possible speaking to any club that will listen.

Interested to hear one shred of evidence, that Moyes is motivated by his own salary...

Barry ? you need to update your cut-&-paste to take out the bit about centre-forwards. Think he's found one now. But that's just my opinion.

Kevin (531) I am getting increasingly pissed off by attempts such as yours to call people who are critical of Moyes as haters. It's a strategy designed to limit debate by polarising people. For the record I think Moyes is a good but limited manager. I don't hate they guy. There may be some people who hate him but I don't think they are the majority of his critics by any stretch of the imagination.

Dan I disagree with you about Moyes staying but I think you make some excellent points. Moyes is already payed a very high salary but I think you will wait in vain for him to use these negotiations for forcing the issue about investment in the team.

Peter 529 I'm not going to comment about other clubs and what they should do with their managers but I stand by my statement. Moyes has had 10 years in charge he hasn't won a cup competition, in my opinion that is a failure at a club such as Everton. I do not think he has it in him to win a trophy even with increased funding. I hope that I am wrong but all of the evidence to date suggests that I am not.
In the current financial situation that the club is in, giving a big pay rise to the manager sends the wrong message to the players and the fans.

The cold facts ladies and gentlemen is that Moyes will get the side somewhere between 6th and 8th. The mob can pretend as much as they like, but no manager is going to take everton much higher.

Barry - I agree with some of what is said, but not that part of his tenure. The previous 14 years excluding Joe's short purple patch was truly dismal.

John - I think you are right on the silverware point with us. We have never had the firepower to make us a good cup side. For that Moyes does need to take some rsp as he has tended to have an overweight defensive squad.

One thing I would want is that a first choice XI is played in every cup match. Playing the likes of much a has to stop.

I am pleased to see it looks like he is staying. I wouldn't've been devastated to see him go, but I would have been extremely nervous/uncomfortable to see the Kenwright administration handle the search and appoinment process of a potential new manager.

Surely Moyes does have some bargaining power now? Surely he can say, "If I have to sell and I don't want to, then I walk"? Moyes already knows and accepts there will not be a massive cash injection. But its about time our better players stopped leaving.

Our better players staying, a good start to the seson with a goalscorer now on the books, the return of Pienaar and hopefully one or two others, then top 4 is a distinct possibility.

Painting yourself as the rational voice while calling for your sides manager to get a pay rise just to piss off some other fans who disgree with you?

If only we were all so lucid eh?

My take on it is we will probably hover around 5-9th over the next decade unless we see a real amount of money from the TV deals, even though we have been skint right through this period of riches, and Moyes is given money to invest.

For any other club to do that a reasonable board would probably expect to lay out £75m over the course of that decade. With Moyes we will most likely do it without spending a carrot.

For that reason anything under £7.m and i'm not really arsed what he gets paid. I'd hazard a guess we won't win a trophy through that period but I've come to accept that while Kenwright is sailing the ship anything above running aground is a bonus.

John C - I'm not calling people critical of Moyes haters - I'm calling haters 'haters'.

Moyes should be criticised, he should be answerable to his decisions - but there's criticism and then there's monotonous and dire single idea fuckwittery that pretends to be criticism but is really just an expression of a lack of ideas in the author of the comment - beyond bland, boring, bog-standard boneheaded alliteration and the same old boring 'truisms' and made up 'facts'.

Basically, what I'm saying is I'm impressed with some people's critique of Moyes - it even makes me think about stuff and perhaps change my mind...

But the arseholes who just repeat the same boring rhetoric (and comment) time after time after time... well they used to wind me up - now they just amuse me - sorry lads, but you do - please keep it up.

BTW Keep the personal abuse coming Andy - it means I've won the argument.

Kevin that isn't the way that your original comments came over. I think both extremes i.e. Moyes can do no wrong and Moyes can do no right do not help the level of debate. As does labelling people apologists and haters.
Kevin Sparke
572   Posted 17/06/2012 at 11:51:02

Perhaps it's the way you read it John?

I haven't labelled people critical of Moyes 'Haters' - I said quite clearly in my original comment:

"Now, the sane of us know Moyes has his faults, and we acknowledge them - you see - that's the difference between 'hero worship' and grudging admiration. But you won't find any of that in the rhetoric of the 'hater' - when Everton do badly... it's because of Moyes. When Everton do well - it's in spite of Moyes."

It's all about levels - criticism is constructive; I've engaged in many an online debate over Moyes's failings as a manager and quite often I've been the one pulling him to bits... but you cannot engage in meaningful debate with people who have one line of argument only...

The: 'Moyes is shit - end of' boys (and girls) - or indeed, the 'Moyes is God - end of' boys (and girls).

And you have to admit - this site is absolutely heaving with the 'Moyes is shit- end of' people...

Anyway, all of this is futile on a fantastic Sunday Morning where the roast dinner is cooking and the alehouse has just opened - I had a nice little correct score double up with Greece and Czech republic coming up trumps and intend to invest some of it in the new black away top.

Have fun all - even Andy Codling - who cannot be as miserable as his on-site persona suggests

Come appraisal time in your work, would you not ask for pay raise? Would you not try and renegotiate your contract wen it was coming to an end?

It says more to me about the fuckwits on the board that are willing to pay him the obscene amounts of money he is getting paid.

Players are never, ever going to accept less, so his one candle is the midnight sky example means nothing, so good luck to him on getting another one over on the fuckwit who decides to pay him too much for what he is doing.

578   Posted 17/06/2012 at 11:26:05

Sorry Kevin but your argument falls a little flat when you try and compare Moyes to our previous managers. Yes Smith was awful but Kendall had no support whatsoever from Johnson and Royle went at the first run of poor results despite a trophy, keeping us up against the odds, our best finish in 8 years and up until a dreadful injury list was still considered dark horses for that seasons title. It's now taken as the norm that we start playing well only in the second half of a season yet Moyes has never come close to losing his job. Considering the salary he is already on at the club without actually winning anything, I personally think he is very lucky. As for a new contract then I think if he signs it, it suggests more about him and his own ambitions than the clubs. As pointed out above he cannot state a need for a chink of light at the end of the tunnel and the possibility of reviewing his position if gaurantees are not forthcoming if he is then happy to proceed with the status quo. He is not only letting himself down but also the players and the fans.

Everton boss David Moyes has said that everyone in the Premier League should take a 20% pay cut to make football more affordable for supporters and to balance the game's finances.

Moyes, who celebrates 10 years in charge at Goodison Park on March 15, has had little cash to spend in his time at the club and has found success on a threadbare budget. And the Scot has his own ideas on how to help the situation.

"Perhaps the suggestion would cause some mayhem," he told the Sunday Express. "People might say it'd be harder to attract players but we have to take responsibility for the long-term health of football."

The 48-year-old added: "Everyone in the Premier League [should] take a 20% pay cut to put football finances back on an even keel, and allow a significant reduction in ticket prices to make football more affordable for the ordinary fan.

"We should be filling all the grounds all the time. Clubs have to control their money properly and only pay what they can actually afford. People have to be held responsible when things go wrong.

"Every family in the country at the moment has to finance correctly. They can't overspend. Why is football different?

"Football's been around for 150 years and it has come a long way, but we have to make sure we don't take it away from its roots. We must not get too far away from people."

THANKS DAVIE !!

Real world money (like mine) does not come into it - there is no normal in footie anymore than there is in music, tv or any other proffessional sport - it's all down to how much income is received and what the opposition are paying.
It's all ridiculous money but so is what is spent by goverments - just accept it and enjoy the show or maybe work hard enough on your skills to join them - it's not a closed shop. If you are the best then you get paid the going rate.

I think Kevin has put together a well thought out argument in this string. It's identical to my own views on Moyes. Begrudging admiration is the most succinct explanation of my feelings that I have seen as Moyes does have many failings but I can't help admire how he still keeps us fighting near the business end of the league and cup competitions.

So despite Moyes' failings, right now there is no doubt in my mind that his positive attributes also make him the right man for the club.

This site does have a majority of the "Moyes is shit ? end of" brigade. I wish it attracted a slightly more balanced view, so well done Kevin for putting a different view into a well constructed argument.

Find someone you are confident is better than Moyes and who we would get, present the argument as to why that is the case, then we might have something interesting to read. For me he showed some well documented limits in that bloody semi, at many other times he does very well such as end of the season.

Until there is a better option stick with, support and trust Moyes.

There are some very eloquent writers on this sight but the real news or ideas rarely amounts to much of interest and you then seem reduced to the more entertaining point scoring off each other. Yet I read it all several times a day...

I tell you what has really pissed me off throughout this entire Tottenham Saga.

It's the grovelling kowtowing to the "Super Spurs"... The stomach-churning deference afforded to these jumped up little nobodies from North London.

This crew haven't won a title or even finished runners-up for half a century. The have been relegated more times than they have challenged for the league.

Yes, they have a decent set of businessmen behind them, but even now when under Kenwright many people feel we are going through one of the darkest periods in our history, they are not doing much better. Moyes has average 57 points throughout his tenure... Spurs have averaged about the same.

A visit to any of the Spurs websites last week would have told you the overwhelming majority of them wanted Moyes, Yet the prideless amongst us think, they only had to click their fingers, they claim the fans who so desperately wanted him were, "railing against his appointment"... You couldnt make it up.

Criticise Moyes by all means, but for ffs, before you sprain your wrists in your haste to doff the cap, go and count the number of titles we have won since the last time Spurs even got close to one.

Think about 95 when we outnumbered them inside the stadium by around three or four to one ? when we had more fans locked out than they could muster. There was only one massive club in Leeds that day, remember which one it was

And please, accept Spurs are currently a wealthier club than we are, but let's ditch this crap about moving to them being a step up, remember who they are, more to the point, remember who you are.

595   Posted 17/06/2012 at 14:22:02

He hasn't even been given the payrise yet, in fact he hasn't even signed a new deal, so there's little point complaining about it. Besides, like any other company, Moyes is only worth what his employers think he is. If he's valued at a certain salary by Kenwright and the board then that is his salary; he's only worth what someone is willing to pay and there's nothing anyone can do about that.

I doubt there's anyone on here who would like their salary to be not only known to everyone but also scrutinised as though they're not worth that money. Anyone else at a company for 10 years would probably get a pay rise with every new deal, why should Moyes be any different? Other managers would be on the same if they had the loyalty to stay or the club had the faith to keep them.

It shouldn't be viewed as a bad thing that we have a board who has kept faith with a manager and a manager who has remained loyal. He's rewarded them so now they might be rewarding him. Normal business practice. No-one batted an eye when Fellaini got his pay increase to £70,000 a week, a player who's barely completed a full season for us and is constantly hankering for a move away, yet Moyes, a loyal servant of 10 years who turned this club around is not worthy of a pay rise?

If we want to keep or top players and top manager then we need to be offering pay rises; if we want to ever be a top club again then the first thing we should be doing is offering a top manager's salary ? whether that's to Moyes or anyone else; if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

The market should dictate salary, not some incompetent chairman who is looking to his manager to compensate for his inability to raise capital and make the club financially competitive. Moyes should be paid the smallest amount possible to make him stay ? that's economics. Spurs do not want him and that fact should not affect his new offer.

"He's taken a team who flirted with relegation for the best part of ten years before he arrived."

If people want to have a reasoned debate on Moyes's tenure ? why start off with this ludicrous defence of the man?

He has a £50M wage bill, and as mentioned above ? £70k a week players. I believe he had all £24M of the Lescott money, and spunked £9M of that on a Russian who sat on the bench for 18 months.

We could easily go back another ten years and ask why he can't emulate Kendall when he arrived.

Football, wages and choosing players from anywhere on the planet means the game is unrecognisable from even ten years ago in the Premier League.

For the record ? I think Moyes has an easy ride from the board & the fans, avoid relegation and he is considered a success.

All complete with total control & £3M a year. Talk about lowering the bar ? how can we ever expect to improve?

Think the reaction to this potential news depends on whether you are a glass half full or a glass half empty sort of fan. David Moyes has brought us stability without any excitement but I think I can live without the excitement of Wimbledon1994 and Coventry 1998!

If he ever does leave I think we run the risk of getting someone worse (70%) who will further deteriorate the overall position of the club with a lesser chance (30%) of ending up with someone worse who will improve things further. A bit like putting next month's mortgage payment on the second favourite in a two horse race ? risky but exciting in the short term!

Are you suggesting Barry @601 you would prefer a Steve Bruce or a Martin O'Neill type of character whose CVs are littered with buggering off from clubs at the drop of a hat for a better offer or pissing off in a sulk and leaving clubs in shit on and off the field for some other 'ambitious' manager to mop up.

I'm surprised at you, you?re not an idiot so please don't make childish and infantile statements like that. You come across as someone much happier to stir up the pot rather than celebrate 3 points and a good win. I don?t think you really are ToffeeWeb's ?Mr One-upmanship" so please cut it out.

Oh get a grip John and don't be so patronising. Everyome knows half the joy of this site is people adopting ludicrous stances and then pretending to be smart by defending them and sniping at those in a different camp.

The reality is ? as everyone knows ? that Moyes is not the best, not the worst and about the level we can afford or hope for. We are a top 10 club abd may be top 4 or 6 now and then with some luck.

But sod that reasoning. Fucking haters/apologists ? all infantile tossers in my view!

For the record, I'd like Moyes gone, but whatever happens or doesn't regarding him moving to Spurs or signing a new 3-year deal, my main concern is what brand/type of football we play next season.

I saw us play two VERY different styles last season.

One was an entertaining, thoughtful, often exciting and skillful pass-and-move game.

The other was turgid percentage-football, devoid of intelligence or anything approaching entertainment.

The former was a lot more successful in terms of goals and results.

Consequently, imo, any return to the latter should result in Moyes being chased down Priory Rd by 30,000 angry stone-throwing blues.

I don't expect to win anything under Kenwright/Moyes but there is NO reason to go back to the dull shite we have been subjected to for far too long.

I also think it's essential that Fellaini, Pienaar and Jelavic are all Everton players when the season kicks off.

Thanks, Ged.

Not being patronising in the slightest, just honest in how I feel about a good contributor in general.

Personally, extremists on either side are fuckwits of the highest order ? glad we agree on that! :)

Paul Whittaker

What a nob of a post that is, did you not see Moyes leaving the door open for Spurs on the Gary Lineker show?

He only had to repeat the unequivical answer of Pardew when asked the same question 24 hours earlier: "No, I'm staying where I am".

Do they put you fellas in a trance or summat?

It really is a cult this Moyes devotion.

Kevin, I have nothing against Moyes personally... so much so that I get the impression that he is a very dignified and loyal person; however, the majority of football I've witnessed from the teams he has put out has been in the main defensive 'keep it tight' garbage. He is very handsomely paid and has not achieved any silverware in 10 years, even though he has spent a vast amount of money and in doing so broke Evertons transfer record many times.

To suggest we double his earnings simply to annoy people who aren't keen on him is nothing short of ludicrous and tells me what type of person you are, probably one of the "fans" trying to flog semi-final tickets to other blues for 500 quid.

@ Andy Codling, re: "Has not won any silverware... even though he has spent a vast amount of money."

You are forgetting that Moyes is spending these "vast amounts of money" in an era when several clubs have been purchased by billionaires, stadia sizes have been increasing and TV rights sold for increasingly higher preices year over year. All of this pushes wages and transfer fees sky high. Consequently, Moyes has had to spend increasing quantities of money just to stay competitive.

Take a look at the last available turnover to wage bill figures here:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/may/23/premier-league-accounts-profit-debt Basically they show that financially speaking our club is as big as Villa, Fulham, Sunderland and Newcastle and is financially outclassed by Man U, Man City, Arsenal etc.... Small wonder that we win fuck all.

In my opinion Moyes does have several faults but he is doing a tremendous job to keep us competitive in an era of uncapped spending from oligarchs, yanks and sheikhs. 10 more years? I say yes.

Now you're just being silly Andy - how the fuck can you deduce I'd rip off my own fans from a few internet posts - do you do seances in your front room and magic tricks (I wish you'd fucking disappear - if you do)

Shaun - I'd say that 7th is more solid than 13th (our average Premier League finishing position - mean average- before Moyes was appointed).

Actually, I'm willing to bet bananas to buttons that if you take our average first class finishing position from the turn of the century to the present day Moyes is above average...

I can't be arsed finding out the match is on- any stattos up for it?

Back to the original post... Kenwright is knackered without Moyes and both parties know it. Bill will be more than happy to give him an extra 20 grand if it keeps him in Goodison applause but, if Spurs don't make a move, what does it say about Davey??

Has any other "big" club come up with an offer in the last 10 years for his services?? I genuienly don't know if they have.

This club will never move on till Bill and his cronies leave the building and that ain't gonna happen till Moyes quits.

Kenwright needs to get real, to give Moyes a pay rise will bring this club into deeper trouble.
Kenwright has no idea how to run a club, he spends money he does not have and that is how we got into debt in the first place.
Now Kenwright is going to add to the yearly loss of 5 million by handing Moyes a pay rise, it just goes to show how bad this club is run!

How about holding back on wages???????
Has that ever crossed his mind, I think Moyes has done a good job, but he does not need a pay rise.
He already has more than enough, just keep his wages the same, Moyes will not care that much.
What Moyes does care about is his transfer budget, and that is where all our money should be going, one would think that was crystal clear to Kenwright?

At this point in time we need Moyes, he needs to add to the squad.
We need Pienaar and another winger on the right.
If Moyes goes then I fear just as John Crook does that Kenwright will screw things up by getting Mick M. or someone just like him.

Kenwright is a complete idiot, give him time and he will fuck up, up and until now the only smart thing he has done is listen to Walter Smith by getting Moyes.
Other then that I can not find anything Kenwright has done right!!!

This guy is a complete failure as a chairman.
Get the BU and Everton fans together and force this guy out, or we will forever suffer under him.

I will despair if Moyes is given a pay rise, the money should go into getting new players, not on Moyes himself.
There is only so much Moyes can do without money, we all saw the first half of last season.
Do we really need to up his wages?

I would hope and expect that if David Moyes signs a new three year contract he will have been given some assurances. Mainly that his best players won't be sold and perhaps that enough money will be scraped together to bring someone in.

If he feels he has a job to finish at Everton then without such assurance he's staying for the wrong reasons. On occasion early last season he looked like a man at the end of his tether. There should be no reason for that next time

652   Posted 17/06/2012 at 20:42:02

For Moyes to claim a pay rise after his previous crowing of the footballing community taking a cut would take the piss. In general a pay rise isn't really a good move by a potless club struggling to cut its cloth and shedding players just to service debt.

654   Posted 17/06/2012 at 20:33:18

Does anyone have any evidence that David Moyes has asked Everton Football Club for a payrise?

Anyway, it's so funny to see the "Moyes Out" brigade using any weird and wonderful reason to make him look bad. 3rd highest paid manager after 2 EPL managers were sacked, lol.

The Times had him the joint 7th highest paid manager of last season a while back. He's spent £1.4 m per season to bring us from perennial relegation candidates to a club challenging for Europe most seasons etc etc etc.

To be honest, there's no point defending him as there are a number of 'supporters' who will just never like the man

Ah well, I'd be delighted if he signed a new contract, nice pay rise included. ;-)

I'm glad Moyes is staying if this is true. I would be very nervous if he left because anybody we would appoint would be a HUGE gamble.

I mean look at the favourites for the job if he goes - Martinez, Round, Coyle etc - even Martinez is one of the favourites for the Spurs job, even though he has never a finished a team above the top half. I'm not saying he would do rubbish, I'm just saying it could go either way, just like Rodgers at Liverpool.

I just get the impression that this Spurs speculation would do us some good, because it seems Moyes is calling the shots. Maybe he can finally get some money to spend or threaten to leave.

The increased pay package I dont agree with though, he already gets enough as it is. It seems a desperate way of keeping him. Thats one big issue for me.

There is no alternative to Moyes at this time.
I can find no clear replacement for him.
We need to hold on to Moyes until there is a clear alternative to him.

Moyes is not among the best, far from it, but at the moment he is the best alternative.
I have thought about Rodgers or Bilic, but they have been hired.

I would not give Moyes a new contract until next year, no need to rush it.
Handing him a new contract with a year to go is panic based.
We need to wait and see where he takes us this season before handing him a new long term contract, or we could regret it.

If Moyes can not find new wingers this summer then I think he should leave.
He needs to act now to get us back into Europe or we will fall further behind..

Kevin Sparke #531. Excellent mate! Well said.
This man is the glue that has held Everton together for the last 10 years. Before anyone comes up with clever references to this glue affecting his style of football, if he leaves we will be relegated within 2 years. Simple.
Those who rate Moyes don't call him the Moysiah or any other nonsense, we simply give credit where credit is due to a flawed and yet vital component of this Club.

"if he leaves we will be relegated within 2 years. Simple." - I doubt that. It would take a seriously bad manager and a huge exodus to make us worse than the teams coming up from the Championship

Where does it say he's getting a pay rise? It mentions 'lucrative new contract' but isnt the one he's on now lucrative? So possibly it's just an extension on the same wage?
