Jelavić's woes

 Comments (19) jump to end

The form of Nikica Jelavić around a year ago led to many labelling him the 'best buy of January 2012'. At the moment, attitudes towards the Croat could not be more different. His last goal in Everton colours came in early January, and even that was against lower league side Cheltenham Town. However, this hasn't always been the case, as he did pick up an impressive 4 goals in his first 6 Premier League games of the season.

Despite the size of the squad, David Moyes has recently done what any sensible manager would do in this situation, and has dropped Jelavić from the starting 11. His start in the defeat against Norwich last week was his first in the league since the 0 - 0 draw at Southampton on 21st January. Sadly, it appears that this move has not had the desired effect, resulting in the continuing frustration of the manager and fans. Moyes, however, reiterated Jelavić’s importance at Everton claiming that "the team need him". The Scot went on to say that he "would like him to get his goals and lift his performances".

In-game lately, Jelavić has had a tendency to drift into wing-like positions when essentially he is needed in the middle. His 90 minutes against Reading produced another lacklustre performance. It has reached the stage where he is a liability with the ball, although you can’t deny the fact that he has a great work ethic.

So, where from here? Should Jelavić be placed on the bench until Moyes sees a drastic improvement? Victor Anichebe certainly hasn't disappointed when he's had the chance to play this season. The Nigerian has one less goal (5) in the league, yet Jelavić has around 20 hours more of game time. Maybe selling the Croatian international at the end of the season, and bringing in a replacement (increased with the funds that are available due to the failed Fer transfer) could be an option. Either way, we need a striker performing at his best to achieve any sort of European football. I hope that Jelavić can rediscover his previous form so that we can concentrate any future signings on other areas which need reinforcing. Whatever his fate, it is crucial that Jelavić tries to improve because at the moment he is merely a shadow of his former self.

A Jelavic in form would have notched three goals yesterday, and my heart bleeds for him. He really is trying his best and just needs a break. But at the moment he is completely sapped of confidence. His one touch finishes are suddenly two touch, with the first being clumsy and making the second impossible.

Osmans little chip in front of goal yesterday left him with a quite easy finish with one clinical shot, and one which he would have pissed in a few months ago, but he decides to use two touches and a great chance for him to get back in form disappears.

But it is it so important who scores, when we win 3-1? To be honest I think he had a good game, especially his defensive work (he has an uncanny ability to be in the right place to get dangerous balls away) must not go unnoticed.

I say keep him in the team, we are better for it!

He saved us a goal against us, yet he is not a defender. Jelavic currently is playing in all other positions then as a striker because he fears he will miss yet again. Maybe Duncan Ferguson can instill some confidence back into him.

My biggest problem with Jelavic is that he is nowhere to be found in the 16-yard box Moyes and his teammates need to remind him that he has to stay up front in order to get a goal again.

You can see the fear in Jelavic's eyes, he is avoiding what makes him uncomfortable. That can NOT be accepted, Moyes needs to have a straight forward talk to him, tell Jelly to stay in his fucking position.

How long will Jelavic be allowed to shry away from his striker position? That to me is the most central problem with Jelavic right now, besides his missing every shot he takes. I would play him if he learns to get back into his striker position, but if he can not do that simple a task then he needs to be dropped, because then he screws up our formation and Fellaini is our "only" striker left and he is an attacking midfielder.

I can not understand why none of the coaches are not chasing Jelavic back into position, and since they fail to do that then sadly Jelavic needs to be benched for the good of the team.

We can not afford to play with no strikers, we need a striker waiting in the box to score us some goals, Jelavic isn't doing the job.

Totally agree with every word you say Tony, I would start with him next week over Anichebe, one goal will sort him out, I thought after the second yesterday certain players looked like a weight had been lifted and we looked more like the team at the start of the season.

There could be no better game for him to find that goal than next week and I can see it coming.

I have the bizarre notion that as his sitters are getting worse it means he's getting closer to a goal.

Its difficult to say Anichebe should play in his place because a poor Anichebe is infinitely worse than a poor Jelavic. Vic has shown the kind of performance we have long hoped for this season, his next step is to find consistency.

As for Wigan on the weekend? Jelavic. I still think his team play is a lot better than people give him credit for.

And stop this wing nonsense. He picks it up there two or three times a game. So what. He did a last ditch challenge in our box yesterday. Central defender?

It would be interesting to see if any Rangers fans could throw light on the Jelavic Conundrum, did he go through dry patches there? There were also stories going about that Everton were willing to let him go last summer, but that seems unlikely. Maybe he thought joining us last January would be a stepping stone to a 'bigger' club and his form last year allied to a good Euro 2012 would see that bear fruit.

Whatever the problem is nobody seems to be able to find a solution. As he is our only true striker, we have little choice but to persevere with him until the end of the season and hope that he finds his form. Cahill and Saha went through similar dips but Jelavic's seems to be longer and deeper than both of those.

I played football till I was 30. My youngest boy (14) plays for 2 teams. The one thing that I know is that sitting on the bench does not improve your confidence. The guy has to play and he will score goals. For me he is a good player and you do not become a bad player overnight, you just lose form and confidence. He will come through this. Lets hope it is against Wigan next week.

In response to a previous thread on Jelavic, I have just gone through our last 4 games on the OS website. The one thing you cannot fault is this guys work ethic. He is still getting into the right positions and making good runs. I believe he will come good.

Another thing you have to take into consideration is the whole Fellaini aspect of our game, this time last year, our crosses were being directed towards Jelavic knowing he's a great finisher and he'll put them away. Now all of our crosses our aimed at Fellaini and to be fair it has been justified with his goal return, but is it worth it to see Jelavic in such a bad run of form people are talking about him leaving due to him not being good enough.

I say for the Wigan game drop Fellaini back into midfield and let Naismith play upfront with Jelavic, I understand that it could be the most unpopular thing I could have said but we need Jelavic back to the way he was at Rangers, surely it's worth a try against a Wigan team that's just been beaten pretty easily by Liverpool, and let Naismith do all the leg work for Jelavic.

Phil Davies, I appreciate where you are coming from with the Naismith, Jelavic link, as they did have a good working relationship at Rangers. Whether Moyes goes for that is another thing? The effort the Croat is putting in to get a goal is all there to see, & maybe it needs a miss hit, or a ricochet of his backside might break the duck.

And no better time than next Saturdays FA Cup Quarter-final.

I wouldn't drop him, I think we look better when he plays. Our team play yesterday was better than it has been for ages, I like Mirallas on the left and Pienaar on the right with Baines and Coleman, add Fellaini and Osman into the mix and we look more creative going forward.

I think Jela has suffered as we have as a team, if yesterday's second half is anything to go by then we could be seeing a swing in confidence, hopefully this will rub off on Jela and he'll discover his form in front of goal again.

I think it's when not if.

Should have put him on penalties at the start of the season.

The pressure comes from not scoring, penalties tide you over.

A child could see this early long ball out of defence (some dub as hoofball) should have been eradicated from our play, why Moyes can't I do not know.

Jelavic is not an athlete and cannot be involved in phase 1 and then get on the end of things, besides we have no speed merchant to feed off the flicks.

We need to build the play or get it out to the wingers - the next time Jags does it he should be shot.

One big tactical difference from last year was when he joined us, Pienaar was slotting balls centrally all the time, not always behind the main striker but putting though balls in the danger zone. Similar to the one Mirallas scored from at the weekend.

I said before the Reading game, that if Pienaar plays more in that role than we may see more goals, depending on the position of Mirallas, Jelavic, whoever is in the box.

Our play is often from over-lapping full backs, Baines and Coleman, but one of our best weapons is Pienaar's ability to guide those sort of balls through. We haven't seen that at all this season, and the 3rd goal on Saturday and Pienaar's free role/performance gave me hope that we may see more of it, especially in the games against Spurs, Arsenal away.

Jelavic is clearly trying very hard and his defensive work often goes unnoticed at times. I say stick with him, if he does go wide a couple of times then maybe that's because he's not getting enough support up front.

I'm sure he'll score some more before the end of the season but it really is a mix of a lack of confidence and a lack of though balls which have been quite rare this time round.

I think he has been given long enough to turn his form around, strikers live and die by goals scored and unfortunately Jelavic is dying on his feet. Time for Anichebe to be given a run till the end of the season and Jelavic put on the bench.

I think at last that Anichebe is starting to show why David Moyes kept faith in him. He was only on for a short time against Reading and but for some good defending by Ian Harte would have scored, also he is learning to hold the ball better something sadly that Jelavic doesn't do. I would love Jelavic to regain last seasons form but I think Moyes has to make the tough decision and start with Anichebe against Wigan.

I'm quite sure Anichebe will start the next game. To be fair, I don't think DM could have done much more than he already has to get Jelavic going again – albeit his public statement showed the psychological acumen of a badger.

People say we're not playing to Jelavic's strengths, but in the first half against Oldham, with Fellaini not playing, we did – and it still didn't work. He is painfully out of touch. The only remedy is to leave him out of the starting XI for as long as it takes for him to forget that he has a problem scoring, and god knows how long that will be!

I suppose there's always hypnotism...

The last two games are the first time for about 2 months where we have had 2 players, full of spark and energy, getting down the flanks and putting in dangerous crosses. Jelly is the type of player who will score with balls coming across the box, not lumped long for him to chase.

Service is everything and last season, and the start of this, he was getting excellent service. The return of Coleman and Mirallas, and a seemingly re-energized Pienaar should help in this regard.

I would start with him and Vic and give Ossie a rest, pushing Mo Fro into Centre Mid for a few games. If Pieanuts and Mirallas continue to combine and Coleman keeps getting into dangerous positions he will start banging them in.

I would drop Fellaini back into midfield and play Jelavic up top with Mirallas playing behind him. If it's not working, push Fellaini back up top and Mirallas out wide. Not Naismith because that would mean you would have to drop someone and I can't think of anyone to drop from the team that played Reading who Naismith is better than?

Last year we had Tim Cahill to help the guy up front, we do not have such player this year... Everton is playing different football without Timmy.

But I still believe in Jelavic, I liked the guy even before he started the goal run last season, I very quickly saw here was something special about him.

But also last season he was unknown, now our opponents close him down with two or three guys earlier. But I am sure he will grow into EPL next season and start bagging them again.

What makes you think anyone would buy him. Be honest the form he's in there's not a manager in Europe who would take a chance on him. As David Coleman once famously said. Goals pay the rent. Well I'm afraid the Croatian is well in arrears with his

Just stick with him, it'll happen, his movement to get into scoring positions is still there, even when crosses or through balls are blocked he's on the move to the right place. It's just going to click one game with a hat-trick and he'll be off again. Keep the faith, he's still a better finisher than many in a blue shirt in recent years.
