At Half-Time... We'd be Top!

 Comments (20) jump to end

An interesting stat from today's Times is that if all Premier League games ended at half-time this season, Everton would be top! So what is happening to us in the second half?

Now it may well be that other teams pick up after half-time but it must also mean that our performances drop off. If you compare us to Man Utd who are top after 90 minutes, their half-time home record is identical to ours. We have both been ahead in 3 games, drawing in 2 and losing in 1. Of the 3 we were winning we have won 1 and drawn 2 whereas Man Utd have won all 3 and of the 2 we were level in we have won 1 and drawn 1 whereas Man Utd have won both.

The interesting thing is the game we were losing we ended up winning but Utd lost theirs.

The possible reasons I can see for our weaker second half displays could be:

1) We are not fit enough.

2) Moyes's tactics are wrong in that he is naturally defensive-minded unless of course we are losing when he has to try and attack.

3) Other managers realise that attacking our weak defence is the best way for them to get something out of the game.

Whatever the reason, we cannot continue with games like last Saturday when we were hanging on for a 1-0 win against a team like Norwich.

I, along with 30,000 Evertonians on Saturday, could see that a change was needed to be made around the 60-65 minute mark. Norwich were pegging us in our half and the likes of Hitzlsperger and one or two others were tiring. Moyes definitely made a mistake not bringing on someone fresh then and at least alleviating some of the pressure on the defence.

The worry is conceding late late goals, that's now 6 points dropped. We need another keeper of real quality to challenge Howard as the mistakes he is making appear to be far more frequent. Let Mucha leave on a free. I'd also let Johnny H go in the Jan window, a waste of space, just how many times has he lost his marker from set pieces? Get some money in for him whilst we can.

We cannot kill a game off and thus invite pressure which we seemingly cannot handle given the fact that our defence currently resembles a sieve and we have a goalkeeper unable to command his penalty area. The amount of goals that we have conceded via set-play is also alarming, Howard is evidently in easy-street with absolutely no competition from the dud who warms the bench in Mucha.

Nothing hurts more than conceding late goals, something we have got into the habit of doing. Cut that out and the points will return.

It will also help when Fellaini, Mirallas and Gibson return!

Team Pts
1 Man City 38
2 Man United 36
3 Chelsea 31
4 Tottenham 31
5 Arsenal 29

This was the top 5 after we had been beaten at the Emirates by that Van Persie goal last season.

When you consider that we had a paltry 17 points from 14 fixtures and therefore we were 14 points behind the Champions League places, it maybe that we have been a little harsh on the Blues so far this season.

I have already stated that we are only 4 points better off than last year , but in the context of this seasons games that is only 9 points off the leaders.

So if we can pull out a performance on Wednesday and more importantly garner 3 points , we may still be on to a winner.

But one thing is for certain there are going to be no easy games this season as the tightly packed league table reflects.

Possible reasons for weaker second halves:

1, We are not Man Utd.

Another possible reason for weaker second half:

2, Opposing managers wind their teams up more effectively

Another possible reason:

3, We are running less on graft and more on flair than previous incarnations of a Moysian team. Thus less effort in the defensive third at pivotal times?

Possibly an extension of Nick Entwistle's but my other reason would be:

1) We aren't used to winning and closing out matches and are therefore prone to choke under the pressure of expectation; especially when holding just a one goal lead.

If Moyes is going to hang round waiting for fergie to croak he should pick the team on friday and have saturday off - sort the garden or something.

Big Dunc with a bit of fire in his belly should look after matchdays.

It's plagued Moyes era this business of players playing when the wind blows in the right direction.

Panic! Panic! Panic! Under Moyes to give 3 reasons.

The team has no leader which they get from our leaderless manager. How can we expect to close out games when we are lead by a tactically inept and scared shitless manager who should, ought to have known what was coming???

Too many times now in vital games Moyes hits the panic putton and reverts to type,

Mr Moyes, stop believing the hype: you are not as good a manager as you think.

After not making any changes in the 2nd half that we could all see needed making, it makes you wonder after nearly 11 years in the job, where on earth as as club are we going?!? £65k a week, you can dress it up how you want, but the 2nd half was textbook Moyes. Negative, predictable dross.

I don't care who was missing, it's his squad, his players and no one else in Premier League history has or will ever have the luxury of such a lucrative contract with no expectations whatsoever, and to be in the job as long as you want.

I am an Everton Fan of 36 years, I want to see us try to win every game not by hanging on all the time. Brian Clough (amongst others) said "Attack is the best form of defence". He was a winner, David Moyes is not.

That's my opinion, guys.

When if ever will it be a good time to give a youngster a run out? Must it always be when the team is backs to the wall when the slightest error could be crucial?

If not one of our home grown kids was not good enough or at least equal to at least half of the Norwich or Reading teams, it is time for a massive clear out of our coaching and scouting staff.
Phil Brown

The reason he didn't make any changes is that he'd convinced himself before the game that who he had on the bench was not good enough, à la flick knives versus machine guns. He is so negative in his thinking!

What must Ross Barkley think about his chances under Moyes having watched that? Him, Duffy and Vellios need to spend the rest of the season out on loan in order to develop properly.

Perhaps, by Saturday it will be less Flick Knives v Machine Guns and more Pea-Shooters versus Inter Ballistic Missiles.

I don't see where we are 4 points better off than last season if yout ake Southampton for Wolves (H), Blackburn for Reading (A) for relegated teams teams. Our record last season against the same teams played:

Home W 3 D 1 L 2 Pts 10
Away W 4 D 3 L 0 points 15 Total 25 points

This season: 21 points — but should be 31 points if based on play.

Well, all I can say is they had better play for 90 minutes in the next two... otherwise we will fall down the table.

Moyes has to get something going with this team as they are only playing for half the match these days and, when the signs of weakness appear, he does not act. That's when opponents wake up to the fact and realise they can get something out of the game and have been doing so.

Arsenal and Man City will certainly test the mettle.

Kunal -

30,001. There was one guy there in spirit, er me.... who was screaming at his computer watching the feed for Moyes to put literally anyone in to change the flow and momentum of the game.

Wait for it...

Silence.

Hear the crickets?

Nothing.

What Phil Brown said! Imagine being Barkley or Duffy. WTF do they have to do to get in a game?

The game was crying for a substitution Put em in and let them run around like wild boars just to change the flow of the game!

Or sit back and watch the inevitable train wreck occur, which it did.

Peter, I didn't intend to mislead anybody, the league table I exhibited and our results up an including our 14th match (Arsenal away) shows that we had 17 points this time last year. We have 21 at the moment.

I was also attempting to view how the rest of the league was performing at the same juncture last year. Like for like results for all teams would take a long time.

I was trying to redress the balance as I had criticised the team for its performance so far. By your reckoning we are down on last season.

I hope that clarifies things for you.

How the season started, I was well up for us beating any team, then we start playing the lower teams in the league and we start dropping points left right and center.

Lets hope we can get a few points out of the December as the games come thick and fast.

I am also hoping this January is as good as last, clear out some dead wood and play the young guns a bit more, Especially Duffy & Barkley, they must be seething and wonder what the chuffing hell they have to do, to get in the team.

Players needed,
GK, RB, S, CM, CD x 2

Players To Get Rid
Mucha, Coleman, Vic, Neville, Distin, Hetinga

Player To Promote
Barkley, Duffy, Vellios

So we now only need to find
GK, RB, CD
