Returning home to visit the new stadium
I was born in Liverpool in 1940, supported Everton since about 1953, and emigrated to Canada in 1976. I've been back on numerous occasions, the last time was in 2023-24.
I have had no problem visiting the UK before but I am now being told that I now have to send for a permit to visit the UK as I was a previous resident holding a British Passport. The reason I obtained a Canadian Passport was I was always stopped at the US border who wanted to know why British Passport holders were entering the USA through Canada.
Now I am getting told that, to enter the UK as a previous citizen, I need a permit or passport to enter. I wonder if anyone else has had this problem or if they intend to return to visit family or friends or watch Everton at their new ground?

You can have dual nationality with a Canadian passport, Bill, why not just apply for a British passport?

Unless you have renounced your UK citizenship, to travel to the UK as a dual citizen, you will either have to renew your British passport, which you should be able to do online, or if you want to use your Canadian passport, you have to apply for a Certificate of Entitlement which sadly is considerably more expensive than a passport.
This is NOT the same as an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) which will not be issued to dual nationals. The following webpage provides information: https://www.gov.uk/dual-citizenship
We almost got caught out by this when I and my family visited last March (celebrating my 75th birthday) to watch our first game at Bramley-Moore Dock and saw them win vs Burnley!!
We became Canadians last year and were hoping to use our new passports for the first time on that trip. There was initial panic when we learned of the change, but fortunately all our UK passports were still valid. When we have renewed our UK passports online, it took less than a month.
Hope this helps and good luck navigating the system.

The last time was 2 years ago the week we played Nottm Forest, Liverpool and Brentford and at that time I used my Canadian passport with no problem and I have used it on previous occasions to come back.
The problem this year is they have changed the rules so that, as a previous British passport holder and citizen. I have to hold a British passport to enter the UK. I just have to renew mine.
I was trying to warn other people of the change so they do not get turned back at the passport control. Typical Government tactic to squeeze more money.

Oh, one more thing, I applied online to renew my UK passport and after 3 weeks was asked to post all my documents to Hemel Hempstead.

When you do it online be carefully which App you click on, some are 'unofficial' but very official-looking apps are out there.
Perfectly 'legit' if charging you 4 or 5 times the going rate is legit. Check it has gov.uk. When I did it in September 2025, it was £16.

But for your info only, don't tell anyone else, you can open a bank account in Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey if you are non-resident there, and non-resident of UK. Can do it online easily. I'd recommend IoM as you can visit there from Liverpool.
Good luck with probate, 3 years when my sister died, and she had a Will.

I hope this is a thing when I have to renew mine as overseas the Embassies have subcontracted it out to a shitty company. Can't even walk into a Brit Embassy these days, you need a fcukin appointment!
So this subcontractor makes you jump through hoops and attend an interrogation before finally sending off your application to UK with up to 10 weeks return.
Used to be the embassies issued them over the counter same day or next day.

Not always an indicator but probably more reliable in UK.
If you're ever applying for a visa or any government service in Viet Nam, if it says '.gov.vn' run a mile, it's fake.

UK passport application online, I was told by a young lady in the local post office that my first application would be rejected on the basis that the photos were unacceptable but if I replied back that they met all UK Passport criteria they would be accepted which they were. A young lady in an Aussie post office can tell me this but not the UK passport office.
Mr Burnham will have his work cut out especially if he wants to bring water, power, gas, public transport back under Government control with health and education as they should be.

We got caught out by this when our US grandson and his German mum tried to get on a flight to Bristol in Alicante and did not have their ETAs in order...
After the panic, it's relatively easy to obtain electronically on your phone, by downloading the UK ETA App and going through the required motions.
It's pretty simple... apparently. As long as you sort it in advance!!!
