Let's honour a modern-day hero

 Comments (40) jump to end

I would like to somehow start a campaign to have the number 17 shirt retired from Everton FC.

Tim Cahill was special. I could go on and give a million and one reasons behind this idea but I really don't feel it's necessary given the circumstances.

The man stuck around for years with the same hopes and dreams that we all carry, he played for us. He never walked onto that pitch for money or silverware. He did it for the shirt he had on his back. He understood what it was to be an Evertonian. He really did. And he leaves the club without a nothing but an FA Cup loser's medal.

I want Tim Cahill to leave his beloved Everton with his own shirt number. Never to be worn by anybody at the club again. It's nothing more than this living legend deserves.

I'm not sure we have to go to those lengths — we don't do retired shirt numbers in England, at least not yet; in any case, like the no. 9, I think shirt numbers are there to be passed down to worthy successors rather than enshrined.

I do like the idea, however, of the Club putting the no. 17 on all the corner flags at Goodison next season. I think that would be a fitting tribute, even if Tiger Tim won't be there to punch them... unless he comes back on loan in the winter, of course!

Tim has been a magnificent member of the Everton family. He has also helped raise our profile here in Australia. Truly a legend and deserving of a permanent reminder at Goodson. Perhaps also as a gesture, we could play Waltzing Matilda before the Man U game. Would be fitting as the last game I saw when on a visit was the famous 3-3 draw at Goodison with Timmy scoring in extra time!

It would be wonderful and deserving to see some kind of tribute at Goodison.
I now have a second team to follow and ive never felt the desire to do so before. Tim Cahill; Thank you for reminding us all what the game is all about and more importantly what it means to be a Blue.

It's a great shame that in his last appearance at Goodison he was sent off - I am convinced that the Newcastle bloke said something racist to him. It just goes to show that if you suffer that abuse and you are a high profile player then you get different treatment ( but that's another story). I think it would be fitting if Tim was invited to play some part in the Tony Hibbert Testimonial game - even just kicking off the match. It would give the fans an opportunity to show their appreciation.

No. 17 in the top corner of the corner flag sounds good to me, the guy's earned it.

I think it's going a bit far to retire the No.17 shirt, but I do like the idea of having the No. 17 put on the corner flags for a season. (wonders how many will get nicked and put on ebay??)
Would also like to say a big thank you to tim for the 8 years service he has given to the club and hope to see him back one day as a coach.

Never in favour of retiring shirts. Too many arguments about who and what warrants it, and you'd eventually have numbers in 3 figures if you take it to it's logical conclusion.

I know in the past it's been done when players have died tragically, and it's understandable, though I think it's mass-sentimentality society seems more prevalent to these days.

We have a Hall of Fame, and Legends awards, and if Duncan Ferguson gets in then if there's any justice Tim won't have to wait long.

Terrific servant to club AND country, and think of the millions he generated in revenue that our marketing team was able to capitalise on with his appeal down under...

Although I have said on here previously that it is time Everton moved the likes of Cahill on, but im still gutted now that they have. I hope it is a sign that Moyes is able to start to build a team for the next generation, rather than just get any high earners off the wage bill. We have lost a player who loved Everton, and I wish him all the best.

What a stupid post.

While we're at it then, let's retire 1 to 11 as well!!!

I don't believe in retiring numbers, for much the same reason as Lyndon. If we did, then we'd have to retire an awful lot of numbers given the players we've had at Goodison over the years.

I like the corner flag idea though, I do think we should do something to honour Tim's time at the club and that sounds like an excellent one. I'm gutted that Tim's leaving, this despite the fact that I wouldn't put him in our starting XI any more. He's represented everything good about Everton over the last eight years, from his spirit and work rate on the pitch, to his constant striving to get the very maximum out of himself despite perhaps being less talented than others around him, he epitomises the current Everton ethos. One bizarre exception aside, he also always seemed to get on with and have the respect of his opponents in a way that was noticeably different to the way players often treat each other.

Off the field as well he is an outstanding ambassador for the club. He always conducts himself with dignity, with obvious pride in being an Evertonian and a sense of perspective about football, avoiding the horrendous arrogance that comes with many professional footballers. I think we'll also seriously miss him as a presence around the club, as a senior professional within the squad, as a role model to younger players learning what it means to be a professional footballer and as an example to other players of how to train, how to be committed and how to be loyal to, and become a part of, a football club in an age of mercenaries.

I wish him all the best in New York, I hope he gets paid plenty, scores some goals and talks about Everton to anyone who will listen. I know he's always said he plans to end up back in Australia, but I would love it if he ended up back at Everton in some capacity, I think in particular he would be an excellent addition to the youth development system and would be a fine influence on particularly the mental development of our academy players. Either way, I'm grateful for his time at the club and wish him luck in the future, and I'm proud to call him one of ours.

I have only ever put a name and number on a shirt for one player and that is Tim Cahill. I doubt I will ever do it again so in that respect I am retiring the shirt anyway as I will only ever have CAHiLL 17 on an Everton shirt.

The corner flag idea is an excellent one. Relates directly to something we loved seeing Tim do and can even be transported to a new stadium one day! However, there is probably some rule made up by the Premier League preventing this!

I agree with Lyndon.

All the corner flags should have the number 17 on them.

Not just next season but forever.

I will really miss Tim Cahill. It's gonna be very strange without him.

Mick 569 - there had to be someone who spoiled it didn't there ? Ok you you disagree but how about being diplomatic eh ? Retiring the shirt is something I would disgree with - but the bloke has been a great player for us and that is something that should be appreciated. And as regards money well he gets paid for playing/taking part in his sport - that's something that he has in common with many others of all professional sports - including some taking part in the forthcoming amazing Olympic Games.

I would support anything to honour what Tim has done for our club, retire the shirt, 17 on corner flags, any of that. He has been amazing for us and I am heartbroken that he is leaving. It took me all of a couple of seconds to get over Arteta leaving but Cahill is different class.

What can one say that hasn't already been said. The bargain buy of the last 10 years, one that probably kept Moyes in his job all this time.

Sadly, Timmie wasn't to win anything in a Jekyll & Hyde team and all his efforts deserved something. Most of us knew a while back that he was past his best but were hoping he could still contribute some vital goals but at 32 this is a good move for him especially with Naismith coming.

I will hope to see him next time the ''Bulls'' play Toronto. Best of luck Tim.

Retiring shirts? Really?

I was and still am a big fan of Tim Cahill, but seriously, if the number 9 shirt hasn't been retired after the number of great players who've worn that, then there's not a chance for the number 17 shirt being retired.

To reiterate I'm a big fan and I have enjoyed 'every' appearance the guy has made in a blue shirt, but it is probably (sadly) the right time for both parties to go their separate ways. It's just a shame we didn't know the Newcastle game was going to be his last, else we'd have give him one hell of a send off......one similar to the one Big Dunc got after the West Brom game all those years ago.

Michael Tracey (569) - The irony of you suggesting that someone shows respect whilst you simultaneously show them none seems to be completely lost on you! I would suggest less caffeine in your diet...

Back to the thread itself: I don't agree with retiring the No. 17 shirt but he definitely deserves a lasting tribute. The flag idea seems a good one or maybe naming one of the executive lounges after him

"even if Tiger Tim won't be there to punch them... unless he comes back on loan in the winter, of course!"

Made me chuckle! But knowing Everton and Moyes it might just happen to save our season.

I absolutely love the guy; for me our best player over the past 10 years, and you can include Big Dunc in that.

Through no fault of his own he was unable to lift a trophy for us, but in my view there is no man more fitting. We should honour him in some way, and retiring the no 17 shirt, or sticking his number on the corner flags are fine by me. Everyone says he was on the wane, but for me he is beyond criticism.

The guy is one of us. Always treated us with honour and respect, and was proud to wear the Everton shirt. I got to speak to him last year in America; he stayed longer than all the other players to speak to the fans and nothing was too much trouble for him.

A true legend. Thanks for the memories, Tim.

Michael Brien @ 496, I think Cabaye abused one of the ball boys. The prick was wound up all day because he thought they were going to get CL football next season, so Tiger decided to put him straight. A legend in my eyes and I think we should retire about 8 or 9 shirts, because most of the time he was carrying those fuckers.

I'm an Aussie and I love what Tim Cahill brought to our club. But there's no way any shirt number should be retired. I'm hoping the next Australian (whenever that will be) to be good enough to play for us is given 17 and gives as much as Cahill did.

Having said that, having 17 on the corner flags would be terrific. Another touch of class that would make Everton stand out from the rest.

What a ridiculous suggestion. Is this how far we've fallen when people suggest retiring the shirt of a player who won absolutely nothing?

I'm not attacking Tim Cahill, I love the fella & I wish him nothing but the best but for God's sake let's just wind our necks in a bit. If you retire 17 then what about the achievements of the legends of 1970 or 1985? Ball? Labone? Reid? Sheedy? Cahill doesn't belong in the same sentence. (Sorry Timmy but what's right is right.)

How many putting 17 corner flags behind the opponent's goal. Hibbert may finally be guided to score.

He was such a great player that we had to fight off the likes of Arsenal Chelsea and Man Utd offering a big transfer fee and doubling his wages each season. No maybe it Real Madrid and Barcelona who came knocking.

I just watched the Cahill sending off and was particulary interested in Moyes and his reaction. Tim Cahill is a very limited player and time caught up with him a couple of seasons back. Yes he did well for us and scored some very good goals but we had to play 4-5-1 to accomodate him and his limitations. Time to move on.

I am a massive Evertonian in my twenties and in my time supporting the blues I have idolised many of our players. It was really at the start of David Moyes's tenure (I was at his first game vs Fulham) that my love for Everton became an obsession. I consider myself fortunate enough to catch the last few years of Big Dunc's Blues career but, for me, Tim Cahill has been 'Mr Everton' ever since he raised his white EFC shirt over his head at Eastlands in 2004 (and subsequently got sent off!).

I have been a Blazer Steward in the Park End for the last 7 years and only missed about 4-5 home games in that time. In hindsight, my inability to attend our last game of 2011-12 vs Newcastle has gutted me, as it would have been the last time I saw my modern-day Everton legend play (and subsequently get sent off!)... I do have a pretty good excuse though: I was trekking the Inca trail in Peru and raising over £35k for Everton in the Community (I was also in the Newcastle programme and can't get my hands on a copy!)

The main reason for my post is that I am determined that we honour 'my hero' Tim Cahill in some way this season. I want to advertise and give weight to the suggestion that the club puts small number 17s on the Goodison corner flags for the 2012-13 campaign. It would be a subtle but fitting tribute to my 'Mr Everton' and would honour a man that has put his body on the line each and every time he has pulled on that Blue, White, Amber... Pink, shirt over the last eight years.

I have to admit that I was one of the guys suggesting last year should be Cahill's last at Everton. I also have to admit that when I first saw confirmation of Tim's impending move to The Big Apple, I was very nearly moved to tears, absolutely gutted.

Let's get behind this 'Cahill Corner Flag' campaign (#cahillcornerflag for the Twatters) and get ask the club to honour a truly passionate Evertonian, and one of us.
