Kingsley James – The boy looks good!

 Comments (22) jump to end

Surfing around aimlessly as you do on a wet Autumn evening with no worthwhile footy to watch, I was a bit surprised to see this new Everton player, Kingsley James, listed as one of the current senior squad:

Where's that come from, then? I could have sworn he played for Port Vale...

If you click on the picture, it's Francisco Junior... so I guess it's an issue with their website.

I was trawling the net last night and ended up watching the last 15 mins of Georgia's game in the WC qualifiers. Anyway the commentator was on about a particular player and was giving us a potted history of his career , started with FC Shalke and then went abroad to another club where he was 'Playing his Tride' for several months. I have never heard of a Tride before is it woodwind or stringed?

Here's something I did not know about 'Kingsley James'... aka Francisco Junior:
The Guinea-Bissau-born player began his career with Benfica in Portugal in 2008, and he was contracted to the club until 2013 as there was a clause in the contract that automatically converted Júnior's youth contract into a professional contract. Júnior was loaned to UD Leiria in 2011 but never showed up to play for Leiria, and it was found that the player had been training with Manchester City – unbeknownst to Benfica!

Benfica's president Luís Filipe Vieira told Manchester City to return the player to Benfica and sent the English club a plane ticket for Júnior's return. Vieira also threatened to report Manchester City to Fifa. In July 2011, Manchester-based media reported that Júnior was on trial with Manchester City, playing with their Development XI team in a friendly against Altrincham.

Guinea-Bissauan sports agent Catió Balde and Anglo-Iranian lawyer Kia Joorabchian intervened and Manchester City were forced to release the player. Manchester City compensated Benfica to the tune of €1.5million.

The thought had crossed my mind that there was something odd about how we picked him up, considering he was with City. Maybe snapping him up under these bizarre circumstances will go down as another Moyes coup... I just wish he'd give the lad a run out.

Or alternatively he looks as crap as Gosling.

Moyes crap or Moyes coup? The verdict is out but not too promising just yet. Fingers crossed...

Trevor it was an English commentator , I can barely speak English let alone Russian.
I think he meant to say plying his trade!

Moyes did give him a run out at Leeds, Michael. He didn't really impress, although it's early days yet.

You're right, Karl, my bad. I thought I'd checked but there were some errors in our file on the lad (shock, horror!) — now fixed. It's a pity as I fear his association with that disaster will put his development back 12 to 18 months in Moyes's eyes. But what the hell? He's ours for the next four years!

So if Kingsley James is Francisco Junior, who is the real Kingsley James.

You could be right, Michael, but I could have picked a more favourable time and place to give the lad a run out than against Michael Brown and a physical Leeds side in an away cup tie on a foul night. Not an easy baptism for anyone really was it?

Not only that John, but to be fair to the lads on that cold night in Leeds, it would (in hindsight of course) have been a much better idea to integrate just a couple of youngsters (instead of half the team) with an on form, nine other players so that, for his first game ever for the senior squad, he wasn't the main man in the middle of midfield.

If Benfica and Man City both took a close look at him, there must be something of value, I believe. Hopefully we lead 3-0 by half-time against QPR so Moyes can give him a run under more favourable circumstances. If he is as good as his reputation, we can certainly use him to strengthen our defense which I believe is our weakness this season so far.

Look the lad was given a chance against Leeds, and he was very poor so don't blame Moyes . As for suggestions that he could have picked an easier opposition I would have thought playing a team from a lower division was the right choice. Now some are saying oh it was wet and cold well that is normal for England at this time of year.

Good players play in all conditions so until he proves through playing for the reserves he can cut it lets leave him there.

Brian to be fair to him he was stranded in midfield with little support, watch the first goal and how after he loses the ball Fellaini moves away from the Leeds player that won it leaving the barn door wide open for a shot. The Leeds game wasn't a great game to choose to blood him but thats down to Moyes

No one played well in the Leeds game, Junior had Gueye on one side of him and Fellaini floundering on the other, what was he supposed to do? I thought he was actually trying to do the right things, getting on the ball and looking for a pass... but no-one was interested in moving into space to receive one and the Leeds players weren't particularly interested in letting anyone dwell on the ball for any time whatsoever.

If he was slotted in between Pienaar and Gibson with Jelavic showing for it at Goodison, then I think he'd look a lot better. He played well in pre-season so let's not judge him too early.

I love it how people judge someone after 45 mins of football. Truely bizarre.

Could somebody explain to me when would be a better time to give somebody a first start than in a game against lower league opposition in a Cup which is - rightly or wrongly - at the bottom of the Club's priorities?

Perhaps he would have had a stormer had he started against Lampard, Oscar and Mikel at Stamford Bridge or been asked to do a job on Gerrard next week but competing with Michael Brown? In the cold? Bless him he had no chance.

Seriously, there is no reason to panic just because he didn't have a great 45 minutes but he didn't exactly do himself any favours.

Jimmy, perhaps the second half in the previous round? Who said he should have been put in against Chelsea or the shite? I think Moyes chose the wrong game to pitch him in on this occasion. I just think he was up against it in that particular situation and as I said an easier introduction for his debut would have helped his confidence. Pity the rest of the team were shite on the night as well

John, when did I say somebody had mentioned those teams? I merely used them as an example as they will make up 10% of our games this year. The point was more that saying playing him against Michael Brown in the cold and wet was unfair doesn't really hold up when he could be playing against the players mentioned, or Scholes, Toure, Arteta, Cabaye etc on a similar night if he made his debut in another game.

Yes, the 2nd half against Orient would have been better but short of inventing a time machine that was no longer possible and I wouldn't advocate not playing him all year just because we'd missed the best chance to give him a run out in September. I think I remember him being injured at that point anyway, although I may be wrong.

Junior didn't have a bad game against Leeds. He showed some nice passing and didn't do anything wrong. I thought it was a bit harsh to haul him off at half time. Naismith messed up for the goal and Fellaini was woeful, making Junior's game harder. Fellaini improve once pushed higher up the pitch. I think if Junior would have benefited having Neville talking him through the first half. On the flip side, he's in competition with Osman who is having a quiet but effective start to the season. I'm not calling for him to start ahead of Osman, but defo not writing him off after the Leeds game.
